Saints’ defensive woes bode well for Kane and Spurs in Double Gameweek 32

WEST BROMWICH ALBION 3-0 SOUTHAMPTON

  • Goals: Matheus Pereira (£5.4m), Matt Phillips (£5.1m), Callum Robinson (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m), Okay Yokuslu (£4.5m)
  • Penalty miss: James Ward-Prowse (£5.9m)
  • Penalty save: Sam Johnstone (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Johnstone x3, Robinson x2, Pereira x1

There will no doubt have been a few more Triple Captain chips activated between the hours of 6-8pm on Monday evening.

Southampton are one of the two sides that Tottenham Hotspur face in Double Gameweek 32 and the Saints turned in a thoroughly abject showing against West Bromwich Albion, succumbing to a 3-0 defeat.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side should have been well behind even before Matheus Pereira (£5.4m) opened the scoring from the spot, with Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m) wasting a big chance and having a headed goal chalked off for a more-than-dubious offside call.

Goals from Matt Phillips (£5.1m) and Callum Robinson (£5.2m) either side of half-time gave the scoreline a more just feel, with James Ward-Prowse’s (£5.9m) missed penalty compounding a miserable evening for the visitors.

While the distraction of an upcoming FA Cup semi-final could be used in mitigation for their wide-open defensive display, this wasn’t a one-off for the Saints.

Southampton have shipped 11 more goals than any other club from Gameweek 19 onwards (37 in 14 matches), 12 of which have come in their last four games.

No team have conceded more goals via the penalty spot (seven) in the Premier League this season than the Saints, either, which will be music to Kane’s ears.

As for the Baggies, they have now scored eight goals in their last two outings.

There have been eye-catching displays from the budget-friendly Robinson, Diagne and Phillips in Gameweeks 30 and 31 but from an FPL perspective, Pereira being on penalties and now in his favoured number 10 role has been key to unlocking his long-dormant points potential.

The playmaker has had nine shots in the last two Gameweeks alone, twice as many as any of his teammates.

Defensively, the impact of the excellent Okay Yokuslu (£4.5m) and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m) in front of the back four has been key: since the former’s debut in Gameweek 24, only Manchester United have conceded fewer goals than the Albion.

The remaining fixtures may not look great for the Baggies on paper but four of their final seven games are against mid-table sides, the type of opponent that subscribers of the ‘nothing to play for’ theory love.

West Brom XI: Johnstone, Furlong, O’Shea, Bartley (Ajayi 85), Townsend, Yokuslu, Maitland-Niles, Phillips, Pereira, Robinson (Gallagher 72), Diagne (Robson-Kanu 76).

Southampton XI: Forster, Walker-Peters (Djenepo, 87), Bednarek, Vestergaard, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Diallo, Walcott (Adams, 76), Armstrong, Ings (Tella, 87), Redmond.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 0-0 EVERTON

Saints' defensive woes bode well for Kane and Spurs in Double Gameweek 32 1
  • Bonus: Robin Olsen (£4.5m), Lewis Dunk (£5.0m), Ben White (£4.5m) x3

A tedious affair at the Amex Stadium was more notable for a player who wasn’t involved than the events on the pitch.

This didn’t feel like a match in which one team racked up 23 shots but that’s exactly what Brighton did, continuing a season-long profligate trend: their goal conversion rate of 8.2% in 2020/21 is worse than all bar two teams.

A more fitting reflection of the game was that there were only four shots on target throughout, with the south-coast clash the only Gameweek 31 fixture that didn’t feature a single ‘big chance’.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£7.6m) absence was not only keenly felt by an impotent Everton attack, but it also had implications – both positive and negative – for the legions of Fantasy managers who own the England international.

Carlo Ancelotti is hopeful of having his striker back for Gameweek 32, along with Allan (£5.2m) and Andre Gomes (£5.3m):

In the last training session, Dom had a little problem on his abductor. He came here but this morning he was not comfortable so I prefer to leave him out. It’s the same with Allan and Andre Gomes – they are not 100%. I hope they will be available for the next game.

An injury-hit Everton – who are Spurs’ other Double Gameweek 32 opponents – fielded six recognised defenders in the Monday night stalemate, with one of them, Yerry Mina (£5.5m), becoming the latest addition to the casualty list.

