FPL Hall of Fame: Tips from one of the world’s best Fantasy managers

We hear from the absurdly consistent Morten Tveito as we continue to champion those in our Hall of Fame roll of honour.

Here at Fantasy Football Scout, we are acknowledging the best of the best when it comes to Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

And so, every year, we will salute the top five managers in our prestigious Career Hall of Fame.

The managers who can break into the top five will be immortalised on our Hall of Fame page.

You can check your own position in the Hall of Fame by becoming a Fantasy Football Scout Member and joining either of our two FPL mini-leagues.

Our Live Hall of Fame, which is updated throughout the season, had its first refresh for 2021/22 over the September international break and you’ll be able to see all the correct new IDs attached to the managers in question.

Having previously heard from Hall of Fame number one Fábio Borges and nine-time top 10k finisher Finn Sollie in our series of mini-profiles, we ask a few questions of Morten, who has overall ranks inside the top 1,000 in two of the last three years.

In his eight seasons playing FPL, Morten has finished out of the top 21,000 only once.

Hall of Fame Career #1-#5 8
HOW DO YOU GENERALLY APPROACH FPL? WHAT IS YOUR MAIN STRATEGY/STYLE?

I try to start out with proven players that I am fairly sure will get close to 90 minutes from the teams that I believe will start off well.

I also try to watch as many games as possible, especially at the beginning of the season, and will initially make early moves to build team value. If necessary I will take hits – I think I have 8-10 hits per season in the last three years.

The first Wildcard is not something I plan for but in the last two seasons, I have played it early, in Gameweeks 3 and 5.

My transfers are based on a combination of stats and eye test. I have several chats with world-class Norwegian FPL managers, and that is definitely a good way to get better.

You learn something from each season and I think being flexible is a good way to approach the game.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST FPL MOMENT?

I usually remember what goes wrong! I always try to get the Bench Boost perfect, but that rarely is the case. One exception is Gameweek 30+ in 2019/20, in which I gained a Gameweek rank of 3k, which brought me into the top 10,000 for the first time that season.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR SECURING A GOOD FINISH?

Be patient and trust your decisions, even if they don’t pay off immediately. Also, try to cover the best captain options each round to minimize risk. And slightly more specific… buy Diogo Jota when the Africa Cup of Nations starts in January!

WHAT STATS DO YOU PAY MOST ATTENTION TO? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TOOL IN THE PREMIUM MEMBERS AREA?

Expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) are two important stats, for me, and I always look at clean sheet odds provided by bookies.

I also use Mikkel Tokvam’s transfer algorithm as input when choosing which player to buy.

Player stats and team stats are the tools that I use in the Premium Members Area.

The only other obvious upgrade I could make is a 5.5 mid > Zaha as a result of that and I’m not certain that’s worthwhile

Owned Jota since GW1 and it’s been horrible. Not again. Don’t have the funds to have the depth to justify a Foden punt right now sadly

I believe it might work, but Livramento is such a steal, that I wanted to have him long term. I believe we are going to need in medium short term money in attack.

It's not as insane as you think. He's probably on pens while Bamford is out. Daniel James will win at least one penalty in the next 3 weeks.

Looks good. I'd probably go Rudiger over Chilwell but don't really mind the Chilwell punt as you've got good cover and flexibility with Livramento, Mbeumo and Hwang.

    Sanchez
    TAA, White, James
    Salah, Jota, Raphinha, Doucoure
    Lukaku, Antonio, Jimenez

    Steele; Livramento, Semedo, Sissoko.

    1 FT 1.9 ITB

Semedo -> Cancelo/Dias looks the obvious move here. Anything else? Not too worried about Trent, James or Raph missing out as White and Livra have decent enough fixtures this GW.

    1 FT & 3.2m

Sell Semedo or Marcal for Cancelo for free?

If James is still injured or if we know Raphinha isn't starting
worth taking a hit for Semedo/Marcal to Dias/Chilly//Rudi?

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Yeah Wolves defender to Cancelo for free looks good.

Wouldn't take a hit for a defender when you can play Livramento or Semedo/Marcal.

      1. Karan14
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Whom should I sell out of the two?

I think the hit could be worth considering as I anyways cant make the move for free till GW10 atleast (assuming I have no fires to put out till then).

        1. I Member
          • 8 Years

I'd probably sell Semedo just because he's more expensive.

Do you really need 4 strong starting defenders though? Won't that cause a benching headache?

    2. Jinswick

No need for a hit imo. Either save or Semedo -> Cancelo for me, probably the latter.

How are you feeling now about your WC in 5?

Curious because we had really similar teams going into that week and you hit the button and I didn't. I'm on WC now.

