Set Piece Takers

Which FPL players were on set-piece taking duties and penalties in Gameweek 1?

Our Set Piece Takers tab details the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players responsible for corners, free-kicks and penalties at their respective clubs.

The table had its first refresh of the 2021/22 season following the completion of Gameweek 1, with the headline news in the article below.

PENALTIES

Which FPL players were on set-piece taking duties and penalties in Gameweek 1?

There were just two penalties awarded on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, with Aston Villa and West Ham United handed the chance to score from 12 yards in their respective games.

The situation remains a tad unclear at both clubs.

Danny Ings (£8.0m) stepped up to take Villa’s effort late on in the 3-2 defeat to Watford but Anwar El Ghazi (£6.0m), who established himself as the Villans’ first choice in 2020/21, has already been substituted.

Mark Noble (£4.5m) has been first in line for West Ham for some time but pitch-time is increasingly scarce for the veteran midfielder, so whoever is the deputy for David Moyes’s side is crucial.

Declan Rice (£5.0m) and loanee Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) had both taken two spot-kicks in Noble’s absence last season but it was Michail Antonio (£7.5m), with Rice on the pitch, who took charge when the Hammers were awarded a penalty at Newcastle United on Sunday; his miss further clouding the picture.

DIRECT FREE-KICKS

Above: A Custom Stats table taken from the Premium Members Area

Many of the usual suspects are present above, having been high up the pecking order for free-kicks last season.

Villa summer signiing Leon Bailey (£6.5m) is a name to note, however, having taken his side’s only direct free-kick on Saturday.

A lot of the familiar dead-ball specialists were again on corner-taking duties in Gameweek 1, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Son Heung-min (£10.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Luke Shaw (£5.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m), Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Mason Mount (£7.5m), Ashley Westwood (£5.5m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) all present in the above table.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m) seems to have more of a stronghold at Everton, meanwhile, with Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.0m) and James Rodriguez (£7.0m) out of the picture on Saturday and their futures uncertain.

On budget asset watch, Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m), in for the injured Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), took seven of Liverpool’s 11 corner-kicks on Saturday evening.

Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) delivered two of Norwich’s three corners, while Jairo Riedewald (£5.0m) also carried on where he left off in pre-season and was at the front of the queue for Crystal Palace – although Eberechi Eze (£6.0m) and Luka Milivojevic (£5.5m) were sidelined.

Matt Ritchie (£5.0m), newly classified as an FPL defender, was again first in line for Newcastle United, while Luke Thomas (£4.5m) shared responsibility with Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) at Leicester as James Maddison (£7.0m) was again overlooked.

Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m) was straight into the thick of the action for Villa, meanwhile, taking three of their four corners.

In the absence of Mathias Jensen (£5.0m), Brentford’s primary taker of set pieces in 2020/21, Sergi Canos (£5.5m) was handed corner-taking duties for the Bees at home to Arsenal.

  2. GW1 Observations

A few thoughts on GW1 as a whole. Very small sample sizes disclaimer.

    - The big takeaway for me is that home advantage is back. 7 out of 10 home teams won. I would personally categorise 4 of the 10 results this GW as surprising or unexpected to some degree: Utd putting 5 past Leeds, Brentford 2-0 Arsenal, Watford 3-2 Villa and Spurs 1-0 City. These were all home wins. Of the 3 away wins, two were widely expected (West Ham and Liverpool wins) and Brighton's win over Burnley was not a shock either.

    - The average goals scored in PL game is apparently 2.72. This was exceeded in 7 of 10 matches and this GW had a average of 3.4 goals per game. I'm interested to see if a pattern emerges that the opening weeks will be more high scoring than average.

    - 21 goals scored at home, 13 goals scored away. 4 home CS (Spurs, Brentford, Leicester, Chelsea) and 1 away CS (Liverpool).

    - There were 14 double figure returns for FPL players this week. 11 of those were for home players, 3 for away (Salah, Antonio, Benhrama). All 5 defensive double digit hauls were for home players.

