World’s best FPL manager Fábio Borges speaks as we honour Hall of Fame greats

We hear from arguably the world’s greatest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager, Fábio Borges, as we launch our Hall of Fame roll of honour.

Here at Fantasy Football Scout, we believe it is important to acknowledge the best of the best when it comes to FPL.

This means that every year, we will toast the top five managers in our prestigious Career Hall of Fame.

The managers who can break into the top five will be immortalised on our Hall of Fame page.

You can check your own position in the Hall of Fame by becoming a Fantasy Football Scout Member and joining either of our two FPL mini-leagues.

Our Live Hall of Fame, which is updated throughout the season, had its first refresh for 2021/22 over the international break and you’ll be able to see all the correct new IDs attached to the managers in question.

And where better to start our mini-profiles of the elite managers than with Fábio Borges, our Hall of Fame number one who can boast of six top 5k finishes in a row.

You can read a more detailed interview with Fábio here.

Hall of Fame Career #1-#5 12
How do you generally approach FPL? What is your main strategy/style?

Fábio: I am definitely a stats-oriented manager. I do watch one or two matches every weekend but it is basically impossible to remember every small detail of every game and stats basically do that for me.

Regarding hits, it is very rare that I take them outside of Double Gameweeks. I like to plan ahead very carefully and since I am a very patient manager, unless there is an injury crisis, I like to stick to my guns.

What is your best FPL moment?

Fábio: When I captained Charlie Austin for a hat-trick in my first season playing. I was a casual player before but I enjoyed the thrill of a captaincy haul so much that I started taking the game much more seriously after that moment.

What are your top tips for securing a good finish?

Fábio: 1) Fixtures over form. We never know when a good period of form starts and when it ends so I think it is better to mainly focus on long-term stats since they give you a better view of what each player can deliver on average. Fixtures, on the other hand, are very important, since on average, every player does better in easier fixtures.

2) Transfers are precious. Don’t sell a player just because he blanked and someone else scored a hat-trick. Always try to buy reliable players that you feel confident having for at least four Gameweeks, even if they blank in the first three. By picking set-and-forget options and sticking with them through bad times, you can use your precious transfers on weaker spots in your team without having to take too many hits.

3) Be aware that luck is a massive factor in this game. Just because you had a bad Gameweek doesn’t necessarily mean that you made bad decisions. At the same time, just because your captain hauled, it doesn’t mean you made a good decision either. Always analyse your decisions with a critical eye but without being too harsh on yourself. After all, most factors in every football match are out of your control and happenstance plays a huge part in your team’s points in a single Gameweek.

What stats do you pay most attention to? What is your favourite tool in the Premium Members Area?

Fábio: I mainly focus on expected goals (xG) these days since I believe it is by far the most useful stat (assuming the model is reliable). I usually prioritise long-term stats since there is a lot of variance/luck in smaller samples.

    Gtg?

    Sanchez
    TAA-Shaw-Semedo
    Salah (C)-Torres-Jota-Sarr
    CR7-Jimmy-Bamford

    Gunn-Williams-Gilmore-Livra

    Plan is CR7/Shaw>Kaku/Reece in GW7.

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling, Duffy (Livramento)
    Salah, Bruno, Greenwood, Jota, Benrahma
    Jimenez (Perica, Antonio)

    2ft 1.1itb

a/ Bruno + Perica > Lukaku + ESR (bench Duffy)
    b/ Bruno + Perica > Ronaldo + 4.5
    c/ Ayling > James/Rudiger

    Something else?
I don’t really want to sell Bruno this week - and I feel like Ayling then is the weakest spot.

why not sell bruno when you have 2FT?
unless on wc, chelsea defenders can wait til gw7

Because he’s still got good fixtures and he’s awesome.

The goal is to get to Lukaku for gw7 so going Ron now seems a waste of a move - may as well go straight to Lukaku. But if that’s the plan I’d rather just wait until gw7 with Bruno in the mean time.

I could downgrade Bruno and not go straight to Lukaku but I don’t feel great about any mids right now. So don’t want to punt on someone.

It’s hard making decisions. Hence the defense upgrade to not waste a transfer. Ultimately James/Rudiger is better than Ayling regardless of fixtures.

Fair call and you know he will play
Everybody has a different plan, I’m still working through my wildcard this week

            2 years, 6 months ago

Yeah I sometimes wish I’d wildcard - but I can get to a solid team in 4 moves for gw7 as it stands.
Shift to a 3-4-3 by turning Bruno into Lukaku. Get in a Chelsea defender.

It’s tough being slow and patient but got to believe in it and stick to it if it still makes sense.

