Smith Rowe scores, Pepe misses pen and Bowen bags another pre-season assist

Pre-season matches continued on Tuesday and Wednesday, with West Ham United in action again and Arsenal taking on Hibernian in their first run-out.

We’ll be documenting every warm-up game result, every minute played (where line-ups are available), every goal, every assist and much more in our dedicated Pre-Season tab, which will be updated regularly ahead of Gameweek 1.

And we’ll have Scout Notes on every friendly, too, continuing with a mixed night for the Gunners and the Hammers.

Hibernian 2-1 Arsenal

  • Goal: Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m)
  • Assist: Hector Bellerin (£5.0m)
  • Penalty missed: Nicolas Pepe (£7.5m)

VIEW MATCH HIGHLIGHTS HERE

Substitute Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m) scored Arsenal’s only goal as the Gunners lost 2-1 to Hibs in their pre-season opener.

Most of Arsenal’s first-team players were handed 45 minutes as they eased into the beginning of the campaign.

Nicolas Pepe (£7.5m) won a second-half penalty but failed to convert from 12 yards, with Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) on the field but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.0m) having departed the action at half-time.

Rumoured Inter Milan target Hector Bellerin (£5.0m) assisted Smith Rowe’s goal, finding the midfielder at the back post with a deflected cross.

On the young midfielder’s performance, Mikel Arteta said:

“He knows that it (scoring) is a part of the game he needs to get better at. We are working on it a lot and you could see the positions that he took today. He created two or three big chances.

Arsenal conceded early on with a mix-up in defence involving 19-year-old goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, before conceding from a second-half corner.

“I’m always disappointed when we lose a football match but it is the first game, we played with many kids and we only had four training sessions.

“We’ve trained really hard and you could see that the players were a little bit leggy. I think we conceded the first goal, an accident, and the second goal was clearly offside.

“We created many, many chances but we didn’t score. That’s what pre-season is for, to take the things that we haven’t done well into a training session and then improve.” – Mikel Arteta

Asked if a lack of training so far explains the performance, Arteta added:

It does but there’s no excuse because we want to come here and win the match. They worked really hard, the boys worked really hard and you could see that some of them were not in the best condition, but we’re still very early in pre-season. It was great to see some of the young lads making their debuts here. We’ll keep working.

Arsenal XI: Okonkwo (Hein 46′); Kolasinac (Hutchinson 80′), Mari, Clarke (Rekik 46′), Soares (Bellerin 63′), Elneny (Henry-Francis 75′), Maitland-Niles (Partey 46′), Aubameyang (Lacazette 46′), Willian (Smith Rowe 46′), Nelson (Pepe 46′), Nketiah (Balogun 46′)

Leyton Orient 0-0 West Ham United

Fit-again Antonio bursts back onto the FPL scene in time for season run-in

VIEW MATCH HIGHLIGHTS HERE

Michail Antonio (£7.5m) played 90 minutes in the first of West Ham’s two simultaneous friendlies on Tuesday.

That followed a 45-minute showing in the Hammers’ first pre-season tie last Friday.

His only chance of the game came after 82 minutes: the striker got his head onto an Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) cross but the Leyton Orient goalkeeper was equal to the effort.

On splitting his squad across two games in one evening, David Moyes said:

I wanted to get the senior players 90 minutes on the pitch tonight, so we were pleased get that into their legs. There are a lot of players away just now and not back, so it’s not helping with the moment in putting strong teams out, and it was a hard game for us [at Orient].

Orient played well and we have to give them credit for the way they played, I must say. It was tough for us, but good for the other team who won 2-1 tonight at Northampton. The two results were okay for us.

[Most importantly] we wanted to give them 90 minutes, that’s why we split them and I’m pleased that we had the chance to do that.”

West Ham XI v Leyton Orient: Randolph, Cresswell, Baptiste, Ogbonna, Ashby (Potts 46′), Johnson, Noble, Ekwah, Oko-Flex (Diallo 75′), Antonio, Silva.

