Declining form and tough fixtures hampering Bamford’s GW31 Wildcard appeal

Leeds 2-1 Sheff Utd

  • Goals: Jack Harrison (£5.4m) | Ben Osborn (£4.7m)
  • Own goals: Phil Jagielka (£3.9m)
  • Assists: Raphinha (£5.7m), Harrison | Oli McBurnie (£5.6m)
  • Bonus points: Harrison x3, Osborn x3, Raphinha x1, Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m)

BAM DUNK

Calls for mass sales of Patrick Bamford (£6.7m) intensified on Saturday afternoon as he recorded a blank against Sheffield United.

Recording his sixth blank from a possible eight matches since Gameweek 24 is perhaps cause enough to look elsewhere but the fact it occurred in arguably the most favourable match of the season will not have helped matters.

Bamford’s Fantasy Premier League credentials had been slowly winding down in recent weeks anyway, with Gameweek 30’s blank the icing on the cake.

Between Gameweeks 1 and 23 this season, Bamford accrued a total of 130 points in 22 matches, working out at 5.9 points per game.

In the eight matches since Gameweek 24, he has posted just 28 points, at a rate of 3.5 points per game.

Not only is Bamford’s recent form poor enough to justify moving him on, especially for Gameweek 31 Wildcarders, but Leeds’ upcoming fixtures are also rather ominous.

Between Gameweeks 31 and 33 they face Manchester City (away), Liverpool (home) and Manchester United (home), three of the hardest fixtures in the Premier League calendar.

Gameweek 34 is arguably when Leeds’ schedule becomes more obliging with Brighton (away), Spurs (home), Burnley (away), Southampton (away) and West Bromwich Albion (home) between then and the end of the season.

 RAPH WITH THE SMOOTH

While Bamford has experienced a dip in form, it is worth highlighting that Leeds were far from a poor side in their win over Sheffield United, which they dominated.

The Whites have now registered at least 20 shots in a Premier League game for the fifth time this season (23 in total), with only Manchester City doing so more often so far this term (six).

And, ahead of Leeds’ fixture swing, there was significantly more encouragement for Raphinha (£5.7m) owners in Gameweek 30 than Bamford backers.

It was the usual story for the Brazilian, who was the best player on the pitch by far, ran the show in terms of chances created although he had to make do with just six points based on the profligacy of his team-mates.

Raphinha provided an assist for Jack Harrison (£5.4m) in the first half, his second attacking return in as many matches and he could have had a seventh goal of the campaign had Phil Jagielka (£3.9m) not turned a second-half cross into his own net.

Meanwhile, Bamford, Ezgjan Alioski (£4.3m) and Stuart Dallas (£5.1m) both spurned fantastic chances created by Raphinha, who remains top of the Premier League for key passes over the last six matches.

It would be remiss of us not to point out Harrison’s impressive display, who has more attacking returns in Leeds’ last two matches than any colleague (three).

“The last two games he has had a bigger increase in his performance. Today he had a lot of influence. He was decisive and in the game against Fulham also. He is a player, when he manages to be at his best version, has an influence on our offensive game.” – Marcelo Bielsa

STRUIJK OUT

Out-of-position £4.0m defender Struijk starts in midfield for Leeds

With Leeds’ ominous fixtures on the horizon, interest in their defenders is not expected to be high across the next three Gameweeks.

The fact they were breached by Sheffield United is sure to plague Fantasy managers holding representatives from the Whites’ back-line.

Ben Osborn‘s (£4.7m) first-half strike was just the Blades’ seventh away goal all season and their first since the 2-1 win at Manchester United in January.

Meanwhile, there appears to be some uncertainty creeping into the equation as far as defensive personnel are concerned too.

A return from injury for Liam Cooper (£4.3m) on Saturday meant Pascal Struijk (£4.0m) missed out on the starting XI for only the second time since Gameweek 15.

Such a decision was an eye-opening one considering Struijk has arguably been one of Leeds’ best centre-backs in recent months.

“Pascal played very well against Chelsea and Fulham. In the training this week I saw Cooper was at his best. Cooper is the type of player who doesn’t lose his sharpness even if he can’t train for one or two weeks. When we confirmed that he was still in this manner, I opted for him. The two games Pascal played would have also made him deserving of continuing.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Whether he will reclaim his place in subsequent matches is hard to predict considering that Bielsa now has a number of centre-backs available and appears unwilling to clarify which ones he prefers.

“All the centre-backs have had the chance to play. Koch then Llorente, Cooper and Pascal. Ayling when he had to play there, even at one point Phillips. All of them had a very good level. In a season so long, the three most defensive positions, the two centre-backs and DM, good to be able to count on five players. Also considering Pascal, Koch and Llorente can play as defensive midfielders.”

