Bale’s superb home form against also-rans bodes well for Gameweeks 36 and 37

We’ve Fantasy-flavoured write-ups of two Premier League matches to bring you from Sunday, with both north London clubs emerging victorious.

It should have been three matches summarised, of course, but Manchester United v Liverpool was postponed earlier today.

A new date is yet to be announced for that fixture, with further details in the linked article here:

Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Sheffield United

by Neale Rigg

  • Goals: Gareth Bale (£9.1m) x3, Son Heung-min (£9.6m)
  • Assists: Serge Aurier (£5.2m) x2, Son, Steven Bergwijn (£7.0m)
  • Bonus: Bale x3, Aurier x2, Son x1

FLAT-TRACK BALEY

Gareth Bale‘s (£9.1m) hat-trick against Sheffield United on Sunday took his tally to nine Premier League goals for the season, four of which have been scored under interim Tottenham Hotspur manager Ryan Mason.

But his 21-point haul against the Blades was a mere continuation of the flat-track bullying he was only sporadically allowed to mete out under Jose Mourinho.

All nine of his goals have arrived in home matches and all nine have been scored in encounters with bottom-half teams.

An away fixture against a much-improved Leeds United defence in Gameweek 35 might not be a good match-up for the Welshman, then, considering how he’s either struggled or been overlooked against trickier opposition – although the availability of Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) could determine just how unfavourable that game is.

Leeds with Phillips in starting XI (per game)Leeds without Phillips in starting XI (per game)
Points1.640.67
Goals scored1.601.11
Goals conceded1.401.89

It’s also a Double Gameweek for eight other teams while Spurs play just the once, so any inbound transfer activity in Fantasy Premier League might be more muted as a result.

But two more favourable mid-table opponents then follow in Gameweeks 36 and 37.

Wolves are fresh off the back of a 4-0 hammering by Burnley, while Aston Villa haven’t kept a clean sheet in seven Premier League matches – that’s the division joint-longest current run without a shut-out.

A “happy” Bale aimed another sly dig at Mourinho in his post-match interview:

I feel good, I just needed to play games and just get a run of games. I’m happy and when I’m happy, I normally play well.

We’re more on the front foot, we’re closer to the goal and able to score more. We’ve been working on that for the last few weeks. It’s not going to happen overnight but I feel like we’re taking a step in the right direction and we’re playing football the Tottenham way.

HARRY FLOPPER

Four Spurs goals and not a single involvement from Harry Kane (£11.9m), who was backed with the Gameweek 34 captaincy by huge swathes of the Fantasy community.

It was simply one of those matches for the England international who, while far from his best and perhaps still not at full tilt after his recent ankle injury, still had plenty of opportunities to emerge from this clash with more than appearance points to his name – a stoppage-time ‘big chance’ spurned by Sergio Reguilon (£5.6m) denied Kane even a consolation assist and capped off a frustrating evening.

Son Heung-min (£9.6m), who curled home a superb fourth goal for Spurs after earlier setting up a breakaway Bale strike, made it back-to-back double-digit hauls under Mason, as many as he managed in his final 15 appearances under Mourinho.

BACK FOUR GOOD

Mourinho’s final days in north London saw some chopping and changing of personnel at the back, which unsurprisingly resulted in a glut of chances and goals being conceded.

Mason has kept it simple since his appointment and has named an unchanged back four in all three of his competitive matches in charge.

Full-backs Serge Aurier (£5.2m) and Reguilon will be of most interest to Fantasy managers, having supplied three assists between them in Gameweeks 33 and 34.

It was Aurier’s turn to shine against the Blades, with the right-back setting up Bale’s first and third goals.

The Ivory Coast international created four chances in Gameweek 34, getting forward a lot more than he had done when Reguilon had assumed attacking responsibilities against Southampton.

As for defensive competency, a match against Leeds will be a truer test of the Spurs backline’s ability given that a feeble Sheffield United side provided little menace in north London.

Spurs XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso (Winks 70), Bale (Bergwijn 75), Dele (Lamela 78) Son, Kane.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale, Basham, Egan (c), Stevens, Baldock, Norwood, Osborn, Fleck, Bogle (Berge 46), McGoldrick (Mousset 84), Brewster (Burke 46).

Newcastle United 0-2 Arsenal

by David Wardale

  • Goals: Mohamed Elneny (£4.2m), Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (£11.3m)
  • Assists: Aubameyang, Gabriel Martinelli (£4.9m)
  • Bonus Points: Elneny x3 Hector Bellerin (£5.0m) x2 Aubameyang x1
  • Red Cards: Fabian Schar (£4.8m)

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (£11.3m) delivered a first double-digit haul since Gameweek 24 as Arsenal cruised past a seemingly disinterested Newcastle United.

