Raphinha, Jesus, Firmino and more Brazil players may miss FPL Gameweek 4

Eight more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players could be stopped from featuring in Gameweek 4.

Raphinha (£6.5m), Fabinho (£5.4m), Roberto Firmino (£8.8m), Alisson (£6.0m), Ederson (£6.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m), Thiago Silva (£5.4m) and Fred (£5.0m) may all miss out this weekend as a consequence of their non-involvement with Brazil over the international break.

That’s because, under FIFA law, players not released to their respective countries can be banned for five days after the international window ends – and that period spans September 10-14 in this case, which includes Gameweek 4.

Those sanctions will only occur if a national football association requests FIFA to invoke them, something the Brazilian FA have done this afternoon.

Curiously, though, the BBC reports that Brazil have not asked for Everton’s Richarlison (£7.5m) to be prevented from featuring against Burnley on Monday night in an act of goodwill, as the Toffees previously allowed their forward to be called up for Olympic Games duties when not obliged to do so.

The football federations of Mexico, Paraguay and Chile have also asked for punishment to be meted out, meaning that Raul Jimenez (£7.4m), Miguel Almiron (£5.4m) and Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m) may not be allowed to play this weekend.

We’ve yet to have an official response from the Premier League or the clubs affected, and we’ll bring you more news on this as and when we get it.

Anyone travelling to a red-list country faces quarantine for 10 full days in a managed hotel on their return to the UK, and Premier League players are no exception.

As far as we’re aware, there are only five such FPL assets that fall into this category in the September international break.

Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m), Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m), Giovani Lo Celso (£5.9m) and Cristian Romero (£4.9m) had all previously been given permission by their clubs to head to South America and all of them will miss Gameweek 4 as a result.

The quintet are available for their countries’ first two World Cup qualifying matches but will not take part in the third international fixture – meaning that their quarantine periods will have ended by the time Gameweek 5 comes around.

So, this is good news for Jota. I think I’ll bring him in, although the fact that Firmino is being caught up in this makes you led to believe he would have been fit enough to travel.

Anyone know where I can find fantasy match data from previous seasons matches?

Example: who got the bonus pts and how many bonus pts did the players score in the matches between Chelsea and Liverpool last year.

Reports are that the Mexican FA have requested that their players who did not travel are banned for 5 days from the end of the international window. Not confirmed yet though.

Assuming Raphinha is banned & DCL is injured
Thoughts on these moves for -8?

    Out: Tsimikas, Bruno & DCL
    In: Semedo, Jota & Ronaldo

Bench: Raphinha - Ayling - Scarlett

I’m still uncertain, I like the look of Torres long term but concerned for minutes.

Also like the look of Leeds fixtures. Think I’m going to leave Torres in and ditch him if he gets dropped.

Technically they'd have had to quarantine on entry into Brazil anyhow so none of this stacks up or makes sense in the real world.

    1. jason_ni
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Id not be surprised had the Brazilian "health authorities" deemed that Brazilians coming into the country from UK would have been deemed fine without quarantine, but any non Brazilian (ie Argentines) would have needed 14 days from entering the country.

Also, the whole thing with the Argentines going to Croatia first on the way back to the UK to avoid the isolation rules just makes no sense. So what, you land in croatia for 2 days, and now you are ok to enter the UK and not quarantine?!

If that was the case, could they not have done that on the way out to Brazil? There is a lot of bureaucracy going on with this!

      1. Antonionio
        • 4 Years

The Argentines are staying in Croatia for 10 days (missing GW4) to avoid having to isolate when returning to the UK.

The key difference is that for those 10 days in Croatia they can train together, before being able to return to the UK and reintegrate with the rest of the squad. If they came directly back to the UK then they would have to isolate on arrival so would not be able to train (therefore missing GWs 4 + 5 to get back to match fitness).

        1. jason_ni
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 7 months ago

Ok that makes a bit more sense, but even so, them going to croatia, they can train the 4 of them, yes its slightly better than solo training, but could they not be trusted to keep training on their own for the 10 days if they were to come back to the UK in the first place?

From different teams so not likely to be any tactical training in croatia, its just them doing to physical training, nothing they couldn't do on there own, other than it being a bit more fun to have some company while doing it.