Sheffield United’s injury problems continued in brutal fashion in Gameweek 30.

George Baldock (£4.9m) and Jayden Bogle (£4.3m) both sustained a concussion at Elland Road and must now observe the relevant protocol.

“As soon as George reported any symptoms, we have to take him off. It’s the same with Jayden not long into the second half. We accept you can’t take any chances. We’re led by the medics now. That’s probably right. We’ll see (if they’re okay). Obviously, they’ve been concussed and there’s now further protocols to follow. They’re being assessed by the doctors and we’ll know more towards the end of the evening.” – Paul Heckingbottom

Leeds United XI: Meslier; Alioski, Cooper, Llorente, Ayling; K Phillips; Harrison, Dallas (Koch 90+3′), Roberts (Klich 81′), Raphinha; Bamford (Rodrigo 65′).

Sheffield United XI: Ramsdale; Stevens, Jagielka, Baldock (Ampadu 45′); Osborn, Fleck, Norwood (Burke 65′), Lundstram, Bogle (Brewster 73′); McBurnie (Egan 77′), McGoldrick.

1 game doesn’t constitute form though. He’s got one goal and one assist in his last five games. Or two goals and one assist in his last eight games

That is true but i dont consider Bielsa's team to have any kind of form (or lack thereof), i see them more being a lottery team, in sense of you never know what you gonna get on each given week, may be a string of blanks, may be a run of hauls, but their prices makes it worth it. So i dont see Leeds players as typical "form has dropped" cases.
Hell, they may go riot attackingly versus next 3 teams who keep high line defenses and lose those games by 3-4

Either way, Bamford had a good run of games where he was scoring or assisting and then he had a run of games where he didn’t score or assist anywhere near as much so I think it’s a fair comment by the author to say his form has dropped.

    Mendy Forster
    TAA Dias Shaw Coady Mitchell
    KDB Bruno Lingard Jota Neto
    Kane Lacazette Iheanacho

Will do KDB to Son for DGW32

Triple City was the way forward for the last 3 months. Not so much now with Pep roulette and a blank gw in 33.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves and Leicester have good upcoming fixtures so it may be worth sprinkling some of their players into your WC team

Thanks. Stones and Dias are 90 or 0 min players so don’t think I’d leaving these two out.

Re Gundo, he is cheap and I have Watkins to cover him.

Interested that absolutely no one seems to be showing any interest in Ederson on WC

Simple to find a bench keeper for 33 and he has significantly better fixtures than Mendy to season's end. Really eff all difference between him and Dias over the season. Secure route into City defence. And there's a chance that he will overhaul Emi as best scoring keeper on the season given fixtures,

Pricey but it's points not value surely here on in.

    Ederson Rudiger > Mendy Dias?

    1. House Frey Wedding Planner

I think price and maybe not as many save points is the issue with Ederson. I got Dias & Cancelo in early when they were both below 5.5 so I wouldn't trade either for Ederson.

But if I had neither and was wildcarding, then I might consider Ederson if I wanted City clean sheet points with the minimum rotation risk

      1. pingissimus

Yep if you've a cheap Dias then there's a decent argument to keep him instead and hope the amazing black of any benchings continues. That is one of the wonders of the season really.

But there is a parallel lack of save point potential with Mendy who looks like becoming generic. Much prefer the City fixtures anyway for cs potential

The thing I don't like about Ederson is that he doesn't play in 33 which would mean overspending on GK.

Mendy plays every week until the end of the season. Dias can be benched for 33 for backup defenders.

        Fair enough

But 4.6 gets you an adequate back up in 33. It depends on how stretched your budget is I guess. But generally this season so far goalies have been equal value to defenders so personally happy to spend there and bench there. Not seeing a big difference between benching a keeper and a defender until now. Could change of course.

So you think Chelsea and Leicester get more clean sheets than City here on in?

Leicester defence is looking a bit dodgy to me and they have a poor run to end. Schmeichel needs save points.

Mendy Ederson closer but I'd back City to outperform Chelsea defence. Cost not an issue for me. Plenty had Dias earlier for no better returns after all.

I know what you mean about overspending on GK.....

As a rule I don't believe it's worth spending more than 9.5m out of your budget on two keepers though I think 8.5m is optimum if you hit it right early in the season

    - Raphinha >> Saka and use 0.3m to upgrade Mendy >> Lloris or Tierney >> Reguillon

Similar situation here. Still planning to use it then at the mo just because of the opportunity to go triple Liverpool, United, Leicester and the fact that a few others in my team have poor or suboptimal fixtures like Lingard, Dallas etc.

Which 1 of these 3 is best for wildcard please?

