There isn’t much to champion in the Newcastle defence based on last season’s evidence.

United were in the bottom four for everything from shots allowed to expected goals conceded (xGC), with only relegated Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion keeping fewer clean sheets.

Aside from the obvious point about the modest quality of players at Bruce’s disposal, there were a number of significant reasons for the creakiness at the rear.

One factor was player unavailability.

Newcastle were the only Premier League club who didn’t have a single player banking 30+ starts (see above), with the constant chopping and changing at the back – mostly enforced by injury and a particularly damaging coronavirus outbreak at the club – unsurprisingly affecting the collective defensive displays.

First-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) started just over a third of the Magpies’ league matches, club captain Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) was missing for exactly half of the campaign and midfield shield Isaac Hayden (£4.5m) was bedridden by COVID-19 and then missed the run-in through injury.

Centre-half options Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett (all £4.5m) also had significant periods on the sidelines.

Another aspect is the ghost of Rafael Benitez.

Bruce has repeatedly made noises about moulding Newcastle into a more attacking unit ever since his appointment two years ago, in a desperate attempt to escape the shadow of his more-revered predecessor.

Benitez favoured a pragmatic approach with the limited squad members available, with Newcastle finishing among the top eight teams for fewest goals conceded in both 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Bruce’s fixation on putting his own stamp on the club has resulted in the Magpies shipping a combined 25 more goals in the subsequent two campaigns, with a Gameweek 30 formation switch last season his latest attempt to shake things up.

3-5-2: MORE ATTACKING, LESS SECURE

Not from the start, but you could wait until a bit of the season has passed and make one with 4.1, 5.4 valued players etc.

Only have 5/6 of these in my current set up but this under 10% side could be relatively competitive if Mane restores his form of matching Mo and Sancho starts with a bang to give two captain options. 11.0 in goal is simply there to spend out

    Ederson Pickford
Tierney Rudiger Castagne Keane Ait Nourie
    Mane Sancho Greenwood Barnes ESR
    Wilson Jim Welbeck

          Possibly 😉

          GK's - too expensive

Tierney, Rudiger and Castagne would be decent ish picks however want to start with Robbo & Trent which means 4.5m defenders to fill remaining spots.

Midfielders maybe ESR as a 4th of 5th mid , wouldn't captai any of them.

Forwards, looks like a schedule on physios room wall.

            Fair dos

I see the argument for Robbo TAA (though prefer the VVD variant) but just about the only decision I've made thus far is to avoid that double up until cs start to roll in. That leaves me looking at 5.0 5.5 types to add to TAA. Digne is a no no for me so...

I've had Sancho in and out as a possible for ages (using Rashford as a placeholder) as one of my favoured set ups is with a 3rd power mid and there's a decision to be made between Son Mahrez Sancho if I go that way. Sancho third on that list but not impossible.

Jim is a new one for me. The more I think it over the more I like it if he comes through preseason but he is essentially unbreakable unless you smash his head. That's a gameplay decision.

      No Trossard?
      Coleman an option?

It does look fairly decent no sure about Greenwood Barnes though - purely from a gametime standpoint. Until Rashford comes back I suppose Greenwood is OK until then.

Barnes was 100% nailed before he was injured but perhaps some doubt now.

He's a fascinating case in point of how berserk ownership can be. He was very likely going to the Euros before this injury and was crushing it. People forget so quickly.

Very good point on Barnes - you jogged my memory that he was flying at one stage in fpl and irl. Will he force his way back into the Leicester team now though?

Maddison is one player who I am avoiding like the plague. Had him last season when he was back from injury. He did nothing. Same with Pereira from Leicester. I picked the wrong Leicester ones basically!
Castange and Telemens could be good value as well I think as well as the 'fpl darling' Iheanacho.

I've suffered both sides of Maddison

He's surprisingly streaky for a mid but is ace if you time him right. Castagne is one I'm potentially on from this lot but I'd need clear indications that he's nailed and prefer Tierney right now as a player with much the same profile.