NORTHAMPTON 1-2 WEST HAM UNITED

Everton and West Ham in action as Premier League pre-season friendlies start
  • Goals: Sid Nelson own-goal, Conor Coventry
  • Assist: Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m), Manuel Lanzini (£6.0m)

VIEW MATCH HIGHLIGHTS HERE

Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) claimed his second assist of pre-season with a cross that Northampton defender Sid Nelson put into his own net after just a minute.

The winger saw his corner headed home in the Irons’ first pre-season outing, while also converting from the penalty spot.

And Manuel Lanzini (£6.0m) earned an assist against Northampton, with a pass in the 14th minute that Conor Coventry stuck in the bottom corner from inside the edge of the box.

There were plenty more 90-minute runouts for senior players, with assistant manager Stuart Pearce choosing to make only two substitutions.

Moyes’s post-match comments suggested that the likes of Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m) and Tomas Soucek (£6.0m) are “weeks away” from a return, following their exertions at the European Championship.

“We’ve got a long way to go and it’s difficult at the moment where we’ve only got half the squad but we’re trying to get everybody in the best condition we can. Most of them aren’t back for another two to three weeks yet but we’ll get some of them back and start to build them up in the coming weeks.

“But the likes of Declan (Rice), the Czech boys have a few weeks to go yet. They have holiday time and they deserve it for the way they played for us last year and they did really well at the Euros. So they have time off and we’ll factor that in as well.

“We’re training the players all the time and we’re working them hard, so we’re hoping to keep building on it and we want to get back to the levels we were at last year. We’ve got high standards to set and we’re looking forward to doing that.” – David Moyes

West Ham XI v Northampton: Trott, Fredericks, Dawson, Alves, Alese, Coventry, Forson (Rosa 77), Lanzini, Bowen, Holland, Odubeko (Swyer 85).

Watford 3-2 Millwall

Early pricing thoughts
  • Goals: Domingos Quina (£4.5m), Adam Masina (£4.5m), Ashley Fletcher (£5.0m)

Watford beat Millwall 3-2 in a behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

Domingos Quina (£4.5m) scored from a free-kick before Millwall went 2-1 up.

Adam Masina (£4.5m) restored parity before Ashley Fletcher (£5.0m) grabbed a winner.

No line-up information was revealed.

Surely Auba will keep penalties and start every game through the middle this season?
Last season was a bad one for him both professionally and in his personal life. He'd want to rectify that.

Arteta a bit like Pep and Tuchel. Auba must want to improve back to what he can arvhieve but I dont think he can get full gametime like JWP.

Just saying about the penalty taker. Unlikely he can be above Auba and Laca..

Boris Johnson has promised to ban people guilty of sending racist abuse to footballers from attending matches.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-57837003

This is a much better approach than taking the knee IMO. The knee is well intentioned but I can't see the logic in doing it. It brings racism into the public eye, which is effectively advertising it and as the well-known saying goes 'There is no such thing as bad advertising'. So it's likely to make the issue worse IMO as we have witnessed in recent days. Bans, fines and prison sentences are the approach I'd take to stamp out racism both in stadiums and online.

Agree, there are positives and negatives with taking the knee. But it probable did escalate tension rather than heal it. But I’m all for banning racist, violent and hateful fans.

Definitely not talking about racism has worked wonders for the last 100s of years. Better shut up about it again so it goes away.

All paths lead to platforms like twitter being made to stop pussyfooting around their responsibilities as a 'publisher'. ID verification for social media and the stamping out of anymous accounts is the only real solution, IMO.

That would help but players were being racially targeted long before social media platforms existed.

      This is pure lip service.

      A) How many of those sending abuse even attended matches?
      B) Of those who sent abuse, how many are going to be tracked down?
      C) Why wait until now to bring this in, online abuse towards footballers has been going on for a decade?
      D) Is it only football fans abusing football players he wants to tackle, what about all the other people targeted for abuse?

