Vardy and Mbeumo injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Brentford v Leicester City.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here, while you can read up on Arsenal v Aston Villa, Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur via the links below.

BRENTFORD 1-2 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Mathias Jorgensen (£4.5m) | Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), James Maddison (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) | Patson Daka (£7.1m)
  • Bonus: Tielemans x3, Jensen x2, Maddison x1, Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) x1

WHY WAS VARDY SUBSTITUTED AT HALF-TIME?

Vardy injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form 1

FPL’s joint-top scoring forward, Jamie Vardy (£10.8m), was substituted after 45 minutes in Gameweek 9.

Following the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that the veteran striker had felt something in his knee during the warm-up, and was taken off after his manager felt he wasn’t moving right in the first-half.

“He felt something in the warm-up, something in his knee but he felt OK to give it a go.

You could see he wasn’t as dynamic or moving like he normally would be, so there was no point risking it further if he’s sore. So, we gave him a breather and brought Patson on.

We will have a look at that tomorrow (Monday).” – Brendan Rodgers

His replacement – Patson Daka (£7.1m) – followed up his Gameweek 8 goal and subsequent four against Spartak Moscow with an assist. When on the pitch, he generally delivers, and if we were to see a period on the side-lines for Vardy, Daka would surely see huge Fantasy interest ahead of Arsenal (h) and Leeds United (a).

CONSISTENT TIELEMANS

Today’s match also saw a wonderful strike by Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), who has now produced two goals and two assists in his last five appearances. Regardless of the system – Leicester have used a 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent weeks – the Belgium midfielder is thriving, and after collecting maximum bonus, now sits joint-fifth amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

Statistically, amongst all sub-£7.0m midfielders, he ranks sixth for expected goal involvement (xGI), which is partly down to how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box. However, his creative numbers remain excellent.

Youri Tielemans xG shot map 2021/22

Sub £7.0m midfielders ranked by xGI 2021/22

Elsewhere, James Maddison (£6.7m) opened his 2021/22 account after a swift counter-attack, which Rodgers touched on after the game:

“He’s returning to the level, he’s been competitive when he hasn’t got the ball and that keeps the tempo. He showed some real moments of quality.

(The goal) will be really important for him. His job is to create and score goals. When you don’t have that, you do lose confident. We have been analysing his game, and what’s important for him to be at this level.

You can see in his last few performances, he’s gradually got better. I’m delighted for him.”

MBEUMO INJURY NEWS

As for Brentford, it was another encouraging display by Thomas Frank’s troops on Sunday, who dominated for large periods and narrowly won the xG battle.

Up until Tielemans struck, they were comfortably the better team, with Ivan Toney (£6.5m) having a goal controversially ruled out for offside and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) missing a good chance early on. However, the latter looked off the pace and was eventually hooked just before the hour mark. Frank later explained that the withdrawal of the ‘out of position’ midfielder was enforced.

“Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock will be out for [the EFL Cup on] Wednesday. Hopefully, they are available for Saturday, it is too early to say yet.

“Bryan is a minor hamstring issue. It is not a big one because that would rule him out for the next couple of weeks. We took him off as it was the early stages so, hopefully, he can be available for Saturday.” – Thomas Frank

Despite today’s setback, the Bees’ are about to embark on an appealing run, as they rank top of our season ticker for ease of fixture between Gameweeks 10 and 16:

Toney and Mbeumo (if fit) are the standout attacking options, but the defence shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, only Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea have a lower non-penalty xGC total so far this season:

“We deserved three points. We battered them for the first 45 minutes, there were only one team in the game.

I’m proud of the performance and the boys, and although we weren’t as dominant after half-time, and the only thing I can blame us for is the second goal.

We have to do better in terms of recovery and getting back in, but if we can replicate this game again and again, we’d win it seven times out of 10.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Jansson, Pinnock (Ajer 45), Canos, Onyeka (Ghoddos 77), Norgaard, Jensen, Henry, Toney, Mbeumo (Forss 57)

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Amartey, Evans, Soyuncu (Vestergaard 68), Pereira, Tielemans, Soumare, Castagne, Maddison (Perez 78), Vardy (Daka 45), Iheanacho

Best striker for a 1 week punt, from:

    a) Fimino (BHA)
    b) Aubameyang (lei)
    c) Vardy (ARS)
    d) Jesus (CRY)
    e) Someone else below £10.8m

Vardy was a major fail this GW but you will want him at home vs Arsenal.

