The best FPL midfielders for a Gameweek 8 Wildcard

With many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers activating their first Wildcard during the international break, we’ve picked out some of the best midfield options on offer across a range of price points.

This is an update of the series we did for Gameweek 7 Wildcarders, with fresh data and a couple of new targets for those deploying their chip this week.

However, it will also be of interest for those using ‘free’ transfers ahead of Gameweek 8.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

MOHAMED SALAH

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 2? 7

On current form, Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) is clearly the standout premium midfielder on offer.

Playing some of his best football since joining Liverpool, the Egyptian has already racked up six goals, four assists and 70 FPL points in just seven Premier League starts. His 28 goal attempts, 24 shots in the box and 4.89 expected goals (xG) are all league-leading totals, while his 10 points per match is more than any other player in the game.

The Reds’ attacking form is also worth touching on. Jurgen Klopp’s side have now scored 22 goals in their last seven matches in all competitions, averaging just under 20 shots per game, while they also lead their Premier League rivals for goals scored, big chances and xG.

Despite his premium price tag, Salah hands FPL managers a reliable captain option most weeks, and building your Gameweek 8 Wildcard squad around him is a wise move.

BRYAN MBEUMO

Brentford impress as Arsenal devoid of ideas without attacking stars 2

Despite a testing home fixture against Chelsea in Gameweek 8, Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) remains one of the most exciting budget midfielders available in FPL.

With Ivan Toney (£6.3m) dropping a little deeper and linking play in Brentford’s 3-5-2 formation, Mbeumo has been tasked with running in behind, and as a result, trumps his team-mate for goal attempts, big chances and xG.

Bryan Mbeumo v Ivan Toney goal threat 2021/22

His -1.74 xG delta suggests that he perhaps needs to work on his finishing, but the fact he is getting into good goalscoring positions is of course encouraging.

JACK GREALISH / PHIL FODEN

In an attempt to capitalise on Manchester City’s Gameweek 8 to 10 fixtures, investing in one of their attacking options makes a lot of sense.

However, with uncertainty surrounding Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and Riyad Mahrez‘s (£8.7m) game-time, plus Kevin De Bruyne’s (£11.9m) problematic price tag, team-mate Jack Grealish (£7.9m) may well be the best midfielder on offer.

The England international has now started every Premier League match for City since his £100m move from Aston Villa, and though there will surely be rotation at some stage, right now, he does feel like one of the more secure starters in Pep Guardiola’s XI.

Grealish marked his home debut against Norwich City with a goal and provided an assist in the 5-0 win over Arsenal. He also scored an impressive solo strike on his Champions League bow against RB Leipzig, and despite a fourth successive Premier League blank at Liverpool in Gameweek 7, has contributed significantly.

It’s also worth noting that the former Villa man is top or joint-top among his teammates for chances created, shots in the box, efforts on target, big chances, penalty box touches and expected goal involvement (xGI).

Meanwhile, Phil Foden (£7.9m) is an intriguing alternative, having impressed since his return from injury in Gameweek 6. The England international opened his 2021/22 account with a goal at Anfield, where he slotted in on the left of City’s front three. However, if you do choose to go down this route, ensuring you have a strong first substitute is vital.

RAPHINHA

Raphinha and Bamford both deliver returns as Saint-Maximin steals the Newcastle show 1

Raphinha (£6.6m) has turned in two of his best performances of the season in recent weeks, which included a goal – his third of the campaign – against West Ham United in Gameweek 6.

His -1.81 expected assists (xA) delta suggests that he has been unfortunate not to turn provider this term, and given that Leeds United have some appealing fixtures ahead, the Brazilian looks like an excellent Wildcard option.

However, his involvement with the Brazil national team should be monitored ahead of deadline, with his country due to take on Uruguay on Friday 15th October, just one day before the Whites visit Southampton in Gameweek 8.

ISMAILA SARR

Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 10

Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m) has already netted four Premier League goals this season, and as a result, ranks seventh amongst all midfielders for FPL points (40).

However, there are legitimate concerns around Watford’s attack. Outside of their convincing 3-1 win at Norwich City, they have created just two big chances against Aston Villa (h), Brighton and Hove Albion (a), Tottenham Hotspur (a), Wolverhampton Wanderers (h), Newcastle United (h) and Leeds United (a) combined.

