FPL Gameweek 13 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 13 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles for Saturday and Sunday will take the place of the usual Scout Notes this week.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Phil Foden (£8.2m) and Jack Grealish (£7.6m) both missed Manchester City’s 2-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday with unspecified minor issues, along with Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) who continues to isolate following a positive Covid-19 test.

For West Ham, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) was replaced just after the hour mark, with David Moyes later saying:

“He is okay, his back is stiff after going into the goalpost. He was in spasm really and couldn’t move his leg well at that point.”

Elsewhere, Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m) surprisingly dropped to the bench, but it was a tactical move, with Arthur Masuaku (£4.4m) preferred for the reasons outlined by Moyes below:

“I think it’s the amount of crosses Manchester City put in your box from both sides. I think it’s how you defend them. They overload both sides when they’re crossing and they are very good at it. They’re probably number one in the Premier League for that. So that was the thought behind Arthur (Masuaku) and also, it gave us a little bit of left-sided balance which I thought I needed today as well.”

Meanwhile, Ben Foster (£4.1m) was absent from Watford’s matchday squad with a groin injury, along with Ismaila Sarr (£5.9m) and Nicolas Nkoulou (£4.5m), while Emmanuel Dennis (£5.3m) and Adam Masina (£4.3m) will both be assessed having picked up knocks.

“I’m not sure how long Ben (Foster) will be out for, but Bachmann made some good saves and I am comfortable with him in goal. With Dennis and Masina, I’m not sure at the moment. Tomorrow we’ll check everybody because Dennis came out and Masina didn’t finish well.

As for Everton, they welcomed back Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.6m) to their starting XI and bench respectively, with the former’s performance discussed by Rafa Benitez after the game.

“When a player is out for a while you expect he will give everything and he did it. In the first half he was a little out of position but in the second half he was better.”

On the suspension front, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up his fifth booking of the season and will now miss City’s midweek clash at Aston Villa, with either John Stones (£5.3m) or Nathan Ake (£4.8m) expected to step in, while Joao Cancelo (£6.6m) moved onto four cautions, and is now just one yellow card away from a ban.

“There is no reason why. I would like Nathan to play more than he is playing but Aymer (Laporte) is playing really well. For this specific game, John was not quite well the last two days. He was a little bit sick, with a fever after the game with PSG. That’s why we played Aymer. He is suspended for the game against Aston Villa, so [it’s] a new chance for the other guys.” – Pep Guardiola at his post-match press conference, when asked why he’d rotated his centre-backs so often this season

Elsewhere, Sergi Canos (£5.5m) andBruno Fernandes (£11.6m) are both now on four yellow cards, but Everton will welcome back Richarlison (£7.4m) for Wednesday’s Merseyside derby, having served his one-match suspension.

GAMEWEEK 13 TAKEAWAYS

FORWARDS HIT BACK

After Saturday’s games, no Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward had returned either a goal or assist, as the shouts for going even ‘bigger at the back’ grew louder. That may still be the case, but with Ivan Toney (£6.7m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) both on the scoresheet today, plus Watford duo Josh King (£5.6m) and Emmanuel Dennis, it has at least given us something to think about.

The latter two are perhaps the most interesting, not only due to their form, but also their budget price tags. Notably, King took on penalties in the absence of Ismaila Sarr (£5.9m) today, converting his first-half spot-kick after Dennis was fouled, and may well remain on them now given the Senegalese wingers back-to-back misses in Gameweek 12.

As for Dennis, following today’s goal and assist, he has now produced 11 attacking returns in just 12 Premier League appearances. Remarkably, only Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has more with 20.

LEICESTER ASSETS BACK ON THE FPL RADAR?

Despite failing to score in each of his last four Premier League appearances, Jamie Vardy provided two goals on Sunday as Leicester City beat Watford 4-2 in an entertaining clash at the King Power Stadium. Encouragingly, the veteran forward produced five shots in the box, more than he had managed across his previous four matches combined, while his 12-point haul rewarded the owners who kept faith despite his blanks. The Foxes’ next three fixtures suggest further returns could be on the way, too.

