How to play Fantasy Bundesliga – A beginner’s guide

Fantasy Football Scout are joining forces with Fantasy Bundesliga in 2021/22, with top picks and advice to come in pre-season and beyond.

German football enthusiasts and Scout site users FFFrog and Stats Don’t Lie are on board for the upcoming campaign but before we draw on their expertise, we’ll run through the rules and scoring system of the game.

Sign up to Fantasy Bundesliga and pick a team here

PICKING A TEAM

As with FPL, Fantasy Bundesliga managers have to pick a squad of 15 players (two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three strikers) and then select a starting XI from that.

The budget is set at 150.0m, with players initially varying in price from 1.0m to 17.0m and there being regular falls/rises depending on form rather than the weekly number of transactions made.

Robert Lewandowski, for example, climbed as high as 26.5m by the end of last season thanks to his on-field achievements. Players never dip lower than 1.0m, however.

There are no limits on how many players a Fantasy manager can pick from one particular club, so long as it’s financially viable.

TRANSFERS/WILDCARD

How to play Fantasy Bundesliga - A beginner's guide 3

Unlimited transfers are allowed until the start of the campaign and then three are permitted between matchdays (the equivalent of Gameweeks) after that point.

In the Wildcard weeks, managers will be able to transfer more players in and out of their squads.

There will be five unlimited transfer periods for Fantasy managers in the 2021/22 Bundesliga season:

First international break: 30 August-11 September
Second international break: 4 October-15 October
Third international break: 8 November-19 November
Winter transfer window: 20 December-7 January
Fourth international break: 21 March-1 April

PLAYER PRICES

Player pricing will fluctuate based on the performance of each player compared to assets in the same position:

Price increases (must play at least 70 mins)

400,000 – 10 or more points above the position average
300,000 – 6 to 9 points above the position average
200,000 – 3 to 5 points above the position average
No Change – 0 to 2 points above the position average
300,000 – winning the official Player of the Month award
100,000 – winner of an ‘in-form card’ in the official Team of the Week

Price decreases (must play at least 70 mins)

No Change – 0 to 2 points below the position average
200,000 – 3 to 5 points below the position average
300,000 – 6 to 9 points below the position average
400,000 – 10 or more points below the position average
100,000 – Didn’t play
100,000 – Receiving a red card (independent of minutes played)

SUBSTITUTIONS

Much like in UCL Fantasy, managers can manually substitute out players (if they have blanked, for example) and replace them with those that haven’t yet played.

If you remove a player who has already played, you will lose his points.

‘STAR PLAYERS’

How to play Fantasy Bundesliga - A beginner's guide 4

Rather than captains, Fantasy Bundesliga bosses nominate three ‘star players’ (one each for defence, midfield and attack) that earn them 1.5 times the points they would usually get.

These too are changeable once the matchday has commenced, making this a more hands-on, Sky-type game than FPL.

SCORING SYSTEM

Fantasy Bundesliga’s scoring system is almost a mish-mash of FPL, FanTeam and Sky Sports:

  • Points are awarded for appearances, goals, assists, saves and the rest, although they differ in a number of ways: defenders are awarded more points for assists (five) than midfielders (four) and forwards (three), for instance.
  • There are stricter punishments for straight red cards, own-goals and missed penalties, while those players converting spot-kicks aren’t handed as many points as if they had scored from open play.
  • Eschewing the type of Bonus Points System that we see in FPL, additional points are instead awarded for contributions such as duels, shots, key passes, multiple goals and winning strikes.
  • Players who are on a winning team gain an extra point, with those on the losing side similarly losing a mark.
  • As well as goalkeepers and defenders being punished for every goal they concede, Fantasy assets whose side lose by three or more goals are deducted an extra two points.
  • Assists are treated more stringently, meanwhile, and are not awarded to players who are fouled for converted free-kicks or penalties, force an own-goal or see their blocked shot rebound to a teammate.

Good choice to start the season with - Rashford out, CL not starting for a while, good fixtures. Over time I'd expect to see him play fewer and fewer minutes as age catches up.

Possibly, but it’s his reading of the game and movement that gets him his goals, not pace.

Fine at first but gets injured often and will have minutes managed from early in the season probably. Also see when he gets back in training in terms of starting the first game.

What is the situation with Martial and even Lingard? Add Greenwood to the mix. I am everything but certain that he is even certain starter. Ole might use him as an impact sub and try to develope and start younger players (Greenwood) in easier fixtures. Why wouldn't he do that?

I don't like Cavani at 8.5 with 7.5 options like Antonio, Nacho, Watkins, Wilson. Especially with Greenwood who can start as striker or get subbed on after 50-60 minutes.

Greenwood Martial Cavani all could start as strikers.
      That's the only concern.
      Top choice otherwise

If he was fit for the full season Man Utd would win the league - unfortunately he's coming 35 in February so 30+ starts is a *BIG* ask from him

My setup is actually not to far off yours:

      Sanchez
      TAA Digne Shaw
      Salah Havertz Jota Buendia
      DCL Watkins Antonio

      Begovic White Veltman Brownhill

I have left 1.5m in the bank for Havertz-> Son for GW2 and riding the first two fixtures with Jota for a swap too Raphina allowing me to deal with my two Villa players before their change in fixture.

I can see Cavani and Mahrez(if you do opt to transfer for Havertz GW2) being a bit of a risk that may affect your trading to play the early fixtures in other areas of your team.

Are you seeing this as a risk worth taking with a wildcard at front of mind?