With the amount of life-changing money available in top-tier football these days, loyalty means nothing

Any country that finds itself forcing players to choose between 2/4-year-interval trophy chances and the certainty of millions in Europe is in denial, blind, or self-sabotaging. Maybe a combination of those three

They are starting a fight they simply cannot win. Clubs can add certain clauses to player contracts going forward, and the FA's will see if those Maradona and Pele days still exist

I mean, Ronaldo and Messi haven't won the World Cup, but are constantly in the "greatest ever" conversation. It's not even needed for glory anymore

Why? These are the rules. They were known before the international break started. It's not like FIFA have just come up with this out of nowhere.

If Raphina himself made himself unavailable surely Fifa can't force him to play? That would constitute modern slavery. If indeed he did say he'd like to go it is a different matter.

It would need FIFA to back down. If they don't and the clubs play the involved players, then they could be charged with fielding an ineligible player, which has potentially big consequences.

I'd say in this case, they would have needed to have declared the retirement prior to this window, and them getting selected in the squads.

In 2006 or so Claude Makelele retired from the French national team but head coach at the time, Raymond Domenech (aka the flog), called him up anyway. Makelele was facing a two game suspension at Chelsea if he didn't go and play for France. Cut a long story short, Makelele came out of international retirement. I assume the rules have changed since then (?) but that's the way it worked back then........

Since the premier league is a pirate breakaway league outside the FA, can the FA / UEFA / FIFA enforce any penalties? surely not points deductions? wouldn't all they can do be threaten them with penalties in European competitions? Since UEFA and FIFA are at loggerheads, to put it mindly, would UEFA even support FIFA in this? They don't want to be without their stars in the European leagues I'd assume. Just a thought.

    Hi

Would love some feedback as to a wildcard is needed for the below team?

    Bachmann

    TAA | Shaw | Veltman

    Benrahma | Salah | Bruno | Raph | Son

    Toney | Antonio

    Foster / White / Livaremento / Perica

I would have to replace Son with Jota as it looks like Raph is missing GW4 and play 4 4 2 with White in the back 4 as well.

    Many thanks

That's why I'll just roll with it and trust my bench. The missing guys (and that's if PL clubs don't find a way) weren't expected to haul this GW anyway. The main explosive guys this week are Salah, CR7, Lukaku, Kane, Son, Jota, TAA, Antonio, DCL, Greenwood, Shaw, Digne and MAYBE Tierney

The fact that the international players are mostly fit and will be back by GW5 with full team training means the GW4 decision is down to Free Hit or nah, and I choose nah

As of now no Brazilian players have been banned from playing in GW4. Enjoy the sunshine 🙂

Thats the opposite of what the current status is.

      https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58486811

They are all banned(aside from Richarlison), weather the clubs do something about it is the next question.

Premier league is involved as well. I expect it to be overruled or for Richarlson to be ruled out as well.

So if the players are banned why aren't they flagged as unavailable on FPL?
Read the article properly instead of cherry picking sentences to fit your panic fueled agenda.

I've read the article, and yes they have been banned but it's being challenged by the clubs. Nobody knows whether this appeal process will be successful, and as such the players can't be flagged yet. We will know more within the next 24/48hours.

Agree, enjoy the sunshine worry about this sort of stuff on friday.

FPL is not the be all and end all of a players status for upcoming games, fpl status is down to some guy in an office deciding which players to update! And they are probably waiting to see what happens next, as its still early.

          Direct quote from the article

"Eight Premier League players will be stopped from playing for their clubs this weekend after Brazilian football authorities triggered a Fifa rule to prevent them appearing."

          Thats pretty clear.

I read the article, and what I said stands, at the moment they are banned, its up the clubs and PL to reach a work around, and there is no guarantee of that.

Where are you getting that no brazilians have been banned? Are you just basing that on the fact that fpl haven't updated their status?

Have these bans ever been enforced before? Like when a club pretends their player is injured? Or any cases of a club just saying no (pre-covid times).

Only Brazil could cancel a match...proving correct, all their players who didn't travel during Covid...

To then immediately try and sanction those players for not travelling

Were you expecting more than 2 points this week anyway?

I'm just going to let my bench player come on and save the transfer

Not when you look at fixtures from week 5. No big deal losing him for Liverpool
