Will Mason Mount be fit for FPL Gameweek 11?

Our review of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 10 action continues with Newcastle United v Chelsea.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here, while Sunday’s matches saw Leeds beat Norwich and West Ham trounce 10-man Aston Villa.

Newcastle United 0-3 Chelsea

  • Goals: Reece James (£5.7m) x2, Jorginho (£5.8m) penalty
  • Assists: Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.4m), Kai Havertz (£8.1m)
  • Bonus: James x3, Jorginho x2, Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) x2

MOUNT UPDATE

The most-bought player of Gameweek 10, Mason Mount (£7.6m), failed to make Chelsea’s matchday squad on Saturday.

The Blues confirmed that the midfielder missed out through illness, with Thomas Tuchel offering the following update:

“[Mount] should have started but he got ill overnight and so we sent him home to London so that we can take care of him better and that he can recover better.” – Thomas Tuchel on Mason Mount

When “illness” is cited these days, the concern is that it could be Covid-related and lead to an absence of more than one fixture.

The player himself eased those fears on social media:

“Gutted to have missed the game but what a performance from the lads to get the win. Woke up and didn’t feel 100% (non COVID related) but will hopefully be fully recovered over the next couple of days.” – Mason Mount

Monday brought news that Mount is not fit enough to make the trip to Malmo for Tuesday’s Champions League tie, so the flag looks set to remain on the midfielder until Tuchel’s pre-Gameweek 11 presser:

“For Mason, he does not feel really better. To stop any speculation, it’s not Covid – he’s just ill and does not feel good enough to take part in training and, of course, take part in the trip to Malmo.” – Thomas Tuchel

BEST CHELSEA DEFENDERS?

Mount illness latest as 2

“Which Chelsea defender(s) should I buy” has perhaps been the most consistently asked question on these pages over the last few months, with the answers changing from week to week.

The perceived wisdom that a double-up on Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) and Reece James (£5.7m) is too risky, given Tuchel’s predilection for rotation at wing-back, is certainly being challenged, with the pair racking up a combined six goals and 78 points over the last four Gameweeks alone.

James’s superbly taken brace against Newcastle made him Chelsea’s leading goalscorer in the top flight this season and despite four ‘one pointers’ in his seven Premier League appearances in 2021/22, James is second only to Chilwell for points per match among FPL defenders.

Tuchel talked of the importance of goal contributions from his wing-backs after full-time:

“Reece is allowed to come inside, that’s not a problem. We have players in all the spaces in which we want to be dangerous. So if there is a winger waiting wide, it is absolutely allowed to attack the half-space from wing-back.

“In general, I think every team in this system does this. We need the wing-backs to arrive in the box at the end of our attacks to increase the chance of scoring and creating goal chances.” – Thomas Tuchel

Those comments followed similar ones from his pre-match presser, in which he hinted that the Blues were encouraging James to get forward even more – although he also namechecked positional rivals Marcos Alonso (£5.6m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.1m) when discussing Saturday’s starters:

“It’s a very important position, the system that we play. Of course, a very important part of the position is to arrive in the box, and to create a goal threat from the position.

“This is what we want and what we demand. I’m happy that Chilly is scoring and reaching his full potential and pushing limits constantly because it fits pretty perfectly his personal player profile.

“For Reece, you see sometimes he plays in the back three but this means that I would not do this with Chilly. His character means he is not the type of guy to play in the back-three, he takes more risk and he is more free to arrive in offensive positions.

“For Reece, we have to encourage him to trust himself to arrive in the box and be dangerous because he can be a real threat, physically and actually also technically in finishing some fantastic goals against Arsenal and Norwich.

“I am happy with everybody, Marcos [Alonso] was very strong at the beginning, Chilly is now very strong, and Azpi and Reece are very strong at right wing-back. Callum made a huge step in the last game and took one for the team because everybody was out.” – Thomas Tuchel

Above: Premier League defenders sorted by minutes per penalty box touch (minimum of 90 minutes played)

It should be said that Chilwell and James both boast shot-to-goal conversion rates of over 40% this season, percentages that would be unsustainable for even forwards over the course of a campaign, let alone two wing-backs.

We may have hit peak Chilwell and James already, then, with everything coming together (fixtures against two of the worst defences in the division, some perfect execution of low-percentage chances, successive starts) in the last few weeks.

