What can FPL managers expect from Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace?

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has taken the Crystal Palace hotseat vacated by Roy Hodgson.

The 45-year-old Frenchman has signed a three-year contract with the Eagles.

Recruitment is the club’s number one priority at present, as 11 first-team players saw their contracts expire at the end of June.

Some of those are expected to pen fresh deals, though Vieira will need to make further additions – after the capture of Michael Olise (£5.5m) – if he is to implement his style of play.

The History

After hanging up his boots in 2011, Vieira took over as the Elite Development Squad manager at Manchester City.

He stayed with the club until 2016, also coaching the reserve side, before taking the reins at City’s sister outfit New York City FC.

That led to an appointment as head coach at Ligue 1 outfit Nice in 2018, where Vieira completed two seasons – finishing a respectable seventh and fifth – before being sacked in December 2020.

Playing style

In his first interview as Crystal Palace manager, Vieira talked up a good attacking game:

I want the team to score more goals, to have more shots on target than we used to but at the same time, to keep this kind of mental strength that the team has created in the last couple of years – to become even stronger.

What I really want is to put a philosophy in place that my players understand really well, so that when they go on the field they can express themselves.

Because there is talent, and my responsibility will be to make that talent work well together. I want to see a team who is on the front foot.

However, his time at Nice tells the story of a coach who prioritised defence over attack.

In 2018/19, Nice conceded on 35 occasions – 17 fewer than they had let in the year before under Lucien Favre.

There was also a proportionate change in goals scored, with Vieira’s Nice managing just 30 goals compared to 53 with Favre at the helm.

The following curtailed season saw Nice up their goals-per-game average to 1.46, although that would still only roughly be mid-table in a typical Premier League season.

Man possessed

Vieira’s organised side defended through possession of the ball, as much as possible.

In his two full campaigns in France, only Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon kept the ball more than Nice in Ligue 1 – although his side ranked 13th and 10th respectively for attempts on goal in those seasons, suggesting something of a patient, potentially frustrating, style of build-up play.

George Swan, who played under Vieira at City, told the Athletic:

He’d like people to play through phases of play. You’d get it from the keeper, put it to the right-back and then he’d stop it and say, ‘the right-back has it, so you’re going to drop here and the midfielder is going to come here’. It was all about options. Everyone knew after time on the training pitch with him what was expected.

By contrast, only Newcastle (37.7%) and relegated West Brom (36.7%) kept less possession on average than Palace (39.8%) last season.

In May 2019, Nice goalkeeper Walter Benitez told France Football magazine of Vieira:

The overall idea of the coach is not to lose the ball too quickly, to keep it, to play and to have possession. The coach also adapts depending on who we are going to play.

Former Man City EDS captain George Glendon also recognised Vieira’s adaptability, telling the Athletic:

In the under-23s it’s all about development but in the senior team three points matter more, so he has balanced it out. But he is all about playing out from the back.

On beginning pre-season at the Selhurst Park club, Vieira himself said:

I think the first week is always important. To know the players, but [also] for the players to know how I want to work and the philosophy that I will want to implement in the football club.

The first week will be when I talk to the players individually, and try to understand where we are, what we want to achieve and explain to them the way I see the game and the way I want to build a team.

In an interview with BeIn Sports last year, Vieira also referenced his intention to lay down a blueprint as a head coach.

Going to New York and Nice allowed me to try things, to be more clear about things and the system I want to use and what I want from the players in that system. I have a big picture about how I want to play the game and how I am as a coach.

Despite all the positivity above, it’s worth mentioning this damning critique in Get French Football News upon his departure from Nice:

Despite an influx of creative talent, Nice were never truly convincing. Their defence, though solid, relied too often on the heroics of keeper Walter Benítez, and Vieira jumped from one formation to the next seemingly at random. Devoid of cohesion and creativity, Nice struggled to fashion chances for poacher Dolberg. Vieira’s philosophy was close to indecipherable.

The Prospects

As well as having the third-worst expected goals conceded figure in the division, Palace had the second-worst xG total.

A snapshot into that overall number is the Eagles’ 2-1 win away to Brighton in Gameweek 25, when they managed an xG of just 0.23.

