FFS readers have their say on whether ESL will affect FPL plans this season

A large number of Fantasy Football Scout readers are not planning to make any changes to their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) plans in light of the recent European Super League (ESL) announcement.

On Sunday evening, six Premier League teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur) issued their intention to join a breakaway tournament, a move which has been met with criticism from football’s existing governing bodies.

However, our readers are not looking to amend their own plans for managing their FPL teams between now and Gameweek 38, according to the early results from a recent poll.

83.7% of 1,756 people who had responded by mid-morning on Tuesday endorsed the response that, “I won’t change any of my FPL plans this season because of the ESL”.

That said, such a result correlated largely in line with the reaction to the wider question of whether readers are in favour of the ESL itself, with 83.0% of respondents confirming that they were not.

Readers were offered several options to indicate that the announcement of the proposed ESL might influence their thinking in how they play FPL over the closing weeks of the season, but none of them has received more than 5% approval:

Among the alternatives available the single most popular is a principled stand to avoid players from the six clubs involved, a sentiment backed by around 1 in 20 respondents with a smaller number preferring to withhold the captaincy from those assets as a personal protest.

Just over 100 managers suggest they are more concerned about the motivation of players caught up in the turmoil and will not be captaining, or in many cases even signing and/or owning them. Almost 4.0% of managers said they were most concerned about how the unfolding story might affect the chips they have held back to use as late-season rank boosters.

With regard to the concept of the ESL itself, managers appear already to have formed clear opinions:

Reflecting the strength of views already clearly expressed by many on social media and outside Premier League grounds, opinion is weighted firmly and decisively against the formation of the new league with only 11.94% of respondents wanting to know more before adopting a firm point of view. It should not be ignored however, that just over 1 in 20 taking the survey declared that they are in favour of the breakaway.

From the sparse information given about the ESL so far, we know the clubs involved intend to continue playing in the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A as they do now, substituting in their own format for UEFA’s current competitions across approximately 20 midweek fixtures.

However, it is already clear that existing governing bodies intend to obstruct these ambitions as much as their laws, competition rules and contracts allow. The next few days could be very important for understanding what the future holds for football.

Still more likely it doesn’t happen than it happens (in my opinion).

Having listened to some people pretty high up in football, they think it’s just a power play in their negotiations with UEFA about the CL.

The proposal was ‘needed’ to let UEFA know that the big clubs mean business and it’s not just a bluff ...it is!).

I think it’ll be sorted by negotiations with UEFA, and inevitably the big clubs will get a bigger slice of the pie as a result.

    Any help appreciated here chaps

I’d love a bit of TAA in my team, but just not sure how to go about it...

    ..........Martinez
Rudi -Velt - Coady - Shaw
    Bruno - Salah - Linz - Jota
    ......Watkins - Nacho
Bench: Kane - Son - Stones
    0 ITB & 0FT

Maybe wait a week and do Bruno > Greenwood & Stones > TAA?

Yeah you almost certainly need a points hit, and also need news that Kane is going to miss SHU or alternatively offer up Bruno to the FPL Gods as sacrificial lamb

Greenwood is in the zone though - great little pickup with Lingard/Jota-esque potential for the run-in, especially with Tony Gloves broken

      Greenwood at the moment.

But I think if you don’t have one of Bruno or Salah then that could affect my thinking.

E.g You don’t have Salah but have Bruno, then get Jota.

Marcus Rashford has spoken out against the European Super League by posting a picture containing a quote from Sir Matt Busby. The quote says that "football is nothing without the fans".

It's a shame as as a foreigner looking in, it seems the FA and most big clubs now seemingly don't care and haven't cared about the fans for years. If the FA cared they should start by abolishing these Monday and Tuesday night matches

That's him & Bruno both now

Would love to see a manager throwing their ring in the hat - and properly, not avoiding it like Zidane or lightly like Klopp/Pep

Conte, Guardiola, Koeman, Solksjaer, Arteta, Zidane, Simeone - these guys were all serious players, all were leaders on the pitch. Klopp may not have been a great player, but he has still been at times an absolutely incredible leader of men as a manager

Surely one man amongst them would have the balls to outright condemn it and stand up for their principles, and the principles of the fans

Those guys all already have more money than they'll ever be able to spend so worst case were they to lose their jobs they can still put food on the table for them & theirs

And whether it went ahead or not they would forever be remembered as making a stand for the game that gave them so much for so long - and showed through their actions, not just their words that they were not willing to partake with the parasites & vampires

