FPL Gameweek 7 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned

It was a low-scoring day for many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, with blanks for many of the most-owned players and the widely backed captaincy picks.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) contrived to hit the post from three yards en route to a fourth blank in five appearances, while Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) owners had to swallow a ‘one-pointer’ after the Manchester United forward was surprisingly named among the substitutes at Old Trafford and reduced to a 35-minute cameo.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 7 fixtures.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Anthony Martial (£8.4m) picked up a knock in Manchester United’s draw with Everton, a match that Luke Shaw (£5.4m) was passed fit for after illness and injury.

Ben Mee (£4.9m) was a surprise no-show when the Burnley teamsheet was released, with the first-choice stopper picking up an ankle injury in training that his manager doesn’t think is serious.

The Clarets lost a further player during the clash with Norwich, with Matej Vydra (£5.3m) suffering a knock.

Watford’s defeat at Leeds was further compounded by the loss of two players to injury, with Josh King (£5.5m) and Francisco Sierralta (£4.3m) both limping off. Xisco Munoz doesn’t yet know the severity of either issue.

King’s departure saw Emmanuel Dennis (£5.3m) move into a centre-forward role, following his recent stint on the left flank.

Leeds lost a key player of their own, with Stuart Dallas (£5.3m) hobbling off – Marcelo Bielsa said after full-time that it was too early for a prognosis on the Northern Ireland international.

Joe Willock (£5.9m) lasted little more than half an hour of Newcastle’s defeat to Wolves before succumbing to a hip injury.

Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) limped out of Arsenal’s match against Brighton and Hove Albion late on but Mikel Arteta said he “should be fine.”

On the ban front, James Ward-Prowse (£6.4m) was sent off for serious foul play against Chelsea and will miss Southampton’s next three matches. One of those games is in the EFL Cup, however, so he’ll be back in Gameweek 10.

THE THINGS WE LEARNED

FPL Gameweek 7 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 8
NOT TOO BIG TO BENCH

Reaffirming Bruno Fernandes (£11.9m) as the club’s penalty taker one week, benching Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) the next… a cynic might suggest that the last fortnight has been some sort of power play from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and/or an audition to be the new voice of Sage.

The Norwegian however cited the need for freshness ahead of kick-off when asked about his decision to leave Ronaldo and Paul Pogba (£7.8m) out of his starting XI:

“Wednesday night was a big effort, big emotional and physical output, so we needed to freshen it up when it’s an early kick-off.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Whatever the motivation for Ronaldo’s demotion to impact substitute in Gameweek 7 (he is 36, lest we forget), it was a notice to FPL managers that even the Portuguese club legend isn’t going to be immune from the odd rest over the coming weeks and months.

WE HAVE A PLAYING £4.0m GOALKEEPER

Ben Foster (£4.0m) had started the last two Premier League matches for Watford but it wasn’t abundantly clear whether he was the undisputed number one at Vicarage Road, given that Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m) had been plagued by a knee injury over the last fortnight.

Passed fit by the Hornets on Thursday, Bachmann returned to the matchday squad against Leeds – but was only among the substitutes, with Foster keeping his place.

The veteran was repeatedly called into action against Leeds and one of the few to emerge from the defeat with any credit.

Watford haven’t kept a clean sheet all season so he’s probably not an option for anything other than emergency bench duty, especially with the fixtures turning iffy over the next eight Gameweeks.

IS HWANG/RAUL THE NEW JOTA/JIMENEZ?

Bruno Lage praised the link-up play between Hwang Hee-chan (£5.5m) and Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) ahead of Saturday’s win over Newcastle and the pair duly combined for both of Wolves’ goals on Saturday.

It certainly wasn’t a vintage attacking display by Bruno Lage’s side, who had fewer shots than all top-flight teams bar Watford on Saturday.

And a conversion rate of 60% (three goals from five shots) isn’t obviously sustainable for Hwang in the long term.

But Wolves having a more clinical striker up top is a welcome change from the profligacy we’ve seen so far in 2021/22 and a potential boon to Jimenez, who has created more chances than any other FPL forward this season.

The Mexican is the only player among the top 10k’s 20 most-owned FPL assets who has delivered a double-digit haul in Gameweek 7 so far:

STRONG BENCHES ARE NEEDED

Not so much a lesson learned as a weekly reminder, in this instance – and not for the first time – from Thomas Tuchel.

Managers whose teams are playing in Europe and are still in the EFL Cup face two games a week from now until the end of the calendar year and the irksome rotation is well underway.

