Gameweek Guide

The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice for Blank Gameweek 36

Blank Gameweek 36 thrusts the likes of Leeds United and Manchester City into contention for our Fantasy Premier League teams, while Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.6m) is rivaling Harry Kane (£11.8m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) for the captain’s armband.

And Fantasy managers are wondering what to do with their Manchester United assets. Following their three matches in Gameweek 35, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men are one of four sides without a fixture in Gameweek 36 along with Arsenal and FA Cup finalists Chelsea and Leicester City.

There are only three rounds to go and after a Friday deadline of 18:30 BST, a heads up that Gameweek 37 kicks off on Tuesday afternoon.

Sensible Salah

Top of the captain poll and with attacking returns in each of his last five starts, Mohamed Salah would appear the sensible option for the captaincy. A motivated Liverpool side, chasing a top-four spot for a place in next season’s Champions League, face an already-relegated West Brom.

In addition, Salah has personal motivation as he tussles with Harry Kane for the Golden Boot, the pair currently tied on 21 goals apiece.

Salah and Kane, unsurprisingly, claim the top two spots in Jan’s Captain Sensible article and with our four Scout Picks selectors. Of that quintet, only Neale has opted for Kane ahead of Salah.

There is, however, some difference of opinion over who might be the best alternative captain for those looking to take a risk and claw back lost ground in the rankings.

Both Jan and Neale favour a Man City player, with Riyad Mahrez (£8.0m) and Phil Foden (£6.0m) their preferred options in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, while David, Tom and Andy all back Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Although David questioned the explosive potential of Calvert-Lewin on this week’s Captaincy Video with Joe, pointing out that only three times this season has the Everton striker produced more than one attacking return – a key consideration for our armband holders.

While Andy, despite picking Calvert-Lewin in third, promoted the credentials of Foden and Mahrez:

Both [Foden and Mahrez] look like great explosive options but Mahrez would be ahead for me, given that he averages 5.4 points per match this season and has great underlying numbers.

Mahrez has more than double the expected goal involvement of Foden over their last six matches (2.72 vs 1.34) and could be on penalty duties.

When backing the Algerian as his top differential captain, Jan pointed to a weakness in the Newcastle defence that could bode well for his attacking prospects:

Another reason why a Mahrez captaincy could turn out to be successful is Newcastle’s inability to defend the left side of the pitch. Three of their last five goals conceded came from the area Mahrez usually excels in.

Time to let Iheanach-go?

A blank followed by a trip to Chelsea and the final day visit of Tottenham Hotspur is leading many to consider selling the in-form Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.3m). The Foxes forward has scored or assisted in eight of the past nine Gameweeks, albeit against generally easier opposition.

Looking to cement her position in the top 50k, Sam has made her mind up:

Selling… Kelechi Iheanacho is a more painful decision. The Nigerian international has been the height of consistency so far, returning in his last five Premier League matches. However, Blank Gameweek 36, followed by the league’s best defence in Chelsea in Gameweek 37 means he has to make way.

The Spurs fan plans to bring in Calvert-Lewin as her replacement, but for fellow Pro Pundit Andy, Everton’s matches after their enticing home encounter with Sheffield United mean he is looking elsewhere. The Toffees face Wolves and Man City to close the season.

Similarly priced to Iheanacho, Patrick Bamford (£6.4m) and Michail Antonio (£6.5m) were the two candidates he considered. But with both Leeds and West Ham playing Southampton and West Brom in Gameweeks 37 and 38, Andy feels that Bamford has the better fixture in this round. West Ham’s opponents Brighton have been defensively sound and are unlikely to be pushovers despite the loss of Lewis Dunk to suspension.

But fixtures aren’t the only reason behind Andy’s decision:

Antonio’s injury record, which may mean another transfer before the season’s end, and Bamford being on penalties.

Thank you for the good times

It may seem a little harsh to discard Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) after the most-popular player in FPL rewarded his owners with 19 points across his three appearances in Gameweek 35, but there’s no room for sentiment at this stage of the campaign.

I think it is perfectly fine to ditch your Manchester United players now.