Whether Vieira prioritises defence or attack, there is huge room for improvement in both areas at Selhurst Park.

As previously alluded to, transfers in are going to be all-important for the south London side.

“I have a really good idea about the team that we have. I think what we will need is to bring [in] players who can create chances; players who can score goals.” – Patrick Vieira

Vieira has already stuck to his word above with the signing of Olise, though Palace will need several more bodies – likely a mix of new and old – as the head coach looks to change the club’s style.

Fresh blood in midfield is also going to be required, particularly if Vieira has designs of implementing his own version of a 4-3-3 system at Palace.

The Frenchman largely used a four-man defence during his time at Nice, though did switch to a wing-back system at times.

“As midfielders it was, ‘one of you sit, two stay high, don’t clog it up by coming deeper’. When it came together, it looked really good. We also did a lot of work defensively on how to press the ball, which was a big learning curve. It was a very structured way of playing.” – former City youth midfielder Louis Hutton

As with any new manager, the proof will be in the pudding. We can look to pre-season for starter clues but it won’t be until the Gameweek 1 main course and beyond that we can really assess Vieira’s plan of action.

Given the slightly muddied picture painted above – the suggestion of tedious, low-scoring football at Nice married with Vieira’s comments about scoring more goals – it’s not the worst idea to stay clear of Palace for the time being, at least while the dust settles.

In truth, Fantasy managers will likely be targeting their opposition rather than the Eagles themselves: Vieira’s new charges sit bottom of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-10.

If there is no playing 4.0 defender option, do you like to:

-Have two 4.5s as 4/5 defender and 2nd/3rd bench.
-Have a 4.0 third bench and upgrade the other defender to a 5.0.
    -Have a 4.0 third bench, a 4.5 4th defender and upgrade elsewhere?

    Advice please:

    Henderson
    Shaw / Coufal / James / Digne
    Salah / Fernandes / Saka / Grealish
    DCL / Watkins

    Foster / Raphinha / Manquillo / Obafemi

General thoughts on the team and is Digne - TAA and Raphinha - Bissouma worth it?

Just read the heading of the article above. First thought was 'relegation'. It is basically a rebuild job at Palace needs to bring in youth and refresh an ageing squad. I seem to remember seeing that Palace had the oldest average age starting eleven in the EPL last season.

Just read it myself. I'm of the same mind. The problem's not Vieira - they need half a first team. Palace are not a first choice team for many; I can see a lot of late transfers of players disappointed not to be at a better club, with little playing time together before the season starts.

also in regards to DCL, Moise Kean is still an Everton player so he can possibly fill in if DCL misses gw 1 or 2, he actually could be an interesting option this year if he's not sold and Rafa can get a tune out of him after his decent spell at PSG

You are allowed 15 players, deciding to start with only 14 is madness (apart from keeper maybe),.with the potential for covid disruption, on top of the usual rotation, bans and injuries.

Considering it. Currently have Davis, who wastes a Villa spot. There have been suggestions he will be loaned out too.

Obviously it's for if you wanted a 4.5m forward. None of them will play. I'd rather have one that won't drop in price and hope I never need them than one that gets the odd 1 pointer here and there but loses TV.

Like the look of this 343

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Cresswell
    Salah Fernandes Gundogan Smith-Rowe
    Watkins Antonio Toney

    Gunn Doherty Gilmour B.Williams

    0.5m ITB

    - Shaw will become Digne if it is clear he won't be ready for GW1.
    - Doherty will play ahead of ESR for GW2 and 3 (if clear he is a sure starter under Nuno)
    - Gundogan can become Foden with that extra 0.5m, depends on who impresses in preseason.

My thought with Cresswell (and Coufal, who I have) is that there are times we’d want to sit them. So I’m loathe to have a dude defender. I really like 5 playing defenders.

    Latest.

    Meslier, Foster
    TAA, Digne, Coufal, Ayling, Lamptey
    Bruno, Salah, Grealish, Torres, Raphinha
    Watkins, Welbeck, 4.5

    Digne could become Shaw.

Deciding to do Meslier over Sanchez - this is close so I’d rather the 5.0 so I have more flexibility with keeper moves - I assume I won’t get the right one.