Ancelotti added after full-time:

Yerry Mina had a muscle problem on his adductor and I don’t think he will be available for a few weeks. The others, I hope to recover. For sure, Pickford will be available, I hope Allan and Gomes will be available, Calvert-Lewin and Joshua King.

Albion’s clean sheet was their tenth of the campaign, seven of which have arrived in 2021 – some belated reward for a solid backline with the third-best expected goals conceded (xGC) tally in the Premier League this season.

Brighton XI: Sanchez, Veltman, Dunk, White, Moder (Burn 87), Gross, Bissouma, Lallana, Trossard, Maupay (Jahanbakhsh 87), Welbeck.#

Everton XI: Olsen, Godfrey, Mina (Iwobi 58), Keane, Coleman, Davies (Broadhead 88), Holgate, Sigurdsson, Digne, Rodriguez, Richarlison.

With that defence, I'd be tempted to switch Digne to Pereira and you'll have a lovely back four for the rest of the season (provided Alonso starts).

Would probably bench Digne this week.

More than likely selling I think. Surely Trent has to be a better option for the remainder of the season. It's a less easy decision if you can't make that upgrade though.

    Morning,

Thinking ahead to GW33, do you think Cresswell & Stones to TAA & fodder is worth a -4?

Would mean I could put this team out whilst benching Kane and Son:

    Martinez
    TAA - Dallas - Veltman - Rudiger
    Salah - Bruno - Lingard - Jota
    Watkins - Nacho

    1. Tonyawesome69

    GTG?

    Martinez
    TAA, Rudiger, Stones
Son, Bruno (VC), Saka, Jota, Lingard
    Ihenacho, Kane (C)

    Subs: Pope, DCL, Coufal, Dunk

      1. Gudjohnsen
        • 7 Years

Stones is dead cheap and not worth a -4 for to get rid off imo.
Saka and DCL injury is annoying.
VC on Bruno is because of the failed logic on here to never have C and VC from the same team.

        1. Tonyawesome69

Stones has Dortmund on 14th, CHE FAC semi 17th then Villa 21st. He will play the cup games and rested for the Villa game imo.

Kane and Son with a double so it should be fine with the C and VC from the same team

Gonna head into GW32 like this with Son (c) as I'm chasing a 110 point mini league deficit and they currently don't own Son. Bench order correct? Got to start Dallas now over Coufal right?

    Lloris
    TAA Alonso Dallas
    Salah Son(c) Greenwood Lingard Raphinha
    Kane Ihenacho

    Martinez Bamford Coufal Konsa

Is there a way he/she could get Son in for this GW? Coufal at WB against Newcastle vs Dallas OOP in mid against Liverpool? Tough one there.

They could but think it involves a bit of re-jigging or selling Salah/Bruno which I'm not sure they'll do.

Always a chance that Alonso misses out again so Coufal would then come in. Equally could play Coufal instead of Raphinha?

        1. Tonyawesome69

I can't see them doing a rejig with 110 point lead! Prefer upside of Raphinha over Coufal. Raphinha could switch to the left side and exploit TAA defensive issues

I would start Coufal. Points chasing imo starting Dallas. You also have Liverpool attackers but no Newcastle attackers (thankfully). So a clean sheet for Coufal is something to root for while you want LFC to score against Leeds.

Interesting thoughts. Newcastle seem more than capable of scoring at the minute so Coufal has quite a low ceiling. Rival has Raphinha who they may or may not play so could go Coufal over Raphinha.

Decided to punt on Digne in 28 hoping for a double in 30. Then swapped him out for Cresswell marginally ahead of Dunk in 29 as a long term call. Not a bad decision just a very wrong one.

Bit of a disappointing start off the wildcard, but oh well... obviously barring any midweek injuries, I’m tempted to just roll my 1FT and 2.4m ITB...

    Martinez (Forster)
    TAA Dias Rudiger (Shaw Johnson)
    Bruno Son Jota Lingard Gundogan
    Kane(c) Vardy (Vydra)

... the plan in BGW33 then likely being Son out for Salah, funded by a small downgrade elsewhere (Vardy if he’s crap again, or a defender). Decent?

Would you play Shaw(BUR) or Rudiger(BHA) this week?