The Gabon international has had a stop-start season of injury, illness and form dips, but over his last six starts, he’s produced five goals and an assist – exactly half of his attacking output for the entire campaign.

Unfortunately, those starts have been spread across nearly three months of action/inaction, but a hamstring injury to Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) might just allow him to finish the season with the sort of bang expected of a player with such a lofty Fantasy price tag.

Central Planning

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has played Lacazette centrally for much of the season, leaving Aubameyang, when available, to flit in and out of games from the left flank.

Handed the lone striker role at Newcastle, he seized the opportunity with hungry hands.

While the midfielder was fortunate to gain an assist when his woefully mis-hit shot flew to Mohamed Elneny (£4.2m) to score his first ever league goal, Aubameyang’s own strike to seal the win was a classy, acrobatic finish from Gabriel Martinelli‘s (£4.9m) excellent cross.

Martinelli was another to impress, producing a second attacking return in three starts.

For context, however, it must be stressed that Newcastle were desperately off the pace from start to finish, conceding early and never looking like finding a way back into the game for the next 85 minutes.

So poor were they that their most notable incident involved Fabian Schar‘s (£4.8m) 18-minute cameo as a substitute ending with a straight red card for his ill-judged tackle from behind on Martinelli.

Mikel’s Musings

Arteta’s pre-match comments regarding the fitness of Lacazette (and that of Kieran Tierney (£5.2m)) suggest Aubameyang could be in for a busy end to the season.

They haven’t trained with us yet. So it’s unlikely we’ll have them ready in the next few games.

The Gunners boss used Nicolas Pepe (£7.6m) in place of Lacazette for the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Villareal and may well do the same again on Thursday.

His comments after the Newcastle win certainly pointed to Aubameyang being eased back into the side:

We missed him for a few weeks with illness. He is getting back to fitness slowly. Today we played him to see how he was and he looked good.

But such was his impact that Aubameyang, as the team’s only genuine goalscorer currently fit, could well be used to help the Gunners’ quest for a Europa League final place, seeing as that competition is their sole chance of getting Champions League football next season.

If so, his pitch-time for Arsenal’s Double Gameweek 35 – they’ll face West Brom and then Chelsea – would probably be rather more limited as the player himself acknowledged how tough has been his return from a recent bout of malaria:

The doctors did incredible work with me and I am really pleased with them and have to say thank you to them. The last five minutes I was dying a little bit, but to tell the truth I felt good for most of the game and I was happy with that.

Less happy was centre-half David Luiz (£5.4m), who returned after a four-Gameweek absence, only to limp off with a hamstring issue early in the second half.

Arteta was not optimistic about his prospects:

He felt something in his hamstring so it’s not good news. He’s put such a shift to be back with the team for the last few weeks after the knee surgery and it’s a real shame.

Rotation Risks

Arsenal’s end-of-season scenarios don’t exactly scream Fantasy investment.

Should they make the Europa League final, that would surely mean major Gameweek 38 rotation as that league match (a dead rubber against Brighton) comes just three days before the May 26 European showpiece.

Given that the Gunners don’t have a fixture at all in Gameweek 36, that would leave them with just one other match – away at Crystal Palace – once their latest league double is done.

And if they don’t make the final, their season is effectively over anyway.

So, Fantasy managers will essentially be left with a choice of players who will either be rotated with Europe in mind – Arteta made eight changes from the Europa League side for the trip to Tyneside – or deflated and ready for the beach.

Holidays certainly seemed on the Newcastle players’ minds, which is understandable given that they’re nine points clear of Fulham in 18th place and will face Scott Parker’s side on the final day anyway.

Stranger things have happened, but Fulham are unlikely to win their final four fixtures, while West Brom will need to win four of their last five as well for the Magpies to go down instead of them.

And for that to happen, Newcastle will have to lose all of their final four games, although on the strength of Sunday’s performance, that’s not unfeasible.

But to all intents and purposes, Steve Bruce’s men are as good as safe, which is just as well when they’ll face Leicester and Manchester City next.

Newcastle United XI (5-3-2): Dubravka; Clark (Gayle 84), Dummett, Fernandez (Schar 72), Ritchie, Murphy; Shelvey, Longstaff, Almiron (Joelinton 73); Saint-Maximin, Wilson.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Bellerin, Luiz (Chambers 53), Gabriel, Xhaka; Elneny, Ceballos; Odegaard (Partey 85), Willian, Martinelli; Aubameyang (Pepe 78).

