Five goals in six starts for Cornet as set-piece problems continue at Palace

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 12 Scout Notes with analysis of Burnley v Crystal Palace.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on all of the weekend’s games in more detail via the links below.

BURNLEY 3-3 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Ben Mee (£4.9m), Chris Wood (£6.7m), Maxwel Cornet (£6.1m) | Christian Benteke (£6.3m) x2, Marc Guehi (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.3m), James Tarkowski (£4.9m) x2 | Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) x2, Conor Gallagher (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Benteke x3, Andersen x2, Tarkowski x2

CORNET AND WOOD PARTNERSHIP THRIVING

After Saturday’s result at Turf Moor, Burnley have now avoided defeat in their past four games, a run which has included a 3-1 win over Brentford and draw at Chelsea.

Key to that improved form has been the partnership between Maxwel Cornet (£6.1m) and Chris Wood (£6.7m), with both players on the scoresheet again in Gameweek 12, as they were in their previous home fixture. As a result, the Ivorian has now scored five goals in just six starts, though it is worth noting that his +3.96 expected goals (xG) delta is higher than any other player in the division, while he has recorded that goalscoring tally from just 10 shots.

“We enjoy what he is doing, he is getting towards true Premier League fitness I think and he has played football during the international break and he looked alive, especially second half. In the first half he was sitting on the deep laying midfielder and he didn’t need to. We told him to come off that position and go and press which he did in the second half and he has brought energy but he brought quality as well and his finish was a fine strike.” – Sean Dyche on Maxwel Cornet

With Cornet and Wood paired together up front, the Clarets have now scored seven goals in their last three games, which bodes well for their attacking prospects ahead of a reasonably appealing run of fixtures:

Elsewhere, James Tarkowski (£4.9m) and Ashley Westwood (£5.3m) will both miss Burnley’s match against Tottenham Hotspur next week after picking up their fifth bookings of the season.

BENTEKE AT THE DOUBLE

A brace from Christian Benteke (£6.3m) means that he has now scored 11 Premier League goals in 2021, with all four of this season’s arriving in the last five Gameweeks. During that time, he has been benched once, though with Patrick Vieira praising his work rate off the ball, his chances of another start against Aston Villa on Saturday look promising.

“The way we are playing now, we are creating more chances. For me as a striker, it is a pleasure to be up front. The most important thing is to get points. We took one [at Burnley], and hopefully we will get three next weekend.

As the manager said, we are following a process. The last game we lost was against Liverpool, and since then we have been consistent. We can still do better, we just have to take it game by game.

As you can see, it’s going fantastically for the club in a short space of time. The way we are playing is nice to watch. We are creating more chances, and that is good for the team and the club.” – Christian Benteke

SET-PIECE ISSUES AT PALACE

Palace are now unbeaten in seven games, while only Liverpool and Chelsea have lost fewer matches this season, but there are issues at the back which Vieira will look to solve sooner rather than later.

Despite consecutive clean sheets against Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers prior to Gameweek 12, they conceded three at Burnley, with the absence of key midfielder James McArthur (£4.5m) a real blow, though we should point out that two goals came from set-pieces, which has been a problem area all season.

In fact, no team has conceded more goals from set-pieces in 2021/22, or more attempts than their 60, with Sean Dyche targeting that specific weakness at the weekend:

“We know so far they’ve got a poor record, well so far, from set pieces, so we thought we could capitalise as we know we’re strong from that. I think the quality of the ball in, Ben Mee’s header is fantastic, Maxwel’s is a brilliant strike, and Woody nicks one as well, so we’re pleased with that. We looked effective from it all game, there were chances in the second half, and obviously a brilliant finish from Maxwel, so pleased with that side of things.” – Sean Dyche

Elsewhere, Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) put in a lively display, consistently finding space between the lines, and provided his fifth assist of the season, while Cheikh Kouyate (£4.5m) filled in for the injured McArthur, with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) alongside him in midfield.

Burnley XI: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson, Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil, Cornet (Vydra 84), Wood (Rodriguez 79)

C Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Milivojevic (Edouard 87), Kouyate, Gallagher (Schlupp 81), Ayew (Olise 58), Zaha, Benteke

Its tempting, I like Benteke as an option & the move crossed my mind but I don't want to lose Antonio, won't be long and WH fixtures pick up again.

I realised I can get him back easily. I'm almost certainly losing Son by GW16, with Antonio coming back in GW18 but joined by Johnson

So I lost my fear of the 0.4 loss (he'll drop price once or twice before then anyway) and made the move

Benteke until GW18, then DCL from GW19 while keeping Gallagher. Jesus + Tomiyasu to Antonio + Johnson (VC) GW18 for me, probably

Always team dependent, of course. I'm a high stakes high TV gambler

But I really do think the loss on Antonio might just be 0.3 or even 0.2 between now and GW18, except if he explodes vs Burnley

Antonio is not actually that desirable until GW18 I think.

