What Klopp said about Jota’s injury – and is Mane being unfairly overlooked in FPL?

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 12 Scout Notes with analysis of Liverpool v Arsenal.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on Manchester City v Everton and Tottenham Hotspur v Leeds United in more detail below.

Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal

  • Goals: Sadio Mane (£11.9m), Diogo Jota (£7.5m), Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Takumi Minamino (£5.1m)
  • Assists: Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) x2, Mane
  • Bonus: Alexander-Arnold x3, Mane x2, Alisson (£6.0m) x1

JOTA INJURY NEWS

Diogo Jota (£7.5m) found the net in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Arsenal but took a blow to his knee in a second-half collision with Aaron Ramsdale (£4.8m), carrying on playing for 15 minutes before being replaced and heading straight down the tunnel at Anfield.

“Diogo went off and he got a proper knock on his knee – they went knee to knee, I think. Now we have to see how quickly that develops in the right direction and hopefully, it is nothing serious, that would be very important.” – Jurgen Klopp

We should get an update from Klopp on the player’s fitness on Tuesday, ahead of the midweek UEFA Champions League tie against Porto.

There will be plenty else on the fitness front for the Liverpool boss to discuss in his pre-match presser: Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) failed to recover from a hamstring injury for the thrashing of the Gunners, allowing budget defender Kostas Tsimikas (£3.9m) a start, while Divock Origi (£4.9m) missed out through illness.

Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) is expected to remain sidelined for a little while but Naby Keita (£5.0m) and James Milner (£4.9m) had previously been earmarked for a return this week, something that Klopp may have been hinting at in his post-match conference call.

“Some players have a little chance to come back for Wednesday, I think – that would be great. After that, step by step hopefully they can come back and then we have more players available, which is absolutely helpful when you play every three days.” – Jurgen Klopp

MORE OF MINAMINO?

Firmino’s injury is, of course, a big reason why Jota’s FPL appeal has increased heading into the winter calendar, given that the two have typically shared game-time in the centre-forward role of Klopp’s attacking trident.

But it’s still worth remembering that the Liverpool boss has other options he can turn to besides Jota as the Reds head into a packed schedule of nine league matches, two Champions League fixtures and one EFL Cup tie in the space of 40 days.

Origi and Takumi Minamino (£5.1m) found the net in Gameweeks 11 and 12 respectively, with the Japan international emerging from the bench against Arsenal to score within seconds of replacing Jota.

“You can’t imagine how happy I am with Taki, he is in an incredible moment and he was actually our solution for pretty much four positions to change, I think, because that’s how the squad looked. It was like he could have played first five positions – he could have played both eight positions and then all three up front. He is in a really good moment, you see that, he played for Japan in the international games and now he is here and very important for us. Everybody was so happy for him that he scored the goal. The way he played today reflects really good how he trains in the moment. He will have games, there is no doubt about that.” – Jurgen Klopp

It may be that starts for Origi and Minamino occur in the two ‘dead rubber’ Champions League ties over the next few weeks and in that EFL Cup quarter-final shortly before Christmas but Klopp does have previous for resting even his big guns in the league in December, with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Sadio Mane (£11.9m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) and Robertson all occasionally warming the bench during recent festive fixture pile-ups.

The budget pair will, of course, come even more into the thinking when Salah and Mane leave for Cameroon in just over a month’s time.

MANE OVERLOOKED

There’s little left to say on the superlative Salah, whose goal on Saturday means that he has only blanked once in his 12 appearances this season and has already registered over two-thirds of the attacking returns that he managed in the whole of 2020/21.

There haven’t been nearly so many column inches devoted to Mane, however, despite the Senegal international sitting second (only to his runaway teammate) among FPL midfielders for points.

Mane’s goal against Mikel Arteta’s side means that he has delivered a goal and/or an assist in every home league fixture this season and yet his ownership sits at just 4.3% overall and 0.4% in the top 10k.

While no-one would advocate Mane replacing Salah in our sides, he has still been overlooked for that second problem premium position in most Fantasy squads.

Bettering Harry Kane (£12.2m), Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m), Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) and Son Heung-min (£10.4m) for overall points and points per match, the Senegalese winger also can’t be beaten by any of tat group for goals scored.

While he has perhaps been unfairly disregarded in the season to date, the ship may have sailed for now.

A Firmino-free Jota offers a saving of over £4.0m to the Liverpool attacking double-up, while Mane – along with Salah – will depart for the Africa Cup of Nations potentially as early as Gameweek 20 and could miss up to five league fixtures.

And owning one of Kane, Lukaku, Ronaldo or Vardy does mean that the premium forwards, as misfiring as they currently are, can be easily interchanged upon dips in form or fixture swings (eg Kane to Ronaldo in Gameweek 16).

The fixtures for Mane do remain positive, at least, until a departure for Africa towards New Year:

What Klopp said about Jota's injury - and is Mane being unfairly overlooked?

