Wood on target again as Burnley’s bargain brigade continue their charge

Fulham 0-2 Burnley

  • Goals: Ashley Westwood (£5.3m), Chris Wood (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Matej Vydra (£4.8m), Josh Brownhill (£4.9m)
  • Bonus: James Tarkowski (£5.3m) x3, Westwood, Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) x2

The curtain finally fell on Fulham’s return to the Premier League as perennial survivors Burnley ran out 2-0 victors at Craven Cottage with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) differential striker Chris Wood (£6.4m) delivering the coup de grâce just before half-time.

LEADS LIKE LEEDS

The Clarets were already a goal to the good thanks to an opener from Ashley Westwood (£5.3m) delivered in a style favoured by their weekend visitors, Leeds United.

Matt Lowton (£4.4m) launched a long diagonal out of defence for Matej Vydra (£4.8m) to chase down on the left and the Czech striker made space deftly before cutting the ball back to Westwood driving into the box to sweep it home.

Diego Llorente (£4.4m), Jack Harrison (£5.4m) and Stuart Dallas (£5.2m) would have recognised the blueprint.

The clinching goal, from former Leeds striker Wood, was lanced into the top corner on the volley after his initial touch had been deflected out of his path only for Josh Brownhill (£4.9m) to return it neatly into his stride.

Co-commentator Don Goodman echoed what many FPL managers will have been thinking and noticed over recent weeks:

You just know that Chris Wood, at the least, is going to hit the target here. At the very least.

Don Goodman on Sky Sports

NOT CAUGHT RED-HANDED

The 4.6% of managers with Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) in their squads could scarcely have believed their luck as the Fulham goalkeeper survived a dreaded VAR review for what looked like a clear case of handling outside his area in the second half as he came out to challenge Vydra heading the ball beyond him.

Officials deemed that a covering defender prevented the chance from being a clear goal scoring opportunity and the red card stayed in the referee’s pocket.

DON’T LOOK BACK ANGUISSA

On the night, Fulham’s need to cling to a slim chance of avoiding relegation drove them to 21 attempts on goal, seven more than Burnley, but the closest they came to a consolation was an 18-yarder from André-Frank Zambo Anguissa (£4.4m) that thumped down off the crossbar late on and bounced away to preserve the clean sheet of the game’s most popular FPL asset, Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope (£5.5m).

Anguissa’s five attempts on the night matched Wood while fellow midfielder Ademola Lookman (£4.8m) managed four as did early season FPL favourite Aleksandar Mitrović (£5.5m) whose quartet of efforts inside the box came to nothing.

No Burnley player besides Wood managed more than two shots on goal. Mitrović summed up the season for his club:

Overall we have finished where we deserve to be. We did not show the big character, big mentality and we cracked under the pressure. We tried, we fought, we worked hard but we needed more quality on the ball. We got punished today and this season.

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrović

Chance creation was more even with Fulham mustering 15 to Burnley’s 11. Most of Fulham’s openings were created by Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m) who managed six or Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) with three while the visitors shared the work across almost the entire side and fashioned the only three big chances of the encounter.

BIG CHANCE BONUSES

One of those was credited to James Tarkowski (£5.3m) and that helped him clear of his defensive colleagues to claim all three bonus points with Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) claiming two with a big chance created of his own.

First goal scorer Westwood joined him on two with Pope edged out by one BPS and Chris Wood some way back despite his impressive strike.

With their fate now finally decided, Fulham’s attacking assets may yet relax and take some of their crop of chances against the unimpressive defences of Southampton and Newcastle United in their remaining games.

Wood continues to look as if he could score against anyone and everyone. Leeds and Liverpool are the final visitors to Turf Moor this campaign and both are tidy at the back but capable of lapses.

Burnley’s own defence is also looking somewhat returned to its usual reliable form, but we believe it will be the exploits of Wood that lead to ever-heavier investment from FPL managers as Burnley’s final-day visit to Sheffield United approaches.

What do we think the Utd team will be tonight?