Maybe 16 for Burnley but it's 18 that you'll want him for. Plenty of time to bring him back if need be.

Moving on a Brentford asset / Antonio has some merit.

Even Gelhardt to a 4.4 to pocket 0.1, considering the rest of your subs are strong.
Rodrigo and Raphinha will be back as too will Bamford further down the line.

So I used my 2FT early for once. With a rank of 475k, do I need to bring in some differentials to make up ground in the coming weeks.
What would you recommend as the priorities for this lot?
Fixtures wise Raph to Gallagher/Cornet but not for a hit unless Raph doesn't recover this weekend. Anything else on the horizon?
I am concerned re Antonio form but I feel i'll just want him back for gw16

    Guiata (Steer)
    Trent Cancelo Chilwell White (Livra)
    Salah Foden ESR Raph (Gilmour)
    Kane Antonio (Dennis)

Does Antonio to Pukki/King and Gilmour to Cornet/Trossard/Bowen make any sense for a hit? Or Ant and Gilmour for Dennis and Bernardo? Or am I just getting desperate with my strikers? Have Vardy/Jimi/Ant and have been feeling for weeks that too much is tied up for too few returns. 1 FT, 0,1 ITB.

I don't think the changes you are suggesting will give you a net points increase....the midfield upgrades from Gilmour aren't going to be consistently regular scorers. What options do you have if you move the saved money from your Antonio downgrade to defence? The attacking wingbacks are providing great returns at the moment and you may get better value from them?

Thanks! Have TAA, Cancelo, James, Chilwell and Livra in defence already. Not sure say Livra to Reg would make a great difference either? Mid is Salah/Gallagher/Raph/Saka/Gilmour, and giving Saka one last week. Any ideas appreciated.

Strikers are Vardy/Jimi/Ant. Keepers are Sanchez/Steele. Just don’t think I have struck the right balance between mids and fwds.

Keep Gilmour. Vardy and Jim should be good for a short while. I'd roll FT and play 4-4-2 with Antonio, Gilmour and Livra on the bench

Your first XI is fine for this GW. Reassess with 2 FTs for GW14, probably with Saka on the chopping block if he keeps doing what he's done in FPL since he got into the first team, even against Newcastle. None of your moves sounds worthy of a hit

It looks as though you'll likely be playing 442 / 433 most weeks with your current lineup, so I reckon you should just bench Antonio this week and play

              TAA / Cancelo / James / Chilwell
              Salah / Gallagher / Raph / Saka
              Vardy / Jimi.

No need to take a hit.

Tough, Soton have been better defensively but Everton are awful. West Ham will be tough for City but should be goals in it but City often put a few past Villa. I'd be tempted to say Silva but that might be because I don't always trust Jota to return

      1. Gabbiadini
        • 6 Years

Yes, I think it is close also but should both be fit, B Silva possibly more of a rotation risk over the next 2 despite starting every game bar one so far?

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

I guess he should be more of a rotation risk, but Pep's actually been more settled of late with selection, Bernardo seems to be in this vein of form where he's very hard to drop, playing in a role which is very different to that of a few years ago but he's arguably more important now. At this stage I'm tempted to have a triple up of Cancelo, Foden and then Bernardo in a few weeks. Could become a huge pain with rotation but honestly these players should be able for a lot of games, City play in Europe regularly and are regulars in the international breaks too.

      2. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

Yeah... Bernardo has suddenly developed a goal hunger out of the blue, and he's a clinical brilliant mind. Reminds me of when David was told by Pep to pad his stats and he started doing that. The same thing Pep did with Gundo recently, but I think that's been reeled back a bit

        Love to see it

Jota showed exactly why I don't have him in that match, even though he scored after making that gift more difficult for himself

I think Jota will get more chances. Points are probably 60:40 imo, favouring Jota due to fixtures

        1. Gabbiadini
          • 6 Years

Yeh, the main reason for posing this question is because I may likely look to trade Jimenez gw15 with hopefully 2 FTs.
The one I don't get this week, I could very likely get in 2 weeks time.

That's much closer to the time to sell Jota, especially since he's here due to an injury. I'd take advantage now

Bilva is more of a lowly owned (and will stay that way due to Foden Jota Gallagher Raphinha ESR Bowen) rotation risk punt, so he can wait a bit. You might even change your mind 🙂

Usual DZ update as I try to work at 1:30 am

    380k OR. 2.5m ITB
    Guaita
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell James
    Salah Son Foden Gallagher
    Jesus Benteke
    McCarthy Hwang Brownhill Livramento

Antonio's gone, to be back in GW18. Now rotating keepers, which I've avoided for a long time, but there's nowhere else to use the funds for now. Matthews (WC3 fail pick over Foster, whose price I thought would drop) to Guaita allows Benteke to be my 3rd Palace player anyway

    Plan Update:
Roll GW14 FT. Livra to Tomiyasu in GW15. Son + Hwang (finally getting rid of both) to CR7 + Gilmour in GW16; 4-3-3 locked in
Then the delicate dance of Jesus + Tomi to Antonio + Johnson/fodder in GW18, followed by Benteke to DCL in GW19
Risky stuff, this plan. Could easily backfire or adapt as things change in this rapidly evolving season

Back to IT work until I sleep off on it again 🙂

There's no way right... I just really can't see Chelsea conceding to this car crash of a United team. King and Mbeumo both could get something in their respective fixtures.

