Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento keeps up fine FPL form

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 11 Scout Notes with analysis of Southampton v Aston Villa.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 ASTON VILLA

  • Goals: Adam Armstrong (£5.9m)
  • Assists: none
  • Bonus (projected): Adam Armstrong x3, Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) x2, Jan Bednarek (£4.4m) x2

ARMSTRONG NETS WINNER

Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento delivers again

Prior to Gameweek 11, Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) had failed to score since the opening day, having attempted 25 shots without finding the back of the net. However, an excellent first-time strike after just three minutes tonight got Southampton off to the perfect start, and ensured that the 24-year-old has now bagged attacking returns in back-to-back Gameweeks.

“No pressure for me, I know I can score goals, I have had chances and as a striker that is football. You cannot be too down on yourself.” – Adam Armstrong

After another two goal attempts against Aston Villa, Armstrong has now registered 29 shots this term, second only to Michail Antonio (£8.2m) amongst all forwards.

With Che Adams (£6.8m) and Adam Armstrong paired up front together again, budget forward Armando Broja (£5.0m) had to settle for a place on the bench, with a frustrating 10-minute cameo ensuring he ends the Gameweek with just one point.

After tonight’s win, Southampton have now taken 10 points from their last four matches. During that time, they have kept three clean sheets and conceded just two goals, ahead of an appealing away trip to Norwich City after the international break.

FULL-BACKS IMPRESS

Elsewhere, Southampton’s full-backs were both excellent on the night, and regularly found themselves in advanced positions.

That was enhanced after a switch to a three-at-the-back formation following the introduction of Lyanco (£4.5m), but it was encouraging all the same, and bodes well for their prospects moving forwards.

Tino Livramento (left) and Kyle Walker-Peters (right) touch heatmaps v Aston Villa in Gameweek 11

As for Livramento, the 21.7% owned defender was benched by 474,600 FPL managers in Gameweek 11, despite now returning either a goal, assist or clean sheet in seven of his last eight appearances.

Elsewhere, In his pre-match interview Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed that Nathan Redmond (£5.9m) was isolating, having tested positive for Covid.

“Nathan Redmond tested positive but is fine at home.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

ANOTHER DEFEAT FOR VILLA

After tonight’s loss, it’s now five defeats in a row for Dean Smith’s side, which has seen them drop to 15th in the table.

During that period, they have conceded 13 goals, which means only Newcastle United and Norwich City have a worse defensive record than Villa this season.

MOST PREMIER LEAGUE DEFEATS IN 2021:

Aston Villa18
Southampton18
Burnley17
Newcastle United17

As is stands, it does feel like this Villa defence is one to target in the coming weeks, especially given their ongoing issues defending set-pieces, which is something to keep in mind with Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Manchester City up next after the international break.

“They were the better team in the first half. We got them in at half-time and put it right. Bailey played down the middle and Buendia off the right and we looked a totally different team. We played with intensity in the second half. There was a response. You can’t question the character of the players. We have a few injuries. Some of our subs were academy graduates. I don’t like making excuses. We shouldn’t be losing five games on the spin. We can get some players back to fitness during the international break and come back stronger. You’d like a game in the next three or four days but we can’t.” – Dean Smith

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi (Diallo 76), S Armstrong (Lyanco 56), Adams, A Armstrong (Broja 81)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Tuanzebe, Mings, Targett, Nakamba (J Ramsey 63), McGinn, Bailey, Buendia (Archer 71), El Ghazi (Davis 79), Watkins

I prefer not owning Livra at all, than owning him and having mental problems every now and then bec of benching him

6 points on bench isn't an issue but a good cover imo..

I feel almost the same (FPL should be a game - not causing mental problems). Once the xmas congestion is upon us, having a good team/bench usually pays off.

At least his points are single figure and semi-predictable. I’m still scarred by random Soucek hauls!