    Sanchez | 4.0
TAA | White | Livramento (Duffy | Williams)
Salah | Pogba | Gray | Gallagher (Sissoko)
    Ronaldo | Lukaku | Bamford

On WC. Is it better to go Bamford => 4.5 and upgrade Sissoko and Duffy with Raphinha and 5+

    1. RogDog_jimmy

      2 years, 6 months ago

Yeah I like the depth of the no-Bamford option.
Plus he hasn’t done anything yet. Worried about Leeds a little but you’ll have Raphinha and he looks more likely anyway.

Thanks. Currently have Antonio in place of Bamford, bought at 7.5. Also a dillemma, but on WC seems like should chase this GW's points at first.

Some advice please on best wildcard keepers?
sanchez ownership keeps rising and they have such a mixed bag of games
who are your top3 choices up to gw 18/19 (max 5.0m)

Here's the run from gw6 for the following:
Guiata - BHA LEI ars NEW mci WOL bur AVL lee mun EVE SOU wat
Ramsdale - TOT bha CRY AVL lei WAT liv NEW mun eve SOU WHU lee
Sanchez - cry ARS nor MCI liv NEW avl LEE whu sou TOT WOL mun
Sa - sou NEW avl lee EVE cry WHU nor BUR LIV mci bha CHE

Will probably go Semedo so might skip Sa even though he has the best gw5 fixture

    1. CBonci

Meslier : new, WHU, WAT, sou, WOL, nor, LEI, tot, bha, CRP, BRE, che, mci, ARS

You can cover Sanchez' easy games with Duffy in defense.

      Pickford's fixtures are also okay.

I’d do Ramsdale if I was confident he was a nailed starter.

Might rather double up with Sanchez and Ramsdale over a 5.0 and a 4.0.

But if I did a 5.0 it would be Sa.

So that doesn’t answer anything. Lol.

If you are looking at a keeper, fixtures don't matter... You should ideally have him till hour next wildcard so don't stress too much... There is a chance of more saves from others but picking the right one is almost impossible... Sanchez could be the best but will never be the worst

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Fixtures certainly do matter. Some teams do fine in most games but get battered by the Top teams. Sanchez, for me, is a safe bet except for facing the Top Teams in 3 of 4 GWs somewhere around GW9-12. But McCarthy has easy fixtures there, so I'll lose Sanchez for those matches then bring him back.

    Sanchez
    Trent, Shaw, White, Veltman
    Salah(c), Greenwood, Benrahma, Barnes
    Kane, Jimenez

    Steele, Brownhill, Tsimikas, Antonio
    Bank 0.4m

What's a checklist, and should it be on my checklist to have one?

You may want to consider making a checklist for the pros and cons of embarking on such an endeavor.

      My Scout activity checklist:

      - continue to slag off Arsenal assets even though i secretly want them to do well and may even get White.
      - continue to shoehorn in British conversational slang in an attempt to fit in.
      - keep trying to remind people that cramming in the 'Big 4' is going to result in very unbalanced teams unless they get very lucky.
      - pander to the other good players with awkward humor.
      - continue to lightly troll Inazuma X1.
      - mistakenly try to assert i know what i'm doing even though i haven't played FPL in ten years, but insist i do because i know the lingo.

Yeah still think they'll keep a cs against sou..........think rudiger/ james are better options on wc?

Well even apart from Leipzig, Stones and Laporte were out due to sickness. No idea if they'll be fit for Saints. Dias and Cancelo played 90 gruelling minutes. I really wouldn't like to guess who starts. Chelsea defenders are good if you can stomach GW6. Definitely Chelsea players on a wildcard as they'll be rotated less (but still rotated).

    B) Antonio/ DCL/ Webster ➡ Bamford/ Jesus/ Semedo (-4)

If you had to pick between one of these two:

    A: Torres
    B: Grealish

      Torres

Leaning that way myself too, but no concerns he gets benched for Sterling in the weekend?. My bench will be a bit thin this week due to Dier and Antonio. Hence being more guaranteed in the roulette would also be a big priority for me this week. Will probably WC in GW8

      Tough one probably Grealish

Think Torres has more explosive potential, but yeah, Grealish keeping me thinking as I feel he's more "nailed" than Torres. Or is he?

With KDB & Foden coming back it's bit of a guessing game now.

Torres for me because of his price and he's playing as a center forward. Although it may not matter because City can conjure goals from virtually anywhere.

Thinking of getting Sarr in my team because of the good fixtures but haven't watched any of their games, how has he looked so far?

Other than Villa game, he has not really shown much threat in other games. Could be due to the opponent they have faced, Norwich/Newcastle are on lower level.

His “threat” as measured by FPL:

      Villa - 44.0
      Brighton - 7.0
      Spurs - 77.0
      Wolves - 10.0
      Norwich - ???

Surprising numbers for Spurs game. Thought even Sissoko had more threat than him vs Spurs 😀

I would just say that Watford's attack has been very very poor, and i would avoid. Maybe he'll nick a few, sure, but having a Watford player in my team is something you couldn't pay me to do.
