Mbeumo, Toney – or both? Which Brentford attacker to buy in FPL

Brentford are set to rise to the top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture difficulty once their Gameweek 8 clash with Chelsea is out of the way.

Their (mostly) favourable run stretches from Gameweeks 9-19, which takes us right the way through to Boxing Day.

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers currently on a Wildcard ought to be seriously thinking about the Bees’ assets for this period, then, while the rest of us will likely be eyeing up Thomas Frank’s side once Saturday’s visit of the European champions has been and gone.

Frontmen Ivan Toney (£6.4m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m), who are the two most-bought Brentford players of Gameweek 8, will be among those competing for our attention.

One is the penalty-taking talisman of their promotion-winning season, the other is a cheaper, ‘out of position’ midfielder who has matched his strike partner for goals scored in 2021/22.

But which of them is more deserving of our investment – and is there room for both in our FPL squads going forward? Our Premium Members article delves deeper.

MBEUMO v TONEY: THE COMPARISONS

Mbeumo stacks up very well next to Toney when it comes to goal threat, trumping or matching his strike partner for penalty box touches (32 v 29), goal attempts (17 v 16), shots in the box (11 v 11) and big chances (5 v 2).

Arguably the most eye-catching stat is ‘expected goals’ (xG) when penalties are taken out of the equation: Mbeumo’s figure (3.2) is almost three times that of Toney’s (1.11).

Toney has been the more creative of the two so far in 2021/22. Edging Mbeumo for chances created by 11-8, Toney has supplied four ‘big chances’ to his strike partner’s zero.

Indeed, the forward’s ‘expected assists’ (xA) tally is 1.91 to Mbeumo’s 0.54.

All of that leaves the two Brentford attackers pretty much level for expected goal involvement (xGI) overall: Mbeumo the greater goal threat from open play, Toney the man on penalties who looks like he may chip in with almost as many assists this season as goals.

MBEUMO AND TONEY: HOW THEY COMPARE TO OTHER FPL PLAYERS

I don’t understand going for Wilson at all.
Newcastle have been pretty garbage aside from ASM - who has taken Wilson’s role really.
Wilson isn’t even back from injury for sure.
They’ll probably have a new manager in the next week or so - waaaay too much unknown for me.

      Go Watkins over him.
      Saka > Mbeumo
      Armstrong > Toney/Hwang for me.

I don't like either front line choices. I also don't think KDB is worthy of the price tag until you see him click. I love the backline balance.

Maybe you could consider sth like KDB, Armstrong, Calum => Gundogan, Toney, Lukaku. This way you could rotate Lukaku/Ronaldo as well.

One of the questions I’m faced with on WC is whether or not Saka is worth the extramoney over Mbuemo?
    A) Mbuemo and a defender up to 4.8 (no Toney & can get leftover funds)
    B) Saka and Manquillo, 0itb (Manq will be sitting last on bench and Livra upgraded to 4th defender)
Whichever mid I go with would start basically weekly

gut says Saka will get more points over the season - are you saying Livra is starting every week in B?

He is good option, but not sure I'd want to start him week in/week out.

      1. Thomas Magnum
        • 6 Years
        14 days, 13 hours ago

Sorry, should’ve classified better in B Livra would be the 4th choice in a 3-4-3 set up so would come off the bench if one of the 3 don’t play or if one has a bad fixture he would be first man up

In that case the 4.8mill def you get for Mbuemo is just a bench option most weeks?

Id be happy to have Livra as back up, and Saka in my starting 11 over Mbeumo.

          1. Thomas Magnum
            • 6 Years

The 4.8 defender will likely either be first choice or in rotation with Tomiyasu. Looking at someone like a Brentford/Brighton defender and banking the cash, or even a punt on a more attacking Targett/Firpo

    5. BigRedDog
      • 4 Years
      14 days, 12 hours ago

I'd say pick the defenders you're thinking about in the post so people know what the options are.

That said, i'd go A, and if i had the time you have to consider your best defender option with fixtures, do that. Maybe Arsenal/BRE?