– Lateriser

Man United fans Lateriser and Andy agreed that there could be an advantage to be gained by selling.

Bruno Fernandes to Son Heung-min gives you pretty much three starts over the next three Gameweeks; Fernandes may only get one.

– Andy

As Lateriser pointed out, Manchester United play their Gameweek 38 fixture three days prior to the Europa League final, which could mean rests or at least limited minutes for their main protagonists.

A switch to Son Heung-min (£9.6m) could prove profitable. The South Korean has a goal in each of his last three matches and is included in the Scout Picks:

We fancy him to continue that run against Wolves given the weaknesses they have shown on their right-hand side of late. During the last six matches, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have conceded 11 chances on their left, 14 through the middle and 21 down the right.

– Scout Picks

Flying Fullbacks

Blank Gameweek 36 Scout Picks features double-ups from four clubs

A trio of full-backs have been highlighted by our experts ahead of the deadline.

Seamus Coleman (£4.9m) headlines Tom’s differential picks, with the Pro Pundit revealing how a recent formation change to 3-5-2 has given the Irishman license to get forward.

Over the last six Gameweeks Coleman’s 11 chances created is level with that of his colleague on the opposite flank, Lucas Digne (£6.2m), who impressed David against Aston Villa:

[Digne] laid on three key passes at Villa Park, more than any other player.

And Duncan Young (aka Statto99) believes there’s only one option to consider among Leeds United’s backline

Even at his current price, [Stuart Dallas] represents great value with a points-per-match average (4.5) better than any defender not playing for a Champions League finalist.

Enjoy the run-in

Seb looked for the positives from a disappointing campaign as he shared his thoughts on how to play the final Gameweeks for those in a similar position:

Experiment with transfers, selections or captains you may not usually go for. See what works, what does not and what could be added to your repertoire for next time.

While for Sam, a rare points hit is on the cards:

One thing is certain, fielding 11 players for me will be the right thing, even if that means taking only my second -4 of the season.

Community Competitions and Head-to-Head Fixtures

RedLightning has brought us his regular community competitions update and revealed the FFS cup winners:

The FFS Open Cup winner is Genovoze, who scored 133 without the aid of a chip and defeated Mince n Tatties by a single point after the latter scored a Bench Boosted 136(-4).

The third-place play-off was won by Jambo17 (aka Callum Croal), who won 112-106 against FPL Bielsa.

The FFS Members Cup winner is Mohd Rodzi, who beat EUG 132-121.

The third-place play-off was won by Rossaldinho, whose 122 points proved sufficient to defeat SUNFLOWER. The latter’s wildcard only returned a disappointing 100 points – normally an excellent Gameweek score, but not this time!

TopMarx Fan of Fantasy Football and Monty Python. "Archimedes out to Socrates, Socrates back to Archimedes, Archimedes out to Heraclitus, he beats Hegel. Heraclitus a little flick, here he comes on the far post, Socrates is there, Socrates heads it in! Socrates has scored! The Greeks are going mad, the Greeks are going mad! Socrates scores, got a beautiful cross from Archimedes. The Germans are disputing it. Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination, and Marx is claiming it was offside.”

I'm sure I'll get a slice OG humble pie later, but surely Lateriser hasn't gone for Carson as his GK, with only Peacok-Farrell as the backup, on a FH (like below says Fabri but was updated. Guess as Pope a risk.)

      https://twitter.com/lateriser12/status/1393255907400638465?s=19

Newcastle attack hasn't even been that bad, and by reports its not even the 1st City team.

Could certainly keep a CS but that reeks of an unnecessary risk. At least get a more secure backup!

At the time he heard it, it wasn't from the standard, definite, 100% always tight sources.

Was still a but in the air.

My point rests though. No Stones or Dias. Lots of first XI players out.

Sure but Peacock was enough to cover even if the information was wrong.

Apparently the decision allowed him to upgrade Mahrez to Bale so it was correct.

I'd say pretty likely Peacok-Farrell starts, Burnley have no reason to need to risk Pope. Decent punt

Better options with more favourable fixtures remaining. Utd will be focusing on UEFA cup with the league all but done; Maguire out also a factor on clean sheet potential. You'd be relying on assists for any real returns.