    A....raphinha (tough immediate fixtures)

B....neto (wolves low scoring buy great fixtures)

C....mount (means a little less spent on keepers and defence)

    Thanks

I quite like Mount as a differential.

Brought him in a few weeks ago and always looks likely to make something happen

      Tough

I'd go Raph just over Mount if you can use the money wisely. He's returning ever so consistently and I'd be slightly surprised if he triple blanked in the next 3.

Mount is a perfectly good call. Neto I just don't see.

    My actual team:

    Martinez - Forster
    dallas - struijk - cresswell - cancelo - shaw
kdb - son - bruno - soucek - smith rowe
    vardy - kane - bamford

    FT: 2
    ItB:0

how i can improve my team?
    replace kdb and cancelo?

My WC team is done. Would need to see something special or get an injury for me to change it I think.

    Mendy Forster
    Dias Reguilon Rudiger Coady Phillips
    Salah Fernandes Son Gundogan Jota
    Kane Antonio Iheanacho

I have 0.0m ITB as well. Gave up on building team value around GW21.

Nacho seems popular - clearly in form but bit of a risk given Maddison is back?

Roll FT in 32, Reguilon + Son/Gundo out in 33.

He's 8th attacker. He can rot on the bench if he gets dropped but I think his overall form will have him continue to start for a while especially since Maddison and Barnes aren't yet fully fit. Barnes didn't even make the bench.

True. I guess after yesterday, Jota has got to be less risky and you've got a playing defence if both Gundo and Nacho were benched

Had the exact same mid/attack but TAA's performances have me considering Fernandes -> Vardy to facilitate bringing him in. Looks very good.

0 interest in Vardy. Nacho is much cheaper and I think he's more nailed than other people do. He's been in good form lately. One quiet game vs City isn't gonna see him dropped after being named March player of the month.

The fact that he was brought off for Maddison early is slightly concerning, though you can afford to take the risk with him as a bench player.

      Smile at the Dias pick

Dislike the defence but attack is good. Aside from Reg there is little prospect of attacking returns from the back, One in 3 seasons from Coady doesn't tempt me.

That's because Coady put up incredible stats last year from an offensive stand point. He played 3240 minutes and only had 2 touches in the final third.

He wasn't allowed to go up for corners or set pieces and was just a sweeper. This season, he's getting into the box and looks a threat. He's more nailed than Saiss too.

Boly back might change things perhaps? His recent stats relate to the period when Boly was out.

Any thoughts on whether iheanacho is likely to continue to start? With barnes and maddison back it must be far less likely he'll get game time.

Raphinha will be my backup sub for him for next few weeks, though...

Barnes isn't back yet. I'm gonna keep Nacho as a sub. If he's dropped then he'll rot or get downgraded even more to Brewster for funds.

Yes, but mainly because I think the City defence double up is probably harder to judge with the full squad they've now got.

Also Bruno & Jota definitely ahead of Auba and Raph

    WC locks:

    Mendy
    TAA, Shaw
    Bruno, Son, Maddison, Jota
    Kane, Ihenacho

Salah too expensive, but will look to shoehorn him in for 33 against Newcastle.

Covering the Leicester and Wolves defence giving me the biggest headache atm. Feel it's a must given fixtures, but a load of uninspiring picks there.

Don't see the attraction in Leicester defence

Fairly short positive fixture run from 32 -35 and not especially prone to cs in any event. Only recent one was SHU.

Anything you'd change on this WC?

    Mendy Steer
    Rudiger Shaw Coady TAA Dias
    KDB Son Jota Salah Neto
    Kane Ihenacho Davis

Get Forster if you can for Steer I don’t think Neto is that great of a pick or Coady really. Would take Reguillon for that double aswell

For those bringing in Iheanacho on their WC’ers. What makes you all think he’ll keep his spot? Maddison returning has already reduced his minutes, what will happen when Barnes is back?

His excellent form will keep him from losing his spot imo.

If not, he's still just my 8th attacker and can be benched. All upside, not a lot of downside as far as I can see.

Isnt it a little too quick to jump on the Liverpool triple train?

Reason is because they still dont have the width. One match vs poor Arsenal changes everything?

Even If they dont rotate, how many matches will Salah, Jota or TAA play on their best level before it takes its toll?б

Liverpool play 7 of the worst 9 defense for the run-in. They've won all their last 3 games to nil.

I think now is the time.

Im not saying they dont the fix-s.
If they had been eliminated from the CL I would also take as much Liverpool assets I can.

But having Real Madrid round their fix-s in the league isnt encouraging.
Liverpool dont have the width of City

      B

But I'd also look at a TAA Jota Bruno combo. TAA has outpointed Mo in the last 15 or so and if you're looking for value that could be the way to go.

      Really wouldn't lose Bruno.
