Sell Ronaldo for Lukaku in Gameweek 7? What FPL managers are thinking

A favourable fixture swing for Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) going into Gameweek 7 has seen the Belgian attract around 175,000 new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at the time of writing.

The Blues rise to the top of our Season Ticker for the medium term, with their next five league matches, in particular, standing out:

For those FPL bosses keen on Lukaku, how to acquire him is the next dilemma.

A ‘three premium’ set-up means that Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) wouldn’t have to be sold to accommodate the Belgian, although that would require considerable sacrifices elsewhere.

For those with space for only two heavy hitters, then it might be a case of ditching the top-scoring Fantasy asset, Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), and reallocating funds up top, or, more likely, offloading Ronaldo in a like-for-like swap.

The veteran Portuguese is the second most-sold forward of Gameweek 7 so far, with just over 100,000 transfers out at the time of writing.

We delve into the responses from both our on-site poll and Hot Topic to see what the Fantasy Football Scout community is thinking.

Anything worth a -4 hit here? 2.6m in the bank.

    Sanchez
    Trent - Rudiger - Marcal
    Salah - Jota - Gray - ESR
    Antonio - Bamford - Cr7 (c)

    Steele - Sissoko - Livra - Williams

You would expexct UTD to bounce back vs Everton. Not sure there will be clean sheets in this game. I would not bet against Ronaldo going big GW7.

As for who to get rid of, difficult as Lukaku has not really hit the ground running with 3 blanks in 5 matches, could not score vs a poor Spurs side. Chelsea midfield is also not creating much and Lukaku has not really been involved that much has he? With Ronaldo he is running the show at UTD. Like he is the only player on the pitch for them at this point lol.

I have both and will see what happens GW7. I am capping Ronaldo, Soton only conceded one shot on target vs City, let's not forget that.

    Ramsdale / Foster
    TAA / Cancelo / Alonso / Rudiger / Duffy
    Salah / Saka / Galla / Gray / 4.5

    Salah Raphinha Sarr Gray (Allan)
    Ronaldo Lukaku Antonio

0itb. How do I fit Martinez in here? Not willing to lose Ronaldo or Lukaku. Was planning on downgrading Antonio next week but am now thinking it's silly with him having the 2nd highest pts despite having negative pts one week and being suspended for another. Was thinking of moving Sarr on in a few weeks too but not too sure of doing it just yet.

Wouldn't consider Martinez a must with those fixtures and Villa's unpredictability so far... And especially when Cash exists

Sanchez has Arsenal and Norwich, then an easy switch to McCarthy. So you can focus that 1.0m elsewhere, right?

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

Hmmm good points. I didn't even think I fancied any of the 5m Keepers but Martinez looks like he's not far off last season's form and has 4bps and 1 save point in the last 2, and I guess I just don't feel like I can rely on Brighton to not concede in their next run maybe up to GW15 apart from Norwich, while I like Villa's run up to GW13. 5.5 is a lot though. I guess I'll give it another week or two and see what happens.

Its not going to take long for everyone to regret spending a ton of their budget in defence.

Maybe, but I think the logic is that 6m defenders from City and Chelsea will prove to be more reliable returners than 6m midfielders or forwards.

I think the lack of Chelsea options in midfield, plus lack of 6.5m+ good options in mid generally, plus 4 out of 5 excellent fixtures makes a double up a good shout. We have transfers, will jump off in a few weeks.

On the contrary, I see City and Chelsea defenders as season keepers, allowing me to focus transfers on mid price midfielders and forwards.

Yes. This is why I got Tierney on my GW3 WC and started him for GWs 4 through 6, happily. That was easy to predict. Arsenal defence is easy to predict

Villa, Leicester, Liverpool, Man U, Everton, West Ham and Leeds all can score against this Arsenal backline. I wouldn't bet against that

Could work. You pretty much have the 3 out of 5 the most 'nailed' if we can call it that City assets. But you know the risks ha ha. Dias and Ederson the other two. The rest of their assets are not an option at all.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

Yeah. The lack of clear rotation threats from the fully fit Sterling and Mahrez so far has me convinced about those two wingers. I'm gonna have to take any absences on the chin, but I think I'm prepared for that in the 11+ GW run. UCL and GW7 should give a bit more info on Foden + KDB impacts, but they've so far been threats to Torres and Bilva/Gundo instead

It's interesting. I like Jesus and am tempted by a short term punt on him too. I'm not sure on Grealish. He won't outscore Dias, so why bother.