They don't have anything to play for. But the CL final is two weeks away. He can't just let his best team sit on the bench for two weeks.

The team haven't played for a week. Surely better to put the best team out today and next week (vs Everton) to keep them ticking over and rotate vs Brighton.

Welcome to the Fantasy Football Scout mini-leagues and community competitions round-up after a high-scoring Triple Gameweek 35, the first one since 2005/06.

We report on the two main FFScout Leagues, the Head-to-Head Leagues, the FFS Cups, Last Man Standing and a selection of community mini-leagues.

      FFSCOUT OPEN FPL LEAGUE

Pandin Bruyne is still top of our Fantasy Football Scout mini-league (league code 5u05vz). He has a 35 point lead over Ray Freeman and is back up to second in the world, only two points behind Ola Hovde.

49,394 teams are currently participating in this mini-league, with at least four more waiting to be added at the next update.

Fantasy Football Scout is still the second Best League in FPL based on the average scores of the top five managers in each league (former Pro Pundit Ash's @FPLHINTS (No Room for Racism) is the best and Pro Pundit Andy LTFPL’s youtube.com/letstalkfpl is third).
Our current top five are Pandin Bruyne, Ray Freeman, Robert Tuck (COVID-CASUAL), Vegard Knutsen and Drew Jones, who all scored at least 125 this week without playing any chips and are all in the top 73 overall.

Chris Galloway is up to 45th in the league after playing his Bench Boost for 173(-4) points and a Gameweek Rank of 666th. His bench was Forster 10, Smith Rowe 19, Holding 9 and Phillips 10.
David Douglas (Kroos Control) went one better and is up to 48th after his Bench Boost returned 174(-4) for a Gameweek Rank of 573rd, although his bench of Forster, Son, Dias and Vydra only contributed 23 of these points.

      FFSCOUT COMMUNITY MEMBERS LEAGUE

Robert Tuck (COVID-CASUAL) is the new leader of our Fantasy Football Scout Community Members mini-league, 14 points ahead of Drew Jones and 15 ahead of last week’s leader Nathan Jobling.
Robert is now 31st in the world and in his 11th season, his previous best finish being 45,017th in 2007/08. As he remarks in his profile, he has been taking FPL far more seriously since COVID.
This mini-league is open to anyone with a registered Fantasy Football Scout account, paid or free (the code is shown on the Members home page and in the Scout Leagues widget when signed in).
Ciaran McCullogh is up to 40th in the league after playing his Bench Boost for 175(-4) points and a Gameweek Rank of 473rd. His bench was Forster 10, Smith Rowe 19, Holding 9 and Ward 6.

      HEAD-TO-HEAD LEAGUES

Aleksander Våge Nilsen (AleksanderVN) has regained the lead in League 1 and is now three points ahead of Ville Tuominen (aka Santigold) after he beat Craig Johnson (Bouncebackability) while Ville was losing to Ian Knox.

Mikael Brantingson was held to a 128-128 draw by Ómar Olgeirsson in League 9 Division 75 but is still the highest-scoring manager in our head-to-head leagues, with 88 points out of a possible 105.

The scores and points totals as they stand for the current Gameweek are updated every night in the tables on our main Head-to-Head page, and a fixtures table for the following Gameweek can be found in The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice.

      FFS CUPS

Both the finals of our FFS Cups took place in Gameweek 35.

The FFS Open Cup winner is Genovoze, who scored 133 without the aid of a chip and defeated Mince n Tatties by a single point after the latter scored a Bench Boosted 136(-4).
The third-place play-off was won by Jambo17 (Callum Croal), who won 112-106 against FPL Bielsa.

The FFS Members Cup winner is Mohd Rodzi, who beat EUG 132-121.
The third-place play-off was won by Rossaldinho, whose 122 points proved sufficient to defeat SUNFLOWER. The latter’s wildcard only returned 100 points – normally an excellent score, but not this time!

