Vardy and Mbeumo injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Brentford v Leicester City.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here, while you can read up on Arsenal v Aston Villa, Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur via the links below.

BRENTFORD 1-2 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Mathias Jorgensen (£4.5m) | Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), James Maddison (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) | Patson Daka (£7.1m)
  • Bonus: Tielemans x3, Jensen x2, Maddison x1, Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) x1

WHY WAS VARDY SUBSTITUTED AT HALF-TIME?

Vardy injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form 1

FPL’s joint-top scoring forward, Jamie Vardy (£10.8m), was substituted after 45 minutes in Gameweek 9.

Following the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that the veteran striker had felt something in his knee during the warm-up, and was taken off after his manager felt he wasn’t moving right in the first-half.

“He felt something in the warm-up, something in his knee but he felt OK to give it a go.

You could see he wasn’t as dynamic or moving like he normally would be, so there was no point risking it further if he’s sore. So, we gave him a breather and brought Patson on.

We will have a look at that tomorrow (Monday).” – Brendan Rodgers

His replacement – Patson Daka (£7.1m) – followed up his Gameweek 8 goal and subsequent four against Spartak Moscow with an assist. When on the pitch, he generally delivers, and if we were to see a period on the side-lines for Vardy, Daka would surely see huge Fantasy interest ahead of Arsenal (h) and Leeds United (a).

CONSISTENT TIELEMANS

Today’s match also saw a wonderful strike by Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), who has now produced two goals and two assists in his last five appearances. Regardless of the system – Leicester have used a 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent weeks – the Belgium midfielder is thriving, and after collecting maximum bonus, now sits joint-fifth amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

Statistically, amongst all sub-£7.0m midfielders, he ranks sixth for expected goal involvement (xGI), which is partly down to how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box. However, his creative numbers remain excellent.

Youri Tielemans xG shot map 2021/22

Sub £7.0m midfielders ranked by xGI 2021/22

Elsewhere, James Maddison (£6.7m) opened his 2021/22 account after a swift counter-attack, which Rodgers touched on after the game:

“He’s returning to the level, he’s been competitive when he hasn’t got the ball and that keeps the tempo. He showed some real moments of quality.

(The goal) will be really important for him. His job is to create and score goals. When you don’t have that, you do lose confident. We have been analysing his game, and what’s important for him to be at this level.

You can see in his last few performances, he’s gradually got better. I’m delighted for him.”

MBEUMO INJURY NEWS

As for Brentford, it was another encouraging display by Thomas Frank’s troops on Sunday, who dominated for large periods and narrowly won the xG battle.

Up until Tielemans struck, they were comfortably the better team, with Ivan Toney (£6.5m) having a goal controversially ruled out for offside and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) missing a good chance early on. However, the latter looked off the pace and was eventually hooked just before the hour mark. Frank later explained that the withdrawal of the ‘out of position’ midfielder was enforced.

“Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock will be out for [the EFL Cup on] Wednesday. Hopefully, they are available for Saturday, it is too early to say yet.

“Bryan is a minor hamstring issue. It is not a big one because that would rule him out for the next couple of weeks. We took him off as it was the early stages so, hopefully, he can be available for Saturday.” – Thomas Frank

Despite today’s setback, the Bees’ are about to embark on an appealing run, as they rank top of our season ticker for ease of fixture between Gameweeks 10 and 16:

Toney and Mbeumo (if fit) are the standout attacking options, but the defence shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, only Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea have a lower non-penalty xGC total so far this season:

“We deserved three points. We battered them for the first 45 minutes, there were only one team in the game.

I’m proud of the performance and the boys, and although we weren’t as dominant after half-time, and the only thing I can blame us for is the second goal.

We have to do better in terms of recovery and getting back in, but if we can replicate this game again and again, we’d win it seven times out of 10.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Jansson, Pinnock (Ajer 45), Canos, Onyeka (Ghoddos 77), Norgaard, Jensen, Henry, Toney, Mbeumo (Forss 57)

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Amartey, Evans, Soyuncu (Vestergaard 68), Pereira, Tielemans, Soumare, Castagne, Maddison (Perez 78), Vardy (Daka 45), Iheanacho

Got 112 ( -12), so Did pretty well this GW. but if I didn't take the hit, I would have scored even more as I did Antonio+Doucoure---->Vardy+Havertz. Would have got Antonio points plus Livramentio would have come on for Doucoure.

Lesson learnt, most of the times it is better not to take hits if you can field 11 players.

But did the same thing again this GW, lol already took a -4 for Havertz+Edouard---->Mount+ Hwang. The way my luck is going, I am sure Havertz and Edouars will outscore Mount + Edouard this GW.

True. If you can field 11 players its not wise to take hits, most of the time. But some Pundits here will say a lot of things to you.

Which move you are referring to? This week move of Havertz+Edouard to Mount+ Hwang?

Or last week move of Antonio + Doucoure to Vardy+ havertz. It was -8 for those 2 moves as total hit taken was -12 for last GW

This week's. Hwang does not look that impressive I think he is outperforming. Over the next 5 I couldn't confidently say he will beat Edouard and with a -4 headstart I'd pick Edouard.

Havertz to Mount is sideways. It could easily be Havertz getting the hat trick in the next match.

I have been owning Edouard for 4 GWs now, I saw the matches, he just didn't look that appealing to me, he doesn't get into good positions I thought. Benteke looks more threatening

    On a WC right now.
Feel like premium strikers are failing from giving the points that they should.