      Praying he is fit.

I think I'm gonna go Aubameyang - 3 out of 4 fixtures are decent, 1 bad and 2 very tasty.

        lei / WAT / liv / NEW

I'll take the differential status as more upside as a Vardy alternative, if things work out.

Sarr + ASM > Mount + Hwang worth the hit?

Only issue would be a weakish bench of Livra, Williams, and sissoko

Weeks like this really drain the fun out of this game. Not because of the demoralising nature of a huge captain fail or seeing a huge red arrow despite what would normally be a good score, but because it really hammers home the fact that there is such a large amount of luck involved and chasing 'opportunities' is the only surefire way to fall into all the traps. And what follows is the realisation that only a long-term strategy has any hope of consistently getting the best of lady luck, and any sweet temptations along the way will only serve to be a hindrance in the long run.

I've therefore made a list of blindingly obvious observations, which will serve as a basis for a wildcard team.

    a) Salah and TAA essential
    b) City have the most reliable defence in the league for clean sheets
    c) Chelsea's defence gets a ridiculous amount of attacking returns but no one is nailed
    d) No other teams offer any sort of consistency
    e) All premium forwards offer poor value for money
    f) In fact, all other premiums offer poor value for money

    Team would therefore be:
    4.5 --- 4.0
    TAA --- Dias --- Chilwell --- 2nd Chelsea def --- Livramento
    Salah permacap --- 7.5-10 --- 7.5-10.0 --- 6.0-7.5 --- 4.4
    7.0-8.0 --- 7.0-8.0 --- 6.0-7.0

TAA, Dias, Salah(c) start every week
1 or 2 Chelsea defenders start every week - Chilwell + James if going for all-out attack, Chilwell + Alonso if going for guarantee of 1 starter, Chilwell + Rudiger is going for best chance of 2 starters
Livra offers potential of a 5-3-2 some weeks
2 expensive mid-price mids can alternate between Son, Rashford/Greenwood, Foden/Grealish/Mahrez, Jota, Mount/Havertz depending on form/fixtures
1 cheaper mid-price mid depending on form/fixtures, currently on Raphinha but plenty of options to switch
2 expensive mid-price forwards can alternate between Antonio, DCL, Bamford, Jimenez, Wilson depending on form/fixtures/injury
1 cheaper mid-price forward currently on Toney, but Hwang/Broja/watford forwards are options

I believe this gives a structure where you could feasibly get away with 0 transfers on defence for the entire season barring injury/drastic change in form, the 4.4 mid never plays leaving 2 bench options for rotation risks, and transfers can be focused on rotating 1 mid or 1 fwd each week in a set price range which makes decision making significantly easier.

Honestly, I don't even have a WC any more, but after a ridiculous weekend it just makes me feel better getting some thoughts out there. Stay strong, folks.

Agree with almost all of this. Have actually executed most of it, and having wonderful results. Premium forwards have not been necessary. A flexible lineup, accommodated by Livra, White and now Broja, makes decisions so much easier. I just need TAA back in. Nice post.

However, my 5th midf is ESR, giving me 13 outfield players I'm happy to start each GW, allowing me to relax over rests and short-term injuries.

Looks a good team though midfield isn't in great form bar Salah. Ronaldo taking a lot of your funds and scope for upgrades. Going Marcal or White to Omobamidele frees up about 0.5m. Saint-Maximin to Hwang gives you more cash and is possibly an upgrade.

Foden is very tempting. .95 npxG+xA/90, great fixtures, City attacker, performing very well at CF. Not nailed but maybe it's a Jota like situation where you keep for an extended period and take the benchings as they come.

    TAA Rudiger White *Marcal Livramento
    Salah Foden Greenwood Benrahma Brownhill
    *Vardy Jimenez Antonio

1 FT, 1.2 itb, WC available. Keep putting off the WC but have also taken 16 points of hits this season. But still not sure if I should pull the trigger. What moves would you look to make? Benrahma or Greenwood to Raphina? Losing Greenwood frees cash to get a City def in...

    Sitting at 870k.