The Blues’ superb defensive record means that a double-up on their backline remains a viable tactic now and going forward, but with 13 competitive matches to contest in the space of 42 days starting from Gameweek 12 and rotation likely to ramp up elsewhere in the division over Christmas, the slightly-more-secure Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m) might still be the sensible play alongside one of Chilwell or the feast-or-famine James.

CHELSEA STRIKERS STRUGGLING FOR GOALS

Kai Havertz (£8.1m) banked an assist for Jorginho‘s (£5.8m) second-half penalty but it was another game without a goal for not just the German but the nominated spearhead of Chelsea’s attack.

Multiple spurned opportunities from the likes of Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner (£8.6m) when playing in the role in the past suggests the personnel have to shoulder some of the blame but it’s also true that Tuchel’s system requires a bit of sacrificial work from whoever is leading the line, something the Chelsea boss alluded to in his post-match press conference when talking about James’s first goal:

“We were dangerous on the first post with Kai [Havertz], the middle of the goal with Ross [Barkley], and then the second post even with Ruben [Loftus-Cheek]. Then it’s possible to score on the far post.

“This is why sometimes our strikers are sacrificing to create space and chances for the others. It will always be like this.” – Thomas Tuchel

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) should return to fitness in Gameweek 12 but with the Blues perhaps yet to figure out a way to get the best out of their star striker, on top of what is discussed above, there likely won’t be a huge rush for his services.

TARGET NEWCASTLE

Mount illness latest as 1

The Magpies had actually kept Chelsea at bay until midway through the second half before the inevitable happened.

Interim manager Graeme Jones has seemingly gone back to basics and targeted a more defence-first approach, turning to a 5-3-2 and citing the need for clean sheets as a start point.

For 65 minutes we were competitive. That was the game plan. We had a little bit of momentum in their half when the ball could have dropped our way.

“I think it needs a fresh face. I think the fans were incredible today. It’s not a style of football the fans are accustomed to, we want to attack people, we want to score goals. But this is the stage we’re in.

“We haven’t kept enough clean sheets this season and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out what the need is at the minute.
” – Graeme Jones

Unless there is a change of manager before the weekend, Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) and co won’t have any sleepless nights ahead of the Gameweek 11 meeting at the Amex.

Newcastle XI: Darlow, Manquillo, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Krafth, Hayden (Almiron 66), S.Longstaff (Shelvey 81), Fraser (Willock 66), Saint-Maximin, Wilson.

Chelsea XI:
Mendy, Christensen, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, James, Kante (Loftus-Cheek 64), Jorginho, Chilwell, Ziyech (Barkley 64), Hudson-Odoi (Saul 88), Havertz.

Strong rumors of it. I think it'll happen. And they wouldn't sack Nuno if they weren't confident of his replacement.

So weird management at the moment. All the hassle with Conte last summer, then ending up with Nuno... And now most likely Conte comes in with original contract demands but without them giving him a proper chance to build or familiarise his team. And that stuff with Kane, I mean come on! Good luck getting that 150 million now when guy has lost his will to play.

I wouldn't rule out 3-5-2, as it probably suits Romero, Ndomeble, Kane and Son, but Doherty won't be part of it. I'm not convinced that Royal or Reguilon carry the attacking threat needed, but they can at least get up and down.

Don’t think Conte will go somewhere mid-season

His style is so reliant on a sadistic pre-season of vomit-inducing fitness work that bringing him in mid-way would probably be counter productive

Could be wrong though, wouldn’t be the first time

Best move for this sorry bunch?

    A) Walker >> Chilwell / James

I remember Azpi getting the odd rest last season and it would be a big surprise, people just put it down to age then. I guess even having the C on your arm doesn't mean much if you're a Chelsea player. Azpi will have his fun in the sun soon enough I am sure, hopefully he gets some runs at RWB especially

Not sure if he's been protected due to those small injuries he's been picking up, but it's massively frustrating to own him atm.

Quite possibly, plus having the more winnable fixtures recently could have helped Tuchel make that decision. But if I owned I would maybe hope for a haul before the fixture congestion, then sell. I think owning any Chelsea player that isn't Mendy (and we know even he will be rested again) will be very hit or miss come the added Christmas rotation.