It would only take one to collapse the house of cards

Imagine the 8 of them got together & organised to say that upon reflection, and having had time to digest the impacts - they unanimously are disgusted & will resign before their club plays a single game in a protectionist "Superleague" cartel

It would be incredible - football fighting back against Joel Glazer, JP Morgan, Ed Woodward, Florentino Perez, Daniel Levy & every other scumbag who put their name to it

At this early stage yes - but remember they can walk away from clubs any time they want (they just have to forgo future wages and settle for only being multi-millionaires rather than... well, multi-millionaires)

And if - upon proper internalisation of all the details - say in 4 weeks time when seasonal obligations have been fulfilled - they decide that the proposal is against their principals - they are free to act accordingly

Money on one hand, honour on the other

When the news first broke I was excited by the prospect. The prospect that we could have a year round exhibition league running parallel to existing competitions. It would be like preseason comps but with something to play for. These clubs have fanbases that surely cover 90% of fans of football worldwide. Neutrals love watching heavyweight clashes too.

When it transpired that it would replace the CL for participating clubs I lost all interest in the idea. The fact that it removes competition from leagues and lessens the value from other cups is a showstopper.

It goes against everything football is about. Achievement and merit.

I dont mind the notion and UEFA has managed the CL poorly for a while now has justified a change.

But the fact that it takes sporting merit and results on the pitch completely off the table is disgusting. Arsenal and Spurs and Liverpool think they can play in a "best of the best" competition after trash seasons? What a joke

Well exactly. Man City have popped up as a superpower in the last decade. How fortunate it is that they got the invitation now. If this had been set up in 2005, the founders with guaranteed spots would certainly not include Spurs or City!

It’s just whoever is richest at this moment in time, which the exception of AC Milan who have a rich history.

Pre-Abramovich, it wouldn't have included Chelsea either.
A few years earlier, Everton were one of the biggest English teams.
If it was based on teams that have won the European Cup/Champions League more than once, the line-up would be:
            Real Madrid (13)
            AC Milan (7)
            Bayern Munich & Liverpool (6)
            Barcelona (5)
            Ajax (4)
Manchester United & Inter Milan (3)
Juventus, Benfica, Nottingham Forest & Porto (2)

No Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester City or Atletico Madrid.
Bayern Munich, Ajax, Benfica, Nottingham Forest and Porto instead.

              It just highlights the ridiculousness

The arrogance of these scumbags thinking they are entitled to stop the music and say “everyone in a chair gets to stay, everyone else - sorry you’re out”

They’re just riding roughshod over decades and decades of tradition & history, in the name of their own greed, and having the nerve to dress it up as “saving football” or being “for the fans”

I’d like to think as soon as the season’s finished, if not before, we’ll get collective or even just individual action from one or all of Conte, Guardiola, Simeone, Koeman, Zidane, Solksjaer, Arteta, Klopp, Pirlo etc - hopefully they are football people with football at their heart - it may not change the outcome, but they’d go down in history as men of principle and honour

I voted no, but I also have no little faith of the transparency of the current football councils of UEFA, FIFA and numerous domestic bodies. As the Greek saying goes 'when the fishy stinks, he stink from the head'. Football has lacked decent regulation for years.

I'd like to see a fairer shake for lower-league teams and grass-roots football. Far too much money at the top and not enough at the bottom.

Football is interwoven into the fabric of a lot of towns and is the mainstay of a lot of livelihoods. It's important it stays within the realm of the generations of hard-working people who made it possible to breed that success from the beginning.

The part I fail to understand is why UEFA, in the inevitable discussions when ESL falls through, should take brand equity into consideration and not performance alone when rewarding clubs. An ESL club should be able to drive a lot of extra revenue from sponsorships etc that a club like Leicester can only dream of. If they can't do that they should either balance their books or do more to drive revenue of their brand but NOT change the rewards to make it more even more unfair and boring.

The ESL clubs already generate more revenue through sponsorships and international audiences through other channels, why do they need a bigger slice of the pie in UEFA tournaments?

Why should UEFA reward Juventus with more money to partake in a best of the best tournament when they've been beaten by Ajax Porto and Lyon, who are teams with smaller financial incomes?

totally agree - the big clubs already benefit from the global fanbase with huge commercial opportunities.

The fact that the clubs are unable to run profitably comes squarely down to their own financial mis-management. Stop paying £300k pw wages perhaps?

