Great Expectations

Can Rayan Aït Nouri live up to his potential and become a viable FPL asset?

We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) appeal of Rayan Aït Nouri (£4.5m) in our second pre-season instalment of Great Expectations, a series of articles on players who have shown glimpses of promise and who are potentially on the cusp of a breakout FPL campaign.

All stats and heatmaps used in this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

THE TRANSFER

Aït Nouri became a permanent Wolverhampton Wanderers player earlier this month after a promising campaign on loan at Molineux last season.

The Frenchman, who arrived on a five-year deal with the option of a sixth, is Bruno Lage’s fourth signing as Wolves new head coach.

On the deal, technical director Scott Sellars said:

“We think Rayan is a great signing for the football club. He proved last season that he’s a very talented player, with lots of potential – I thought he did well and kicked on towards the end of the season. He’s a player who is only going to get better, he’s a good boy, who works hard, and settled in well here.

We’ve used the loan before buying approach well in the past, with people like Jonny and Raul [Jimenez]. I think it’s a great way for both parties to get to know each other, to see if they can adapt and enjoy English football, and we get a chance to have a look first, and see if a deal can be done.

In Rayan’s case, he got a lot of minutes because both Jonny and Marcal suffered injury problems last season, so he had lots of games in the Premier League to show his quality.

At his age, he’s got a lot to learn still, a lot to work on, and I’m sure with us he’ll develop. He has great quality going forward, we all remember his goal on his debut, so he’s got a lot going for him, as well as areas to develop, like all players.”

The question is: can Aït Nouri now kick on and become one of the best budget defenders FPL?

2020/21 REVIEW

It didn’t take long for Aït Nouri to make his mark at Wolves, as he opened the scoring after just 18 minutes of his debut in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace back in October.

In his 23 appearances that followed, the youngster showed plenty of intent to get forward and provide an attacking threat, both as a left-back and left wing-back.

Above: Rayan Aït Nouri’s touch heatmap 2020/21

However, it was in the final nine games of the season that he truly established himself.

With Jonny (£4.5m) needing surgery on another ACL problem and Fernando Marçal (£4.5m) on the sidelines too, Aït Nouri produced solid performances as Wolves secured back-to-back 1-0 wins over Fulham, when he started taking set-pieces, and Sheffield United.

He then impressed against Brighton and Hove Albion and West Bromwich Albion, as his confidence and stature in the team grew.

Statistically, amongst all defenders (with a 1,000-minute threshold), he ranked 11th for crosses and second for take-ons per 90 minutes:

I quite like this team. A lot of ways to get Kane as well if he transfers at the end.

    Bachmann Foster
    Robertson Shaw Dunk White Omobamidele
    Salah Son Raphinha Buendia Harrison
    Cavani Bamford Iheanacho

It's a no from me.you saved 2m on Bruno>son and squandered it Cavani. Also double Leeds midfield is overkill

This lot good or back to the drawing board?

    Sanchez – 4.0
    TAA – Ayling – White - Coady/4.5 - – Omob
    Bruno – Salah – ESR - Son - Brownhill
    Watkins - Toney – Nacho

I think for a thin defense this is a pretty good team I think. Other option is Son down to an 8.0 or so and upgrading the 4th midfielder. But I do like the strength up front.

This. I'd up one defender to a nailed-on 5.5 and have a rotating pair of 4.5s so you're not forced to play 4.5s in games they might get massacred.

Is it a good tactic to bench boost in the first week or are you better off waiting for a DGW?

    1. Zimo
      • 5 Years

It is kinda a decent shout to BB GW1 cuz essentially you're getting a free wildcard at the start of the game. But then you're also stuck with 4 bench players if you don't want to spread the funds that much.

I dunno. How much surety do we have about lineups before the first games?

Seems like we know more as the season goes on. Not even taking into account double game weeks.

I used BB in GW1 the past four seasons and all 15 played each time...this season seems far trickier though so will be holding onto it I reckon (rubbish chip though tbf)

    3. Holmes
      • 10 Years

Depends what works for you. If you are good at planning for BB in later stage, then its more effective in DGW.

Playing in 1st (or 2nd) GW is like hitting a target in dark, can work, can fail.

I'd never do it GW1 myself. Too many imponderables - players rested after summer internationals, new signings ready to go or not yet, managers trying out new formations and tactics.