It's good he can play RWB & RCB but if he won't play WB more often than not then then he probably has got to go because doubt he gets many points at CB. Just unfortunate that Chilwell/James have exploded in his absence

Azpi did this to me toward the end of last season, brought him in as the 'nailed' option (12 consecutive Prem starts) and proceeded to get benched for two cleanies against Brighton + Fulham, sold before the City game where he scored.

I've seen it suggested that tuchel may prefer to play alonso over Chilwell v Burnley due to alonsos height and physical presence

This is putting me off the dias to chilwell move slightly - and may save 2fts for son / kane after the break

Is this a viable concern? I know alonso got the Burnley game last season

this is the inbuilt danger you have to accept if you go for both/either-or james and chilwell. still worth owning imo but Tuchel did this at dortmund and will do it at chelsea to.

Nah won't second guess that. If Alonso starts and plays the UCL game which I expect him to (Malmo at home) then Chilwell will start BUR.

We thought this might happen for Brentford since they are very tall and physical but they still went Chilwell.

Just dropped in price as well, will be between him and Cucurella for me at the 5.0 mark. Even Coufal is due a fixture swing soon and he's even cheaper so there's alternatives, but if the 3-5-2 comes to fruition then he looks good

He will be hard to drop on current form, that is for certain. Luckily for us there's still a few weeks until WHU's fixtures shift, and it is a nice shift as well. So will definitely monitor. Would probably target Cucu/Regui first unless Coufal has some kind of set back

For me, the bulk of the criticism should rest on sulky Harry. He cost NES his job as the manager couldn't drop him whilst he stank out the team on the pitch. It will take a heck of a tough manager to put a rocket up his posterior and get things moving forward.

    1. Ginkapo FPL
      • 12 Years

Sulky Harry who stuck by the team through three years of, 'just one more year please' from Levy? I'm not surprised he is sulky.

Notice how he is playing ok in cups where there is a chance of silverware but not playing in the league where he has nothing to play for.

Andy has a point. TBH Harry has not been performing and fans will naturally direct this narrative. Harry must not forget, unlike Messi, Ronaldo, even Salah, he does not posses their natural skills. Hard work and determination are his strong points. He will set himself back more quickly if he is carrying an attitude.

I am lucky enough to watch every game if I so choose, unlike many in blighty.
I can offer my own view of how I saw the games so far:
Foxes 0 Gunners 2: I have lost all the points ESR has accumulated even though I owned him. I did not trust my own assessment. He is class on the ball and Arsenal, still an up and down team, seem to be getting it right. Partey, Tavares, and the Auba Laca link play all bode well for Arsenal. No better value in the game than ESR IMO. Leicester play well when Tielemans plays well; he was in and out in this game and he won't keep scoring worldies. I do think Iheanacho will prove good value when he gets the gametime he deserves. Both teams are inconsistent so far but I believe Vardy won't keep up his PPG. Will Tierney get his place back?
Burnley 3 Brentford 0: Christmas is over for Brentford? Not yet. I do think they will struggle with low block though. They missed Mbeumo and Toney needs to revert back to a more high lying forward. Cornet has been class and this game was no exception. Once again I went against my own thoughts and stuck with players with a higher EO. He could turn out to be gold.
Liverpool 2 Brighton 2: I did not see the whole match but I am not surprised Pool leaked goals. It has been on the cards. Brighton are not going away. Like playing Citeh in the second half, the coach chooses his moment to pick up the game. The Pool high press can be tiring and Brighton learned that, as with Citeh. No reason to lose Brighton defensive assets. Pool need a settled midfield.
Citeh 0 Palace 2: Citeh were superior, even down to 10 men. One of those days when they needed a Center Forward. Palace were brilliant vs Arsenal but they got a freebie on this occasion IMO. Cancelo can be exposed. Gallagher and Zaha took advantage. The jury is still out whether either will be long term better prospects than ESR, Saka, Cornet and Mbeumo. Expect a rest for Cancelo fairly soon.
Newcastle 0 Chelski 3: Sit up and watch. Rjames was out of this world both him and Chilwell should be classed as at least midfielders. Chelski get results no matter how they play but they are living on borrowed time in terms of clean sheets. Newcastle have nothing to offer and Wilson is the only one to defy XGI. Nothing can be learned from this game IMO. Just enjoy ASM when you have a chance.
Watford 0 Soton 1: Livramento will continue to get points and Watford will continue to drop them. A shame Broja is injured, because like Cornet, he is class in the making. Soton have improved a a defensive unit and Watford don't have one. McCarthy could be a nice keeper punt. Get Sarr when he moves to another club.
Spurs 0 ManU 3: I am not a fan of ManU for sure but I must say, they actually played to their strengths. Spurs did the opposite. Nuno can partly blame Harry Kane for his demise. Spurs were a team who were not playing for their manager. Did Harry play the first 3 games? ManU fans moan about MacFred but nothing wrong with them in this game. 2 old farts (Ron and Cav) will not be able to play every 3 days so expect changes. It will be interesting to see Sancho as a wing back. Greenwood is going to suffer big time now the Glazers have got their meal ticket in Ronaldo. Maybe Pogba can play with one of MacFred in this set up. Bruno will have to play deeper. Shaw may improve now. Spurs wingbacks could be worth it when Conte arrives and fixtures improve.
Norwich 1 Leeds 2: Norwich were awful, particularly Krull. Leeds were better but not that much. Raphina got points and is class. Rodrigo improved this week, maybe due to Phillips feeding him more.
Villa 1 Hammers 4: Antonio assisted the assister twice and not that great TBH. I was more impressed with Bowen. Watkins could be an asset without Ings and was lively in a game spoiled somewhat with the red card. (there could have been 2 in the same passage of play) Johnson was very good and it is a shame Coufal will come in for him. Benrahma can continue to tick over but West Ham's continuous improvement is down to Rice as much as the manager.

