Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento keeps up fine FPL form

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 11 Scout Notes with analysis of Southampton v Aston Villa.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 ASTON VILLA

  • Goals: Adam Armstrong (£5.9m)
  • Assists: none
  • Bonus (projected): Adam Armstrong x3, Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) x2, Jan Bednarek (£4.4m) x2

ARMSTRONG NETS WINNER

Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento delivers again

Prior to Gameweek 11, Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) had failed to score since the opening day, having attempted 25 shots without finding the back of the net. However, an excellent first-time strike after just three minutes tonight got Southampton off to the perfect start, and ensured that the 24-year-old has now bagged attacking returns in back-to-back Gameweeks.

“No pressure for me, I know I can score goals, I have had chances and as a striker that is football. You cannot be too down on yourself.” – Adam Armstrong

After another two goal attempts against Aston Villa, Armstrong has now registered 29 shots this term, second only to Michail Antonio (£8.2m) amongst all forwards.

With Che Adams (£6.8m) and Adam Armstrong paired up front together again, budget forward Armando Broja (£5.0m) had to settle for a place on the bench, with a frustrating 10-minute cameo ensuring he ends the Gameweek with just one point.

After tonight’s win, Southampton have now taken 10 points from their last four matches. During that time, they have kept three clean sheets and conceded just two goals, ahead of an appealing away trip to Norwich City after the international break.

FULL-BACKS IMPRESS

Elsewhere, Southampton’s full-backs were both excellent on the night, and regularly found themselves in advanced positions.

That was enhanced after a switch to a three-at-the-back formation following the introduction of Lyanco (£4.5m), but it was encouraging all the same, and bodes well for their prospects moving forwards.

Tino Livramento (left) and Kyle Walker-Peters (right) touch heatmaps v Aston Villa in Gameweek 11

As for Livramento, the 21.7% owned defender was benched by 474,600 FPL managers in Gameweek 11, despite now returning either a goal, assist or clean sheet in seven of his last eight appearances.

Elsewhere, In his pre-match interview Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed that Nathan Redmond (£5.9m) was isolating, having tested positive for Covid.

“Nathan Redmond tested positive but is fine at home.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

ANOTHER DEFEAT FOR VILLA

After tonight’s loss, it’s now five defeats in a row for Dean Smith’s side, which has seen them drop to 15th in the table.

During that period, they have conceded 13 goals, which means only Newcastle United and Norwich City have a worse defensive record than Villa this season.

MOST PREMIER LEAGUE DEFEATS IN 2021:

Aston Villa18
Southampton18
Burnley17
Newcastle United17

As is stands, it does feel like this Villa defence is one to target in the coming weeks, especially given their ongoing issues defending set-pieces, which is something to keep in mind with Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Manchester City up next after the international break.

“They were the better team in the first half. We got them in at half-time and put it right. Bailey played down the middle and Buendia off the right and we looked a totally different team. We played with intensity in the second half. There was a response. You can’t question the character of the players. We have a few injuries. Some of our subs were academy graduates. I don’t like making excuses. We shouldn’t be losing five games on the spin. We can get some players back to fitness during the international break and come back stronger. You’d like a game in the next three or four days but we can’t.” – Dean Smith

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi (Diallo 76), S Armstrong (Lyanco 56), Adams, A Armstrong (Broja 81)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Tuanzebe, Mings, Targett, Nakamba (J Ramsey 63), McGinn, Bailey, Buendia (Archer 71), El Ghazi (Davis 79), Watkins

Could a double up of Jimenez and Hwang be worth it for 13 and 14 fixtures. But I am also thinking am I just setting myself for transfers out and hits down the line as the fixtures turn bad real quick.

Wolves have never been a free-scoring side. The double up might bring you 8 points a week - not worth it.

The issue you mentioned is basically it. You're jumping on them for two weeks and then the fixtures turn abysmal so you'll need to spend two transfers you probably don't have getting rid while the congested fixture schedule throws up other worries. Not for me.

The way i see this is that if you want a wolves striker for longer term then a double up before those two can be good, As you then can keep hwang for their bad run and just bench him and play say Livra or mid. And Wolves were good on counter Vs the good teams in the start og season so playing hwang vs defense with high lines not the worst scenario.

Just watched the highlights. That’s a superb instinctive strike from Armstrong. Been following his progress for about 3 years cause he always had the potential but not in my team yet.
But those two Martinez saves from JWP and Adams are world class.

Surely Armstrong gonna keep his place now right? I was on the verge of ridding him for Toney but kept him due to other fires.

Started him this week ahead of Lord Livra, feels so jammy.

I wouldn’t go near Toney either at current rate. He’s 6.7m now and hasn’t shown any returns.

If I knew Broja was going to be starting going forward, I’d also move Armstrong to Broja too

I was going for Broja but now thinking Hwang too. If I do I will be double up Jimenez and Hwang some good fixtures but after that at least one needs to go.
Had some feedback earlier saying Wolves never haul and I kinda agree, but Hwang in isolation offers great value for the next few weeks.

I've definitely been tempted to move early but it just isn't worth it, a lot of these players will be playing 3 games before the next GW so a lot of scope for issues to crop up. I was looking at Kane and TAA in particular but luckily I'm not relying on exact money for the moves so I didn't feel the need to dive in so early.

Is Ronaldo + Raphinha + Mount > Vardy + Son + Gallagher for -4 right moves?

I know its too early but I need to keep an eye on price changes

I like the moves! Gallagher can be Mbeumo/ESR?

Already Have Mbeumo, ESR’s fixtures are not that great after Watford I think

Raphinha and Mount out I'd say is fine but keep Ronaldo at this stage, has an exceptional run starting from GW14 and a great fixture next week

Livra slowly becoming one of the first names in my XI. Even thinking of ditching one of the City defenders to use the money elsewhere. That's how much I'm starting to be assured of this guy.

Not sure he will deliver once this good fixture run is over.

Could always bench him if need be 😉

Yes - I've had him from the start and is a season keeper. Great for long term TV too.

Who played Livramento this week? And what was your thinking as AVL have scored in all but one of their games this season?

Didn't want to have a Sanchez+Duffy double up. Hence started Livra 😉

I bench boosted as couldn’t bear not getting his inevitable points

Because the other option was Semedo.

I played - it was between him and Dias. No idea whether it was the right decision but can see MU getting a goal and thought if Livramento didn't get a cs there was at least a chance of an assist with Villa's defence issues...

I played as Soton have been very solid in the last few games, think I read they're 5th on xGC list and that's after games v City, Chelsea and West Ham. Villa have the ability to score in most games so it could well have gone wrong but I thought a 1-0 here was likely with the poor run they're on, their confidence is drained from the losses, defensive changes and errors aren't helping so I said it was worth the go.

Do we really need Son or Kane? On WC and my team looks good without them.

      Son YES Kane NO.

Kane didn't do much v Arnhem and Son was the bigger threat playing alongside him upfront. Moura looks an interesting pick if he continues to play advanced just behind the front 2.

Not really essential but could be a good differential, can always switch to Man Utd players if it doesnt work.
