Benrahma, Barnes, Pogba: Who are the best mid-price midfielders for GW3?

With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers desperately trying to squeeze in as many premium assets into their teams as possible, like Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m), Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m), finding the right mid-price options will be key.

So, we asked the Scout Network for their view on the best mid-price midfielders to own.

FPL Nymfria

Vestergaard injury latest as Antonio and Benrahma haul again 2

In the opening two Gameweeks Said Benrahma (£6.2m) had five goal attempts and three shots in the box, which produced two goals and two assists. As a result, he has the attention of many FPL managers, and has already risen in price twice since the season started. Although there is a lot of talk about international duty right now, and Benrahma could be affected by this, he plays Crystal Palace and Southampton in the next two Gameweeks which strengthens his appeal.

Diego Jota (£7.6m) also continues to get my attention. With four shots in the box resulting in two goals in the last two Gameweeks he has started the season well. If he continues to get game time, I think he’ll be a top scorer this season.

Kingfut

Mason Greenwood (£7.6m) would be my first choice at this price point. The fact he can be utilised on the right or through the centre makes him a lot less rotation prone compared to the likes of Jota for the same price. With Marcus Rashford‘s (£9.4m) extensive layoff and Anthony Martial‘s (£7.9m) underwhelming performances, I don’t see the United starlet leaving my team anytime soon.

Raphinha (£6.5m) looks set to build on his debut season following his weekend strike at Elland Road. A proven asset in the league and one of the talismans of an exciting Leeds United team, who feels like an absolute bargain. However, I would keep an eye on the potential quarantine situation ahead of Gameweek 4 when he returns from international duty with Brazil.

FF Titans

FPL Gameweek 1: Pogba's assists, van Dijk's return and a start for £4.0m Tsimikas

Paul Pogba (£7.7m) has really impressed over his first two games for Manchester United and can be backed as a season keeper. Under Ole, he is nailed on to start and hardly miss any games when fit. Statistically, he ranks top of all midfielders in this price bracket in assists (five) and attempted assists (six). He also ranks highly in terms of shots taken and expected assists (xA). With favourable home games against Newcastle and Aston Villa coming up after the break, he is our number one pick.

Raphinha opened his account in Gameweek 2 and played a prominent role in Leeds’ draw against Everton. He also took the most shots among all the midfielders in this price range and plays in a very attacking role for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. He also takes corners and freekicks. At his current price range, he remains a good enabler, freeing up cash for very expensive (and ‘must have’) assets like Lukaku in weeks to come.

FPL Experiment Podcast

Seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar reviews the key statistics from Gameweek 1 1

One of the key aspects of this game is exploiting the fixtures. And again, we’re focusing on the opposition and this time targeting a leaky Norwich defence. Leicester have so far played a defensive Wolves side and struggled with only 10-men against a strong West Ham team. We’re expecting them to return to their expansive best against the Canaries and we’re bullish on Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) for this one. He was in great form in pre-season, he’s had a couple of games to pick up his match sharpness after his injury and this feels like a fixture where he can explode!

Greyhead

Mason Mount (£7.5m), yes it’s dull but there is nothing more reliable than Mount’s steady flow of points in a Chelsea side looking like one of the strong contenders to win the title. He plugged away with an assist and clean sheet in the first two games and is a relative certainty in the starting line up. He has a healthy shot count with six so far and he may be one to add to your team and set and forget for the season. Be dull and save yourself the headache.

Paul Pogba, La Pioche, has had storming start to the season and is my pick with five assists already to his name, a favourable run of matches and a swagger that suggests he is in the mood to continue that form. The stats also support the eye test with six chances created, six shots with five of those crucially in the box. Even though he has gone up in price to £7.7 million he still looks a bargain so invest before the Pog-Boom!

FPL Gents (Oscar)

Son injury update as Greenwood scores again and £4.0m defender Livramento impresses 4

My number one pick is Wolves’ Adama Traoré (£6.0m). He is extremely under the radar in just 1.2% of teams and seems to have generated very little buzz, despite the fact that he has had 10 shots in the first two games, generating a non-penalty xG of 1.1 which has only been bettered by Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.1m), Lukaku and Sadio Mané (£11.9m). This is despite facing two decent sides in Leicester and Spurs. Although United at home in Gameweek 3 is another tough test, Wolves’ fixtures turn for the better afterwards, not facing a side from last season’s top five until Gameweek 15.