What do you think of this?:

    Ederson (Foster)
Chilwell - James - Cancelo - Trent (Duffy)
Salah - KDB - Smith Rowe - Mount (Gilmour)
    Antonio - Toney (Hwang)

KDB should start regulary from now on due to his form.

Peak FPL week done and dusted and this is where it's left Top 10K Finally

New leader with a magical 138 is Aniolki Asi leaping up from unexciting decency to top 10K status. Only 3 other teams left there now FireBreathinDuckie, Andy S and Holmes. On the face of it Abra Dubravka is the big loser after that minus 24 but his squad is now really well set up and he was a Trent benching away from a huge coup.

Elsewhere not such a great week for the template league, Fewer teams now in range of one point a week variance and a staggering number of failed transfers.

The template saw a fairly predictable switch with Vardy going from just 3 owners to over 50%. Brentford are now very template but as yet the double up is differential with just 6 on it. City mids are as yet very differential with just 20 owners overall. Interestingly only 4 teams are on the triple up of rampant Liverpool.

Favourite moment? Sanchez outpointing Cancelo and Dias combined.

Despite taking a hit to do Jota and Ronaldo to Havertz and Vardy this week I still managed to extend my lead in my minileague to 65 points. I captained Salah and my main rival went Aubameyang.

With that in mind, and the fact that I only really care about this minileague and not so much overall rank, would you take a couple of hits to get out Alonso, Vardy (pending injury news) and either Sarr or Havertz? Just feel like this is a chance to spend a couple of points and put some fires out.

If you're 65 points ahead and have even amount of chips as opponent then just play safe. I would be avoiding hits unless absolutely necessary in that position.

I’ve got all my chips except first wildcard. He played his free hit this week and has used his wildcard. Third place is eighty behind me and has played his wildcard and bench boost. Fourth place is ninety behind and has used all his chips. 😆

So no hits and sort them out one by one you reckon?

Here's an outrageous idea, Mount to Raphinha if Raphinha is fit?

I know Mount has Newcastle, but he isn't that potent in front of goal and Norwich are terrible and a defender short.

    1. TheTinman
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

I think it's a bad move. Chelsea have great fixtures and are roaring. Mount is a differential compared to Raph. Leeds have been spluttering. Raph has had niggly injuries all season, I would take him out if it wasn't for nice fixtures.

Also on Newcastle, we have big issues with gaps between midfield and defence. Not sure when to press or when to drop off. Meaning it's very easy to pass through the lines and Nr10s tend to be doing well against us at the moment.

Is having 3 each from Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea on a WC too risky - could end up getting 8-9 out on a busy rotation week. Or just take 2 each and fill up with nailed assets to ensure a consistent solid XI? Before anybody points it out, I will also be changing my team name to 'The Kneejerkers'.

    Something like:

    Ederson xxx
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell James xxx
    Salah Jota Mount Foden xxx
    xxx xxx xxx

Thanks, might look at Gray to Mount and Sanchez to Raya

Still need to be convinced in Hwang - could become Jimenez and Raya to Toney

Promised myself I wouldn't get involved in pep roulette this season and here I am with Laporte and jesus and now I'm in deep with tichel roulette with James Christensen and Havertz jump ship or hold?
    Ramsdale
    James Christensen Laporte
    Salah Raph Havertz Townsend
    Antonio Jesus CR7

    Foster Livramento Luiz Manquillo

    Cheers

I would just roll. Salah aside there are no certainties in this season's fpl

So sick of Raph, seems permanently on international break, mildly injured and getting subbed early or blanking, with the odd single digit haul sprinkled in

A part of me hopes he is out this weekend so I can just switch him to Mount

Yeah, he’s not delivery. Frustrating because he should be a season keeper at that price in an attacking side

It seems to me like all his niggly injuries are maybe effecting his movement and causing other niggly injuries. Fixtures and himself are too good to swap but I know exactly what you mean. I'm looking for an excuse to get rid too

I will wait for news of course, the other problem is Leeds just being generally bad this season

Agreed I want to get rid but feels like a luxury transfer.

Giving him this GW against Norwich if fit, then reassess

IMO Raphina has been popular due to eye test and last year's performances. Clearly undervalued considering these points but is he? He is now playing in a poor Leeds side compared to last year. His ceiling is not that high and he has no assist potential since Bamford's injury. On top of that he is in the Brazil side. He came off injured and a wait and see on how serious. A long winded way of saying get ESR.

Looking at 5 at the back next week. A few guys I'd like to change.
Would you just keep as is or take hit(s) or even WC and be done with it?

    Sanchez.
    TAA, Rudiger, Chilwell, Livramento, Cancelo.
    Salah, Raphinha,
    Vardy, Jimenez, Anthonio.
    Bachmann, Gray, Benrahma, Bissouma.
    0ft, 1.1 ITB. WC intact.

    Bigger priority to transfer out:

    A)Vardy
    B) Adam Armstrong

Wait for Vardy news. If he's expected to be out for the weekend then you may not want a 10.5m player benched.

Armstrong to Hwang looks good if you don't already own

I'm stuck trying to get Armstrong out but don't want Hwang, Borja or King so need to do it with 2FT for funds...

Hwang and Broja can be short term punts as both have good 4/5 fixtures. I am sure they can match 7/8 million forwards for this period. Then we can assess later who to get.

I like Bailey, but there are injury and rotation risks.
      Saka seems safe.

Cornet at Burnley a great punt IMO. I was 1 click away from doing it last week.

Anyway. The 4 you want rid of are a good call and the 4 you want are good calls too. Kovacic can wait and taking Allan out could be held back.