    - To a large extent, the better/top half teams did well. Chelsea beating Palace and Liverpool beating Norwich had much more to do with the gulf in quality as opposed to whether it was home or away. But when two opposing teams are reasonably evenly matched, home advantage should definitely be a factor worth considering at both ends of the pitch.

A few observations from what I noticed about certain teams.

    - Brighton perhaps unlucky not to CS, some refs would have disallowed Tarkowski's goal.
    - Tierney and ESR stood out for an otherwise poor Arsenal side. Brentford look like a team who could benefit from home advantage the most.
    - Spurs could be a tougher fixture for top sides. Nuno's Wolves had very good record against top 6 teams and the way Spurs set up to counter was quite impressive. It will be interesting to see of they will struggle to create against lesser opposition. Ferran Torres was ineffective in false 9 role for City.
    - West Ham with their strongest 11 are a top 6 side at least. Soucek was bombing forward and getting into dangerous positions more than ever. They will need reinforcements to deal with Europa though. Antonio missed pen potentially muddies the water in terms of pen taker for Hammers going forward.
    - As anticipated, Everton are sending in plenty of crosses to DCL and Rich. Expect plenty of headed goals for Everton this season.

Team to watch: Wolves looked surprisingly promising in defeat to Leicester. A team to monitor before their fixture turn in GW4.

Player to watchlist: Tierney once fixtures turn in GW4.
Differential: Dele Alli for the next 3 as I anticipate Spurs may look to him for creativity against weaker opposition.

If I may add from the games I watched -
GW was on the right corners for Manu. He slipped off to the side , letting Pogba/Bruno getting into the middle.
Moura and Berg will get few goals if spurs continue to play counter attack football (Moura put his A class dribbling yesterday).
Newcastle can’t defend, was so open..
Traroe (Wolves) an interesting prospect as he got into dangoures areas, but couldn’t convert.

Utd putting 5 past Leeds categorised as unexpected or surprising? Yeah not sure about that lol.

I also expect Antonio to stay on pens. He doesn't strike me as a lad who lacks the confidence to step up for the next one.

Obviously a lot of personal opinion involved, but I don't think many people expected United to score 5 vs Leeds. Most predictions I saw had it 1-1 or 2-1 Man United. Lots of talk over the last few weeks about how Leeds was a potential tough fixture for Man United given their disrupted pre-season and Leeds more defensive approach. Obviously Man United can be lethal on their day going forward so it wasn't a complete shock by any means.

If refs are going to let things go like they did at the weekend Man City attackers looked lightweight against a physical Spurs.

Good point, I hadn't thought of this actually. City attackers all quite lightweight and they do lack a physical presence at times. All the more reason they are trying to get Kane I guess.

Was a little surprised Bruno was off corners, wonder if it was a one game thing or part of the plan with their new set-piece coach. Certainly doesn't harm Salah to be in and around the box for any rebounds or clearances.

I just mean I found it odd that being such a good corner taker that he didn't take any against Leeds. Salah tends to just hang around the box (not being a threat aerially) but it works well for him waiting for rebounds or poor clearances to fall his way (like his goal against Norwich)

Fernandes XGi last gameweek was better than Salah, and both were playing attacking teams.

For me it's Salah, and it's not really a debate in my mind.

Home game against an awful side. I don't really put much stock in history vs specific teams. Given a coinflip situation between Bruno and Salah (similar strength opposition etc) - I'm always going Salah, but Bruno's results do speak for themselves so he's definitely viable.

It's a tough one to call really. The flip side of that I would say Salah is playing in front of a packed Anfield for the 1st time in a long time, Bruno is going away vs a team that lost its 1st match.

Its probably been discussed but the Gundo injury is a problem, it always hurts more when your pick blanks and gets injured and the other picks you had in a number of drafts like Greenwood, Jota and Benrahma for example all get in the points. Also picked Barnes over these other options too, oh well..

I've a feeling Gundo misses the next game anyway even if its not a bad injury as more a precaution and i dont want to sleep on making a move to another asset.