I reckon Bruno will start but not finish, with Cavani up top and Rashford benched. Beyond that no idea.

I think the only unchanged spots will be Henderon, AWB, Lindelof, Greenwood, and Bruno.

Pretty much as FFS has it is my guess

It'll a giant FU to the PL for the scheduling. Full team to play Liverpool relatively fresh.

The full XI would be pretty ballsy.
Does Henderson really need a rest?
Surey Mason and AWB are fit enough to handle this schedule? At least to start the game and play 45-60 mins.
        Same for Bruno.

Really hope Ole doesn't put out a full reserve side (well 10 plus Cavani).

At least in attack there are options with Cavani Greenwood Pogba Rashford - not quite sure what the A line up is there really.

I can see AWB and even Bruno perhaps getting 45 minutes but they must be getting very near the red zone in fitness terms. I'm no sports scientist but it's this sort of schedule that leads to muscle injuries no. They both have a pretty significant work rate anyway in getting up and down the pitch.

Who starts as striker against Liverpool then? Rashford? Then who plays RW assuming Pogba starts left? Cavani won't start 2 games in a few days and I doubt Greenwood starts 4 games within a week.

Cavani could easily play 60 mins in both matches.
And Greenwood looks fit enough to handle this schedule, but maybe he's benched against Pool and then comes on for the last 30?

Ole has been very careful with Cavani's minutes all season, apparently due to the recommendation from the player himself at times.

Cavani 60 mins tonight and then starts again for another 60 on Thursday.

My early thoughts last week were to do Iheanacho to Antonio for free this week.

Something else worth -4? Masuaku to Alioski?

Forster and Masuaku mean I may only have 9 players...

Getting Watkins instead of DCL (and spending the money elsewhere) proved to be a real downer on an otherwise decent week. And it looks difficult to bring in DCL now...

    1FT 0.6 ITB
    Forster*
    TAA Digne Coady Masuaku*
    Salah Jota Lingard
    Kane Watkins

Non-playing players: Iheanacho, Bruno, Greenwood, Holding, Mendy.

    Thanks!

Thanks. Yes, considering ditching one of the United guys. Chasing, ML rival has Bruno but not sure if I want to sell him.

PS Greenwood to Foden/Gundogan to fund Iheanacho to DCL for -4?

I'm chasing, cut the lead from 25 to 11 to far this gameweek.

      It's 0.5ITB, by the way, not 0.6ITB.

Is this WC draft all good, I don't really have any differentials I don't think which I could do with. Plan was to get Wilson in

    Martinez (Forster)
Digne / Dallas / TAA (Coufal / AWB)
Bale / Salah / Lingard / Raphinha (Greenwood)
    DCL / Kane / Bamford

I could upgrade Bale to Son, also aware I haven't got Antonio or Wood - I'm underwhelmed with it tbh!

    1. Neo-Viper

      Could you downgrade Martinez?

McCarthy/Forster saves you many, gives you two good and one ok fixture.

Could allow you to do Bamford to Antonio then.

Don't like Martinez. Think I'd get Pickford instead as the surer cs in 36 and roughly equal there on in.

It does look unexciting. Bale will be differential still. Doubt Lingard. Losing him is your entry to Wood or Antonio perhaps.

Pereira is still banging in the returns and is just about the most in form mid in the game. I'm not seeing any particular reason why he's going to stop just because WBA are officially down. They were effectively down last match but he still scored against Arsenal.

Oh man, I'll be so sad to see Martinez leave my team - had him all season! Pickford good shout though

      Martinez is a no
Invested too much in defense. It's only 3 GWs. Get two premiums. Two mid priced. And one cheapie.
      Get Son and Antonio.

I meant in defense. You can even go without Bruno. But I would definitely suggest Son, Kane, Salah, Antonio, DCL, TAA, Dallas. Bale is a great punt playing 2 at home.