Leicester’s win was only their fifth from 13 Premier League matches, but they did look more comfortable – at least in an attacking sense – in today’s 4-2-3-1, which saw Vardy flanked by Ademola Lookman (£6.0m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.5m). However, it was the performance of James Maddison (£6.6m) which stood out most, as he thrived as a no. 10 and looked back to his best after a terrible start to the campaign. The playmaker was at the heart of everything his team did well, and ended the day on 16 FPL points, via a goal, two assists and three bonus points.

“It was great, you can see Maddison’s quality, he was a real inspiration for us. We always have a point to prove every single day. For him it was looking at his game, he knows this is a game and a level where you are always looking to prove yourself. You can never be calm with that, you always have to be intense. You are seeing the work, not just with him but the confidence returning to the team. It’s not about the one player, it’s about the team but he was excellent today.” – Brendan Rodgers

RONALDO BENCHED AS CARRICK OPTS FOR CONSERVATIVE APPROACH

Despite missing three key defenders – Raphael Varane (£5.5m), Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Luke Shaw (5.1m) – United looked better defensively in Gameweek 13, as a more conservative approach earned them a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Even though they failed to record a single shot on target during the first-half, they scored against the run of play via Jadon Sancho (£8.9m), who netted his first Premier League goal since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Now, if he can nail down a spot in the starting XI, he could perhaps emerge as an option for our midfields, especially given United’s improving schedule, though it is worth noting caretaker manager Michael Carrick said after the game that Ralf Rangnick, who is expected to be announced as the Red Devils’ interim boss, was not involved in his team selection or tactics against Chelsea.

As for Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m), the move to bench him certainly caused plenty of discussion prior to kick-off, which Carrick touched on in his pre-match interview:

“A few tweaks and changes from the other night, to change things up a bit. Cristiano is probably our standout name, but it’s just a gameplan, ideas. I had a good chat with Cristiano actually, he was great, and we’ve decided to go like that today. Really looking forward to the game.

It’s a decision just to pick a team, to be honest. I don’t think it needs more drama than that.

Everyone is fine, all the boys who have come out of the team have been terrific around the place, Cristiano included, fantastic with the boys, supporting them 100 per cent and ready to come on if and when needed.

We’re happy with the team we’ve picked, for sure. We’ve come here to try and win the game, like we do every single game.”

BURNLEY V TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR POSTPONED

Sunday’s Premier League game between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor was called off shortly after the line-ups were announced due to heavy snow. Attempts to clear the pitch were unsuccessful as the undersoil heating failed to cope and snow fell as quickly as it was being cleared.

No details have yet been given regarding the rescheduling of the game, though initial reports have suggested that it is unlikely to be played this year, with Spurs already facing a packed December schedule.

“We were ready for the game and I’m sure they were as well. A lot of people have worked very hard here over the last couple of hours but the pitch just continues to recover every time they clear it. Our goalkeepers have just gone out to warm up and the ball’s collecting snow.

The referee explained the safety angle as well, so I think they’ve just made as early a decision as possible. The ref said we’d have to keep stopping to clear the lines. And of course, there is the safety angle, so I think it’s a joint decision from everyone concerned.

I made it clear – if it could be played, we wanted it played, as did their manager [Antonio Conte]. A joint decision was made eventually and I can’t see how it could go ahead with the way the pitch is.” – Sean Dyche

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 13

Ilkay Gundogan’s (£7.2m) 1.35 xGI total was more than any other player on Sunday, though Josh King was a close second, having benefitted from a first-half penalty, as did Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Ademola Lookman also features thanks to his close-range goal, which carried an xG value of 0.77.

James Maddison’s five created chances was only bettered by one other player in Gameweek 13, while Gundogan, Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m), Tom Cleverley (£4.8m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) also posted encouraging totals.

However, none of Sunday’s names rank in the top five xA performers, which suggests the quality of chances they provided for their team-mates wasn’t quite as good as others this weekend.

He is the most obvious alternative to Foden. Not sure he's a must. Not many options.

I love that you are on the Jota train now lol. Be advised, the service on this train can really suck sometimes. It's very intermittent.

I know, I had him for 3 weeks early doors. 3 blanks and I got shot. But I feel the environment is different now. We'll see.