What are you other Gundo owners planning to do with him if his playtime likes unlikely?

I had Grealish and Raphinha, both 1 pointers. Obviously holding both, if Grealish starts versus Norwich, and KDB plays, I can see him making up for it.

I'm waiting to hear the results of the scan. I would love him for NOR. So happy to wait.

Also I looked into the theory that he's worse when he plays with KDB, and he's not, I think it's a myth. I looked at the period post the tactical shift after the West Brom draw and before the end of season cup rotation started. Returns were similar with and without, and he was still getting forward with KDB on the pitch yesterday.

Fingers crossed it was just a little knock and he woke up fine.

Blank and injury doubt really threw my plan for saving a FT. I was thinking of maybe Gundo to Sarr or Greenwood, but kneejerked to Pogba last night. Just think when he is in the mood he is a good option and maybe that form will last for a few weeks. Doubt he'll replicate his haul on Saturday, but he's got decent fixtures. I'm probably going to do an early WC so don't mind it as a punt on a 7.5 mid.

Pogba always does well when he plays RW but Ole usually only plays him there against the attacking teams. Against the low blocks he likes him in the pivot. You should be good for the Saints game but after then he's at risk of sinking a bit deeper imo. Going to pass on him myself.

Same for me, Barnes and Gundo my picks in the mid mid category.

Greenwood would be clear best option if it wasn't for Cavani lurking. I'll likely go for Benrahama but also considering Raph and Sarr just about in the picture.

Thinking of Pogba while he is on a high. Hoping he hits a good run of form. Good differential and can haul big on his day.

Greenwood is option 2 but not certain with Cavani, Sancho and Martial all lurking.

Yeah I remember watching him for Middlesbrough a number of times and he was awful, I couldn't believe Wolves bought him when they did. It's more that he gets a fair few decent chances rather than average ones though that even with his poor finishing I'd still expect more than that

    Harrison - Tsmikas - Bowen

Tough to say now that Lukaku joined as well, but Tuchel recently stated that he might play 2 up top. But very hard to say, I stayed away from Chelsea attack because rotation risks.

Well the whole appeal for me was him playing upfront. With Lukaku in he will play on the wing or behind the striker. Not as appealing.

I think he just needed the rest after the 120 mins, he ended last season really well and sounds like Tuchel will try varying their formation a bit with Lukaku there to maybe play someone up top with him so I'd hold. Especially against an Arsenal side that looked abysmal

How did Spurs play defensively yesterday? Didn't have time to watch the game.

Do we expect them to be more compact and hence more cleanies? Also who is their best defender to get?

    1) Dier
    2) Sanchez
    3) Regulion
    4) Doherty

How did Alli fare on his return?

    1. JBG
      • 5 Years

Reguilon probably the best pick, since he can actually get some attacking returns. Doherty will probably rotate with Tanganga.

We defended well but realistically could have conceded once or twice

City as usual against us we’re wasteful in front of goal and we rode our luck in the first 15 minutes

The defence looks good though, Sanchez was great, could be the season he comes of age with Romero alongside him but not sure what the preferred central 2 will be or if nuno will switch to wing backs

Alli did little as Spurs were usually dribbling from deep to break the lines and Alli was often quite far behind the action. Might do well in games where Spurs are a bit more dominant.

Well, you're the one who went out of your way to make a point, or try to make a point at least.

You did not prepare well if you are going to use your WC in gw2 mate.

Either way use it when you need it most.

I didn’t have him either and took -4 to bring him. Way too early for WC imo

If we knew Antonio would stay fit all season and start all 38 games, how many goals would you expect him to score?

Numbers say it would be 18ish, but this doesn't factor in that if he didn't get injured he'd never have to worry about recovery etc so could push it to 22

        He's a 1 in 2.

For me, he's the best striker in the game (if fit) when value is taken into account.

In a hypothetical situation where it was the starting 11 for West Ham playing every week and they had no Europa, I would say 18-20 goals for Antonio. About a goal every 2nd game on average.

Is Mane really worth 12m though?
