Who are the best Wolves defenders in FPL for the Gameweek 4 fixture swing?

Having previously focused mostly on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ midfielders and forwards in his first ‘eye test meets stats’ analysis of Bruno Lage’s troops, Stevie of EyeTestFPL switches attention to the club’s defenders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Wolves, in their 3-4-3/back five system seen below, boast one of the meanest defences in the league so far, conceding only 20 shots inside the box (the fifth lowest) despite some tough early fixtures.

With Lage’s outfit about to embark on a long run of great fixtures until Gameweek 14, we will assess some of the best Wolves defensive options in FPL – particularly from an attacking standpoint.

Nelson Semedo (£4.9M)

During offensive phases, Wolves tend to push both of their full-backs, Marcal (£4.5m) and Nelson Semedo (£4.9m), high up the pitch in a 2-3-5 shape.

Such advanced positioning of the full-backs can occasionally lead to offensive turnovers deep in the opposition half as they are expected to press high up the pitch, especially against the weaker teams.

Compared with Marcal, Semedo is arguably the better player on the ball and possesses considerable dribbling ability, which is the reason why he is often tasked with bigger offensive responsibilities.

Above: Touch heatmaps from our Premium Members Area

Based on his touches over the last two Gameweeks, clearly Semedo (above left) is the player given more freedom to roam forward, making six touches inside the box compared to Marcal’s (above right) one.

There is fluidity in the Wolves frontline. Every time there is a player filling in out wide such as Adama Traore (£6.0m) here, Semedo will use the opportunity to make underlapping runs into the penalty area.

Livramento over Duffy for me. Looks great, though I think I'd favour a third playing striker over Sarr.

Sure. Pretty much what plenty of folks seem to be moving towards either with WC or free transfers.

Hard to find much to worry about. Though I don’t trust Spurs defense so would go a Wolves defender over Dier and Brighton bought a new defender and have others coming back from injury, so I’d go Livramento over Duffy.

      Sanchez - Shite pal
      Torres - Rotation Risk
      Greenwood - Rotation Risk
      Sarr - Decent but punty

problem is its a hit to turn Jota/Greenwood into DCL/Bamford. after Mount I dont see a natural replacement.

Also surprised to see Sanchez in so many rmwct's. GuaIta probably a better choice, or find the extra 0.5 for Sá, Meslier, Scmeichel or DDG.

One of the biggest negatives in the WC this week is not knowing what to do with the GKs imo.

Other 13 slots you can move around and follow form/fixtures - no one wants to be using transfers on their keeper.

Fully agree , it's one of these things that has me hesitating hitting the WC button. Trynig to squezze in one of the £5m keepers, means slight downgrades elsewhere ofc, like e.g. Sarr -> Gray

Very true - and 4 goals conceded in those first two games wasn’t encouraging either

But Sierralta back now & they were very stingy defensively in the championship last year only letting in 30 in 46 games…

Particularly at home where they only conceded 12 in 23 games - Be interesting to see how they get on

For those without Twitter - From Sungmo Lee (South Korean journalist)

Update on Son Heung Min's injury : Son looked OK at the airport for his flight back to UK. No KFA official comment on his injury, but it is being said "it's not serious". Whether he can play this weekend or not is still a doubt, but IMO, he is better be rested, if possible.

        This

You can stroll around with a cruciate that’s still months away from being playable, an ankle ligament tear that’s still got a few weeks left to go & lots of other injuries won’t necessarily visually impact a walking gait

But Son is a machine - the section of all or nothing where he seemed to be genuinely trying to cover up his arm injury with the physios just so he could play 😆

Tbf, OP did offer the disclaimer that the tweet was "not at all conclusive." Shared as there has been some interest about updates on Son, and this was at least something.

Alleged suggestions that "it's not serious" relatively more noteworthy than observation that he " looked OK at the airport."

Bruno/Ron will be pretty close I think.

Jimi might miss this week but the next two look good.

I’m going to say the -4 makes the difference and B scores more. But it’s close for me.

I am frustratingly 0.1m away from the following team:

        Bachmann
        TAA / Shaw / Semedo
        Salah / Jota / Torres / Traore
        Ronaldo / DCL / Antonio

        Foster // Livramento / Williams / Allan

        - Still not decided on GK. Sanchez/Bachmann/Raya. (Alternatively 5.0m + White for Semedo.)
        - Still not decided on 4.5m MID, but Allan created a few chances already
        - If I'd clicked WC right away this GW, would have got Torres 0.1m cheaper, damn!