      LAST MAN STANDING

The safety score for Gameweek 35 in TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing competition was 123; eight managers were removed and seven go through to the LMS semi-final in Gameweek 36, after which the top four will contest the final in Gameweek 37.
The highest scorer was Amit Sharma with 146(-8). This is Amit’s fifth season, finishing 12,811th in 2019/20. He is currently 45k overall.
Other LMS semi-finalists include Ray Freeman and Robert Tuck (COVID-CASUAL) (second and third in our Fantasy Football Scout mini-league) and Jamie McComb (FFS Open Cup losing finalist Mince n Tatties).

      ‘TOP’ MINI-LEAGUES

Ray Freeman still leads Chaballer’s Hall of Fame >Top 1k< mini-league (league code: mr8dyh) and has extended his lead over Paul Strange to 37 points.
Ray is 113th in our Live Hall of Fame and Paul 74th following its recent update.

Ray is also still top of PDM’s Top 1k ANY season mini-league (league code: 2agvvx), increasing his lead over Jan Kępski to 42 points.

Vegard Knutsen still rules the roost in my Top 10k Any Season mini-league (league code: 8kcvzq). He is now 53rd overall and has increased his lead over Paul Strange to 21 points

Jack Penn (ZoumasBloomers) is the new leader of my Multiple Top 10k Finishes mini-league (league code: 8t42p6), nine points ahead of John Forshaw and last week’s leader Phil Olorenshaw.

Killingholme Clay has extended his lead over Richard Scoular to 35 points in the Top 100 Any Season mini-league (league code: xptbn4) after playing his Bench Boost and has now risen to 2,742nd overall.

Meanwhile, 2009/10 Champion Jon Reeson (Westfield Irons) has regained the lead in Simon March’s FPL Champions League and has reached a season-high 38,318th overall, 12 points ahead of last week’s leader, reigning FPL champion Joshua Bull.

      PROS AND CONS

Fábio Borges is still the highest ranked of our Pro Pundits, 21 points ahead of Andy LTFPL and is now 1,030th overall, just outside the top thousand.
The highest Pro Pundit score was Seb Wassell’s 141 from his Free Hit, one point more than Tom Freeman who also played his Free Hit.

Jack Penn is still top of the FFS Mods & Cons mini-league, 16 points ahead of Pro Pundit Andy LTFPL.

Babis Kokkinis of FPL Greece scored a Bench Boosted 146(-8) in the Fantasy Football Scout Network mini-league (which is for the Scout Network and includes six of our Pro Pundits) and has now risen to 2,686th overall, increasing his lead over FFS Commercial Director Chris James (El Fozzie) to 24 points.

      BEST OF THE REST

Les Caldwell (Shuddahaddum) still leads Greyhead’s The Next Great and The Good mini-league and has now entered the overall top thousand in 837th position, 17 points ahead of John Pritchard.

Anoop K (RobinHuth) is the new leader in Skooldaze’s FPL Vets 2006 or before mini-league and is now 3,932nd overall after playing his Bench Boost, 17 points ahead of last week’s leader Andy Short. Anoop has had three top 10k finishes, the best of which was 1,729th in 2006/07.

Ray Freeman still tops my January to May League (league code h62bh1), 14 points ahead of Charles Ball (Chaballer). He has risen from 10,941st overall at the beginning of Gameweek 17 when the league started scoring to his current rank of 20th.

And finally, Andy Mayhew and Robert Tuck (COVID-CASUAL) are the new joint leaders of The Last Ten (league code w4430n), with 527 points in seven Gameweeks, five points ahead of last week’s leader Tiago Ferreira.

Off topic and about COVID. But can someone kindly explain why didn’t completely shut the borders and flights to stop the Indian variant getting to the UK in the first place?

I just don’t understand it, same goes for any other variant they knew about in the past year.

Totally agree - as an island it should be so simple. Look at New Zealand as an example of how to shut borders etc.

Is because of the economy? There must be a reason, just seems like the simplest control to stop it or at least severely limit the spread to here at least.

Closing the borders actually leads to an increase in people repatriating to the country. We saw that in the US when Trump shut down travel with China 40,000 people immediately came home, Many of whom were carriers