If I bring him in this week, even with a hit, it'll have to be at the expense of Raph. but if I do it next GW, I can do it for Mbeumo. And as bad as Everton are, it's still a derby game, so could be tough as well. hence the delay from me.

I did get him for Raph. I've had Raph all season, but I was watching Leeds for signs of improvement, and I'm just not seeing it. Raph has a couple of okay fixtures next, then a brick wall. I felt I could justify losing him for an in-form Jota now.

yeah, now that you've said it, I might do that move this week as well. not feeling Leeds much right now, despite the talent that is Raph. might downgrade Mbeumo to bring in Cancelo for Laporte next GW.

        Good morning DZ.

A little confused as to what to do.

Foden to Jota seems to be the obvious move. But City's fixtures are terrific.

        Maybe Foden to Gundogan?

        Ramsdale
        TAA Cancelo James Alonso
        Salah Son Foden ESR
        Jimenez Toney

It would be so nice if we ever got news whether Foden plays or not, but that's the curse of owning City assets. I've just got Jota in, but not at the expense of Foden.
I personally have insufficient faith in Spurs at the moment, but that's just me.

Exactly this, can't get my head around the blind faith some managers have that they will suddenly come good. Surely you wait till they actually hit form before punting them in? (Esp at that price point where you will be locked out of Jota, Foden)

I think it's a massive fallacy where players feel they need to predict the great run of form before it happens. In reality I think you need to recognise and just get on early once it's started. You will still be ahead of the curve this way, and without the same risk/variance.

I think what CP means is that it isn't wise to predict a run of form for a team that has shown absolutely no signs it's starting. Take the risk in missing out on the first game when the tide turns.

Eh, fixtures tend to bring form and Spurs had/have the best of them with the addition of one of the best managers in the world. It was a perfectly fine punt to gamble on world class attackers and hope they come good. I don't have them but they may well have done so today against a depleted Burnley.

Yes, you can play fixtures as a way of predicting form, to a point. Works when it's a good team. Doesn't work, or way too risky, if it's Spurs.

Worked with Spurs last season, I don't think they're some sort of exception to the rule. Jimenez was out of form until the fixtures turned and he started returning every week. Similarly, Antonio was in form until the fixtures worsened and West Ham started struggling against better defenses.

Nah, it's subtle but I really don't think it is. Just see the results early and be setup well enough to get on quick. Better than wondering when Kane is due.

                That's a fair point.
But it's precisely the high price point of Son and Kane that forces us to plan early because it may require some surgery to get them in quickly.

            Cheers Andy.

The thing that worries me about not owning Jota is that he played over 70 mins. this GW. Which is more than what I expect him to get. Getting subbed early was the main reason I avoided Jota.

I feel during such fixture congestion it's best to have fundamentally good players who are nailed.
I am happy with my team in that regard.
Foden is the only concern. But if fit, I think he can deliver from the bench as well given the fixtures.

Jota is nailed for now, and taking him off after 70m is a good sign - conserving his energies for the next game.
Like I say, I've got both - I sold Raphinha and Sarr to bring him in. I'm not chucking Foden. In your shoes, I'd drop Son.

I feel like it's of no concern to be a Jota owner for this whole entire useless period. If you've had him for as long as i have then you know it's a big pile of meh. Sure, the league's best attack. Ok. Not sure who else i would have in that type of price bracket though. Burned on Torres and Foden. But for the Merseysiders you only need Trent and Mo.

I've stubbornly stuck to Jota and it feels like...well, meh.

For me, he's always had the problem that he never gets a run of games. Now for the first time he is, and even when Bobby is technically fit, I think Klopp will conserve his hamstrings until AFCON. So whilst I'm frustrated in missing out in the haul this weekend, I'm positive that he'll do owners proud over the next couple of months.

My main concern is Foden's fitness. If he's fit, I believe he's a better option.
City's fixtures are so good I would rather have a City mid. Might switch to Gundogan.

You might be right, but, whenever I've tempted fate, City has disappointed me, attacking wise. Pool is just too good.

Jota is an insanely good option. His underlying stats are the best in the league, Liverpool attack is insane and the fixtures are fine too. He's delivering the FPL points too, with 7 goals and an assist in 10 starts. For 7.5M, that's an absolute bargain.