On top of Ronaldo and Pogba at United, we saw Marcos Alonso (£6.0m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) dropped to the bench for Chelsea’s win over Southampton.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 7

We’re historically used to seeing Andros Townsend (£5.5m) score screamers from distance but the winger earlier in the week discussed the work he was doing under Rafael Benitez to get closer to the goal.

And, wouldn’t you know it, the ex-England wide-man is joint-top for shots in the box in Gameweek 7 so far and at the top of the pile for expected goal involvement (xGI).

Townsend is now joint-second among midfielders for FPL points alongside the man who teed him up for his fifth attacking return of the season at Old Trafford, Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.6m).

He’s also top of the FPL form table, which calculates a player’s average score from all matches played by his club in the last 30 days.

Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) turned in a man-of-the-match showing in the evening kick-off at the Amex and, as is not always the case, the maximum bonus was dished out to the best player on the park.

No player has created more chances than the Brighton wing-back in Gameweek 7 so far and, since his debut in Gameweek 4, only two FPL defenders have registered more final-third touches.

What are those with Alonso doing? Holding for another week or accepting it was a mistake bringing him in and banking the rise and moving him on to a city defender? Plan was Jota and Semedo to cancelo / dias and a sub 6.5m mid (-4) but I could just do Alonso to cancelo / dias for free and ride with semedo and Jota for another week

Sold him and semedo for Rudiger and cancelo last night. It was part of my WC though. Wouldn’t have done it so early otherwise.

You reckon? What makes you say that? I'd like to keep if I can but I'm afraid he'll be a no show for the foreseeable, particularly with him on international duty now and Chilwell getting a rest

Well he's played 6 PL games in a row. What makes you think that is going to change just because he sat out one game? Ronaldo sat out most of yesterday's game but we don't question his future gametime, so why would we do the same with Alonso?

I would say because Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world whereas there is a general consensus that Chilwell is a better player than Alonso and that Alonso was only starting at the beginning of the season because Chilwell was struggling with some mental issues. But WTFDIK

It depends on the makeup of your team. If the rest of your defence are solid starters then there is no reason to sell. I think it is ok to have one high risk/high reward player like Alonso in such circumstances.

Alonso (& Azpi FYI) have been called up to the Spain squad. Chilwell hasn't been called up for England.

Predicting Tuchel is very difficult, but if Chilly has 2 weeks rest & training with the club when Alonso is away, I'd suggest there is a real risk of Alonso not starting again in GW 8.

With 2 games a week with CL & cup fixtures booking up, logically there will be rotation. (Malmö Home & Away next 2 CL, Saints in CC)

I don't want to offer any advice either way, as I thought Christensen would start yesterday & I got that wrong, but wanted to highlight the international call ups FYI.

Doesn’t metter is cr7 … united is not that good… it’s a mistake to have 12.7 in our teams. Anyway in chelsea fixture have more chance to have goals and of course hope for Lukaku, manchester is not that good, maybe second season …

I hit the WC yesterday and Ronaldo to Lukaku was my first move..

Still early I know, but whilst it's quiet enough here to have a conversation and I am procrastinating another task, thought I would ask. If you were on WC, would you think that it's worth going with someone like Jesus/DCL/Jimenez in the 3rd forward slot over the cheaper Hwang/Toney/Armstrong?

Toney is nice, he trolled me earlier in the year but feel with his upcoming fixtures he's worth a shout. In response to that I ask you, do you think he's worth the extra cash over Mbuemo, over even a double up?

Trolled me too, Mbuemo is always nice to have being OOP, sometimes being higher than Toney up the pitch. I would go for a double up if I have the likes of Sarr in mid to replace.

Jesus only intrigues me due to him getting surprisingly good minutes, but his Brazil duties put me off him a little, feels like a waste when they have such a nice fixture next if we won't play. Do you think Grealish is the way to go for City attack?

    3. FPL ElasticO

Jimenez I like, especially if he is getting his confidence back. Those Brentford fixtures look so nice from 10 on you're right. Him being cheaper than DCL is even better as well!

In the case of Jimi, yes. I have watched the last few WOL games and I have noticed he seems to be gaining a lot of confidence in his play. He played some great passes to Hee Man yesterday. The one drawback is that there isn't a significant goal threat at present and probably needs Traore alongside.

I wouldn't bother with anyone at STH apart from Livra who is great value.