I benched him but have my reasons. Thought Villa offered more of a threat attacking wise than Newcastle or Burnley and Cancelo's assist haul in the week (wrong) and City being able to pass the ball around a 3-5-2 pretty much as they wish means Rudiger and James got the nod with Duffy first in line...can't be cross or gutted. Well done those that played Livra

We were very lucky to hold out.

Villa looked like scoring but lack a clinical edge without Ings

2/3rds of the top 10k benched him. Most players have 3-4 premium defenders. Not exactly controversial.

Easy to say with hindsight but Villa really are poor at the moment and Ings was out injured. Plus saints defence stats very good.

I think it’s really low chances of city clean sheet and Newcastle new manager bounce

Everything the stats told you if you looked at them ahead of this match came true.

Vila one of the worst in the league for xG and Southampton had one of the best xGC.

Even I knew they and still bet against it 😆

We’ve been so poor defensively last few seasons that I think it’s taking time to realise we’re legitimately quite good.

Can’t score many, but I’m pretty comfortable with double saints defence atm

I’m jealous you got to the game. I’m sadly no longer in the south west.

I 100% expected us to concede, but watching on TV we looked pretty comfortable bar that McCarthy ‘clearance’

Hope you get Armstrong off the bench. I went rogue with a minute to go and started McCarthy, Livermento and AArmstrong

Surely the way you earn a spot in that situation is to score, and score the winner, and score it with an absolute screamer.

Can't see how AA doesn't start next game, myself. It's for Che and Broja to battle for the other spot (and Redmond too I guess) I reckon.

That’s fair enough. Probably was Broja until he got injured.
Ralph even publicly said it’s only a matter of time til AA scores.

Livramento looked like a line call for most, whichever way you went was more than likely justified, starters got a nice 6 pointer and those that put him first bench have good cover for a no show.

Have to say in hindsight my decision to use an FT to bring him in in GW3 has really worked out, most people said it didn't make sense using an FT for a player thar would often be on my bench but with injuries and rotation and Soton's good form and fixture run he's picked up an amazing run of points

Clearly the answer to this BeNcHiNg HeAdAcHe is to downgrade your 2nd Man City or Chelsea DEF to Manquillo or something. That way you just play Livra every week.

Thoughts on these moves if push comes to shove as I have the exact funds for:

Azpilicueta & Benrahma to Reguilon & Jota

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Reguilon (Livramento Duffy)
    Salah Son Jota Raphinha (Brownhill)
    Kane Toney Hwang

Thought I’d go back and check.

I’ve had Livramento since week 1 and he’s returned for me 4 times for 6, 9, 6, 5 points each.
    And benched he’s had 1, 2, 1, 6, 2, 4.

So I think I’ve done it just about as well as I could have. Especially since for the 4 returns he came off the bench all 4 times.

Sitting first bench now - expecting Azpi to not play and to get his points again. Would probably be the best bench player I’ve ever had (he is already really).

Tempted to solve my bench headache with a fairly nuclear option of:

    Raphinha + Antonio > Son + Davis

Would mean I lineup every week 4-4-2:

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell James
    Salah Son Foden Mbeumo
    Kane Toney
    (Foster Livra Brownhill Davis)

At least Livramento would be guaranteed to be 1st sub every week now!

I think the double up makes some sense for their mini run then hold Son, and jump Kane to CR7.

Somewhere along the line we've all ended up with strong benches and thats not entirely necessary

Tempted by similar, Antonio + Raph to Broja + Son. Would give me:

      Rasmdale
      TAA Cancelo James Livramento
      Salah Son Foden ESR
      Ronaldo Toney
      Foster Broja Duffy Brownhill

Nope but subjectively I would say you don’t see many triple rises over an ITB like there used to be say 5 years ago. Still some double rises to be had especially if the first rise is an early one.

Nice team but I would rather Son over Kane for now which give you more cash too. I would put that into Chilwell over White and any other upgrades you have cash for.
Also consider Guita or maybe Ramsdale over Sanchez.