FPL Froggies

All eyes are currently on Benrahma, and there is also the shadow of Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) on the London Stadium, but the eye test tells us that Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) is also in great shape and that returns could be around the corner. He’s explosive, aggressive and can be selfish when needed, so we feel it will come soon.

We also like Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m). He has skills, experience, plays out-of-position, may be on penalties and is without a doubt the best player at Crystal Palace. At 7.0m, it might not be a bad idea to bet on Zaha, even if we are still unsure about Patrick Vieira’s style of play. It’s a high risk, high reward bet, but if you play FPL with an aggressive style, it’s the type of decision that could make a difference.”

Anyone know if Ait Nouri is likely to break into the wolves team anytime soon? Could be gold when their fixtures turn at 4.4m

Think he will eventually replace Macal at LSB...on my watchlist but Semedo probably safer and could be good and very attacking this season

Why would he replace Marcal? Marcal has started all preseason games as well as the first 2. Marcal is an experienced player who has CL experience.

If he stays fit and in good form perhaps not...but I do think RAN is the better player myself and needs game time to unleash his potential so could get his chance sooner rather than later.

Lukaku is not a better option in GW3 than those three you have (and I have) up top. Happy to wait but not fully ruling out wildcarding during the IB and getting him in for Villa which could be a very good fixture for him.

    Tuesday night EFL Cup thoughts:

The chasm between the Premier League and the rest is ridiculous. Even the worst PL sides can put out full B-sides and slaughter clubs below them.

Norwich concede 5 in Pl, reserves score 6 in EFL.
Wolves main strikers can't hit a barn door, reserves score 4
    Villa's reserves bag 6

So to answer Dthinger above, no, it's meaningless.

Yes, probably would do the same now. Couldn't care less about price changes, once a player you have to take a price drop and get returns on Saturday, casuals will usually get pick them right back on their squad

It hasn't risen despite being near and over 100. His price should have risen with the amount of transfers in but it has not.

Did read somewhere that sometimes a players price is locked when it can't drop or rise for a period of time (injury, transfer etc)

Not locked, but I was monitoring fplstatistics last night and it was tweaked a few times. As soon as players hit 100% for a price rise, they were knocked back down again and only Regulion survived. There were others like Lukaku - Amartey for one who were on 100% before being reduced. My guess is they will rise before the deadline anyway.

        1. Jafalad
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 7 months ago

          Definitely.

Greenwood's underlying stats such as shots in the box are pretty poor. Against STH he got put out on the wing. Then you have gametime concerns when the likes of Cavani come back.

Grealish - I watched the CTY/NOR game and again, he's out on the wing and no real goal threat.

Raphinha is 6.5 and cheaper than the other two. This is important when we are trying to fit all these heavy hitters in our squads.

With 1 FT do I make the move now, or do I hold over the IB and then make the move which will also allow me to go Toney to Jiminez?

There is nothing obvious about it, imo. Yes he's is currently the top scoring mid and nicely priced but they're not the only two factors, it has only been two matches after all.

Easy question is do you think he will match or exceed Grealish, if yes then the answer is an easy one and I do like the idea of Toney to Jimenez tbf.

Personally I would hold off for now and take the two FTs into the IB.

I don't know if he outscores Grealish this week, to be honest. Think that's why I'm hesitant on the move. Betting odds currently have Grealish better odds to score anytime for what that's worth.

Fear obviously is my ML and falling further off the lead (20 points back), as everyone has or is jumping on Buendia now.

The 2 FT's I agree are beneficial over the break, when other issues may arise.

        FOMO is real, lol.

I wouldn't mind betting odds so much. They'll often favour probably nearly any winger or striker to score over someone like Benrahma regardless of form because it's City, they're expected to win nearly every game and often comfortably so the odds for those players returning will be low. Even with the likelihood of Jesus being rotated or playing wide and the same for Torres I'd say the same applies to them even though for goalscoring they have no current form, for example, and even for players that have barely played or hardly ever feature they'll be there as they'll base that off the possibility that each player starts the game in the optimum position to minimise losses. I just checked and saw with PP that Palmer, Gundogan and Bernardo are at smaller odds to score than Lacazette and Auba. City are 1/5 to beat Arsenal while West Ham, even considering their form and Palace's, are over double that at 8/15.