      1. Thomas Magnum

I do like Jim. Although, is he playing deeper than Hwang or still high enough he's a threat? I do feel DCL is being a little overlooked being injured for a few weeks and dropping but I own Doucoure and not sure I would double up with their fixtures

Thanks all, I think I'm liking Jimenez the most right now. Jesus would've been nice but feels like a waste if he won't play home to Burnley. DCL is the other one I would consider until GW10 where I would likely give Toney a run but their fixtures aren't much better than Wolves, plus he is still under the injury cloud.

Not to rub salt into wounds, but genuinely surprised at Alonso buyers after what happened vs Juve.

A half-time sub at 0-0 isn't a rest or due to a yellow. It's tactical more than anything. He wasn't playing well and his direct competition was subbed on. Even if he had started this week, this was a sign that he would be rotated soon and you would just be booking a future transfer.

    1. Jafalad

So how do you explain the Christensen benching?

      1. Cok3y5murf

Christensen was subbed off around 70' when they were 1-0 down for an attacker. So it was just to score. He is just not nailed though. Last season he played the full 90 just 9 times out of a possible 17 games

Chelsea is just "Peps roulette v2.0".
Buying their assets comes with often big rewards and risk of occasional benching.

I got Alonso couple of weeks ago along with playing bench player as I fully expected him to be rotated at some point.
Yesterday changes nothing for me will hold to him for next two weeks and only if he's benched in both I will look to move him on.

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Is the benching worth it though? As an example, Dias outscored Cancelo last season, and it was purely due to minutes. So the minutes do matter. Your sub won't always get points nor will he always come on because if Chilwell was subbed on at half-time, the same thing could happen to Alonso and then a possible 1-pointer

        1. el polako
          • 6 Years

4 cleans sheets in next 4 games for Chelsea are possible, should Alonso play 90 minutes twice that's min of 12 points. The very offensive way he's been playing its not unreasonable to expect atleast one offensive return add to it my bench points - I'm quite happy to hold for now.

Obviously any indication that Chillwell is the main man and Spaniard is going.

Its a gut call but one that was made knowing that he will be benched every now and then at least. For me, I brought him in in the hope he will start 3/4. If it turns out the he has been dropped and not simply rotated then that changes the discussion. Alonso is only there for his attacking potential, not his clean sheets.

Gallagher or Benrahma. Even though they have a few fixtures classed as more difficult for a win they can still get attacking points.

I don't mind Benrahma but owning Antonio I am not sure I would want the double up, maybe you're the same. After that one of the Everton mids and then Zaha if you're feeling punty, other than the City game their fixtures aren't bad plus if you throw in pens

First GW's were very good point haulers, but now for 2-3 GW's it gets worse with every GW(because of injuries and suprise results). 😛 On a positive side at least it's bad for most of the people.

This GW 7 is worst so far.(only 12 points) Only positive thing might be, that I captained Antonio this week. Don't know how he does yet, but other most popular captains did pretty badly.

I'm heartened to see you focusing on the positives in such a dismal week. Hope Antonio delivers for you.

Well my overall rank has dropped a lot(due to the fact that it's a bad week points wise for many others as well), but it's still way better then in previous years when I wasn't so focused.

So that's why it's not hard to look at positive sides.

It should be easy to deliver for Antonio, considering that Ronaldo and Lukaku did pretty badly. But of course there's a chance he does not deliver.

One good thing is lower average weekly points in FPL limit the points spread if you have a bad week. The points gaps are small this season so a big drop in rank is not as bad as it seems.

That's true. It's easier to catch up that way. Having all the chips unused and wild card unused is a big plus do I think.

Most have a combination of Lukaku and Ronaldo and I am more than aware of them going large at some time. As my user name suggests I have a caveat for owning either.
Let us take Ronaldo: At 12.7 and ManU playing 2 games a week, the games he is likely to miss are the "easier games". We can expect him to play 40 games this season and he will no doubt score goals but ManU struggle to get 2+ goals a game so Ronaldo is not going to get too many double attacking returns, which is a must for his price. His record against top sides is not that great. He is not on pens. He loses out on the extra 2 points on hand as a mid. 10 out of the 40 games are likely not to be league games. International breaks must be added to the list. Whether he likes it or not, Bruno is the star. Ronaldo could get 16 goals in the league which will never cover his price. He gets very few assists too. Bruno, KDB, Son, Salah will outscore him PPG IMO. The 6.5 to 10 bracket in forwards have a similar chance to Ronaldo of scoring points. (Antonio, Bamford, DCL, Jimenez, Vardy, Auba) Only Vardy and Antonio has Europe to contend with, lessening the likelihood of the names mentioned suffering rotation in the league.