Just wondering if balls to the walls triple up on CHE, LFC and City will be my route into the top 100k quicker than my current strategy.

And then switch back to a more stable approach should it work. Playing a very agressive game at the moment involving hits and my scores have been decent despite the hits. My rank at least has not taken a beating. Just a bit stuck not getting past 500k.

      Play the fixtures instead ?

Just ensure you have a nailed starting bench to ride out any minor injuries rather than have to put out fires with your transfers … then you can target the poorer teams with transfers each week and set up the mismatches

      • 3 Years

      Less hits.

You started last weeks -12 (I think?) with Bissouma + Hojbjerg, about this far out from the deadline. It's basically a -4 FT, because Hojbjerg is one your bench and one of your later moves could've been free instead.

Well, as stated on here earlier, I have fallen mightily this GW, a million place drop, yes, a million!
Received some great comments earlier as well, and I feel very stupid calling Havertz and being toxic because of it.

That said, I can’t take any more hits now at 1.8m OR, I’m just wondering, even being an experienced player, what do I do now?

    Sanchez
    Dias - Chillwell - Cancelo
    Benrahma - Raphinha - Salah - Son - Havertz
    Vardy - Toney

Was told a few times this is a good side and it will come good, just have to trust in the team I guess?

Eurgh, not even sure what I’m asking, just heavily deflated and defeated, I’m sad to say the least.

Sit tight for the moment and wait on further j jury new (Vardy, Raph).

I'd be looking to move Benrahma on, however vs. Villa perhaps one last run-out.

Target Mbeumo (if not injured for next GW) & the other in-form mids. Give Havertz another run-out.

Ditch Tierney when you get the chance.

Cheers Hazz! Yeah Benny gonna be moved on pretty soon, deserves a last run out for next game but that’s about it. Havertz can have another chance to return anything. Mbuemo is defo in the target list. Yeah Tierney I want rid of too haha, all takes time with no hits doesn’t it 🙂

Feel for ya. I was at 1.8m rank for ages and couldn't make any headways.
Was 1.6m this week and had an epic gameweek (113) now up to 700k, so ~900k swing the other way.

Nothing wrong with the starting defence but would look to move Tierney soon
      Benrahma on the chopping block
Vardy just unlucky, see what happens next update
I brought in Raphinha this week, would want to keep for Norwich if he plays
I'd be worried if Havertz plays midweek

Take a day (or 2) off FPL and re-visit

That is a solid side. According to "What If", I would be 47 points better right now if I had left my team alone. Something to be said for a more cautious approach regarding transfers...

Haha ain’t that the truth, caring less often equals more points (except hits), I’ve taken like 24 points in hits recently to bette the side, now it’ closer to where I want it to be I can adjust accordingly now and not play around with captaincy as much.

Autocap Salah for starters. Taking punts on captaincy going to shred you to pieces. Salah heading for 70% ownership now.

Oh, and get Chilwell and Trent. Keep Cancelo.

Then move to midfield after that.

I’ve not taken any hits for GW 10 yet, although if Havertz looks like not playing, could do Havertz to Foden and be done with the mistake?

That would be a good move for weeks to come.

Foden a massive differential at 8% and to be honest, Sterling in the naughty corner, Torres out long term. Foden nailed it seems.

First, take your mind off FPL - it's understandable to be sad when a game we invest so much time enough doesn't work out. A lot of FPL is luck and despite our research, we're still very capable of making poor decisions.

I'd ignore FPL completely until Thursday when we have all of the pressers information. Raph and Vardy are doubts and you may want Mbeumo.

Until then, relax and focus on other things. No point in thinking about it now.

Thanks man, it’s silly really but when drops this severe happen I can’t help but feel terrible as it’s a passion like many to play this game and do well. In 8th now in my ML where I was leading not long ago, like 56 points off first now. Tis only GW 9 though.