Well I have done Toney, Gundog and Barnes out for DCL, Benrahma and Raphinha this week. Looking at the transfers in for Benny, I think this transfer needs to be made sooner rather than later.

Yes I have DCL and Raphinha.

As I said everyone is making the move now, hard to tell if it's been a two week fluke or if he's the real deal.

He's a getting a lot of touches in the final third if that helps. I had a look at some of his data yesterday and he shows up pretty well tbh. I was sceptical last week but look at the bigger picture and the way WHM play.

Everyone making moves now run the risk of being caught short in the international chaos. There's a couple of moves I'd like to do myself, but I think it more important to come out of the Break with 2FT, even at the cost of a potential couple of points.

He got an hour in his legs last night. Should be ready after the Inty Break. Lord knows, Wolves just someone who can put the ball in the net, and he's cheaper than the fancied Traore and Jmenez.

Could I suggest an article topic for discussion by our venerable experts:

The price change approach seems to be different this season with far more players dropping in price compared to past seasons.

Is this true - and if so - how did it change and how does that impact team planning?

    Thanks in advance

I'm not sure anything has changed algorithm-wise. What happens is off-template picks that prove duds are quickly abandoned for the few bandwagons that start rolling. An awful lot of low-owned budget midfielders will have been jettisoned for Benrahma, for instance.

It only impacts team planning if you're one of the sheep. For example, many started with White knowing Arsenal faced Chelsea and City in GWs2-3. He shouldn't have been expected to start accumulating points until after now and should have been fine parked on the bench. And yet hordes are ditching him before their fixtures turn. Similar with all the people jumping off Shaw although his price hasn't fallen. If you think for yourself and pick players you think will do well regardless of rising or falling in price by 0.1, it shouldn't be of any real concern.

In fact, anyone planning a WC in 2 or 3 weeks' time should be relishing those price fallers. There are a good few who simply haven't been fit yet but who will soon nail places and haul. They're there to be had for a discount.

Whats hilarious is that White who was very highly owned has had over 200,000 sales and not dropped in price wheres as Barnes who wasnt as highly owned and has only had 90,000 sales dropped immediately, i dont trust it at all

It's a percentages game. The higher the owners the bigger overall amount need to be transferred out to hit the percentage target required for the price drop.

Oh, sorry, I didn't check the numbers. Wildcards don't count in the algorithm so that might have made a difference. They still count towards the transferred in and out totals though.

    Ayling (Burnley)
    Amartey (Norwich)
    Livramento (Newcastle)

Firstly, who to field as my 3rd defender in GW3?
Secondly, all three players' fixtures swing annoyingly in GW4,

    Ayling (Liverpool)
    Amartey (Man City)
    Southampton (West Ham)

Field one of these players or target an Amartey upgrade (Vestergaard returning), can potentially get to 4.9 with an Ings downgrade,
Options that (could/do) include the likes of Tierney, Semedo & Firpo. Thoughts?

Question: When should serious FPL managers like us start worrying about Overall Rank? If you are ranked high now, does it matter much? If you ranked low, should you be stressing at this point?

    1. ilikewud

From January which is around GW20, any rank before that can be lost as well as it can be recovered. In 2nd half of the season, it gets little bit tricky to improve rank by huge margin.

Not for a long time. I mean, I'm in the Top 1K, but thinking about OR is like Brighton dreaming of winning the PL after 2 games. At this point, it's just nice while it lasts (ie until GW3)

I finished top 10k once. Was hovering around 200k at the start. Worked my way into top 100k in first 10 weeks. Made a big jump into top 10k around Christmas. Slipped out to 50k for the final push. Used all my chips at the end. Smashed it. Finished 3k.

Last year I started at 2 million. Took 10 weeks to break into top million. Was 500k at christmas. Top 100k for final third. Big finish. Ended up 10800 odd.

My point is. If you get it right you move up. Easier early but can still happen later
