How to play UEFA Champions League Fantasy Football 2021/22 – a beginner’s guide

The group stage of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign kicks off on September 14, just after Gameweek 4 in Fantasy Premier League – and the official Fantasy game for Europe’s premier club competition is now live (official game app here).

There are some incredible prizes on offer in this free-to-play Fantasy game, from UEFA Champions League final tickets to Playstation 5s and replica shirts.

And we’ve also launched the official FFScout UCL League (Pin code: 33TKWHOD07), offering you a chance to win extra game round and seasonal prizes beyond the above.

You can launch in right now to start your team tinkering, and unlimited transfers are allowed before play starts.

SIGN UP TO PLAY UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY HERE

We’ll be bringing you more content on this game than ever before, with position-by-position guides over the next week and regular articles to follow when the action commences.

Once again it’s Liverpool, the two Manchester clubs and reigning champions Chelsea as the Premier League representatives amongst the 32 teams involved in this year’s tournament, with the six group stage matchdays all taking place before Christmas and the knockout rounds starting next February.

In this introductory piece, we’ll talk you through the basics of the game.

BRIEF RULES

To summarise the game in one sentence: UCL Fantasy managers get €100m to spend on a squad of 15 players, who earn points based on their on-field performances in the Champions League.

Anyone who has played Fantasy Premier League will have no trouble in picking the game up, as many of the rules are exactly the same or very similar:

  • An initial budget of €100m (which rises to €105m from the last 16 onwards)
  • Pick a squad of 15 players
  • No more than three players from each club (that threshold rises once the knockout stages begin)
  • Select a starting XI in a valid formation for every ‘matchday’ (the UCL equivalent of a ‘Gameweek’, which incorporates both the Tuesday and Wednesday fixtures)
  • Select a captain who earns double points
  • Make free transfers between matchdays

Those are the fundamentals but there are one or two quirks of the game that require a bit of explaining, which we will cover below.

SUBSTITUTIONS

If you prefer the hands-off approach to Fantasy management, auto-subs occur if any of your starting XI fail to feature and there is a playing substitute on your bench – providing that player doesn’t break the formation rules (a minimum of three defenders, two midfielders and one forward).

Where UCL Fantasy differs is that it also gives managers the chance to make manual substitutions instead.

After all matches on a single day (eg Tuesday) have finished and before the next matches within that matchday kick off (eg Wednesday), UCL Fantasy managers can:

  • Replace a maximum of four players (unless they have been sent off), with any of their substitutes whose teams are yet to play within the matchday.
  • Change their captain to another player from their squad whose team is yet to play. The original captain’s double points will be lost and the new captain’s score for that matchday will be doubled.

As an example, say you have selected Mason Greenwood (€8.0m) for Manchester United’s matchday 1 clash with Young Boys on Tuesday 14 September.

If the United forward fails to feature or returns a middling score of, say, two points, you can then replace him with one of your substitutes who is in action on Wednesday 15 September.

TRANSFERS

As we mentioned earlier, free transfers are allowed between matchdays.

Like in Fantasy Premier League, UCL Fantasy managers can roll a maximum of one free transfer – although only in the group stage.

For every transaction you make beyond your quota of free transfers, you’ll take a hit of four points.

The below table details how many moves are allowed at each stage of the competition:

PhaseNumber of free transfers
Before the group stage beginsUnlimited
Matchday 1–62 per matchday
Between Matchday 6 and round of 16 1st legUnlimited
Before round of 16 2nd leg3
Before quarter-final 1st leg5
Before quarter-final 2nd leg3
Before semi-final 1st leg5
Before semi-final 2nd leg3
Before final5

CHIPS
FFScout Head-to-Head Leagues 2020/21 season review

There are two chips available to UCL Fantasy managers: Wildcard and Limitless.

These chips can be used only once per season and, once played, can’t be cancelled.

Wildcard

As in FPL, the Wildcard gives you the chance to change your squad as much as you like. When you play it you can make free unlimited transfers and any players you transfer in will stay in your squad once that matchday has finished.

Limitless

Limitless is the equivalent of FPL’s Free Hit chip and gives managers the chance to change their squad for one matchday only.

Once the matchday has finished, your squad will return to how it was before you played the Limitless chip.

Rather excitingly, there are no budget restrictions when activating Limitless – so, should you wish, you can pack your squad with the most expensive assets in the game.