He's been rather unlucky so far, to be fair. Leading many stats too. I also don't have space for a fourth premium defender with that Tierney/Pinnock axis + Grealish likely to match/beat Dias + Gray/Gallagher/Sarr mid to long-term

Saka's stats don't remotely compare to Grealish's at the moment, and he's been historically just as bad at getting returns. Remember that Saka started vs Norwich. I simply can't trust him long term until he switches his end product up remarkably

Oh yeah, Gilmour is my weakness. Wouldn't have been here if this was a wildcard... But he went from nailed by GW3 with no competition to his current spinning top status

Thing is, I won't have that spare FT to change him for a while. So I'll just roll with it and hope that if both City attackers are benched, at least one must come on for 1 point, with D Luiz bringing 1 to 3 points

That, or an uninspiring -4 or burnt FT for Gilmour to Brownhill/Allan if things get dire

      Rough:
Left Cancelo on bench and played James instead. Would have taken me top of my ML.
      Another Schmeichel clean sheet ruined...

      Smooth:
Bought Sarr and Antonio (but sold Raph and Jimmy..)
Salah captain when others captained Ronaldo

      48 points.
No transfers made. I was debating whether to bring in Ronaldo for the VIL game as I felt he was going to score big. Avoiding that one and then learnt that he is not on pens, justified the decision to go without and keep Lukaku.
      Captaining Salah worked out.

Decided late on to make a bold captaincy change from Ronaldo to Sarr, ended on 73 points with all 4 midfielders & 2 of my forwards getting a goal each (Salah, Jota, Captain Sarr, Raph, Jimenez & Antonio). Almost a 300k rank rise from 354k to 69k.

Yes, I have 2FTs so I will have made 3 at the end of this week.
When I pulled the WC I also had 2FTs, however, Son's injury in the IB, Ronaldo/Lukaku and other mitigating factors kind of forced my hand. Otherwise, of course, I should have looked to have made an extra transfer the week before.

I'd say you would be above me without the hits but then again you would have a different team.
Quite fascinating the different ways of playing the game.

The first two hits led to a one point gain and then a one point loss so no real impact to rank from them

Well yea depends on the injury status. If all are deemed fit then I might just keep Shaw and do Jota -> Havertz just for the 1gw punt. Shaw still has an ok fixture even though he is a fraud. Definetly gone from my team by the time game updates on Saturday.

Laporte,Cancelo,Alonso too much on WCgmwk8? In terms of certainty of starts. I think Laporte will get 15 pointer soon, could be nice differential

I'm considering Rüdiger, Cancelo, Dias and TAA. Big at the back seems really good with the medium priced mids/forwards delivering good points.

In terms of certainty of starts I think Rüdiger and Dias are more secure than Laporte and Alonso. Yes Alonso offers great attacking potential but I could see him get rotated a lot during Chelsea's good run of games.

One thing I noticed during the Brighton Palace game last night was how much of threat Duffy was from every set piece.

He’s had a 5 goal return in a season before and if he is nailed again this season I can easily see him matching that again.

Veltman offers so much more in a build up sense. Maybe Duffy can move over to the right and replace Burn with Webster out? I’m not sure. I think his time might be limited.

    Ederson
    Cancelo TAA Dias VVD

Attacking returns combined with clean sheets galore!

This setup at the back could end up outscoring any midfield most weeks. Of course you will have to go 433 or 442 and your midfield won't be the strongest unless you go without Ronaldo and Lukaku up top.

Man United play Wednesday night, and early kick off Saturday. Could make it difficult for Man United with such short turn around. Made me a little less confident about Ronaldo (C).