I'm against salary caps. The clubs and players should be able to settle that. However they should be able to do it without funnelling money from dictatorships or running deficits in the billions for years on end etc. etc.

Very true, just very hard finding that balance. Maybe try implement something similar to what they do in Germany with that 50 + 1 rule?

Problem is that there is such a great disparity between wages among the Super Six and the Fighting Fourteen that to find a meaningful salary cap that applied to all 20 clubs would be really tricky

        1. Thomas Magnum
          • 5 Years

I agree it would be tricky, but I guess the best way to do it is for the association to evenly split up the money from broadcast deals among all the teams and follow a similar structure to other leagues with salary caps. The super 6 who generate more revenue can use it to fund their youth programs and facilities. We wouldn’t be talking petty cash in the salary it would still be big money but would mean that all clubs get as level of a playing field as we could get. I doubt it would ever happen but for me it would make the league much more interesting to watch if we don’t have the same teams winning every year

Cap teams like they do in the NFL. It helps to even the playing field greatly.

Salary caps would have to be introduced globally in order to ensure fair play. This is what a governing body is for. You can't tie the hands of one league and allow others an advantage. It unbalances the very essence of fairness

Good but all teams need to do it to work. Otherwise players will just go to a different league

Wouldn't be surprised if we in a couple of years have commercial breaks every 5 minutes like the super bowl. Football will become unwatchable.

Yep, wouldn’t be surprised if they find the time to air short commercials during injury stoppages, when balls going into the stands, or if they even take extra time to restart the game after goals in order to play a commercial...
Maybe I’ve said too much and they’ve started taking notes!

With the UK being out of the EU .... the UK govt could impose the requirement for work permits for any non-UK player for the Sultry 6 ...... imagine ... playing in a ESL and your entire squad bar say three players have to be British .... immediately puts the Soulless 6 at a massive disadvantage ... just as well they can’t get relegated the mugs.

Interesting to see Bayern and Dortmund reject the proposals - imagine they’ll cave and join if the ESL progresses

The cash these teams would get would pretty much eliminate all domestic competition too, so it’s pretty irrelevant that it’s a closed shop as such, clubs not involved wouldn’t have the financial means to compete in order to get it

Hi Az, something I forgot to mention in my feedback about separating the comments from the articles, is that you need a mod to check comments (if all on a shared feed) maybe twice a day and put them into a Hot Topic if it's an interesting discussion point or asks a topical question, or link it to an article if it feeds back on that article. Maybe get some tagging software to ID RMT and A-B questions and put them into separate buckets. Get helpfulness ratings for users who respond to them?

Me. Chambers benched, Phillips injured, Ward blank gw, Mendy rotated, Dias only left and he too looks set to be rested, of all the seasons of fpl, this is the worst unpredictable season. I mean, who rotates goalkeepers? Who does that? We never had this much rotation 2 or 3 years ago.

GW33 will see Aston Villa host West Bromwich, Crystal Palace host Leicester City, Sheffield United host Brighton & Hove, and Wolverhampton host Burnley. Lead leaders West Ham, nine points ahead of Leicester City with five to go and a match in hand, will have a friendly hosting Chelsea as well as Everton's friendly hosting Arsenal and Newcastle's friendly hosting Liverpool. Leeds meanwhile travels to Manchester United for a friendly. Fulham and Southampton have a blank GW. Relief is being felt at the bottom of the table as the Big Six are the teams to be relegated. Meanwhile excitement reigns in the Championship League as five teams will see automatic promotion and teams 6-9 will play for the 6th promotion spot as the Big Six will play no higher than League Two next year IF THEY RESCIND THEIR SUPER LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP and chose to return to the league.

Abrahamovici always felt likely to cave first - he actually likes football and owning a club.

A long time Chelsea fan, was bitterly dissapointed last couple of days, but had a hunch something like this could happen. Abramovich really doesn't need this superleague, Chelsea is not swimming in red financial status like some of the top 12 clubs.
Happy and proud of my club again, any mistake can be undone and forgiven, and this one will too 🙂

Yep. Although i assume things will get a bit harder from here on because its widely known that Abramovich was hugely invested in Chelsea as a club. Antonio Conte even recently said that Roman often came to trainings to ask about formation,tactics,etc..he is genuinely invested in reputation and success of the club, not just the financial side of it.
From the other ESL clubs, i really dont see which owner shares that same passion...maybe Man City could follow due to also great financial status.

Kroenke, Henry, Glazer, unfortunately i dont see them "seeing their mistakes" anytime soon