      1. Karan14
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Not great tbh but I feel I would have been tempted in GW6 & 7 to hit the wildcard button as well.

I was a bit unlucky too with the wildcard - Jota missing all his chances, James injured, Bamford injured, TAA injured.

Although I don't think I'm far away from the GW9/10 template now tbh.

      The Cancelo move looks good.

Seems unlikely to me that Raph will appear - much prefer to take Tuchel's word over the YEP. That said you have very decent bench cover and don't see the hit as worth it.

Think we're moving into the season where random benchings will happen at all the big clubs. CL getting into full swing and the calendar getting more congested. Ron benching last week just the precursor? Suspect Cancelo is due to miss one soon - could be CL but not necessarily. Have the bench and use it is my plan.

      1. Karan14
        • 7 Years

Cancelo is definitely in for me.
Yes I agree with the rotation part. That's why I feel having 12/13 desirable starters is not the worst option. Can rotate the 6m mids/defs.

Is Raphinha really that great a pick right now? He’s playing with an injury, has to deal with three games for Brazil before GW8, Leeds aren’t looking great in front of goal at the moment, and other than Norwich their fixtures aren’t great for scoring goals.

Cancelo is a RB by trade.

If Zinc does get some minutes at LB, Pep will most likely play Cancelo at RB?

Mendy is completely out of the picture. I reckon Cancelo will play most matches, if not all. Up to now it is heading that way.

I would have Cancelo instead of Dias, otherwise both.

Pretty settled on either Mane or KDB (instead of Lukaku) to partner with Salah in my WC team. Not seeing many drafts with either… am I brilliant or nuts?

Will play them every week, would you have
    A. Son + Livra (5-3-2)
    B. Jimenez + Saka (4-3-3)

B, because I get the feeling your 5-3-2 has probably got 4 premiums and at least 5 bench warmers at best.

Most likely 2 x 4.5mids on the bench in both formations.

This is basically a decision you are making between Son or Jimenez.

The rest of the team would be helpful to figure out what option would be better.

I suspect it’s Lukaku, Ronaldo and Scarlett up front.

Salah, Son and not sure who he’s gone for 3rd mid, possibly Benrahma or Raphina?

I’m also assuming that he doesn’t have TAA so has a City and Chelsea defender, Livramento and Duffy and some other reasonably cheap defender that he’s playing out of desperation each week because he’s better than the two £4.5 mids?

          Could be wrong though.

How about 4-3-3, with Son + Toney and rotating Livra and White/Duffy
        Draft:
        4.5 - 4
        TAA - Rudiger - Cancelo - Livra - White/Duffy
        Salah - Son - Raph - 4.5 - 4.5
        Lukaku - Antonio - Toney

He plays bre NOR new BUR.

      He's a flat-track bully.

He scored 28 league goals last season for Inter.

He's nailed on for 90 mins.

I really don't see why people are suddenly wavering on Lukaku other than the fact he has 3 blanks in 3 relatively tough games. He'll come good. I'm fairly sure of it. And if he doesn't come good with these fixtures, shrug and move on, you maximized expected points.

        He's not a flat-track bully, that's an obsolete trope.

He didn't score 28 for Inter last season, it was 23.

'Expected points' are for someone that wants to have an algorithm manager their team.

Apart from that, you are right enough. But you discount the fact that integrating a new player (however good) isn't automatic or easy and at Chelsea it is proving problematic because it requires a re-engineering of the team's patterns of play.

Correction: 24 in Serie A last season, not 23.

2019 -2021 Serie A though. Not the Serie A famed for it's defenders.

He looked good in poor PL teams being their dominant attacker made him a great FPL pick. The FPL FTB.

Question is, when Chelsea have their best 11 out, will his cut of their FPL points compare favourably to other forwards, pound for pound basis?

It means that he can come off the bench, get 15 minutes and score or assist so he picks up points.

Technically any player who is subbed on can do this, though.

      Most don’t, unfortunately.

Firmino and Jota have 10 league goals between them since GW30 last season - split more or less evenly. 3 were off the bench so it's not complete nonsense but Jota's benched brace distorts things likely.

    GW8 Free Hit

Super differential but I'm happy as a one week punt.

    Martinez
    Dunk, Matip, Laporte, Robertson
    Son, Mahrez, Foden, Jota (vc)
    Maupay, Kane (C)

    Steer, Livramento, Saint-Maximin, Brownhill

    Sa
    Cancelo Rudiger Azpi Livramento
    Salah Jota Traore
    Lukaku Antonio ASM

    (4.0 Sarr, Allan, Williams)
    1 FT & 3.2m

Not sure which transfer to do?

    1. Traore to Foden or Raph
    2. Williams to Dias
    3. Or both for 4pts?