Whatever you think about players taking the knee, booing it is at best making people feel unnecessarily uncomfortable and at worst an expression of racism. The fact Johnson and Patel couldn't find it in themselves to criticise those who do it tells me that they don't want to risk losing those votes. While that remains the case they'll never do anything meaningful to tackle racism.

Football matches have been used as a method of expressing violence, graveness and prejudices for years and it's the true fans who are well behaved who suffer for it, but sadly social media has opened up a whole new online world for racists and the government will probably only implement a half-hearted prevention attempt targetted at what's in the public eye like football matches. As you say it's all about votes.

McArthur at Palace may be worth monitoring perhaps

He definitely has a return in him and the cupboard is bare enough that he could be a consistent starter early on anyway. Long in the tooth but was a 100 point a season player.

May come down to whether Kouyate is in defence or midfield.

I had Saka in my team for ages. But has he become a 'no go' now given his devastation over his pen miss for England? It is the fellas mindset and frame of mind that worries me now.

I can’t see Saka starting in GW1. He’ll have extra time off now because England went far in the euros and will have less pre-season. Pepe will start on the right I’m guessing and ESR in the middle or on the left.

I think the Euro rest (and Arteta being a terrible manager) is more the reason to avoid than the penalty miss.

There are so many good options that cost less than Bamford, and Leeds don't have the easiest start.

Is Barnes a definite starter? He also doesn't take free-kicks or penalties for Leicester.

True Leeds start isn’t as good as could be hoped for.

Barnes was a regular for L City before his injury last season. Some speculators are calling him the new Marhez.

Agree with both points. Better options than Bamford at that price point (or less) given his fixtures and Barnes not nailed and injury prone. I reckon I’ll own both at some point this season, but personally I try to play safe and pick nailed/not injury-prone players in the beginning

Barnes is coming back from a knee injury, so needs to show he’s fit in pre season

But Bamford I agree - 28 returns in 38 games, penalties, plays for a premium attack (62 goals) - he’s an incredible FPL asset, definitely want to start with him

      1. Qaiss
        • 8 Years

Thing with Bamford is the Rodrigo rotation. Was that happening because it was the end of season and Leeds had nothing to play for? I owned Bamford a lot towards the end of the season and he constantly was getting taken off at 60.

          • 14 Years

I think Bamford was very tired after Christmas - kept going through these cycles of one or two quiet games, followed by an early bath, followed by a haul

He seemed to respond incredibly well to physical rest so I’m backing him to come out firing

Rodrigo managed 2 starts in the last 19 gameweeks I think,, and got taken off at halftime in the second of those in GW38 so just not sure he’s physically cut out for either Bielsa-ball or the premier league

      Agree on Barnes in particular.

Not in the current draft but if he looks nailed then I'll almost certainly start with him.

Could add Nacho to that list. Cheaper than Bam but on the evidence we saw crushes him in finishing ability. Both around 17% selected as opposed to 33% Watkins.

Nacho is really interesting, have him in since my first draft. With Rodgers I think Leicester can be just as competitive this season. Maddison is another one worth watching.

          Agreed

Think I saw Arsenal are after Maddison. Be a pity if so as he'd disappear in an FPL blackhole. He was really great last season when fit. Not far off Grealish returns when he was hot.

Question for me is if I can justify both Nacho and Barnes. Preseason crucial.

              Arteta the problem for me

Theoretically I can see it working but evidence of last season was he did best when he was settled. Could have been injury related but early and late on he was nothing much when his position was uncertain.

Would Pep play him consistently or fiddle around with him?

See that. Lineker was right, moving to Arsenal would be a step backwards. But maybe Arsenal can temp him with a better wage package. I think he’d develop better under Rodgers.

Maddison could be a great option. If he hadn't been injured for a big chunk of last season his price would probably be closer to 8M. I can't see him taking a step down to join Arsenal. Leicester have a way better side than them at the moment.

