Should FPL managers buy Southampton players ahead of Gameweek 8?

After seven rounds of Premier League action, Southampton remain winless and sit just above the relegation zone with four points.

However, there have been encouraging performances against Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, while it’s also worth noting that they have played four of the division’s current top five.

Now, with fixtures easing, what comes next for Saints will be crucial, but for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, are their players worth investing in ahead of Gameweek 8, and if so, who?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

THE OUTLOOK

Firstly, Southampton will be without their captain James Ward-Prowse (£6.4m) for the next two Premier League fixtures, with the midfielder having been sent off at Stamford Bridge last weekend. The third match of his suspension conveniently arrives in the Carabao Cup fourth round, which means that he should be back for Watford (a) in Gameweek 10.

The expectation amongst supporters is that Ibrahima Diallo (£4.5m) will step in, having impressed at Chelsea. In fact, it was his pass that found Tino Livramento (£4.2m) who then won their second-half penalty.

“Ibra is a fantastic player, I must say that. He should really play more games.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

However, it’s the return of Stuart Armstrong (£5.8m) which could be key to unlocking Southampton’s attacking potential. The Scottish international has been sidelined with a calf injury, but is expected to make his first start of the season in Gameweek 8.

The fact that Saints have not won a Premier League match without him in the side since December 2019 highlights his importance to the group, something Ward-Prowse touched on in a recent interview:

“His quality going forwards and the way that he can shift from a slow pace dribble to fast pace really worries defenders and gives us a new dimension – and variety. This will be really important for us now.

He’s an incredibly important player for us, with his quality on the ball. His decision-making in the final third is incredibly important. He gives us a really good balance in the team. We have a lot of competition for places in that area but I am sure that he will come back in and have a really positive impact.”

Armstrong is the Saints’ best ball carrier, who has the ability to drive forward and link play between midfield and attack. He will enable his team to play through the lines with more structure and could add the spark that gets the strikers firing.

Going forward, Southampton have struggled in the opening weeks, scoring just three goals from open-play, plus two Ward-Prowse penalties.

However, fixtures have of course played their part (see below), and the underlying numbers do suggest that they have perhaps been a little unfortunate not to score more.

Southampton’s Gameweek 1 to 7 fixtures

Any of you Bench Boost haters (nothing wrong with that -- I'm gradually coming around to your point of view!) looking to unburden themselves of it in the next few weeks?

Someone who thinks it's a vastly overrated chip, and therefore you shouldn't rearrange your whole double gameweek strategy to accommodate playing it then.

Many play it in GW1, but some may use it in another favourable single gameweek.

Ahh right, I’ve seen the 1st GW idea.

I don’t get why you wouldn’t want to try and maximise it though?

Later in the season you have more TV and increase your chances of point hauls by having players play a max of 180 mins instead of 90.

But each to their own of course.

To be able to put more money into the first XI on 2nd WC. And potentially even get some high-upside rotation risks on 2nd WC without concern that being without 15 nailed players will mess up your BB.

Yeah, I will have two playing keepers at minimum expense post-WC if Ranieri sticks with Foster.

If he doesn't, then it's probably not worth considering.

Just got suckered into using my second free transfer after taking a look on FPLstatistics. Now I feel cheap and nasty!
That was Gilmour to Doucoure for a bit of extra cover.
Not sure whether I need to regret my earlier Ronaldo to Lukaku yet?

None taken. Just Gilmour hasn't played lately and feel I could use Doucoure in place of someone with a bad fixture (Sarr) where I wouldn't play Gilmour. Just felt the urge to strengthen my bench with Jota, TTA & Lukaku in my team (and still sweating over the Brazilian players returning).

Pick one to be your 7th attacker:

It's great news for Lukaku's owners that can see through that news.

Lots of fpl manager will offload him in their droves once they get spooked by the flag and those that keep the faith will have a fresh Rom.

I suppose some of their neighbors may not want to play with them for historical reasons and the games would be a security risk for the respective fans.

Ireland had to go even further away than Israel and play Azerbaijan this evening so go figure?

It's just one of those strange things like Australia competing in the European song contest.

Like what? Everyone knows that “Israel” is actually Palestine, a stolen land located in the Middle East…what history are you on about??? In regards to the point Ógie made, I can understand but otherwise not.

If you go back in the history books a bit more you will find Israel was a thing before Palestine was.