New manager Claudio Ranieri will hope to make an immediate impact, but with a nightmare schedule between now and mid-December, it does feel like Sarr’s appeal is waning.

BUKAYO SAKA / EMILE SMITH ROWE

With ten points from their last four matches and an appealing schedule ahead, Arsenal’s budget midfielders are suddenly on the FPL radar.

Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) and Emile Smith Rowe (£5.4m) claimed season-high hauls in Gameweek 6, which coincided with both players being used in arguably their best positions. Interestingly, that system continued against Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 7, despite losing Granit Xhaka (£4.9m) to injury.

With Martin Ødegaard (£5.5m) installed as a no. 10 in Mikel Arteta’s 4-2-3-1 formation, Smith Rowe has featured on the left, but often drifts infield into more central areas where he can affect the game. On the opposite flank, Saka has generally stayed wider, but has racked up 10 penalty box touches since Gameweek 6.

The best FPL midfielders for a Gameweek 8 Wildcard 7

Bukayo Saka (left) and Emile Smith Rowe’s (right) touch heat maps Gameweeks 6 and 7

With fixtures now easing for Arsenal, Saka and Smith Rowe could offer value in midfield.

SON HEUNG-MIN

Buendia assists two Watkins goals as Son shines on pre-season return 1

Despite some worrying performances at Tottenham Hotspur in the opening weeks, Son Heung-min (£10.0m) has continued to produce, netting four goals and 42 FPL points in just six starts.

However, there are wider issues at Spurs. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have scored just six goals in seven Premier League matches, while the underlying numbers – they rank 18th for xG and 17th for goal attempts overall – are concerning.

That being said, they improved against Aston Villa last time out, and if you do feel like investing in one of the best finishers around, Newcastle United (a) does feel like a good fixture to attack.

CONOR GALLAGHER

Zaha and Maupay on target as Brighton earn late draw 4

In another energetic midfield display, Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) bagged an assist in Gameweek 6 after winning a first-half penalty against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The on-loan Chelsea man has now netted two goals and three assists since joining Crystal Palace, and ranks 12th amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

However, it is worth noting that the return of Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) has meant that he is no longer on set-pieces. Considering that a large chunk of his xA total arrived from dead-ball situations, it is a blow, but he still warrants attention.

Gallagher has been the driving force in Patrick Vieira’s 4-3-3 formation so far this season, regularly breaking forward into the attacking third, which is captured on his 2021/22 touch heatmap:

Fixtures could be better, but with Newcastle United’s shaky defence up next at Selhurst Park, Gallagher remains a decent budget option.

If you are comfortable spending a little more, Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) is an alternative. The 28-year-olds appeal has been given a boost having taken on penalty duties, though it is questionable whether he offers enough consistency to truly stake a claim.

DOUGLAS LUIZ

If using a 3-4-3, 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation on your Wildcard, it’s highly likely that you’ll be on the lookout for a budget midfielder. And while Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) and Allan (£4.6m) are two of the more popular options right now, Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz (£4.6m) has emerged as a viable alternative in recent matches.

Key to that has been a system change at Villa, which has seen Dean Smith line his troops up in a 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 shape. That has meant that the shackles are off central midfield pair Luiz and John McGinn (£5.8m), who no longer have as many defensive responsibilities with a back three stationed behind them.

Encouragingly, the Brazilian international’s creative numbers are on the up since Gameweek 4, as he ranks second amongst all midfielders for chances created and 10th for xA.

Having started 32 matches for Villa last term, his place in the starting XI is fairly secure and he should at least offer appearance points, with the potential for a few assists along the way. However, like Raphinha, his involvement with the Brazil national team should be monitored, as he may miss out in Gameweek 8.

ALSO CONSIDER…

In addition to the names detailed above, there are others who deserve a mention, too.

Mason Mount (£7.4m) is a nice mid-price option who has goal and assist potential, with the latter boosted by his share of set-pieces. You’d expect him to produce a steady stream of attacking returns in the coming weeks given Chelsea’s fixtures, and with his ownership down to just 8.7%, he could prove to be a clever addition.

Elsewhere, despite back-to-back blanks, Said Benrahma (£6.6m) remains a good option. However, the fixtures are turning for the worse for the Hammers, especially when paired with a demanding UEFA Europa League campaign, which is worth factoring in when considering their assets.