I think we are going to suffer if we don't select Cavani to start with. Those first 4 fixtures look great for him and United, and with the injury to Rashford he looks almost certain to start every game. That first game against Leeds could be an absolute goal-fest for him.

True, but he's 34 not ancient. He will probably start all the first few games and be taken off towards the end in some of them. That United v Leeds game has lots of goals written all over it and surely he will be amongst them? And then United have Southampton, Wolves, Newcastle... all games that he will be salivating over.

Cavani is quality, but no way is Ole going to start Cavani first 3/4 with Greenwood and Martial also bidding for that position. None of them are tempting, but Greenwood could emerge this season.

I was having a look at 6.5m mids and down there. I just realised for all the talk of Raphina. Trossard is very comparable to him in an fpl sense.

    Goals scored

    Trossard 5 - Raphinha 6

    Assists

    Trossard 6 - Raphinha 10

    Bonus

    Trossard 15 - Raphinha 10

    Minutes Played

    Trossard 2602 - Raphinha 2358

    Total Points

    Trossard 132 - Raphinha 133

    --

The added bonus for me when getting these two is that they seem to rotate well if needs be at least at the start of the season.

I’d be scared of rotating 2 6.5m players.
Just as likely to rotate out the points as you are to rotate in. Feels like that price is a set and forget and get the return across multiple games.

      Having both is interesting.

I agree, I was going to go the rotation route but logically playing the two seems the smarter option. From memory (in my head anyway) Trossard seems just as an exciting player to own 'on his day' as Lamptey.

I even considered Lallana/Welbeck but given their injury records I think I will avoid those two lads.

Raphinha plays full game usually. He started the league since gw9
But trossard was there from the start. Lower gametime

Only less than mins between the two lads though (about the equivalent of 2.7 games difference)
Trossard is high on the mins played for those 6.5 and less - seems rarely injured as well.

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

There are a few things to be careful of there:

      (1) Raphinha didn’t join until GW5, and didn’t make his first start until GW9
      (2) Trossard made 5 extra appearances (35) vs Raphinha (30)
      (3) In those 5 extra appearances he got 6 fewer attacking returns
      (4) Trossard plays for a team who scored 40 goals, Raphinha plays for one who scored 62 goals

Basically the way to compare them is since Raphinha’s first start in GW9 Trossard has 4G 4A to Raphinha’s 6G 9A

Fair enough but minutes wise there is not much in it.
Plus Brighton have arguably the much nicer fixtures. I am very tempted to get both. Plus the fact only 1.9% own Trossard baffles me.

Yeah that’s the misleading thing - put minutes to one side (as they’re being skewed by Raphinha’s staccato start to life in the premier league)

Look at them since Raphinha properly arrived in GW9 & there’s just no competition

Although that’s not the same as saying Trossard won’t get 40 points in the first 5 gameweeks to Raphinha’s 10 points (because that is entirely possible… not likely, but certainly possible in the literal sense)

But Raphinha looks the far superior pick in every way imo

The thing I will never forget with Trossard, as long as I live

And I think he’s the only player I’ve ever seen to do this

      Was in GW3 last year

Against Man Utd in 90 minutes he managed to hit the left post, hit the right post, and hit the bar in 3 different attacking moves

How Brighton weren’t out of sight in that game I’ll never ever know

And then it got even more bizarre being the only game in history to have a penalty awarded after the final whistle

Must be the strangest game I’ve seen in a long long time

Brighton found so many ways not to het over the line last season.

My strangest game in a long long time was when they lost to Palace who scored two worldies from the only two times they got into the box. One of those games you could replay 100 times and Brighton would win or draw 99 of them.

Yep - it was incredible at times some of the things that were happening to them

To be honest if they lose Ben White I think they could be in bother, taking a talent like that out of a side is going to sting

I think that Trossard would be a better pick if Brighton brought in a good centre forward, they were sort of impotent in front of goal for the most part last season.