Really like the value of the mid-price mids. Might end up with 2x 7.5s but at the moment it’s 7.0 and 8.0.
I figure it Buendia looks good I’d rather Grealish for all the same reasons.

Welbeck is an early season punt, but the plan is to play 4-5-1 mostly.

    Chiellini play like shxx

    https://www.indy100.com/sport/england-italy-euro-2020-final-replay-b1883354

"The match on 11/07/2021 was not fair at all. After Italy only receiving a yellow card for dragging England players like they were slaves. All the pushes, pulls and kicks and Italy was still allowed to win? Definitely biased. Italy should have been given a red card for their gameplay and the rematch should happen with a non-biased referee. This was not fair at all.”

He's a season wrecker if utd hit their straps - in his time in the league he's been more destructive than 95% of what we've seen from Salah since his 300 point season

For my money, the Man Utd "Meta" this saeson will be:

      1. Ole rotating his embarassment of riches in the front 3 positions (Cavani, Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho, Pogba)
      2. Man Utd going up another gear in attack to 80+ goals scored (vs. last seasons 73)
      3. Bruno playing his FPL "vacuum cleaner" role behind the rotating attackers - i.e. just hoovering up goal involvements (and the baps that come with) week after week after week

Question marks over Pogba's presence being a good thing or not for sure, and the end of season form certainly wasn't stellar...

But personally I think that was more tiredness - from Ole doing stupid things like playing him on thursday night second leg europa league games with a 4-0 first leg advantage etc

And even through all that he still popped up with 2 goals in his last 4 appearances - that's what an off form Bruno does... when he's rested and on form?

      He will ruin your life

Interesting points, Maximus. But it is a little hyperbolic to say he will ruin your life if you don’t have him. I see potentially United’s FPL points being spread more thinly across the wealth of attacking talent they have, especially with the addition of Sancho.

Of course, I may be completely wrong, but it’s a calculated risk worth taking imo, especially since I won’t be captaining him.

I can’t see a player in the game with Bruno’s potential for mayhem - maybe Salah, but Jota is there now too along with Mane & Firmino

I see Utd scoring more goals this season with Sancho on board, Cavani settled & Greenwood a year older/wiser…

And more goals for Utd means almost certainly means more goal involvements for Bruno imo (and the automatic baps he gets when he so much as farts on the pitch)

Nailed penalty taking talisman in a potential 80 goal attack who has also been the top scorer in the game since he arrived…

Just personally not a gift horse I’m going to start looking in the mouth 🙂

I dont mind going without him but their arent any alternatives that I would like to pick, thats why going with expensive one and then offloading later for likes of Son or Havertz or Kevin feels safer approach.

Fair point, Holmes. I think Mahrez looks a very good alternative early on in a 3-5-2, switching to someone like Havertz circa GW7.

A bit of a waste of time planning that far ahead, but I’ve been having some fun with Ragabolly’s planning tool; that boy’s a freaking genius.

Definitely. Waste of money early doors. Cap Salah every week and spread the funds

If Kane goes to City, I'm going to have to lose one of Salah or Bruno.

I haven't hadn't him in a draft yet - simply because of Salah's run of fixtures, the fact Son's still immense value, plus it affords me a double up in Pool's defence.

Any arguments to go KdB + Greenwood over Bruno + Raphina/Pepe/Foden?

Kdb and Bruno are the same price. So ignore the other players. Kdb vs Bruno I'd lean to kdb but keep an eye on pre season minutes for all euro players

KDB one goal from play in the first half of the season, 8 appearances/5 blanks in the second half of the season, hamstring injury recovery immediately followed by ankle ligament tear (that he allegedly played with vs Italy)

Greenwood in a pool that includes Martial, Cavani, Sancho and possibly Pogba (who has played LWF in Rashfords place before)

KaDB is injured and may miss the start, and Greenwood is not first team. So, no

Different but I like it. Chelsea have tough opening fixtures though. Might be worth waiting before doubling up

I think only Liverpool is a really tough fixture. Can see them catching people napping with big scores against CPL, ars, AVL

Do Chelsea do big scores under Tuchel?

25 goals in his 19 league games...

Barely even in the top 10 for goals scored...