We're not pros here, so who's complaining. The part about the budget mids and which being the best long term was helpful as that is what I a trying to sort out atm. Have three sports in my side right now who are currently occupied by CHO, Mbeumo & Raphinha and not entirely pleased with them atm, so trying to work out which are the two best sub 6 and then one 6+ player to go with will bother me for a while.

Yea, I’ve got Toney and for teams with viable striker & midfield options i side with the striker if similar price purely because there are so many mid options right now. You might be right about Gallagher but I’ve made my bed with him and swopping for cornet (my preference) is way down the priority order. The son challenge will be getting him early or accepting a 0.2/0.3 increase over the break for certainty he comes back safely.

Great summary. I watched the norwich game and I thought they were decent, especially normann in midfield. Nothing of interest FPL-wise though.

I just thought it was more of Leeds being poor. You are right about Normann. He did start to waste passes and shots as the game went on though.

    Sanchez
    Trent James Livramento White
    Salah Raphinha Havertz Gray
    Vardy Toney

    Steele Dias Sarr Scarlett
    3.1m 1FT

    A) Roll FT in to international break
    B) Sarr to Smith Rowe (bench Gray)
    C) Havertz to Son (if Lukaku fit)

Hardly top priority but down to Brownhill or across to Norwegian lad at Norwich or even Bissouma who seems to have been welcomed back (for now)

Anyone else looking at 5 at the back this week? I'm currently lining up with Cancelo, TAA, Rudiger, James and Livramento with Benrahma and Sarr on the bench.

Yes, but that sounds like my midfield and attack, barring Salah, for the last few weeks!

potentially. Have Trent, Dias, James, Livramento and White. Tempted to bench Dias for Gray (also have Sarr).

      It's team dependent, every week

I'd play your defenders over those two on the bench, yes

Right now I’m benching TAA. West Ham score but he is 1st bench

I wonder if the Spurs game was a false dawn for Man U

New defensive formation, more grit, etc... But faced a pedestrian team

The City game is the perfect next opponent: "Oh yeah, you've improved? Prove it."

It's not even about whether they'll win or not. It's the performance, especially when defending

of course it's a false dawn. United will always win games with that set of players. Solskjaer hasn't suddenly become a top level manager.

Utd can't/don't press, OGS went mad trying to go toe-to-toe with 'Pool.
Defending in numbers has been his (and Jose before him's) formula for big games before and worked against turgid Spuds, he'd be crackers not to wheel it out again on Saturday.

Pretty sure they will be all over the place vs Man City's pace, Varane cant hold that defense alone.

solskjaer has generally done well against city. but that's about players rather than him, players like Rashford and Pogba are built for counter attacks, which city are always vulnerable to. Think city will be fine against ronaldo and cavani though.

Save FT? or maybe Rudiger -> James?

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Chilwell Livramento
    Salah Raphina ESR
    Ronaldo Vardy

    Steele Gray Sissoko Locadia