Yeah I’m not tempted as I’d want Ronaldo back quick enough and don’t want to burn two transfers. I feel like I need to accommodate TAA and Cancelo but don’t know where to trim…

I would look at downgrade to Vardy and bring TAA in for Semedo. Then decide if you want 4 or 3 atb and get Cancelo in for Rudi or White.

Think it'd have to be Vardy, downgrade him to a 7.5 and you could do Semedo to one of them, or downgrade him to someone like Hwang and I think you could afford Semedo + White to TAA + Cancelo.

If you had one free transfer I would tell you to roll it so agree not much to do

      TAA? Jota ?
Not keen on Semedo or Sisssoko on your bench so you could get something better for that combined price

      1. SoulShakinTex
        • 2 Years

I would let go of CR7. But if part of a bigger plan: Downgrade Vardy to Jimi (or thereabouts) and upgrade Semedo to TAA? Leaves you what, 0,7 ITB? If then neither CR7 or Kane works, you can upgrade White to Cancelo (or loose Sissoko.)

I would get Vsrdy to Son with the 2 FT who you lose from the midfield is up to you but it probably means a very cheap or not playing third forward.
Your team has some rotation risks but not enough that the third bench spot should be required very often. Son is the player to have for the next few GWS and the only in transfer I am considering.

Same boat as me. Vardy and Sarr gets me Son and a Hwang or Broja or somesuch I'll only bench (maybe a blessing in disguise if it means I actually start Livra!)

I could get to Son and Toney by axing Saka or Raph along with Vardy, though. Or it would have to be Gilmour and Vardy for Son and something like Gelhardt or Archer in i 3-5-2.

I think comparing to the World Series of Poker is a good analogy. Obviously to win it all is insane luck, but you still need to be doing something right along the way. And those who consistently make the top 10k or even 100k are clearly not just lucky.

Really hope Kane shows some life against Everton.

Son is more likely to return than Kane based on form this season.

      YASSSSS!! 100 up, 0 down.

Really don’t get why people have to point this out at all!

No one cares, seriously. You want a cookie or something?

I would love a cookie if this is a genuine offer. It’s 2am and I’m kind of peckish.

Assume I should confirm my address / sort code / account number / etc?

It is a genuine offer, but I just don’t have any cookies. Sorry about that.

Ironically, today yours is the only reply on this post that says this. Nobody else has done this today.

        Agreed, though.

If you treat all comments like thought bubbles everything makes a lot more sense.

These aren't well thought out publications with any real purpose, they are just impulsive thoughts. Same goes for all social media and comment sections on the internet.

TV is a small game inside this game. I prefer having higher tv than lower, and who cares about 10 up zero down posts? What's the point in trying to be better person than those who value also tv and are happy to see peice rises? And they do have effect, not big, but important. When players you have become more expensive, they also become harder to get for those who don't own them. It's easy to say that all you need to do is find one cheaper player to handle low tv, but it is actually incorrect. The opponents with high tv may also find that exact same player and afford better squad. Yes, there are seasons when tv doesn't matter and seasons when expensive players are worth the money. We don't know yet about next spring and what this season is going to be like.

WC time!! Likely Kane > Ronaldo in GW16 and should coincide with the return of Firmino for Pool so can downgrade Jota then if need to find funds? Do we think it's ok to play 2 of Livramento / White / Lamptey if back? (or Duffy) each week? The alternative is to drop Foden to a Gallagher / ESR and upgrade Lamptey > Cancelo and White > Reguilon. Thoughts? Thanks :

    Sanchez
TAA / Chilwell / Livramento / Lamptey (or Duffy)
    Salah / Son / Foden / Jota
    Kane / Toney

    Steele, Brownhill, White, Davies

I love the Cancelo and Regullion in options. Cancelo was involved so much in the CL game looks on form So hails can’t be far away. Wing backs under Conte have amazing numbers of goals /assists and probably clean sheets too. Foden could be great too but with all of them (probably can’t afford anyway) there is just a bit too much rotation risk.