Any reason why Bale shouldn't start games or extend his stay at Tottenham?
    9 goals in 16 games.
He's still miles better than Lamela, Bergwijn, and offers more of a goal-threat over Lucas.

He can walk the walk as well as Kane imo. Should Spurs sell Kane and upgrade their midfield and defense, Bale could be the striker imo. Son and Moura can do the running and Alli is still there. They need new Eriksen or two and better defs though. Kane is good, but should he want to go, no point not to cash imho.

Really the only teams worth considering would be New Orleans or Pittsburgh and both have QB plans and zero cap space.

You’re right, I can’t see the NO trade just because they’re in conference and the Steelers don’t normally trade multiple if any first round picks. Seattle another one but in conference and he’ll lose his mind when he’s pressured every drop back. ESPN just need a story like this to salvage ratings

Yeah we wouldn’t do it. Pittsburgh doesn’t have the capital or the cap space. If he does hold out, we should ship him to Denver, I’d love to see that. Like sending Favre to the Jets lol

Yeah you're right about that, all the stories say he wants out (which I believe he does) but they love forgetting that he's still under contract. Imo only realistic landing spots for him would have to be either Denver or Las Vegas it seems, your draft wasn't spectacular but wasn't a total bust either so won't be in a worse position than last year should (when) he comes back

I loved our draft, take a look at the corners taken after Eric Stokes, it was his teammate at Georgia (zero play making ability on the ball), Asante Samuel Jr (undersized slower) and a bunch of third tier guys. I think we wanted him more than Newsome who was taken earlier. The guy has 4.25 speed, takes the ball away, and had amazing stats vs the NFL talent he faced over 3 yrs. He had a bad coverage grade because he had 10 penalties in college, but Jerry Gray can teach him to clean that up and I love that aggressiveness. Target percentage in the low 40% range means teams didn’t want to throw his way.

Amari Rodgers is going to be a star, great hands, son of a respected coach, gives us a true slot receiver and a guy who can produce on bubble screens and sweeps. Character guy, 2nd round grade.

The center we got is a 4 year starter at Ohio state, plays all three interior line positions and we ranked him #1 at his position. We got raked for not taking the Oklahoma kid but it looks like the only thing he’s going to smash is the buffet. I stand by the pick and we really needed a blue chip replacement for Linsley. This allows Jenkins to play LT if Bak isn’t healthy day one

Your first 3 picks were class imo, maybe the center was a reach in the second but like you said he’ll be a day 1 starter. I wonder if jordan love will turn out better than any day 1 QB’s taken this year though

Should have beat them in the championship, choked it away like Seattle and SF nfc championship games. It’s been tough, but I think we get one.

Love is as good a prospect as any, but I don’t necessarily believe in him more than most rookies. I think it was more about insurance for Rodgers and I hope he can be that for us this year.

Dude he is going to the Broncos.

They need a quarterback and passed on fields and mac. Wonder why?

He gave the packers 3 trade destinations of choice. 49ers (packers won't do that) raiders and Broncos.

        Fiance lives in boulder Colorado.

He wont play for the packers again unless they fire gute which they wont.

He will retire if they dont trade him because he is that stubborn and has made up his mind.

The packers know him too well to not trade him and get the kings ransom they deserve for him.

The best chance for their project was always into trade Aaron Rodgers and surround love with weapons. Rodgers is forcing it a year early.

They will eventually deal him after June 1st when the cap hit is far less

Wait, he’s so mad about a lack of weapons that he goes to .... Denver? Downgrade defensively, Swiss cheese offensive line. They wouldn’t even win their division.

He is not leaving because of a lack of weapons though the lack of weapons is a part of it. He is leaving because he hates gute for picking love and green bay clearly have a plan to move on from Rodgers in one or two years and they are sticking to that plan. Rodgers wants no part of this plan and the only thing he can do about it is retire which he will 100% do. That's the point. He gets traded only if green bay realise he is not bluffing. I dont think they are humble enough to admit mistakes. They should fire gute. They wont. They should trade Rodgers instead of letting him retire. They might do that. He believes he can turn Denver into contenders and I would not bet against him. Their team is not bad. It's missing a good quarterback