TAA MORE THREATENING THAN EVER

Alexander-Arnold’s phenomenal start to the season continued with a fifth double-digit haul in 10 appearances.

The right-back has now delivered just under half of the points he managed in the whole of 2020/21 (79 v 160) and is 27 points ahead of where he was in his best-ever campaign, 2019/20.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD’S RECORD AFTER GAMEWEEK 12 IN PREVIOUS SEASONS
SeasonGoalsAssistsClean SheetsPointsPoints per match
2018/19026515.1
2019/20142524.3
2020/21011242.4
2021/22166797.9

The England international almost scored himself from open play on Saturday, later banking two assists, and his rate of goal attempts (2.0) and penalty box touches (2.5) per match is better than in any of his previous seasons. Simply put, this might be the most threatening incarnation of Alexander-Arnold we’ve even seen – something the player himself alluded to after the game:

“I’m feeling good out there, playing with freedom. I’m finding myself in positions that I haven’t previously found myself in and I’m being able to hurt the opposition.” – Trent Alexander-Arnold

ARSENAL OUTCLASSED

Owners of Arsenal players wouldn’t have been expecting too much from the trip to Anfield and, despite a spirited first-half display, the Gunners were shown up to be what they currently are: an improving side but ultimately one that is a class below Klopp’s troops.

“We competed really well in the first half – they had their moments, we had our moments. We were really compact and used the ball in the right way to create some situations. We had a goal disallowed and then we conceded a goal from a set play. In the second half, when we had to build some momentum and start to grow [into] the match, we threw it away in the first 15 to 20 minutes.

“They were better than us for 90 minutes and that’s the level. They’ve been together for six years and today you could see the difference in the moment that we lost control of the game.

“At the moment, they are better than us.” – Mikel Arteta

A much more favourable test awaits the north Londoners in Gameweek 13, with a Newcastle side who have yet to keep a clean sheet in 2021/22 up next. No club has conceded more Premier League goals or ‘big chances’ than the Magpies, whose defensive deficiencies were again in evidence against Brentford despite the change in manager.

The likes of Emile Smith Rowe (£5.9m), Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m), who wasted the visitors’ only real clear opening of the game, will get a great chance to get back to scoring ways, then, although the prospects of Nuno Tavares (£4.3m) keeping his place at left-back may have taken a hit after a poor display on Merseyside.

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Thiago (Morton 84‘), Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Henderson 77’); Salah, Jota (Minamino 76‘), Mane.

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale; Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tavares; Saka, Partey (Elneny 84‘), Lokonga (Maitland-Niles 54’), Smith Rowe; Lacazette (Odegard 66‘), Aubameyang.

If Chilwell and James play against Juve the Watford game looks prime for a rest sandwiched by United and West Ham.

The problem with that is if 2/5 of your back line miss out the other 3 have to play or you won’t get 11 out. I.e. if cancello is also you’ll only have 2 defenders regardless.

That was long back. Chilwell was not starting at that time and James just came back from ankle injury. The state of play is completely different now.

I dont agree. They should have all their attackers fit to be over reliant on both Chilwell and James against Watford. If one isnt rested vs Watford, it might be away to Zenit on 8th December or at home to Leeds, three days later.

Without their creativity their strikers wont be able to do anything. Lukaku was struggling to score goals when Alonso & Azpi were starting.

I think the league is too tight for Tuchel to start mass rotating. Even Pep is not rotating his important players that much this season.

Its Watford lol. Beating a woeful Utd doesnt make Watford a good team. . Tuchel has to balance the squad and avoiding risk of injury. He could even play CHO again at rwb and Alonso at lwb

Then they will play 3 games in a week which means there wont be as much rotation as you expect.
Like I said we'll see how many games these wingbacks missed in the PL after GW21. Personally dont think it will more than 1 or 2.

All im saying is there's a chance they are both rested vs Watford because Watford is one of their easier, if not easiest game over the next 2 months. I didnt say it will definitely happen. They will each be rested at least once if not twice before xmas schedule is over. The best time lto rest players looks to be Watford, Zenit, Leeds and the EFL cup game.

Also its not like James & Chilwell cant play 3 games in a week they both are young and fit. They just cant do that every week. Expect them to miss 1 game after they start 3-4 games consecutively.

Yup true again with no Chilwell or James available post Euros but they have now raised their game to a level that I doubt Alonso and Azpi could match. But we are running out of games to rest James or Chiwel until the FA Cup in January so maybe we rest one vs Watford and the other (or both) vs Brentford in the League Cup

If the Juve game is a draw then the Zenit game becomes a dead rubber as we will have qualified but won’t realistically get too spot so that’s another opportunity.

I was going to post on this - worth having BOTH James and Chilwell or have we missed the boat.

I just got both (Azpili > James). The highlights showed how attacking they both remain so the upside remains huge. There will be the odd benching or 1pt cameo but overall I think they are worth the investment right now.