SCORING SYSTEM

Again, the scoring system is a very familiar one.

Most of the player actions and the points on offer tally with FPL, although there are one or two notable differences.

A goal scored from outside the box gets an additional point, for example, while the acts of winning and conceding a penalty are rewarded and punished respectively.

Players also gain points through ball recoveries, which gives the more defensive-minded players a chance to rack up a tidy score.

Over 40% of Jorginho‘s (€6.0m) 2020/21 points total in UCL Fantasy was made up by recoveries, for example.

We have set up our own mini-league, the details of which are below.

We will be giving away prizes in the form of Premium Memberships, the first batch of which will be dished out to our top five after the group stage has ended – and there will be more to follow when the knockout rounds get underway.

JOIN THE FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT MINI-LEAGUE HERE

Select ‘Leagues’, ‘Join a League’ and enter the following code: 33TKWHOD07

A full prize breakdown is coming soon but the giveaways will include Amazon vouchers and Fantasy Football Scout Premium Memberships.

Global leagues

Your team will be automatically included in the following leagues:

  • The overall leaderboard with all other players around the world

So...I think I can't ever get tired of talking about English or European football, fantasy or otherwise. I just love the game. Appreciate your comments and indulgences. A bit of light in a dark tunnel, as it were. Cheers.

Who scores more over the next few weeks, best option:

    1. Torres Gray(5th mid) Toney (rotate bench Gray Toney)

    2. Raphinha Brownhill(5th mid) DCL (Brownhill likely bench each week)

    Cheers.

Think you’re just as likely to hit as miss the returns if you rotate Toney and Gray. Add in Torres rotation.

      So I’d say B.

    Draft league, starts tomorrow.
Who are the top ten essential picks?

    CR7
    Salah
    Kane
    Lukaku
    Bruno
    Son
    Bamford
    DCL
    TAA
    Greenwood
    Mount?

      Antonio
      One premium goalkeeper
One city attacker (Jesus or kdb)
      Fernandes
Aim to sign best players on poor teams as draft progresses as in draft these can be rewarding, (eg. Sarr, zaha, toney)

    I’ve done Ings to DCL.

Next week will be interesting. I was looking at Bruno and Toney to Raphinha and Lukaku. But Lukaku has two hard fixtures before his dream run in GW7. Would you just get him anyway, or go with Jimenez for a few gameweeks?

I'm still resisting Ings to DCL because of the potential DCL injury. Have got Bruno and Toney as well with 1FT. Still inclined to roll and then take decision next gameweek once IB dust settles.

Yes your right. I’ll wait as long as I can. Wait for pressers and see what Benetiz says. I was just pondering doing it now in case of any price rises for DCL or drops for Ings. Have already made a boring transfer this week. Done Tsimikas to Williams so if I do Ings to DCL it would be a -4. I’m prepared to do that as long as I know he will play v Burnley. I think he will cover or even better the -4.

Yeah I think he’ll be fine. What’s your strategy for the following game week? Are you considering Jimenez?

I’m not at the moment but with Wolves first 3 tough fixtures out the way I will be monitoring him for sure. I’ve had Marcal tucked away on my bench since the beginning ready for gameweek 4 onwards.... Hoping he can match Semedo’s output for 0.5 cheaper basically. Doubt he will but nevertheless I think there’s potential there. Hard to gauge Wolves properly with a new manager and the aforementioned tough fixtures. They didn’t concede many goals in those first 3 games, in fact they were all only 1-nil against good opposition so fingers crossed for some clean sheets and Jiménez goals eh ? Someone’s got to score for them eventually!!! Good luck.

Lukaku this week, Ron the next two weeks, back to Lukaku GW7 … hokey cokey time 😉

Yeah that’s also an option. I have a feeling Jimenez is going to outperform Ronaldo these next couple of weeks. Probably over thinking it 🙂

You're not alone (in overthinking). Here's my take:
Higher chances in my opinion that a mid-priced forward + a premium defender even if other than TAA to outperform Ronaldo/Lukaku + a cheap defender + -4/-8 in the next 2 GWs

      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

..... and to answer your question if it was me I would most probably take a chance to try to get ahead of the curve and put Jiménez in for 3 weeks. Then in gameweek 7 you’ll know how he is performing and can then decide whether to leave him in as well as getting Lukaku or simply change him for Lukaku if he’s not happening for him. Good luck

It seems unlikely but if DCL happens to be out for Burnley I’ll probably just take a chance and do Ings to Jimmy and wait for DCL to be fit again.