I advised benching Vardy vs Chelsea

Man U is in a worse state, especially since Carrick was part of Ole's system already. I'd have been more hopeful of a bounce if the new manager came immediately... But they're searching for a new *interim* manager, FFS

I'd advise benching Ronaldo vs Chelsea. Even if he explodes, I'm unlikely to feel regrets. It would mean the players clearly sacked Ole, though. Monitor their UCL performance?

You can't bench King - Watford are buzzing as is King.
Plus Ronaldo will be angry he plays well when he is angry.
If give that same choice next year - it would still be Mbeumo because he still would be missing chances.

I don't think you can really claim that he's the greatest of all time. It's debatable whether he's even the best player to have "Ronaldo" in his name.

A brilliant player at his peak, for sure, but Messi, R9 (the original Ronaldo), Maradona, Cruyff, Pele were all wonderful players as well. How can you define the greatest?

Having said that, I agree that I'd play him if he was in my team. 🙂

Out of those it has to be Mbeumo can see Everton doing a job on them. Plus Mbeumo would have more hope of scoring if he closed his eyes. Just a real poor finisher. The rest could nick a goal against anyone.
That is one mistake I regret getting on the Brentford train gw10 just before Norwich for the easy run of fixtures. Toney and Mbeumo.
Brentford are a way overhyped fpl team and their strength is more a collective thing than individual players - so not really great from an fpl point of view in my opinion.

I will be benching both Toney and Mbeumo for the Everton game. And selling Mbeumo the following gameweek. They will be easy enough for a tactician like Rafa to deal with fairly one dimensional side - even with Everton's injuries IMO.

Good chance Benteke rises tonight, even if he doesn't reach 100%

Except if the price change prediction algorithms have been tweaked to account for it, players who've dropped from their original prices (Benteke was 6.5) rise faster towards it, then rise normally from that point on

Net transfers around -220 and now his 5th drop
DCL has survived at for 6 weeks even though net transfers -2000 this week. Makes no sense. How long can a player be protected for?

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

It's the net percentage change in ownership, not just net change. DCL has far more owners, so needs far more sales to have an effect. He was losing 100k+ owners as he dropped from 8.2 to 8.0 soon after his injury, but has been losing in the 10k range of numbers since

He only just got to around 150k total loss since then, and that's why he's on the brink of another price drop. 450 sales left 😀

And yes, prices fall more slowly for injured players... But he's not locked or protected. Just many, MANY dead teams. 200k+

    1) Raphinha + Obamadeli —> ESR + James (can’t afford Gallagher)

Slightly biased as I own ESR. Cornet is doing well and playing OOP. Both have the fixtures maybe Burnley are better but I’d trust Arsenal attack more and also ESR has higher ownership if that comes into your FPL play

Anyone else tempted by Jesus? Especially since he just sat as has played in all but 2 matches. Should get a nice run now with city fixtures. Feel would rather gamble on Jesus in with City who will always be somewhere up front and City looking more positive than most for goals. He is fairly steady to play even with Pep roulette.

RIP my Green Bay packers after losing another player to a season ending injury.

While reading the injury report I found this line interesting "starting left tackle and all pro guard, Elton Jenkins out for season"

You see for those of you who don't understand sport, elgton Jenkins is a guard who played left tackle for most of the season out of necessity due to the other left tackle also being out for more than a year on an ACL. This means that even though his natural position is guard in effect the team has lost a left tackle because that is where he was playing when injured.

Now, I see ole saying finishing above liverpool, one of the best teams in Europe last season, as a reason to be proud of his tenure.

I get told by people on here that I lie about our injury crisis when I say we had 8 cbs injured last season. Well let me use the above terminology to help the united fans understand just how well ole did to finish ahead of us last season

Virg: CB out for season in Oct
Gomes: CB out for season in Nov
Matip: CB out for season in Nov
Fabinho: starting CB when injured and out for months from Dec
Henderson: starting CB when injured and out for months from Dec
Davies: CB injured in first training session when bought as cover. Injury lingered for weeks.
Kabak/phillips/williams: there were periods where at least one and sometimes 2 of these were carrying injury and missed games in Jan.

Well done Ole on beating this team who were bottom of the form charts in the league in January having lost 6 home games in a row. Well done on all of you who say this was not an injury crisis. Klopp was crap apparently. Team was crap apparently. Miracle return to form this season that cannot be explained.

I hope that at least somewhat defends the senseless attacks on my 8 injured cbs "theory".