With Southampton’s fixtures easing, Stuart Armstrong (£5.8m) is an interesting differential. The 29-year-old chipped in with four goals and seven assists last term, and despite missing the first seven rounds, will probably feature for Scotland during the international break as he attempts to build-up his fitness.

Sadio Mane (£11.9m) has now provided either a goal or assist in five of his last six matches, and ranks second amongst all midfielders – only behind Salah – for goal attempts, shots in the box, big chances and xG.

Staying with Liverpool, the return of Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) from injury means that owners of Diogo Jota (£7.6m) will surely have to get used to rotation, but he has proven before that he can still deliver off of limited minutes. It does make him a tricky ‘buy’ though, especially as he also has a muscle problem, and if predicting Klopp’s XI isn’t your thing, Demarai Gray (£5.8m) – the ninth highest-scoring midfielder in FPL – might be worth a punt. Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.7m) and Andros Townsend (£5.6m) are alternative options at Everton, but it does perhaps feel like he is the Toffee with the most potential.

Demarai Gray v Andros Townsend v Abdoulaye Doucoure goal threat stats 2021/22

Before we finish up, there has been one glaring omission on this list: last season’s top scoring FPL asset, Bruno Fernandes (£11.8m). However, despite the fact that he could still be on penalties, he has registered just five shots in the box since Cristiano Ronaldo’s (£12.6m) arrival, and that makes it hard to justify the outlay. Manchester United’s fixtures also stiffen considerably over the next two months, leaving them bottom of our Season Ticker. Given that fixture swing, now may be a good time to hop off the likes of Mason Greenwood (£7.6m) and Paul Pogba (£7.7m), rather than bring them in on a Wildcard.

I have Jota, TAA, Rudiger, Lukaku, Raphinha

Any chance for at least 3 of them playing ?

Of those I'd be surprised to see Jota starting as it stands. Regardless of fitness. He hasn't exactly set the world alight of late. As for Raphina I think if he gets back he plays... to important to Leeds. The others who knows. Sure Lukaku will be fine though

Salah Son Grealish Foden Raph is mine as it stands - not having Mbeumbo feels like a mistake, but maybe I can ditch one for him in a few weeks (hopefully Toney does the business instead anyway)

I've pretty much just said he's on my bench, so not sure what you mean by 'psyched' 😆

also, he is playing an inside forward role supported by Jimenez, who has been a great creator of chances for years now - I'd bet A LOT that he will not be a 3-point average for the next 6/8/10 games

              This.

              I think he will.

People get hung up on the price of players, but he looks like he's going to be a regular starter and their man source of goals. His price is not connected to how well he'll do this season.

Kind of feel like this is an odd article, of the main suggestions:

    - 2 are unlikely to play in GW8 due to late returns
    - 1 is pointed out as having a "nightmare schedule"
    - 1 selection is pointed out as risky with a reliable bench option "vital"

      Okay, here's where I'm at.

Raphinha remains a good option for WC'ers even if he is a doubt, IMO. Booking in a transfer won't be for everyone, and someone like Livramento could step in this week.

Douglas Luiz - perhaps a doubt, but I'm pretty sure he hasn't played a minute for Brazil so far, and I wanted to flag up his recent stats after Villa switched formation.

Sarr - needs including, but I do think there are better.

Foden is risky, but that doesn't make him a bad option, and I'd be seriously tempted to include on a WC.

I think Smith will stick with it for now, we've beaten Everton and Man Utd in recent weeks, but one bad performance and he could of course switch it up.

Thanks for this article, do you see Bailey as a wing back as I understand he played this roles with his large return (only saw highlights so couldn't see where he was positioned) ? (He is on my radar for sure).

I don't see it, personally, unless we are chasing. Cash has been excellent this season, and Targett is too good to drop.

He'll probably compete with Watkins and Ings if we continue with this system.

            Ty

Will keep monitoring then. I find Villa attack strangely intriguing as a proposition. Cooling on Arsenal - they were wholly sterile against Brighton and disappointingly the Spurs game seems as if it may be an outlier.

Thoughts on Palace right now mate?

Zaha an option, or is Gallagher still the pick?

Think Palace are still a project team really and better irl than in FPL. Lots of puff and little output.