Villa away shouldn’t be pushovers, and they’ll have just come off a tough midweek game too - if they manage to get past Real he could well be rested maybe.

H2H leagues are the strangest things. I'm top of the league while there are at least 6 other managers with a higher OR than me.

This week, I won my H2H 44-38 lol.

In a community H2H league on here there was a guy ranked just outside 1000 OR who was until this week behind a team that was deleted in week 10!!! They're now level on points.

I'm in one where there are like 90 players, so not everyone plays each other. Which to me makes it a complete lottery.

The person who is top has basically just been given matches against a load of crap opponents compared to other players in the top 10 who have had to go against similarly ranked players.

I made a little script to run through the rankings of each weeks opponent for a player to check this, but I need to tidy it up before linking it anywhere

Anybody still holding on to 8 strong attackers? And, if so, what's the plan?

Keep on holding them til the bitter end and just accept you're gunna bench some hauls at some point? Or are you looking at someone like Vydra to bring in and have as a perma-bench option?

    This GW I could do;

    A) Bamford > Nacho (and just keep on going with 8 strong attackers - Watkins benched this week)
    B) Bamford & Gundo > Vydra & Salah (finally have a strong front 7 and Vydra -4)

Which one looks best do you think?

Not too bad as have Kane, Son, Bruno plus Jota and JLinz at a push if needed.

If you are sorted with captaincy, I would go with A. Nacho is hard to ignore when you look at form and fixtures. Seems like he is the main attacking threat for LEI

Although I purposely wildcarded into that 15 knowing they didn't all have a great fixture every week remaining, so the idea was always to use the full 15 in specific weeks

I don't understand why FPL managers are taking hits to get in Lloris who has Soton and Everton when their other GK is Martinez. Surely Martinez + 4 will outscore Lloris? I can't see Spurs keeping a CS anytime soon.

Haha... Talk about a benching dilemma. I'd start all 5 of those in isolation.

I'd definitely bench Fofana as Leic DF has been poor while WBA have really increased their attacking output.

Then it's between Holding and Rudiger for me for the last bench spot. Toss a coin?

    Ok how about this?

DCL+Gundog >> Son+Davis (-4)? And leave BB for another day? Annoying I’m in this mess so soon after WC. Don’t drink and FPL guys!!

    Mendy
    TAA. Rudiger. Holding
    Salah. Bruno. Lingard. Jota. Gundog
    Kane. Iheanacho
    (Forster, DCL, Coady, Shaw)

    1. TheDragon
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 6 days ago

It’s def best move if looking at this week in isolation but looking forward makes bench boost very difficult as you’ll likely have to -4 to replace Davis at some point (obv can’t with 1 transfer).

So perhaps need to think of the move this week as a -6/-8 and decide if Son is worth it

      1. RAFA THE GAFFA
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 6 days ago

Yeah true. I don’t like it tbh. I also think DCL will be fine and my back 5 are all great so I think BB could still be great. What about Salah >> Son and reverse it next week? And hit the BB if DCL is declared fit?

    2. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 6 days ago

Forster and Davis makes BB really tough of course but those look like good moves in principle.

A DGW in GW35 looks like your best bet for BB perhaps now but who knows what rotation will look like then and whether Forster is still in goal.

      1. RAFA THE GAFFA
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 6 days ago

What about Salah >> Son for 1 week? And if DCL is declared fit then hit the BB? As my back 5 are all great this week

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 6 days ago

Yeah just saw your post above - that looks very feasible to me. Like your back 5 a lot and with defensive returns and it's quite okay for a BB.

In a sense it's moot for BB value which players you actually bench in defence.

I'd go for it if DCL is fit. And arguably there's a case for still doing it with an attacking transfer to whichever budget forward you fancy from GW33 on - a return from Bam this week is definitely on the cards imo. The Everton DGW is looking less and less attractive as the lack of form there is pretty consistent now

Yeah. I probably won’t have a back 5 with fixtures like this. Might just prey DCL is fit and punt on Salah >> Son then reverse it next week.

Thanks for your input mate 🙂

    Would you BB this week?

    Mendy / Forster

    TAA / Castagne / Rudiger / Coady / Coufal

    Salah / Fernandes / Son / Jota / Lingard

    Kane / Iheanacho / Vydra

If not BB, which 3 to start out of the defence?
