Fit-again Antonio bursts back onto the FPL scene in time for season run-in

Burnley 1-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Chris Wood (£6.4m) | Michail Antonio (£6.4m) x2
  • Assists: None | Said Benrahma (£5.9m), Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m)
  • Bonus: Antonio x3, Coufal, Benrhama x2

The fit-again Michail Antonio (£6.4m) is back on the Fantasy radar after a brace against Burnley on Monday evening.

It was a trademark Antonio display with two opportunistic goals from inside the six-yard box, a spurned ‘big chance’ and lots of positive underlying numbers to back up his eye-catching performance.

Fitness, not form, is Antonio’s main worry from a Fantasy perspective as he seems as likely to pull up with a muscle strain as deliver a monster score; this double-digit haul, oddly, was his first of 2020/21.

David Moyes at least had some positive words to say on his condition after full-time:

I was a little bit surprised, he has come back in better condition than when he dropped out, but we never really felt that he had such a bad injury that it was going to be so serious. But I thought he looked in super condition, he has been working really hard and he deserved his two goals tonight and on another day he should have scored another two so there is a bit of both.

Not that we need another West Ham midfielder to add to the mix but Said Benrahma (£5.9m) produced possibly his best display of the season in Lancashire.

A beneficiary of Moyes’ decision to switch from a wing-back system to a back four, Benrahma lined up on the left of a 4-2-3-1 and had more final-third touches than anyone else on show.

Registering four shots of his own and creating five chances, Benrahma teed up Antonio’s second goal with a superb inswinging cross.

He remains a risky punt, however, particularly if Moyes reverts to a back five as he so often does.

And the West Ham manager has been reluctant to lavish praise on the winger all season, even finding ways to criticise him last night:

I thought Said did a lot of good things tonight, but I thought there were a couple of things which he didn’t do so well which I think people will see as well and we are looking for consistency from him.

He got himself a couple of chances to score and made his chances, but I am hoping we have got [more of] them coming.

While Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) for once took a backseat – his late on-target effort was his only shot of the game – West Ham’s full-backs were again heavily involved.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.6m) returned from injury and created another five chances to add to his impressive season total, while Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) contributed yet another assist for Antonio’s first strike.

It’s four assists in five matches for Coufal and he is now only two behind Cresswell for the season, with the pair responsible for a remarkable 32.7% of the goals West Ham have scored in 2020/21.

Not that the Hammers’ backline is in particularly good shape from a defensive perspective, as their seven-match clean sheet drought is the joint-longest in the Premier League.

Burnley’s back four has been all at sea for some time now, too, with just one shut-out arriving in their last nine fixtures. Only relegated Sheffield United have conceded more goals and big chances in that time.

The Clarets have been more expansive at the other end of the pitch, however, and Chris Wood (£6.4m) has been profiting as a result.

His early penalty against West Ham was his tenth attacking return in seven appearances.

With a Fulham side who need a win and nothing else up next for Wood and Burnley, there is every chance that Gameweek 35’s trip to Craven Cottage could provide the space he needs to extend his purple patch of form.

West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m) | Fabio Silva (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Conor Townsend (£4.4m) | Nelson Semedo (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Semedo x3, Diagne, Silva, Sam Johnstone (£4.6m) x2

Wolverhampton Wanderers produced an improved attacking display in the Black Country derby which nevertheless failed to mask ongoing shortcomings.

This fixture brought to an end a four-match run in which they’ve only faced teams in the bottom five of the Premier League table but they have scored on just three occasions over that period, with even their goal against the Baggies – a looping Fabio Silva (£5.2m) ricochet – owing much to good luck.

Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) did rack up an impressive nine saves for the second successive week but the fact that the visitors’ 20 shots all amounted to less than one expected goal (0.98) summed up proceedings.

With Willy Boly (£5.4m) suffering from the effects of ‘long COVID’ and unavailable, Nuno Espirito Santo’s switch to a back four allowed his full-backs to get forward.

Nelson Semedo (£5.3m) grabbed the assist for Silva’s fortuitous effort and the right-back had as many penalty box touches as anyone else on show, also forcing Johnstone into his best stop of the match.

Not that many FPL managers will be much interested in the Wolves backline beyond this week, with the lack of a ‘double’ in Gameweek 35 and some iffy fixtures beyond that killing whatever appeal they may have had.

The fact that they have only kept one clean sheet in 2020/21 when using a back four, plus another unconvincing defensive display at the Hawthorns, will encourage owners of Harry Kane (£11.9m) and co ahead of Gameweek 36.

As for the Baggies, they are all but down but at least going out with something of a bang.

The pressing need for wins has seen them rack up as many goals (11) as any other Premier League team over the last five Gameweeks – but they have also conceded the highest number of shots on target (38) over the same timeframe.

While a subdued Matheus Pereira (£5.5m) couldn’t continue his rich vein of form, forward Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m) did make it five attacking returns in as many matches for the Albion.