              Where to start...
1- He hasn’t spoken on the record to anyone, it’s ludicrous to claim he is 100% going to retire.
2- Gute is an outstanding GM and he is as secure as anyone in the organization.
3- Love was drafted when Rodgers was 36 years old. Are we not supposed to have a competent backup to a player who hasn’t finished the season 3 times? That would be complete mismanagement.
4- The Broncos are a bottom 10 team with issues all over both sides of the ball. The Raiders are better, but both are the equivalent of Kane going to Burnley next year.
5- humble.. this is the most ridiculous part. The franchise has been built around him, his teammates are purportedly more important to him than his own family, but he is going to leave a Super Bowl competitor because we drafted a backup? Tell me again who needs to be humble. The GM nor the President have anything to apologize for and if these stories are true, his true colors are there for all to see. Winner? No. Leader? No. Loyal to the organization that got rid of our favorite son to give him his chance? Well that will be a sad day for Packers fans, but an even worse day for his integrity as a man.

I love green bay. I know gute is a great gm. He is aggressive and is an exceptional scout which is a huge asset as a gm. Green bay's future is bright with him at the helmet.

But... he stuffed up on the way he handled Rodgers with the love pick. He should have called. He should have explained. I dont think it's wrong to plan for the future and I think the plan to move on from Rodgers when his salary allows was sound. But you cannot expect Rodgers to just sit around and let you get rid of him. Rodgers has every right to be angry and I hope we do trade him. We have never helped him. He deserves a team with a win now mentality which we are not and wont be until love takes the helmet and we change our draft approach which I suspect we will. My dream scenario is Rodgers goes to the AFC and wins two more superbowls to prove we held him back while gute builds green bay into a dynasty that wins multiple superbowls in his tenure. They can both be right about this. Let the man go. He deserves the chance

I hate that green bay are planning to move on from Rodgers. I think it's stupid and I am glad he proved them wrong last year. But the damage is done. Green bay want the mvp for one more year maybe two while they get their boy ready. Rodgers is no puppet. You commit to him or he leaves via trade or retirement. If I were green bay and I really believed in my plan, i would honestly trade Rodgers now and surround love with everything we didn't give Rodgers. It might take a couple years but if love is as good as they think he is it might still work out. We wont know that gute is wrong until love has had a couple years in the league. Not trading Rodgers iscdisasyrous if he retires because that means you dont have anything in return to help your boy which was and is the plan. They were always going to trade Rodgers and he knows it

I hear you, but if he retires now, his career is going to be a punchline and it won’t be the team’s fault. Love was never drafted to replace Rodgers, nobody has ever considered starting him, every single player on the roster has a backup and if Rodgers is so insecure that he can’t deal with that idea, he deserves to be remembered as a great talent with an attitude problem and a losing playoff record. Our offense works with Love, but if we were to move Rodgers, we would trade for a experienced starter that could stretch the field. All of this is click bait, if Denver offered us both of their next two drafts, we still wouldn’t move him.

It’s unlikely they would trade him to an NFC team.

Going to the Broncos makes no sense. He’d be going from throwing to Davante Adams, Robert Tonyan and handing off to Aaron Jones to handing off to Gordon or throwing to Jeudy and Courtland Sutton.

Surely he’d need to go to a win now team? Houston possibly, depending on what happens to Deshaun Watson.

The backup comment is silly. Please. Stokes is no threat to jaire. Why? You can put more than one cornerback on the field. This holds for most positions. Amari no threat to davante. Love is Rodgers replacement. Traded up 1st round picks are not back ups. Stokes plays this year. Jaire played straight away. Savage plays. Gary plays and so on. If you traded up in the first round for a back up you are a nutcase. Dont disrespect gute with that stupidity. You and I both know he is better than that

I know it's fashionable to whinge here, but if you had 3-4 players in that postponed match plus a couple of other DNPs (Rudiger, ManC, Saka/Holding etc.) you're not special. 8-9 players is the norm now for this GW.

And I think the likely reschedule makes GW35/36 much easier to navigate for most.

Obviously if you had an extreme ownership level of ManU and Liverpool players (5-6), you've lost out.

But IMO the next biggest loser is anyone still with a chip, or who only had 1-2 players in the game so they could attack 35/36 without a chip.

Anyone in the middle (3-4 players) will be fine.

Yes. I'm down to 8 this GW (Shaw, Bruno. Salah, Phillips, Saka, Rudiger no shows) but still on for a small green arrow so GW34 isn't a major problem as far as I'm concerned. The bigger issue for me is that I'm now not as likely to make big strides up the OR by BBing GW35 (probably only gain Salah and Phillips fixtures, no TAA, Jota etc), and when FHing GW36 (if WBA blank, not MUN)
