Great Expectations

Will this be Kai Havertz’s breakout season in FPL?

We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) appeal of Kai Havertz (£8.5m) in this first pre-season instalment of Great Expectations, a series of articles on players who have shown glimpses of promise and who are potentially on the cusp of a breakout FPL campaign.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

INITIAL STRUGGLES

The Germany international mostly struggled to live up to his FPL price tag in 2020/21 but belatedly showed promise at the tail-end of the season.

The 22-year-old didn’t look comfortable in Frank Lampard’s 4-3-3 formation and then missed several weeks of the campaign after testing positive for COVID-19 in November.

The condition had long-term effects, something he touched on earlier this year:

The illness hit me hard. It lasted some four to five weeks before I could even think of getting back on to a football pitch. During the time I was ill. I was quite ill, to be honest. And I wish it upon absolutely no one. Then the aftermath was difficult too – I really had to work hard to get back to the pre-COVID fitness levels. You have to live with it.

Following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel in January, Havertz picked up an injury which ruled him out for a month but he has since shone in the German tactician’s 3-4-2-1 setup.

Benefiting from a move to a more advanced, central position, he thrived either as a no. 10 or as a false nine.

Above: Kai Havertz’s 2020/21 average position map under Frank Lampard (yellow) and Thomas Tuchel (green)

Havertz produced several decisive moments during the run-in, with the biggest, of course, arriving against Manchester City in the Champions League final, when he slotted in the winning goal.

“In my opinion right now, between a nine and a ten is pretty much his best position. He has the freedom to drop, to move between the two positions, and to shift positions between a ten and nine. Between a nine, a ten and a winger: that is the space where can be decisive for us.” – Thomas Tuchel

As a result of being positioned higher up the pitch, Havertz is shooting in better, more central areas, which is highlighted in these shot maps:

Above: Kai Havertz’s shot heatmap (left), goal attempts with shots on target in green (centre) and xG shot map (right) under Thomas Tuchel.

PROTECTING HAVERTZ?

The main issue with Havertz in 2020/21 was the fact that his minutes were managed.

Tuchel started him in just seven of his 19 Premier League games, which made it increasingly difficult for FPL managers to invest.

However, the table below from Gameweek 27 onwards does suggest that a lot of that rotation was based around keeping him fresh for the Champions League.

Scherpen starts. Worrying time for Sanchez owners.

No Lamprey in starting line up as well

If you specifically wanted Leicester, Luke Thomas is the better option over Fofana at 4.5

Surely Perreira and Castagne are first choice by a long shot at RB & LB, and if Justin comes right any time soon he should be above either of them based on his efforts last season. Thomas might be more nailed than Fofana, but it's relative.

I've nothing to back up what I'm saying except my thoughts, so you could be right.
I noticed though last season that even when Pereira returned from injury, BR put him either on the bench or in the forward midfield spot, leaving Thomas LB. Leicester's last several games of last season, Thomas was starting whilst Pereira was benched. BR seems to have developed a policy that if a player who replaces an injured player performs well, then they'll retain their place. Personally I reckon the season starts with 4 at the back with Evans confirmed still injured. So Fofana, Soyoncu at CB and Thomas on the left and Castagne (he may be late back) on the right.

Ah yes I saw that one, although there was no quote from BR. I haven't seen Barnes in their pre season training day videos, and he didn't play in today's Burton friendly. There's talk on the Leicester forums he'll remain out till Christmas, though I hope not.

Every year I think “this will be his year” or “he could be a steal”...... yet every year he fails to deliver. Starting to think he’s just your average fpl player and he reflects a correct price.

I'd say last year Barnes delivered, as he cemented his place in the first XI after a couple of months from the seasons start. He banged in goals and assists from then and if his season wasn't cut short in February, he was being hyped to play the Euros. Last season was his best yet, and if he's fully recovered from injury, there's nothing to say his form won't continue into the start of the season and be a bargain at 7m

You should only have 2 fodder players. 4.0m and 4.5m (mid or fwd) maximum.