      Pretty damn good actually

Ronnie might not be essential before GW16 so Kane + 0.2 might be better

Kane over Ronaldo might not lose you much, if anything, and you'd be able to downgrade Son for a better overall midfield. And/or keep some cash for when Antonio pulls his hammy and you want him DCL instead

think I am going to roll with Gilmour and Allan and rotate with a defender in a 433 or 343

So every week I have to play two of White, Ayling, Coady, Allan & Gilmour … not so bad really

WC defence is TAA Shaw Regulion Coady Livramento. But I’ll want Chelsea and Man City defence long term.

Is it worth doing Regulion > Cancelo & Coady > Williams.

That’ll leave me to do Shaw > James GW7.

Yeah, Adama and Gray are probably the weak links.

I’m sure that’s where I’ll be making most of my transfers, but there will be some decent bandwagons to jump on at those prices I’m sure.

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 8 Years

i think you are better off with Raphina, Dan James or a WHU mid at that price

I owned both Reguilon and Coufal last season and they were very frustrating, especially Reguilon when Ben Davies came in for a clean sheet. TAA, Coufal and 3 x 4.5 for me

          1. The Wanton Trader
            • 6 Years
            2 years, 7 months ago

I was looking at maybe Sanchez and Raphinha instead of Sa and Adama and a 4.5 and Fornals instead of Tierney and Gray.

It does mean no Wolfs though.

If I were to take your team and keep the premiums I would turn it into something like this

              TAA / Coufal / 4.5
              Salah / Jota / 4.5 / Raphina
Ronaldo / Lukaku / Toney or better

              Steele / Allan / Livra / Williams

Maybe the likes of Dan James or Benrahma/WHU in there if affordable

I just feel squeezing Trent in there is a bit of a push.

I have to sacrifice him to get the big 3 even though it pains me.

Again, if for any reason is doesn’t work out, it’s easily rectified with a couple of frees.

      42 cleansheets
      37 assists

If you don't own CR7 or Lukaku (which I don't), surely Bruno is still a good captaincy option this week? I know he's blanked in the last 2, but he's not suddenly going to turn into Fred at home to a comedy defence even if he does lose pens.

    1. Fabreghastly
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

The issue is to what extent CR7 will take goals, assists and bonus away from Bruno. A lot of people think Bruno's haulage potential is reduced by CR7 being in the team rather than enhanced

Tbf, there's risk with both Bruno and CR, as we don't know how the new dynamic will be.

Who's on pens? How much will CR play, with 2 games per week? How will the presence of CR impact Bruno's (and others') assist and goal potential?

I think I'll stick with Bruno a few more weeks, before WC into Chelsea-heavy team with no Utd-players gw7/8. Then I'll see how the setup works, across a very challenging run of games for Utd, and decide on whether CR can justify 12.5 through that period.

I've been having a dig into defensive stats to see if the faith being shown in the Arsenal defence is justified. Optimists are seeing value, Pessimists a shambles we should steer clear of.

Leno has saved exactly half of the big chances Arsenal have conceded. Top half stat, though not unusually good.

But in the next 10, Leno faces only 3 teams who have created more than 1 big chance per game. 5, like Arsenal, less than 1 per game.

That sounds like a good chance of a CS in 70% of games assuming Arsenal are at their worst. With their backs against the wall and 1st team players coming back, the Optimists may be on to something

He is still a bargain. It really makes no sense to sell a starting defender at that price. Arsenal are still a mid table team at worst.

My plan is to monitor Arsenal for a couple of weeks, expecting improvement. The intention is to bring White in for Duffy. The problem isn't Arsenal - it's Duffy who nutted in yet another goal last night, making it damn hard to justify getting rid of him!

its based on % change. he was owned by nearly 10% of the comp, so needs 10x the transfers out of the fringe 1% owned who have dropped. he's only about 40% of the way there to a price drop.
Also remember this gameweek so many people are using their wildcards. Gut instinct tells you many of these are James owners as compared to fringe players. Wildcard transfers do not count towards price changes

He's only out for one game. If I owned him, I'd bench him, definitely not sell.