Both vs Utd is very appealing

I am a happy new owner! This is also more justified with less reliance (currently) on the Premiums (bar Salah) so there is more money to splash on the defence. The value per £1 million is huge with all the big attacking full backs.

Duffy, Foden, Gray > James, Jota, Bissouma

Wing backs are where the value is at. + rudiger.

I’ve got 4 and am tempted by the one of the spurs boys for number 5.

Your back line is fine. You might change keeper/livra but keep the other 4.

Mids Raphinia, foden, havertz could go.

Up top Antonio/Toney could go too (though Antonio is not an issue)

The hold option would be for when West Ham/United swings come in particularly if United get a decent manager in.

I’m short team looks ok, couple of mid transfers each week might improve and doesn’t look desperate for WC by any stretch.

Wait on havertz/raph news and replace 1 of them.

Either Cancelo or Jota worth a -4? I'd have to downgrade Wood to do it... Don't fancy taking Foden out just yet. Thoughts very much appreciated!

Maybe, the way I see it is you get rid of a defender who could potentially keep a clean sheet and get minimum of 6 points (such ad Dier or Chris above) for Caneclo -4, Cancelo needs to get a least 10 points to make it worthwhile. Again, just my opinion, I'd make a free transfer this week to free up funds for Cancelo next GW but not a hit.

                          good team.
i had a look about when to use wc too.
it needs to be used before gw20.
there is only 48 hours between gw19 and 20 deadlines.
so maybe use it between gw18 and 19 where u get 8 days.

G2G imo, here is my team for comparison:

                            Ramsdale / Foster

They are. But having solid defense helps and I always planned to keep Saka vs Newcastle. Vardy can sometimes score ten in a row just to blank next ten. Jesus is rotation risk as seen and has been blanking a lot. Raphinha being ill, sour fixtures, Leeds being poor and no Bamford are problems. I am not certain about Mbeumo on your bench also.

That weakens your bench during festive period, but those mids will get probably 2 pts just like more expensive assets, so perhaps not too much harm there.

Sold Antonio for Dennis to get funds in order to get perhaps CR7 later. Saka to Bowen is also one possibility. Yet I am also prepared to get Antonio back if necessary. But I have a gut feeling that he or the team may become little fatigued and decided to take a risk and sell him.

I'm also considering CR7 and possibly Antionio along with some WH mid since GW16/17, could be Son Toney Vardy to Bowen Antonio CR7

Something like that possibly. If Son starts scoring, it may become difficult though. Things change so fast in fpl, and there are a lot new managers now, so new players may emerge.

Need to get money for Duffy to James (also have TAA, Chilwell, Lamptey, Livramento) What is the better combination to have for the foreseeable for a -4?

I don't want any non-playing subs for the festive fixtures / rotation.

A - Raphinha, Rice and Dennis (Mbuemo to Rice / Toney to Dennis)
B - Mbuemo, Rice and King (Raphinha to Rice / Toney to King)
C - Other combo of two cheap mids and one cheap forward for £16.9m

The fact you have Chilwell I wouldn't be rushing to double up on Chelsea defense, especially with both prone to rotation over hectic December.

Disagree, James is absolutely worth getting in. Attacking returns in every single game he’s played >60 mins and I’d say Chelsea’s best current player on form. Tuchel will play him most games for the title race, barring one or maybe two rests.

James is worth getting in, but is he worth getting in for a hit vs MU with new manager?

Depends on the team. If you don’t have the transfers to get him in without a hit, I’d say better to do it now than later. Chelsea are capable of keeping clean sheets against anyone and Utd have the worst defence on form in the league. Ripe for more returns.

Is Pep insisting Foden starts too far out left on the touchline, for the good of the team, but sacrificing his personal attacking returns?

If so, do you hold or transfer him?

This is my worry, if he keeps hugging the touchline he's not worth the price or midfield spot, he's lethal through the middle. Thing is he has a run of games now against teams where I think City could tear a few teams apart and he could do very well. I'll see how the West Ham game goes, if it looks like he's wide again I may move to Bernardo. Guess really it's all about Grealish being back or not.

I’m gonna give Foden another game or two I think, subject to European games too. If he plays midweek and Jota is declared fit I may make the move.

                              Great article.

Interesting Klopp comments on Minamino, he seems to have been impressed and plans to play him more. "He will have games, there is no doubt about that."

Also hints at rotation when he mentions playing every three days.

Was looking to buy Jota this week if he's fit, but might need to give it a bit more thought. I still think he's worth it, but food for thought...

Well... I am not worried for Jota's game time if he is fit. Klopp probably had not forgotten AFCON and when both Salah and Mane are out, Minamino is definitely needed.

Strange. People fear that flag? He was close to 90% so I made a mistake and took a risk transferring him in early.

Trent better than Rudi. If you cant get trent in any other way, then do it