        1. FCSB

you've got experience on your side, you know what you're doing, you can make the comeback trust yourself and be patient... I myself struggle with patience of waiting for the next GW after a poor one, but it comes round and its the opportunity to bounce back and so on and so on.

dont let the 56 points put you off, you have lost that ground in such a short amount of time so you can make it back over the coming weeks - just chip away at it. I always refer back to a season maybe 3 or 4 years ago, i was 150 off the top with less than 10 GWs remaining, it was the season Kane scored a couple of hatricks in the remaining games, and i think i finished 2nd or 3rd a handful of points off top... you can turn it around, lots of opportunity especially as the games will come thick and fast after next IB

build your foundations now over the next couple of weeks and IB, then you will reap rewards of perseverance and patience I feel

          1. Salah’s Sonnet
            • 12 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

Couldn’t agree more there thanks for that. I tend to think “how the hell am I gonna recover from this?!”, but it happens naturally, and I have players no others have got in my ML, 56 pts is nothing at this stage so early.

Yeah I remember those Kane harries, I remember making serious gains then also as I had him for them.
So good that games come thick and fast after next IB, if I can grab two greens now before IB happens I’ll be chuft.

I think I have a pretty solid foundation now but Benny, Havertz need looking at as well as Tierney, so gonna address those and fill it out. Most important thing now I guess is to sit tight, don’t make rash moves and wait for info, hard when you drop this much in 1 GW, but I must do that.

Loads to do or nothing at all, depending on playing style … but I really feel you are doing yourself no favours by sticking with Scarlett, imho.

When we have rotation risked players like Dias, Chillwell (was Alonso), Cancelo & Havertz plus injury risk players in Tierney & Rapha it puts a huge pressure on your bench each week, and if you only have two starters on your bench then it also puts a huge pressure on your transfer moves and means you are always being forced into a hit each week rather than planning your hits over a few weeks in advance.

Personally I would let things roll and if you can build up two transfers in a few weeks then have a mini WC and sort out your formation with 3 up top (Hwang, Borja, Wilson, Antonio or whomever)

Cheers HFT, yeah agreed, like above it’s about now fine tuning and highlighting those players you mention, I would prefer to go back to a 343, but a good bench is needed for sure. Lots of options like Hwang and Borja now, even Antonio like you say is do’able.
Best thing I can do now is remain calm about it I suppose and not be rash.

Is actually a solid team, just a weird week where captain was vital.

You add in one of Mount/Foden and/or Livra/2nd Chelsea DEF and you're a green arrow. It's like 2-3 pieces different for a massive swing.

So I'd stick the course and you'll get some luck the other way.

Indeed, such small margins and huge swings because of it. Jsut foolish captain pick, but if he did well and Salah flopped then it’s genius haha, just all swings and roundabouts, but this swing was into the seventh circle of hell pretty much haha! One of Mount/Foden will probs be brought in should I know more nearer deadline.

Yep, all the stars were aligned and was a risky but direct action given all what we knew for the opportunity to pounce, but it just wasn’t to be, maybe he can pay me back against NEW if he looks like playing, then look at getting rid, or even to Foden this GW if Havertz doesn’t look like starting.

Some great momentum for me this week
If Raphinha is ruled out for Norwich, would you take -4 based on these moves

Raphinha --> Mount (Mbeumo an option as well)
Armstrong --> Hwang (Toney an option as well)

    A) Make one of these moves, can't do Mount in one move with only 0.4m itb
    B) -4
    C) Roll ft with just the one bench player

    Guiata
    Trent Dias James Livra
    Salah Foden Gray Raphinha*
    Kane Antonio
    Steer White Armstrong Gilmour

No I wouldn't. Mount is just as likely to start as a sub as get 90 minutes. Hwang's goals are flattering him at the moment because WOL create very little in terms of chances.

Terrible Week. 64 points. Drop from 9k to 83k.

    Guaita
    TAA Reece Cancelo
    Salah(C) Havertz Raphinha Sarr
    Ronaldo Antonio Toney

    1 FT. 0 ITB.

    Any Suggestions?

Ronaldo to Kane (I know they play each other) but i'd much rather Spurs fixtures coming up
Otherwise would be inclined to roll

Assuming Raph is fit I’d either save or downgrade Ronny to give you cash for Havertz/Sarr -> Son next week.

Any obvious moves here if Raph & Vardy are both passed fit? Probably save a FT right?

    Ramsdale
    Trent, Cancelo, Dias, Chilwell
    Salah, Foden, Raphina, Saka
    Vardy, Antonio

    Foster, Livramento, Brownhill, Davis
    Bank 1.1m, 1FT, no WC