Zaha is on a list for me as he's not just on pens but getting into the inside left slot quite a bit. The interesting thing is whether he can combine with Edouard. Signs look promising so far. If that happens then he could be a goer as he might get assists as well as goals. If you check his assist record and strip out fantasy assists it is beyond awful and I suspect part of the reason he's such a dodgy Fpl asset - incapable of ticking over.

Other news is that Eze is back in full training which could change the balance a good deal - not least the position of Gallagher. I imagine he'll be a live proposition after next IB just when fixtures look more promising.

Yeah, it's that consistency with Zaha that worries me.

Lovely news on Eze, I didn't know that, what a player.

I know this is for PINGISSIMUS, but I still say Gallagher, but he did look tired against Leicester, the IB will do him good.

Olise stats when he came on were really impressive as was his performance and was also taking the set pieces.

I have never been impressed in the last 2 seasons with Luka's set pieces and Gallagher's (and Eze's) have been better as was Olise.

Be interesting to see what happens there.

A punt short term on Zaha is no bad thing, and it is the penalties aspect, but been impressed with Gallagher pressing and is the central midfielder who is in the box (sometimes late) or providing the cross when linking up play.

Olise looked the real deal - exciting eh 🙂

It's really premature I know but I'm wondering if he may not end up as the one to on in a few weeks time if the attack turns out to be anything. His assist record in a pretty moderate Reading side was spectacularly good and I think I can see why now.

He was decent for us last season, but he could be pretty inconsistent and be a bit streaky and is selfish at times. Being selfish is good for FPL players often of course though. He's very talented and could flourish in a side that's making a big effort to improve it's attacking capacity going forward

Yeah, he really does, very exciting.

Dougie has had him scouted for ages and wasted no time in getting him in when Vieira was appointed 🙂

Kind of reminds me of that Bolasie signing all those years ago, but on another level.

My Reading mate, says (like Eze was being spoken about the year before,) was easily their's and the young EPL player of the season 🙂

Also said that Reading are embargoed from signing players unless on a free, so Chelsea is paying all the wages for Drinkwater and getting Scott Dann. I know his release clause was £8m but couldn't wait for a bidding war.

But Eze, Zaha, Edouard Olise (Gallagher (for one season)),. Very exciting. 🙂

Admittedly it was 11 v 10 but playing in his peer group he seemed to be in a park football match - set up 5 goals in 60 minutes or so without looking as if he was trying.

Cheers for the reply, that's fair. I guess I'm looking at it in too arbitrary a way (mostly at people that might look at this as "get this bunch" rather than "pick one or two"). I don't like booking in transfers myself so agreed about Raphinha / Luiz, I just think that mixed with 2/3 others that are risky would make me (in this scenario) probably rather go without one for a week or two to have more security for this week if I was using WC, especially with the injury doubts about for some highly-owned players.

I did mention him mate, albeit near the bottom, but I would put Gray slightly ahead at Everton. Also not a massive fan of those fixtures. Just my opinion though, could be wrong.

oops sorry my mistake … if he has a tough fixture at that price I don’t mind rotating him with my 5th mid D Luiz or my two budget defenders White or Livra

Two out of Doucoure, Luiz, White or Livra will need to start

    Raya
    Trent Cancelo Matip
    (S)alah Doucoure Son Gray
    Antonio Vardy DCL

    Foster Duffy Livramento Bissouma

Hoping DCL and TAA start this weekend. Have Duffy and Livra to come on though.

I'm in a similar position mate, and currently on Salah, Son, Raphinha and Mbeumo.

I don't have an easy route to Grealish or Foden so will prob avoid, but if you can do it for free, I'd be tempted by the latter.

I'm on WC and midfield is the most difficult part to solve.

Currently sat on Salah Raphinha Brownhill but those last two slots are extremely difficult to decide upon and could be worth a ton of points.

    A) KdB Mbeumo
    B) Son Foden
    C) Foden Mount (+ TAA in defense)
    D) Son ESR (+ TAA in defense)

I'm not sure how much I trust Foden but the price isn't too prohibitive and his recent performances have been outstanding. KdB and Mbeumo being very low owned is also appealing and both have high ceilings.