I can't really argue with that I was literally just thinking all Brighton need is half decent forward and they would be a very dangerous side. The amount of chance they seemed to create v the amounts of goals they get is telling.

Reckon Henderson takes the GK for Man Utd this season? He was starting ahead of DDG at the end of last season.

At 5.0m Henderson would be 50% ownership, easy?

Ole has indicated that Hendo will start this year, but he also indicated that last year too.

I think Ole will rotate them and it’ll be a mess (despite any hints or promises to contrary)

When the rubber hits the road & they’re both competing in training every day they’ll do more harm than good to each other, and will still drop clangers in games

Neither are good enough, and these dual goalkeeper arrangements never work out imo

Utd need a Donnarumma type character

Possibly Meslier in another year or two - that kid is set for greatness

11 starts from their last 20 league, FA cup, and champions league games, and 7 from their last 19 league games…

Tuchel needs to show me he’s a league starter first - luckily GW7 looks a reasonable intercept point, if he’s started 5 of the first 6 I’ll think about him for GW7

Do many on here start the season with money in the bank - say £0.5m?

Every season I seem to end up wild-carding early and was wondering if this flexibility for price rises etc. would be a better long term strategy. For the first time in 8 seasons I'd like to get past game week 4 or 5 without hitting that button. Any thoughts appreciated

It's good to have the 0.5itb for flexibility. We're all looking for that 4.0 gem def that hopefully emerges pre-season. If not then I'll prob downgrade my least valuable player to create some headroom.

    Meslier:

    (3420/3150) * 154 = 167

Meslier would have scored something around 167 if he had played full games.
Missed 1 game due to injury and 2 last games because of end of the season rotation and rest.
He is only 21 years old and gets better each year probably.

In my team at the minute

I think Levy will have told Nuno he must play expansive attacking football, dont think his go-to back 3/5 formation will be seen initially. He tried to turn Wolves into a more possession based team by playing a back 4, but was hindered with the injuries. I'm sure this will be what he will work on with Spurs from day one.

Getting the urge to start with Cavani. Fun potentially explosive differential that can easily be downgraded to Bamford or Calvert-Lewin.

I cant beleive the lack of Man city in the template. Spurs away isn’t exactly a difficult fixture for them.

I can see it now everyone will be scrambling to get their assets in for GW 2 and 3. Getting the right assets is the issue.

I'm on Mahrez. Expecting big things from him at the start of the season. He's had the summer off while Sterling, Foden, Torres and Jesus all went deep in international tournaments so I'm hoping for lots of minutes for Riyad early doors.

And yeah I agree with you. If they score a couple against Spurs in GW1 there will be fear ahead of a home fixture vs Norwich in GW2.

Gundogan for me until KDB is back to fitness.

I really like the Gundo pick if KDB is out. Was very advanced when KDB was missing last season. Is their a timeframe on De Bruyne?

Digne and Dumfries as wingbacks/fullbacks for Everton can be gold especially under Rafa where you would expect them to keep clean sheets

Let’s hope so. Not believing anything until it actually happens. Would be very attacking.

    1st draft, any good?

    Sanchez
    TAA, Digne, Fofana, Coufal
    Salah, Fernandes, Mahrez, Raphinha
    Toney, Watkins

    (Gunnarsson, Barnes, Henderson, Lamptey)

Will make space for Shaw if it looks likely he'll start.

    Cheers

There's a month left and Klopp said he'll be back to normal training in 5-6 days. What are you talking about?

    sanchez

      assuming it's a 4.0k, 4.0d, 4.5m, 4.5m for the others?

I'd be worried about TAA & Shaw starting slow after euros, and Mahrez rotation.
Would want a playing bench - but otherwise nice.
      Watkins/DCL is a strong front.

Suspect it might be a touch like Southampton last year - if the 4.0 gets in you don't want part of the defence.

Foster is also quite the veteran nowadays - it's not as if he's going to be improving at this point.