What is the best way to shave off 0.1m?
        A) Shaw > Digne (likely to move either onto James etc. ~GW7)
        B) 4.5m MID --> Mendy (4.4m)
        C) Torres --> Benrahma/Raph/Sarr etc.

Prefer DCL with immediate fixtures. Also leaves option to downgrade later. Harder to upgrade to DCL. Also Jota/Torres likely becoming Raphinha soon.

Wan-Bissaka clearing Trincao’s goal off the line, really has reduced his appeal. I think he’s excellent and looks more likely than Traore, who although looks excellent has done this sort of stuff before.

I’d much prefer Allan than having to go to Mendy also.

Hmm, ‘easy decision’ though. I just don’t get this stance on Traore tbf. The man has missed sitter after sitter. No different to any other season. I get you’re predicted his fortunes will turn, but they never have. Imo Trincao is a slight downgrade, but the best way to get 0.1m that you need. Alternatively you can sack off a Wolves mid and get Gray. Next 3 are excellent, and then two decent ones after United.

Frankly why would you not just get Digne over Shaw in that case? Grey's numbers haven't actually been great & I don't think I'd keep him. Digne's fixtures are the same - added chance of CS points & it fits my planned sale in GW7 anyway.

That way I can keep Traore for a bit whose fixtures are good for a while.

I'm not ruling it out FYI - just giving an argument. Ronaldo coming is good but Shaw hasn't been fab these first three.

I assume BennyR is Benrahma? Not really that obvious.

I like it. Pretty similar to one of my earlier drafts minus a few tweaks. If Ederson is, indeed, banned, Dias might become a Man United defender, but solid even as is.

I like that you’ve gone with Armstrong as the 3rd fwd to give you more funds elsewhere. Better balance than trying to get DCL in that slot like lots are.

            Good looking team to me.

Why Sissoko. Seems way to risky, as he’s only played one game (against his old club, so motivation to pick him), plays for a teams that rotates often. 4.5m mid calls for a safe, reliable option. Imo Sissoko does not yet fulfil this criteria.

I think he has more upside than the other 4.5 mids. Lets be honest its not going to make or break your team....they'll all probably average around 2points per game

It's the same as with Arsenal. In the summer most on here didn't really consider getting any of Gunners & Wolves before GW4. Nothing changed. But both are bound to bounce back this weekend.

Of course it’s going to look good if they perform against Watford. Watford are good at home however. I’m seeing wildcarders with 2, even 3 Wolves. Way to optimistic without actual returns. Brentford no slouches either GW5.

Exactly. They aren't going to all of a sudden get handed goals and clean sheets by so-called lesser teams.

GW4: Watford away I doubt will be easy. They beat Villa already.
GW5: Brentford won't just roll over. CS is a possibility though.
GW6: Southampton away... Southampton held United in GW2.
GW7: Newcastle at home they should win, but may struggle to keep a clean sheet against the likes of Wilson.
GW8: Aston Villa away very unlikely of getting a CS there.
GW9: Leeds away... almost no chance of a CS.

Indeed. 3 Wolves is a liability not an asset. Likewise Arsenal.

I'm going with Tierney and Traore as fixture based punts who are the standout picks based on my custom stats tables.

For those with a 3rd bench striker. Who have you picked and why?

Currently got Dennis. Will play him this week because James is suspended.

Is it worth downgrading to a 4.5 and pump the money elsewhere?

At least Dennis plays and could be useful as a bench player.

Hey guys, my squad doesn't need a WC but is it worth losing either Son or TAA (along with Ings) in order to get Ronaldo or should I go without this week? 1 FT and zero ITB

          Sanchez
          TAA - Shaw - Coufal - Ayling
          Salah - Bruno - Son - Benny
          Ings - Antonio

          Foster - Livra - Gilmour - Perica

If son is out then that swtich makes sense. Keep TAA

What do we prefer for my WC team?

          a) Rudiger and Sanchez
          or
          b) Christensen and Sa

Not seeing many Leeds players on WC's. Just look at those fixtures from next gw, Bamford being massively overlooked

Ayling & Raphinha looking great little picks

            BamBam could go BoomBoom