Let us take Lukaku: Without doubt he is a far better choice; cheaper, younger and less forward choices for Chelsea are a few pointers to better performance. My major doubt with him is Chelsea's ability to create chances for him. To be fair, Werner was more effective yesterday; his goal being a run to beat Lukaku to the punch. I would have him in good fixture runs but Chelsea are more likely to progress further in competitions and Tuchel will rotate if Werner and Havertz get their act together.

At the moment I am sticking with Lukaku but after his good fixture run I think I will have other options as a rotating captain with Salah.

Kaku’s goal from Rudiger assist would have been ideal

Don’t know how he managed to hit the post in the run up to the third goal either, albeit he was sliding

And Werner stole a goal off his toe too

      Should be ok

Unbelievably easy sell if he hasn’t excelled after his next 4 or 5 fixtures anyways

I've had both for their last four games, Ronaldo has scored in 3 of those, Lukaku hasn't scored or assisted in any despite Chelsea scoring 6 goals. Age has nothing to do with it, Ronaldo is the far superior goal scorer and the much better player, Lukaku still hasn't shown he can cut it for a top premier League team and isn't even a flat track bully as shown yesterday when I captained him.

Or at least scoring + max baps whilst also being captained

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall in the dressing room afterwards

Deep into stoppage time Ole was shouting and grinning at someone on the pitch as if Utd were 5-0 up and out the gate….

Contrast that with Ronaldo cussing like a mofo on the way to the tunnel, and Pogba looked same

The whole VDB throwing the bib down on Wednesday night didn’t look good either (you could see Mata & Pogba conversing about something during it - I’m sure Ole’s name was coming up in conversation)

Too early to be writing P45’s, and Utd have been traditionally slow starters - but big improvements needed in the run up to Christmas now

It was such a mess. His reactions to losses are quite puzzling. Like you say, huge improvements needed by Christmas.

He got CR7, Varane and Sancho this summer. No excuses left. Trophy & title challenge is the minimum requirement.

Depends on Foster's form. Who's your other keeper?

Ramsdale so I'm fine, just annoyed that I forgot to swap Steele for Foster

You would be fine if it was Steele deputising for Sanchez.
I am a Ramsdale owner and definitely want Foster for the assurance.

Watford seem to be slightly better with Foster in goal.

No. It would be Foster's to lose, now.

It will be this coming run of tough games. If he fails in those then i think he's gone.

Although United tend to do better against tougher opposition and worse against mid table opposition.

Yes and thats probably what has kept him around. The fact that the team performs against tougher opposition.

Is selling Ronaldo now for Lukaku this GW too early? There are international fixtures to come and Ronaldo arguably has the better fixture for an attacker. Also Lukaku has now gone 4 games without a goal.

I'm looking at Ronaldo to Jesus(BUR). Frees up 4mil and City could absolutely smash.

I still can't bive that on the day I've for the first time captained Lukaku that joke of a forward Werner scored.

Lukaku hasn't scored in the four games since I brought him in meanwhile Townsend has been hauling week in week out, surely it just emphasises that it's all just luck

Werner gets too much stick, Chelsea look like a much more dangerous side with him playing. Sure he might miss a lot of chances but his movement creates those chances in the first place.

When Calvert Lewin and Richarlison are fit and starting Doucoure will prob be less attack minded. Is there a chance that Townsend or Gray could drop to the bench in that case?

Yesterdays game goes to show how similar Alonso and Chilwell are. Chilwell gave away a stupid stupid penalty, and goes and scores a screamer. Such an Alonso performance from Chilwell.

Would he have done better if had as much gametime this season as Alonso? I just think he's a better defender than Alonso, Alonso better attacker. Neither are even very good defenders, not many very good defensive fullbacks anymore in PL unfortunately.

Chelsea fan here. Absolutely no doubt that Chilwell is a better DF than Alonso. Ask any Chelsea fan that's watched us regularly & they will all confirm this is 100% the case.
TBF to Alonso, before the last 2 games he's played well & why he's kept his place.
Yes the Chilwell penalty challenge was poor, but considering his lack of game time it's natural for him to be slightly off the pace of the game. I don't think it's fair to judge Chillys ability as a DF based on one challenge. Food for thought, he was first choice last season for a reason & he's a CL winner.
Alonso lack of pace is a weakness than can be easily exploited.