Worst part about watching Maddison in games it looks like he 'might' spark. But he doesn't. As you say very streaky. I had him before he was injured at one stage I think it was two seasons ago. He was the focal point of everything. At the rate he is going now he could be a fringe player in the Leicester side .

To Sancho or Not to Sancho?
Will he be a similar story to Kagawa/Mkhitaryan/Werner/Havertz or you think it's different because he's English and doesn't need to settle in a new country/ new style of football?

Also see a lot of people comparing with Bruno : A relative unknown quantity in the league vs a player who's easily the highest score for the past 1 and a half season justifies 2.5 million difference.

I went with Sancho purely on the basis he should start most games has pace and will likely win pens for Fernandes. I feel that 2.5m can be better spent elsewhere in my overall squad.

Highlight, stats in Bundesliga in meanless, and Dortmund is top 3 team there

          Werner 28 goals 8 assists in 34 games, 16goals 9 assists in 30games before
At Euro 2020 you saw some amateur striker Weighorst Kakalzic who cored about 20 goals in weak teams at Bundesliga.

He hasn’t mentioned stats. He and I are talking about his actual play. I assume as you have a strong opinion on him you’ve watched him a lot.

It was Neale on a FFS podcast that put up a great argument for double watford keepers. It swayed me - save points etc. As I wanted to save .5 (previously had pickford) and I did not want to go double Brighton defence. As don't trust the Brighton defence as much as you do!

I created a no Kane draft if he does not move to Man City.

Simply changing Coleman to Robertson and 'downgrading' Kane to Vardy.
I looked at Leicester's 1st three fixtures Wolves - West Ham - Norwich.

It would not surprise me if they scored in all three of those games.
Plus Vardy v Norwich is a lovely captain option gw3 on pens etc.

    Bachmann- Foster
Robertson - Holding - Lamptey (Shaw - Llorente)
Trossard - Sancho - Salah - Raphinha (Gilmour)
    Vardy - Watkins - DCL

I really really like the idea of Vardy at the start of this season. Think you would need a way out though

      1. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

I thought about that as well the beauty of owning Vardy is the 10.5 gives a lot of options.
Cavani, a 7.5, can go 4.5 and upgrade elsewhere.

My likely plan if kane does not move is to get Kane in at some stage instead of Vardy after gw3. Unless there are fires to put out elsewhere.

I can see the obvious advantages of getting Iheanacho. But the amount of times last season where Vardy got a pen or even two late on and suddenly he was in bonus territory - that is what is in my head at least. I could be completely wrong.

I have kind of landed on this Vardy draft almost by accident.
But the more I think of it (as you say) it looks great for the start. Fully rested Vardy no Euros on pens - one of the two young guns Ihenacho and Daka doing the leg work for him.

Why do you think Kane will get more points at City??? He will play less minutes as Pep rotates. And it's not like he performs badly at Spurs. Still the top points scorer last year

      1. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Because Kane will be the only out and out top quality striker at City. Kane is rarely injured and Man City created loads of chances last year that were not finished.

As for Spurs I am unsure of the Nuno effect how will he set them up and so on.

Kane is rarely injured?? Are you sure?? Spurs play him half fit, Man City won't.

And Pep will happily play without an out and out striker. He will play less minutes for City guaranteed.

He may get more points per game at City, but his end of year total will be no more than last year.

As far as Nuno affect, do you think he's a less attacking manager than Moronho?

I should add, I think Kane is a great pick. I just think he's a great pick whether he's at Spurs or City.

What I meant is that Kane rarely misses games. When was the last time he had a long term injury?
You are correct that Kane may play less minutes but I would argue he is likely to get more points than Last year. As even if he does not start now and again - the amount of chances city create will mean he will likely still be in the points if he comes off the bench.
Basically I think Kane will be Pep's Aguero 2.0 - THE MAN.

No but seriously, Shaw with Williams as 5th defender - one of them plays. Keep the spare 0.5 to upgrade Williams when no longer needed. Or maybe he goes to Southampton if Telles recovers by TDD.