Is anyone without their WC considering the FH chip? If the likes of TAA, James, Raphinha, Jota and Lukaku are out I wouldn't really want to sell them if they're back the next week. Provides the opportunity to keep these guys while tripling up on City for the Burnley game and including other potentially explosive differentials that you might not want to own long term like Son, Kane, Firmino, Robertson, Maupay, etc.

Yeah but in the past I've rarely used FH in a DGW. Usually end up using WC, TC and BB in those weeks and FH in a blank where the upside isn't that high.

              • 5 Years

FH and BB in the two biggest DGWs. TC in a minor DGW: bigger teams are more likely to have minor DGWs because they're the ones who get to cup finals, so a premium asset gets a minor DGW every season. WC and FTs to navigate blanks: be fine with having 8+ important players in a blank. Plan ahead. You don't need 11

I think it's best to hold, if you're at least sure you have 9-10 playing and have a couple that have a chance, while it could end up a frustrating week, the FH though could be much more important down the line if there's a DGW or something like a covid outbreak which might leave you missing 5-6 of your best players.

I probably wouldn't use a FT on King until you know further on the injury. Traore is an issue as I think Hwang and Podence will get the WF spots. Latest injury update on Jota doesn't seem great and Firmino stayed at the club during the IB. '

He could do well, I've got plenty wrong before! ... I'd just put a few others ahead of him right now, that's all.

you put gray and doucoure ahead of him 🙂
despite I saw him last weeks better than gray
may be it's a coin toss between those players for me

With DCL and Rich due back after the IB, I think Townsend becomes less appealing as a FPL pick. Gray and Doucoure more appealing.

but still playing the set-pieces and despite richarlison was on the pitch in burnley match
townsend got a goal and assist

DCL wasn't playing in that game. I think Townsend will be more assisting than scoring goals when everyone back playing. Look at the Southampton and Brighton games for reference when all were fit and starting

Looking to bring in this player called Salah. Is he any good?

I don’t understand. So you are saying you don’t have Salah? I feel a bit sick.

Might as well try and go against him for whole season 😀

Traore has better underlying stats, think he's a better bet, has to be due soon

    Sanchez Foster
    Azpi Rudiger Coufal Semedo Veltman
    Salah Bruno Greenwood Raphinha Allan
    Ings Antonio Toney

    1. WC or No

    2. Which players in this team are confirmed out for GW8?

    Thanks

      1. No
      2. Off the top of my head, none are 100% out

        1. I'm leaning to no WC now. Earlier, I was waiting for this GW to WC but now fearing there's uncertainty around my target players.
        2. This favours No WC then.

Plenty to shift here. Arguably, Bruno, Greenwood, Ings. Probably a couple of transfers would sort. No need to WC.

      Zero ruled out. Maybe Raphina

If OP has no FT, I would consider the WC, especially if Rudiger gets ruled out in the presser.

Thanks. Yes, I'd be replacing those players if on WC. Lukaku, Son, Mbeumo to come in.

i'd WC. It's a good week to do it and your team has a few issues

Thanks. Yes, there are issues. I'm now leaning to wait for one GW at least unless 2-3 players from this team are confirmed out for GW8.

On WC, which do you prefer?

    A. Rudiger (if fit) or other 5.7 def, Raphinha
    B. Dias, 6.1 mid

The mid would be rotated with Gray and Mbeumo (play 2 of 3 each week). Have Cancelo and Azpi.

    1. Fulchester's New Centr…

      A.

Wouldn't rotate Raph ever if fit

    Ramsdale 4.0
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Duffy Livramento
    Salah Foden Raphinha Mbeumo Luiz
    Lukaku Antonio Jimenez

    0.0 itb

    How’s this WC draft please?

    Thanks

First time I have been on here today so might have already been highlighted, but Rate My Unsustainable Business Model:

NB. not getting at FFS in bringing this up, I can understand why if someone offers you a few quid to promote their product and it seems that while there is money involved it is more benign than regular gambling...

Best and worst move of your season so far?

For me both involve Everton players - getting Gray in early has worked wonders, but Digne has been disastrous waste of cash

Everyone transferring Jota out, but I've seen nothing to suggest he's going to be heavily rotated.

Lots of good options in the £5-6m area with good fixtures. Why take the risk, esp with Firminio coming back.

That and the fact he’s injured.
