Salah and Jota start together as Klopp benches Mané against Aston Villa

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Diogo Jota (£7.0m) start together for Liverpool as they host Aston Villa in Gameweek 31.

The two players contributed to the Reds’ impressive finish against Arsenal in Gameweek 30 and were both inside the top-five most-bought players for the most recent round of action.

Sadio Mané (£11.8m) is the man to make way this afternoon, dropping to the bench for the second time in four Premier League matches.

That means Jota starts on the left-hand side of Liverpool’s front-three, spearheaded by Roberto Firmino (£9.0m).

Curtis Jones (£4.4m) misses out as a precaution which means Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.3m), James Milner (£5.3m) and Fabinho (£5.4m) are the midfield trio today.

Nathaniel Phillips‘ (£4.1m) stock remains high, earning his fifth Premier League start from a possible six alongside Ozan Kabak (£5.0m).

There is also plenty of revived interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) this afternoon.

Having produced 33 points across his last five matches, the Liverpool right-back was purchased by 190,000+ managers ahead of the Gameweek 31, the most new owners for any defender this week.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are still without Jack Grealish (£7.5m) who recently suffered a setback on his return from a shin injury.

Bertrand Traoré (£5.9m) and Trézéguet (£5.2m) provide the width either side of Ollie Watkins (£6.5m) while Marvelous Nakamba (£4.3m) and Douglas Luiz (£4.8m) both feature in midfield with John McGinn (£5.5m).

Gameweek 31 Line-ups

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Kabak, N Phillips, Alexander-Arnold; Wijnaldum, Milner, Fabinho; Jota, Firmino, Salah.

Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Targett, Mings, Konsa, Cash; D Luiz, Nakamba; Trézéguet, McGinn, B Traoré; Watkins.

Gameweek 31 so far…

Fantasy Premier League managers who swerved from their Leeds assets found their Gameweek 31 win at Manchester City hard to watch.

Stuart Dallas (£5.1m) was the second-most benched player for the latest round of action but bagged a brace at the Etihad Stadium.

To add insult to that decision, Patrick Bamford (£6.6m), the third-most sold Fantasy asset ahead of Gameweek 31, provided the assist for his opener.

From a Manchester City perspective, this match was all about Pep Guardiola once again.

Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Rúben Dias (£6.2m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) were all unused substitutes while Ilkay Gündogan (£6.0m) and Phil Foden (£6.0m) both emerged from the bench for one-point cameos.

Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.4m) got the only attacking returns of the afternoon.

Provisional bonus points

  • 3 – Stuart Dallas
  • 2 – Bernardo Silva
  • 1 – Oleksandr Zinchenko

That's still a good score, don't worry about the top 10k accolade and have fun with the game.

Liverpool shot conversion rate at home 0.9%. Inexplicable.

They consistently shoot from impossible angles when a team mate is in a better position - must be a big goal bonus

Just dont understand what has happened to Robertson. He used to be such a threat bombing down that left channel creating chances. He just doesn't seem to do it anymore.

Not having VVD behind his back restricts him.

Either tactics tweaked, or the fact Mané has been completely off it affecting him, or more likely both. Also the fact you have no protection with VVD out means you can't have both fullback bombing forward the entire time.

Has to play deeper and tuck in to the back 4 without Van Dijk, Gomez or Matip. Managed 3 goal involvements in his 5 games with Van Dijk and only 3 in the last 25 games without him

VAR... what is it good for?

This season, there has been maybe less than 10% where I've felt its been of use when used.

It takes too long to come a conclusion, the close offsides are a joke, drawing lines from armpits.

Takes away the emotion from the game in that instant of scoring a goal.

Said it all along, within 10 years we will be having VAR ad breaks in game.

Has immensely improved the number of correct offside calls being given. I remember many howlers being called out by Hansen and Lawro on MotD after the event. Those have been removed now.

VAR could be improved on things like penalties and RCs. And it will with time.

Personally am pro the clock being stopped in football. They should switch to 60 min games with the clock stopped for stoppages (e.g. injuries, subs, ball out of play). Would reduce time wasting (as you can't waste time when the clock is stopped) and allow VAR to operate better.

Can agree to disagree.. where there is a clear offside, yes it can be used to make a fast decision.
They need to introduce a margin of error, as that one today and yesterday, if the play is paused a split second earlier they are "on side". That is my biggest issue, that it human controlled, and the fps is not up to it. Hence a margin of error is needed.

There's a philosophical gulf between people like you and me. Your vision of what football should be is dystopian to me. Some of the most iconic moments in football have been outside of the laws of the game. Who cares?

To me it's primarily entertainment. The biggest rush at the match is seeing your team score a goal. VAR kills that.

Watkins really is a cracking player imo

12 goals and counting in a mid ranked side that isn't especially attacking. That's only 3 fewer than Kane in open play and twice as many as Vardy.

whoever thinks VAR is a good idea needs there brain removing. completely ludicrous off sides i`ve seen. I remember when a Leeds player was pointing to where he wanted the ball, and his finger point made him off side.?????

so what you're arguing is that the offside law should be changed. That's completely separate to VAR.

Your suggested changed would affect football games that VAR isn't used in, so it isn't VAR you're complaining about.

Var was the problem with that goal. They measured the line from Jota’s forearm when he can’t score with it. That’s VAR’s fault simple as

You are moaning about marginal decisions where the rules are being applied consistently to every team (see Sheff Utd getting screwed by a toe, Wolves, Leeds etc.).

15 years ago you (or fans) were moaning about howler decisions where they missed offside errors everyone could see on a TV screen.

VAR has improved offside decision making in the PL.

Consistently? Maybe in your imagination. True consistency is impossible at the margins that these decisions are being made.

No, his point is a player pointing for where he wants the ball would be very unlikely to be called offside by a live linesman.
It’s too fine margin, of course on occasion a linesman may call it, but unlikely.

I thought this was the f’ing rule, what happened to ‘part of the body you can score with’

Another rule that went up in smoke before being implemented

Chuck it in the bag with the 6 second rule for keepers and others

Rules are the problem not VAR

    5. ReindeerHotdog

      VAR = Video Assistant Referee.

That itself has absolutely no influence on the rules, only to use video technology to analyse footage in line with the current rules.

The offside rule needs adapting. VAR has no bearing on that.

You're complaining about something totally different to VAR. This is why I hate it when people ask "Is VAR a good thing?" because the majority of people inclined to say no are actually talking about the rules they dislike rather than what VAR is and what VAR actually does.

In 2021 I don't know how anyone can be against using video technology to make more accurate decisions within sport especially as it is an absolutely huge industry upon which many, many livelihoods depend.

Its not a rule though. Its a human decision as to when the frame is stopped, and we already know the current cameras are not up to it.
A split second of marginal decisions goes from onside to offside.
Thats nothing to do with rules.
Its also a human deciding where the lines are drawn, again a judgment call on the day from the var