And if the Baggies continue to open up in a tricky-looking run-in (they could admittedly be relegated this weekend), then Johnstone will at least likely finish the season where is he is now, as FPL’s leading save-maker.

He will also very probably be among the save points should West Brom get a Double Gameweek 35, with the clash with Liverpool potentially being brought forward.

What can I do here ? Need some differential moves to try to push for a decent rank last weeks of the season. 0.1 itb and team is as follows. Will obviosly be very smooth if pool gets a double.

    Mendy*
    TAA Shaw* Digne*
    Jota Son Lingard Salah
    Vardy* Nacho* Kane

    Forster* ESR* Konsa* Holding*

    A. Kane and Lingard > Watkins and Bruno -4
    B. Lingard and Konsa > Greenwood and 4.2 def -4
    C. Lingard>JWP
    D. Kane>DCL
    E. Save ft

What is the plan for BGW36? Mendy and Forster won't play in 36. Watkins and Greenwood instead of Bruno looks decent for differential moves. JWP does like a DGW though

Dont think I will bother with a goalie transfer this late in the season. With united possibly not blanking in gw 36 I like the watkins and bruno move, as you say greenwood over bruno could work

Looking for suggestions with my 2nd FT. 1st FT will be Pereira to Jota. Not enough itb to do Lingard to Greenwood.

Plan to FH36 so would like to use 2nd FT

    2FT 1.7ITB FH36
    Mendy

Even if Pereira get a double, it'll be against Arsenal and Liverpool. Will he get anything in those games? I'm keeping Rudiger. Great value and Chelsea have shown they can keep CS against top teams

i dont rate the arsenal or liverpool def that highly, with Jota there is no gaureentee he starts both where with Pereira you have a nailed guy on all set pieces including pens

I agree, chels def is great, but you have Mendy and you have a FT to burn, there is more upside in attacking returns with Castagne and Digne

Arsenal surprisingly kept a CS against Newcastle with Ryan in goals instead of Leno. I expected Newcastle to score based on recent games and had ASM, Almiron and Wilson starting but didn't score.

If Liverpool gets the double against WBA and SOU, I expect Klopp to start all 4 up front in those two games. In the tougher games, Klopp will revert back to his usual front 3 of Salah, Mane and Firminho.

Certainly food for thought to get Castagne or Digne. My concern with Castagne is that he could easily revert back to LWB where has been ineffective compared to RWB. Unfortunately I've been put off with Digne after holding him for 10GWs earlier on in the season and was rubbish.

Which pair is it better to have:

    A) Veltman + Jota (keeps me with a full squad for GW 36 and possible DGW for Jota)

    B) Philips + Greenwood (DGW for Greenwood, and possible for Philips, but would have to take a -4 to have a full squad for GW 36)

    Cheers.

Who would people sell for Bruno? Salah, Son, Greenwood, Jota and Lingard. The cheapies would obviously require multiple hits to sort out. Do I just go without him?

Because he has not earned decent points for many weeks. Personally I'd keep him at least for this double week but then offload him if necessary. I am leading my mini league and the guy chasing me has him, so for me it makes sense to keep him so any differentials are narrowed.

Leeds have played City, Pool, Utd & Chelsea in the last 6 games and those 4 teams only put 3 goals past them, 2 clean sheets.

Don’t think it’s such an easy game for Spurs tbh and can see it being a 0-0

Leeds recently have stopped being so open (K.Philips is a must though)

Selling Son provides me with funds to bring in 2 double gw players who also play in 36. Digne / Watkins for example. So despite Son might have a good fixture its only 1 fixture, in return I get 4 games for Son's 1 game, plus my team will then have a full squad in 36.

It's not that Son's a bad option, but this is the game, I'm looking at it purely from full squad value. Even if Son gets another 12pter, I think Digne + Watkins can match that, and also both have great fixtures in 36 whereas Wolves isn't great, so over the next 2 it should make enough differece. I'd love to keep son but there's so much more value for money and I the rest of my premiums are undroppable, Bruno, Kane, Salah, Trent, even Jota now looks a better option because of potentially a v.tasty double 35.

Play Jota over Lingard and you've got 9 DGWers (if Liv get one that is).

Problem is Holding, Phillips are crap picks (I should know, I have both).

Anyway, reckon there's more upside in 36 and you can choose to ignore the possible Liverpool United fixture and hope for a low scoring draw.

The key question for people with FH left SHOULD BE whether to play it this week or whether it's worth just playing next week or even in GW38.
But I get the feeling that many of those people have already pressed the button on it and are now committed to FH this week.

I'm not sure exactly why I waited to press the button, but now that there's a possibility of Pool & WBA having a double (and no blank for Pool the next week if they play Utd then) it means my team is in good shape for GW35 & 36 already.

Not sure what to do now to be honest. Could take a few punts in GW35 outside of the guys I already own and want like Salah/Bruno/Shaw etc...

This game just keeps slapping us down every time you think you've cracked it!