So you could say that particular crossroad of civilizations has been stolen many times over it's history.

Assyrians,Babylonians,Persians,Greeks,Romans,Arabs,Fatimids,Seljuk Turks,Crusaders,Egyptians,Mamelukes,Ottoman's,Palestinians and British all ruled over that land at one time or another and it will probably change hands again a few times before Armageddon happens.

Messy situation and probably one we are not going to sort out here.

I mean properly read a history book about the levant and peoples of Israel and Palestine going back thousands of years. Just to get a general idea of why it might make sense to have Israel in European football competitions.

Chillwell is still a rotation risk
Foden is too. I know you have good bench. What if he subbed off after 55-60 minutes or came after 70 minutes. You will get 1-2 pointers. Points will be shared in city. Too many quality players.
Not sure how townsend will do after richa and dcl is fit
Armstrong plays for Southampton -who Doesn't like to score

I like the foden and chilwell picks - if TAA is out for watford going to swop for chilwell and also bring in foden for Sarr.

Like is pointed out above there is a huge rotation risk here but with a solid bench (and a strong stomach) it might be worth it.

      Shaw->Livramento.
Then I'd want to improve Greenwood to the likes of Mbeumo, Saka, Townsend.

It’s not bad mate. I’ve got TAA too so I’m waiting on him before doing anything. Marcel/white are ok. Rudiger is ok. Shaw would be my transfer out if all are fit. Chilwell if you want the risk, or livra like someone else said.

Greenwood might be ok for the next week too.

I would just sit tight until Friday as plenty can happen till then.

One option could be TAA to Dias or Cancelo if he's doubtful for Watford, depending of course on how you feel about parting with TAA. 7.5 is a lot of cash to be sitting injured on one's bench IMO

No, you'd lose Semedo and Jota. Get in a decent 5.5ish like another Toffee, Arsenal or Palace midf.

Can't really know at the moment. Could be an injury that keeps him out for GW8 and maybe longer; on the other hand, it seems convenient when he has a meaningless 3rd place play-off for a tinpot cup compo coming up.

Usyk would be no easy fight because he too is a great boxer but yeah i think Tyson wins it.

It would probably be a horrible looking fight for the casual boxing fan because it would look more like a game of chess than a fight.

Tough one for me as those are 2 players who both need to go although I just feel that the 2 you want to bring in may be good for a few weeks you’ll have to sell them both eventually cause neither a long term picks imo. Maybe the comment above was alluding to that a little

      1. _Gunner
        • 9 Years

Armstrong's fixtures are really nice till GW12 are very good, also the return of Stuart Armstrong might help.
Traore' and King are both not getting any points

        1. Thomas Magnum
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 6 months ago

Yeah they both have to go, especially if King wasn’t injured and those fixtures. I looked at Armstrong as well, prefer him to Hwang myself but just worry with Southampton the few goals they do score might continue to be shared. He could also be gold though but for those fixtures it’s probably worth the risk and then can become like Toney later or something worst case if you don’t have him

Deontay took a bad beating there but i hope he comes back from it to fight again.

He is still one of the top 3 heavyweights in the world in my book and is as exciting a boxer that is out there.

I would still pay to watch Wilder vs Usyk/Joshua/Whyte/Joyce etc.

Wilder just came up against the best heavyweight of their generation. he tried his best and came up short,no shame in that.

He talks a lotta rubbish all the tike & still gets his arse whooped. 1st fight, 2nd fight & now 3rd fight.

He just won’t accept that Fury is better, his post match comment today also was also nonsense. Always finding excuses.

“I did my best, but it wasn’t good enough tonight. I’m not sure what happened," Wilder said post-fight. "I know that in training he did certain things, and I also knew that he didn’t come in at 277 pounds not to be a ballet dancer. He came to lean on me, try to rough me up and he succeeded.”

All boxers talk a lot of rubbish including Fury, they have to in a way to psych themselves up to step into the ring in what could be mortal combat.

Muhammad Ali said after he retired that he used be crapping himself when he stepped into the ring because he had to back up all the banter he made in the build up,the fear of that was probably one of the things that made him a true great.

It's tough coming to terms will a defeat but if Wilder eventually faces it he might come back a better man.
It took George Foreman years to come to terms with losing to Ali but when the did he was a way better person for it.

Give Deontay some time to reflect and he might say something more sporting rather than what he said in the heat of the moment.