Minefield? It would be fun to have nailed Ars def with attacking threat, but I guess Ben White at 4.5 is the one to get. I expect him to keep more clean sheets than Fofana will.

With Smith-Rowe having been given the no.10 shirt, and appearing to have nailed a spot in the starting 11, a price of 5.5m seems an absolute gift.

Is it just the Chelsea & Man City fixtures putting people off?

I like him and think he will prove decent value at 5.5 if he is their main playmaker in a side which should see limited rotation with no European distractions. Happy to play GW1 and bench GW2 and 3 but he is an easy transfer in in GW4 if you want to wait and see

But i think he passed the eye test last season. He is Young and was eased into the 11. Ødegaard is gone and he has the number 10shirt. Villa bid 30m and arsenal need money, they didnt sell..

When it comes to a gamble, i think you cant get a smaller one than ESR.

Not interested to start with him because if the early fixtures.
I have a lot of doubts on how Arsenal setup this season.
      Saka/ Pepe for RW.
      Auba at ST or LW?
ESR will play CAM, but his role and responsibilities will also change based on the players around him. Wait and see for me.

Arsenal are still looking to sign an alternative playmaker - probably one with more experience.
I like ESR as a pick, but watch this space as his minutes may be limited if Arsenal get someone else quality.

I like a more flexiable squad. When going with only one player above 10m it can be a hassle to get the likes of Bruno and Kdb.

Mount and Maddison i think there are better options.

My BruNO team. It looks good but not flexible at all. Feel all of these players will start but maybe not keep their place or get reduced minutes.

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Coufal
    Salah Son Jota Buendia
    Cavani Toney Antonio

    Gunn ESR White Ait-Nouri

Not sure to start ESR or Toney in first game.

Utter heresy here, but for the opening fixtures, a Power Back 5 of TAA, Robbo, Shaw, AWB and Digne doesn't half look enticing.

I toy with the idea every year. Here is my argument.
You are stuck with the defenders and it costs 2 to 3 transfers each time they are no good.
You need a couple of non starters like Shaw and you are in the dwang.
Having 4.5's in attack are a waste of space. At least you can recover points with defenders at that price point.
Going against the grain can pay but there is a far worse scenario if it does not.
You will inevitably want a mid or forward that is performing. But you will be stuck.
Go template with a fair spread of funds is my advice.

It's a strictly short-term plan with positive fixtures. I'd WC out of it GW7 at the latest before Liverpool and United square up - more likely post 1st Inty Break GW4.
It gives me a midfield of Salah, Bruno and Mahrez with 2 up top, Toney and Welbeck (I know, but those fixtures!)
Dallas (or ESR) first sub isn't too shabby either.

I know. Season before last, wasn't it? Gotta go right some time, no????
You inspired me to go even more extreme now - 2x4.5 forwards gives me a 5-4-1 with Harrison starting and Dallas first sub.

Although I get the appeal, there's one key reason that puts me off.

Early in the season, it tends to be the in-form mids & forwards that rocket in price. In order to build decent squad value, you'll want to be able to move for those players as they emerge. Having so much many in defence severely limits your options in this regard.

That's a point I hadn't considered actually. I think I'll still prioritise points over prices, but I can see when I WC to get Kane etc in, I might have to take a 4.5 defender over a 5.5 for that reason.

I quite like this idea but I slightly prefer a 4-3-3 with a 6.5 mid instead of Mahrez & DCL,Toney & Watkins up front.

      Sanchez
      TAA Robbo Cancelo Digne Shaw
      Salah Mahrez
      Watkins Wilson Antonio

      Harrison Brownhill Gilmour
1M for Mahrez to Sancho/Son incase

Harrison is a good cover for a Man City benching.

    Thoughts?
Been playing for several years now. Best finish was 9297 overall with my normal ranging between 200-400 thousand.
Last season was my worst by far, and I am a player who is prone to taking far to many hits in any given season.
I'm starting off with what I believe is a balanced team, forcing me into managing over taking hits.

    Sanchez/Guaita
    Tierney/Targett/Alexander-Arnord/Femenia/Cresswell
    Buendia/Mount/Raphinha/Salah/Bowen
    Watkins/Bamford/Cavani

    Cheers

Hey Crusher...might be an idea to just stick to one 4.5m keeper and also get a 4.5m mf in there and then spread the 1m saved on the rest.

        That is my normal approach.
Adding keepers 2 x 4.5 was more of an after thought and I am always eyeing that extra .5 to help if/where it can.

Personally I’ve been burned by players who are either newly promoted or new to the league so I will wait and see on Toney. If he’s great he’s easier to get in. If he flops theres’s not a lot else around his price point so it probably needs 2 transfers.

I don’t see any reason that Raphinha can’t continue at his points per match level from last season as he didn’t particularly overperform. If he does that you are looking at a 165ish player for 6.5m which is season keeper levels of value - or at least I think it is.

There were only 5 forwards who scored 165+ last year, so my basic doubt is that Toney - who is new to the league and playing in the team that came up through the playoffs - can become one of them. Even though he does look like a great player/has pens etc.

He might smash it - but on the info available now I think the safest bet is to stick with the more proven Raphinha.

    I think I've settled on my team. Let me know your thoughts;

    Martinez

    TAA - Robertson - Dias - Veltman - Ayling
    Salah - Mahrez - Buendia - Soucek - ESR
    Antonio - Watkins - Toney

Wanted to get players at various price points and keep the balance, whilst maintaining a squad's worth of players.