I think FH36 is still the play for me. I can go without Liverpool and Utd players and target players from Villa, EVE, Spurs, WHU and City

Yeah it's a kick in the teeth. Biggest grumble is that I was *so close* to playing it in 34 with Havertz, Bale, B Mendy, James, E Mendy... (admittedly Jesus, Alonso and Sterling too) as I saw it as a high-upside week. Didn't follow through on gut feeling.

In two minds for 35 and 36 now. I could get a nice team out in 35 without playing it, but I'd rather have Vardy and Trent over Kane and Phillips for example.

I already hit go on it before MUNLIV canx.
Trying to focus on the benefit of being able to pick the best XI for one week only, but the impact of it is definately blunted by the (likely) addition of MUNLIV to DGW35.

Depends on your team - with FH this week I can assure 11 playing DGWers and a dgw playing bench just in case, in 36 I'd just have to transfer out Mendy and James for a -4 to play a full team with 1 on the bench, more upside doing it this week. If anything the Liverpool double is a good thing as it gives a big hitter with 2 good games to cap.

Going to play BB in 35. Current team with 2 FT and 0m in bank. Single gw players marked with *

    Martinez Forster
    TAA Shaw Ward Holding Coufal*
    Salah Bruno Sigurdsson Lingard* Son*
    Nacho Kane* Vydra*

Thinking Vydra and Son to Jota/Zaha and Watkins.

    Thoughts?

Feels a bit crap holding the FH all this time for GW35, only for Liverpool to get a lovely double at the last minute rendering the chip pretty futile against non-Free Hitters who'll be able to get 9-10 DGWers themselves now.

FH36 probably a better option loading on Aguero, Sterling, Benjamin Mendy, Digne, DCL, Siggy, Bale, Grealish?

FH36 is the play here for you. You can go without Liverpool and Utd players for 1GW

He will come in my FH36 team. Not sure on captaincy yet

Think most will still captain Kane vs Wolves.

Kane to Kun from 36 is on my radar. Not sure on captaincy. More for the nostaligia.

I will have both and Antonio for some final run in fun.

Kane Antonio Kun should be the strikeforce imo.

Selling Bruno though to make it happen.

My fingers on Son are also itchy

Wolves have looked awful for a while though.

My 5-team mini-league doesn't allow duplicate players (still 100m budget though). Being ahead of the curve matters.

    Current outfield players:
    Lowton/Christensen/Cancelo/Cresswell/Reguilon
    Zaha/Mane/JWP/Son/Havertz
    Wood/Richarlison/Adams

    Worth hit to do either:
    a) Cancelo -> Coleman
    b) Adams -> Antonio

    Thanks,

    A) Raph to JWP
    B) Son + Brewster to DCL + Zaha/JWP (-4)

    Areola
    TAA Digne Dallas Coufal
    Salah Bruno Jota Son
    Kane Nacho

    Meslier Lowton Brewster Raph

A if you are leading, but B if you are chasing and need to take a risk.

Which pair is it better to have:

    A) Veltman + Jota

    B) Philips + Greenwood

    C) Philips + JWP

    D) Philips + DCL

    Cheers.

Hi lads, the team is as below and my question is whether to do a mega-hit and do a BB now or do a BB in GW 37 and prepare my team gradually.

    Martinez (Fabri)
    Shaw TAA Rudiger
    Son Bruno Jota Salah Lingard
    Kane Nacho
    bench: Davis, Cancelo, Veltman

    0.2m itb

The thing is that I will probably need at least -12pt hit to make the BB now, which I am not sure is worth it.

    Thanks,

A -12 will almost certainly wipe out most of your BB score unless you get lucky with your picks.

I'd wait and do it for free or perhaps a -4.

Yeah but in a double there is more chance for the hit to pay off

    Watkins or DCL?

I watched Watkins for the first time this year and he impressed me. I vote for him. DCL is kind of slow for my liking. Both would be ideal

So Man.Utd and Leicester City could end up with SGW

Within the United fanbase "planning for more demonstrations is already under way".

It is noted that United's next home game against Leicester City on May 12 and the replay of the Liverpool match are potential targets for such action. A date for the rearranged fixture with Jurgen Klopp's side is yet to be determined.

Gamble with no Man.Utd and Leicester City could be huge but very risky

Could be a huge differential to the end of some MLs.
But also feels like it's very much not in the spirit of the game.

So sad to see the impact that greed is having on the game.
        Long time coming.

Passed carting tbh. The postponed game has properly screwed my season with 4 players points being lost (1 on the bench). Not self pity or sour grapes and I know many others are in the same boat....is what it is I guess. But my ML chase is gone now

Yeah mine ended in the big blank week when a Friday deadline caught me out and didn’t engage free hit.

If I were the ManU brass, I'd play at Wembley and not tell anyone.

With no crowds, games can pretty much be played anywhere so I wouldn't be surprised if they move to a neutral venue if there are security concerns.