The rest should all be players you are happy playing in your starting XI.

If you take history into account much I believe he’s scored 2 in 3 against them. I’d have still started with him regardless of previous form though as I think he’s a season keeper and don’t want to have to WC early to bring him in if he starts off well and particularly for GW3

ESR at that price is as an enabler - less concerned with fixtures.

Antonio will be fit for 1/3 of the year. WH have some of the best attacking fixtures for the first 8. No better time to have him until he gets hurt then move to someone else.

he looks underpriced by 0.5 maybe even 1.0 if he has a good season but you can't compare him potentially matching Sterling or Mane (albeit both had underwhelming seasons last year), feel that's a stretch considering it will be his first season in the Prem

Ok third draft which I think has the best balance so far. Thoughts?

    Sanchez
    Trent Shaw Digne
    Salah Sancho Mahrez Raphina
    Watkins Antonio Toney

    Foster Coufal Brownhill Ayling

Why couldn’t ESR get in the team in the second half of last season?

      because he's a poor man's Ozil

        Lol.

And if he wasn’t an option at 4.5m second half of last season, then why is he now an option at 5.5m this season?

I do not understand the logic here.....

I think the fact that he's almost certain to play more this season (unless Arsenal buy an AM) plus the fact the club have recently handed him the no.10 shirt has added gloss to him as an asset and tbf 5.5 is a kind price

            Thanks for this info.....

Sounds like he could improve on the amount of games he started last season then. Could be value there.

yeah could be but considering Arsenal's GW2-3 fixtures time enough to invest in him I feel

12 starts, 7 benchings second half of season.

He wasn’t exactly a main stay.....

Dallas a much better option IMO.

You know young players improve yeah?
Like that’s a normal thing to happen.

Clearly Arsenal value him based on the new contract.

Odegaard isn’t back who seemed to be the preferred no.10.

No need for sarcastic rhetorical questions just because I have questioned one of your picks.

This is a site of debate and opinions.

I think he’s a questionable pick. Reasons explained above.

Alright sorry, didn’t mean to be a jerk.

Best I can tell the reasons for being concerned are that he didn’t play a lot last season. Which is fair. But also things are different this year.

At 5.5 he doesn’t need to start every game, especially if when he does play he’s at the 10 with good attackers around him.

I think he’s a reasonable pick as a fifth mid. Or even a fourth if you have 3 strong forwards.

            No worries 🙂

Ok I’m starting to understand the pick a bit more now. I watched him a fair bit last season and when he did start I thought he was a brilliant player and was sorry to see him not starting more games for them.

Maybe a breakthrough season for him then.....

I believe it was due to Odegaard being there at the time. And I still don’t believe he’s all that nailed on

Thank you....my opinion also, at least until Sancho starts to score points and the Son/Spurs situation clarifies re Kane.
0.5 ITB makes life a little easier too.

    Kane

don't see the point of 451 if you're playing 2 x 4.5 defenders every week tbh

Can’t have the attacking assets I want with double liverpool defenders
But then, without robbo it’s seems I’m giving away lots of points
And not to forget that he is a bit underpriced
Finished the season at 7.3 and had risen in price since start of last season

To be honest I think it’s perfectly reasonable to go with 1 pool defender..... Just sell robbo for 24 hours, you’ll get used to not seeing him in there 😉

I'm done with my selection, will try to change just before the Game week.

    Sánchez
    TAA-Digne-Targett-Lamptey
    Salah-Sancho-Mount
    Watkins-Toney-Nacho

    Sub: Foster-Ayling-Raphinha-Brownhill

    GW2: Mount > Son

      Don't bench Raphinha.

Team looks pretty solid. Only player I don't like that much is Targett. 5.0m there are better picks like Tierney, Reguilon, Coufal. Or better yet, avoid that slot and go 5.5m or 4.5m.

This, the man needs a break considering he hasn’t really had a proper offseason for a few years now and his ankle probably still isn’t 100%