      1. Thomas Magnum
        • 6 Years
        14 days, 12 hours ago

You’re right that’s what I should’ve done, I left out the options just out of fear the post would get too long and ignored. As I touched above a little if A my defense would like look like TAA Dias Tomiyasu 4.8 Livra. And of course there’s different options like Tierney & a 4.4 instead say

I like the Tierney pick personally at 4.9, then at 4.4 you could play safe with Duffy/Veltman or more punty with Lamptey or Ait Nouri (who Wolves fans are crying out for as the left wing-back). Southampton/Brighton defence rotate quite well

Am in 2minds about keeping Alonso and hoping he starts, I guess we wont have any indication from Tuchel.

Raphina and Luiz are both looking unlikley to start, so I'm left with Brownhill from the bench vs Man City if I have any no shows.

    A) Save FT, hope Alonso starts (Along with Rudi/Lukaku flags) Gives me room to bring in TAA next week if I wanted without a hit.
    B) Alonso out for Kyle Waker in.
    C) -4 Alonso/Ronaldo(Lukaku if confirmed he is out) for TAA & Vardy

    Current lineup
    Ramsdale
    Cancelo - Rudigar* - Alonso - Tomiyasu - Duffy
    Salah - Saka
    Ronaldo - Lukaku* - Antonio
    Raphina - Luiz - Brownhill

I don't think Alonso starts. I don't particularly like Walker as a pick. I don't think you should take a hit with your team either. So basically I don't like A, B or C.

        lol - lovely!

Why not a fan of Walker? 5.5 he seems good value to me, and reckon he should be starting most weeks for City.

I'm adverse to hits, taken none so far this season, so C would be last on my list, but if kaku is confirmed out, I may do something along those lines.

    Who starts against Brentford?

    Alonso or Chilwell? And why

    1. BigRedDog
      • 4 Years
      14 days, 13 hours ago

IMO Chilwell has the position for the majority of the rest of the season. I think Tuchel prefers him. I think Alonso got the spot initially because Chilwell had a late pre-season, but now that Chilwell is back to fitness and back at his best, it's his spot to lose.

You'll do well to ignore the outside noise. Most advice from people any given week will be to buy the player that returned in the most recent gameweek.
Last GW, Mbuemo, Foden and Son all returned, whilst Sarr, Benrahma, Greenwood and Jota did not.
Id add Greenwood looks likely to lose his place in Man It's XI very soon.

It was the summer of 2002, I was off doing camp america, and one of the other leaders had a minidisk player, nifty i thought, he raved about it, so I purchased one before returning to these shores.
Think I ended up buying maybe 5 disks, while everyone around me had thier ipods with digital music and 100's of songs.

Agreed here. But I understand the son temptation most definitely but agreed not fully worth it

Thanks mate. No temptation to start livramento ahead of anyone? Don't know why my faith is so low in that everton west ham fixture

Because I believe Liverpool are without Allison and haven’t actually looked rock solid defensively, and Sarr is Watford’s talisman. Also Watford could get new manager bounce and you have West Ham cover on Antonio don’t see them scoring too many against Everton.

Something about torres in the next 3 is so tempting and I am not sure exactly why. But I'm going with him

Klopp: “They are all good, they are all in a good way, let me say it like this. So it looks really like Trent and Diogo will be fine, they will train with us tomorrow completely normal, that’s the plan.”

Excellent - just a slight IB injury for him then. But might still start on bench , though

I think he's a rotation risk dependant on opponent - but the ongoing Xhaka injury does give him a boost

I'd always felt it was likely I'd have Mbeumo and never really considered that I'd bring Toney in.

With the key goals of Wissa though recently I wonder if Mbeumo might get his minutes lowered over the coming weeks. With that in mind and the fact that Toney is on pens I've done a reversal and getting Toney in on my WC I think.

I think Toney is the best forward under 7.0
In midfield between 5.0 and 6.0 I think Gallagher, Townsend, Doucoure, ESM might all be good equally good options as Mbeumo

I also want to avoid a couple up on any attacking teams I think, especially an average side like Brentford. Same with West Ham and why I didn't have Benrahma with Antonio for a while which in hindsight would have worked for a bit!

    Sanchez | Steele
    Cancelo | Christensen | White | Livra | Amartey
    Salah | Raph | Saka | Gray | Gallagher
    Ronaldo | Lukaku | Dennis

Hit the WC button or sit tight for another week or so???

Only if you think Brentford will score loads of goals! I don't like the idea of attacking double-ups unless they're in a team that score more than average and also have a pair involved in almost every goal. Like Mane and Salah or Son and Kane