      - not Emi - Meslier/Pick cheaper and probably better. If you want to go different why not Robbo for Digne and Pickford in goal?
      - Lingard/Bam > Antonio/?
      - switch dcl to Wood for 38 (mci vs shu)
      - not sure any differentials really stand out tbh, maybe grealish IF he plays meaningful minutes on Thursday? Foden/Mahrez with strong bench? Ederson in goal? Chelsea mid?

    thoughts for the end of the season;

    Pickford
    TAA, Robbo, Castagne
    Salah, Bruno, Maddison, Greenwood, Son
    Wood, DCL
    (Forster, Nacho, Diop, Mitchell)

    a) Nacho/Maddison > Antonio/Raphinha
    b) Nacho/Castagne > Antonio/Dallas
    c) Nacho/Bruno > Kane/Raphinha

20ish pts off top of ML and everyne has Kane so worth the risk to go without for run-in? Like Bruno for Fulham but Kane also has Wol/AVL

Think I'd back Everton over City for the cs - Newcastle scoring wouldn't be the surprise to would have been a few weeks back.

Alternative for 3rd Everton would be Siggy over Bamford, Burnley have been very soldi defensively at home - it's away where they have leaked goals.

      Like it a lot overall.

I fancy having a punt on Mahrez this week and until end of season really.
Any thoughts or stats regarding his involvement for the rest of the season with Pep Roulette?

I think Pep plays his best team imo.
Don't want his best players to lose match fitness but what do I know.

    #MUFC starting lineup vs Leicester:

De Gea, Williams, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Telles, Matic, van de Beek, Mata, Amad, Greenwood, Elanga

Think if plays tonight McCarthy will play at weekend which is what Hassenhutl initially said would be the case. I have Forster and Leno so will be moving one out for Meslier I think

No idea. But I think he will play one of the next two. So if he plays today then no for the week after and vice versa.

    Repost

FH draft - G2G? Or too much on the bench?

    Pickford
    TAA Digne Stones
Salah (c) Jota Son Mahrez Foden
    Kane DCL
    - Antonio Dallas Mitchell

    1. Boly Would
      • 7 Years

Potentially a few risks in Jota, Mahrez and Foden so
I'd want a strong bench with those.
      And would start Antonio.

As above - I'd start Antonio over Jota - but think you have enough bench cover to allow Mahrez/Foden.
      Could be huge.

Jota is 1.6 to score, 2nd least odds for the GW after Salah, and Liverpool are expected to score the most goals for the GW too

Depends how much you trust this source. It looks possible but let's see.

I'm really hoping Bruno + Greenwood start. Shaw was more of a hope but 2 games should be just fine.

Bruno will probably play 45-30 in second half

Pretty much as predicted elsewhere. FPL wise I'm not sure if Greenwood starting would be positive or not, because it's extremely unlikely he would also start against Pool, when the rest of the first team would in action to provide the chances and finish his assists.

    4. Eh, just one more thing ...

    B) Kane -4

In one hand Kane is running for golden boot, in an other hand you have Son going for his first season at 20+. I think both will get similar points in the last 3.
So go Son avoiding the hit

Golden boot is the laziest of lazy analysis

Son going for a first season of 20+ is nearly even more meaningless

        Both are utterly irrelevant

Don't think Solkjaer will change all the starting XI. He's facing Leicester not Sheffield, he will need at least 4-5 usual starters.

Anything worth a hit here? I got a non playing bench, 0 FT and 1.1 ITB

    Kane Watkins

    Forster Veltman Iheanacho Maguire

      0.1 off Watkins to DCL?

It'd be a luxury move and playing Palace at home is nice enough after all -but that's the only one I see as possible. DCL would be up there among my captain choices this week.

      But GtG really.

      1. SKENG
        • 8 Years

Exact money actually. It's just that I don't think it's worth a hit for this GW. I will switch both Nacho and Watkins for Antonio and Bam in the next 2 GWs, and will captain Salah anyway until the end of the season.

I was considering Maguire > Digne actually, as Dias might miss out and even if not Digne might pay back the hit vs Coufal.

        Thanks for the reply!