Hello folks, suggestions on this team pelase :

    Meslier - 4.0 GK
    TAA - Robertson - Digne - Coufal - Fofana
    Salah - Son - Raphinha - Buendia - Gilmour
    Antonio - Wilson - Toney

Very solid, decent. Salah and Son cover your captaincy options for ages. Good bench cover.

I'm without Bruno. I tried squeezing him in, but it leaves the rest of my squad unsatisfactory. Son to Sancho would be an easy tweak, but if you want to keep Son and TAA, I think you have to keep your fingers crossed over lack of Bruno.

I think will produce good value at 6.5. Reminds of Pukki from last Norwich season. Norwich went down, Pukki gave return of 140 odd, if I remeber correctly. Thanks for the suggestion though

Even with a lot of regression from last year's number to factor in for that, he could still be very good value. Talisman, on pens etc. If he weighs in with 10-15 goals, which is feasible, bargain.

This assessment of RAN has nudged me over the line. I had him booked in for a GW4 transfer, but I'll have him in my opening squad, albeit on the bench for the first three. I'm happy for him rather than Fofana to step up if needs be.

2.0m in the bank to delve into when s**t hits the fan. Obviously Sancho needs to be in pre-season soon, as does Castagne. Barring any big injuries or transfers I’m happy enough here. Maybe Iheanacho instead of Toney. We shall see. Luke Thomas instead of Fofana another option.

    Sanchez
    Castagne Dunk Fofana
    Salah(C) Son Sancho Buendia
    Wilson Watkins Toney

Salah/Son gives you good captaincy coverage.
You go against the grain like me with choices from a narrow range of clubs.
GW4 presumably you drop your Foxes defence and step up with Wolves wingbacks - interesting.
If you're very worried about Sancho, you could lose Batman and upgrade Jadon to Bruno with that spare cash.

There has been news about Shaw's broken ribs, but he's currently second on most owned players...

Is Shaw (even Maguire & other England players involved in Euro Finals) likely to start from GW1, irrespective of injury?

Even when they didnt had 3 fit CBs, Rodger decided to stick with that formation with Castagne or Amartey as CBs.

It's more that Tuchel by the end was using Havertz central with Werner out left - where Pulisic plays. I'd give Puli a less than 50% chance of starting. Gundo probably will start GW1 if KDB is out, but I see him reverting to a deeper, less-FPL-friendly role.
          The rest is standard stuff.

Double up with Raphinha just doesnt feel right. Even individually, we are probably going to see a drop in his return due to lack of CSs.

Not seeing Havertz in many teams. Am I missing something?

    - Most probably he will play OOP at false 9 for the UCL winning team.

    - I don't see him getting benched even if Chelsea sign Haaland. Havertz can play at any position in the Chelsea attack.

    - Costs just 8.5

    - Chelsea have good fixtures in the short term. Out of the first 5 fixtures, only Liverpool(A) is a tricky one.

    - Chelsea have amazing fixtures in the long term. From GW1 to GW11, they have an amazing run of games, except for Liverpool(A) in GW3 & City(H) in GW6.

I think the problem is he was priced nicely last year to say he's worth getting over players like Rashford or Sancho. But now he's more expensive and players like Rashford have remained the same price. So unless you're regularly going to captain him it's better to spread the funds.

      Not going anywhere

Man Utd got 137 goal involvements last season from 73 goals

Their attack is only getting better and they could go to 150+ goal involvements this year

Bruno looking good to sit there & harvest at least 30-40 of those (plus the inevitable baps)

Pairing him with Shaw is the dream ticket for FPL - 100% set piece coverage, 5 points per cleansheet, and XGi coming out of their arses

    Robbo, Chilwell, Rudiger
Salah (c), Havertz, Jota, Sarr, ESR

Welbeck the only pick I don't like tbh...

    1. Holmes

By going 6.5m mid over Jota, you can get Trent and Toney for Robertson and Welbeck (if interested)

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

There's ton of ways you can have Salah, Jota, TAA if you don't have triple Chelsea. That's a bit of a killer, especially with their opening fixtures. With Pool and Chelsea meeting GW3, you're stuck on a captain, too.

I don't think it'll matter a great deal if he plays deeper. If he gets penalties, he gets bonus. Will he get as many penalties this season? Not sure, but if he doesn't then he shouldn't be value for 12.0M.