Goodbye Livramento. Is bench in order?

              Guaita
              TAA Cancelo James Alonso
              Salah Son Gallagher Jota
              Antonio Wilson

              Carson ESR White Davis

He's Saint's best player by far, but they are struggling. I got him for 4.0 and am happy to park him on the bench and go forward with 4 premium [THOSE 4} defenders. But on current club form, I'll start him less than I'd previously intended. For all that, there will be massive rotation in upcoming GWs, so he's a damn fine 3rd sub to come on if, say, both my City players are rested.
Re the OP, yeh, White is as good a sub as Livramento. Given my comment above, I'd be a little wary of having a non-playing sub, but your starters should be fine though the schedule, other than Cancelo.

Hard to argue any of that. I got away with starting Livra basically for most of the returns he got over the last several weeks. Not lucky mind you. Just desperate lol.

Cheers. I will go with Davis through this Christmas season. I think 2 solid bench players should be enough. I just didn't see myself playing Livra often and just banked the 0.3 profit.I kept White as they have a better D. And without Livramento...Soton would have been beat by at least 6/7 goals.

Since then Salah has 1G and 2A in 3 for only 19 points. Not sure it was a good time to sell, but maybe a better time to sell than any other point so far this season.

Which option would you prefer from gw16 onwards?

                    A) Ronaldo Mbeumo

                    B) King Bruno

                    C) Antonio Sancho/Rashford

Will be scouting united attackers closely in next 2 gws.

Disclaimer - I just rage punted Ronaldo as part of a -4 earlier today. I just don't think he's every going to represent good value. Even if he scores goals. compare to attacking mids getting an extra point every goal plus the odd CS points plus the assist threat, he's almost got to score 5 goals for every 3 from a Salah/Mane/Son/Rashford/Foden/Jota etc.

Of course the smart move would've been turfing him a month ago so I wasn't so close to the fixture turn to be haunted by the potential points ahead.

No one can tell what's in his head for sure, but it's a bit due to Spurs and also a bit due to him. He got closer to scoring than Son in the last game but doesn't look completely sharp. I really don't like his price though. Feel like he could disappoint and I'll have funds stuck there

I see that, and I didn't do it then because Spurs were the 2nd worst attack in the league and hadn't shown anything to think otherwise. But they finally showed something in the 2nd half vs Leeds

That loss against Mura is what concerns me a lot, and Conte post match review where he said they are not good enough to challenge. I will keep for the next 2 but I think having Spurs asset, particularly him with his price, will be a huge problem this season. Already owned him early on this season and he was awful. Conte will definitely try to change things, but I am still not sure on them as a whole. They rarely threatened against Leeds anyway, I think had very few shots all game. Keep Vardy imo.

Hi all. 1FT and 1.0 itb

                      Sanchez
                      TAA - Cancelo - Rudiger - Alonso
                      Salah - Bilva - Son - Jota
                      Toney - Antonio
                      Foster - Hwang - Brownhill - Livra

Hwang first to go imo but not sure if there's any good replacement. (6.7 FWD)

                      A) Hwang to ? (Pukki or Benteke?)
                      B) save
                      C) something else

Chilwell drop is what I wanted, but expected. Will now have 1 more day to mull over his replacement. Alonso or Rudiger.

Yeah, me too, but I'm wondering if a better replacement would be Robertson (in my case anyway since I have to make a decision on keep Foden or go Jota, and of all 3 I guess Robertson should now be more nailed now? and I'm not sure why Foden is being sold like he's out like Chilwell). If that makes any sense...

I would wait for Pep presser to be sure if Foden is fit, if he is then its a keep unless you want Jota. Gundo is coming back off a good game so I will also keep an eye on him.

I like Robbo but already have 3 Pool.

Struggling with my moves this week so any help is appreciated.

I have 2FT's and want to get Jota. My only routes to him are either a straight swap for Son which I don't want to do given Son's fixtures, or a downgrade elsewhere to free up the cash for Mbuemo > Jota. The downgrade would have to be Jimenez, however, i'm hesitant to ship him before Burnely. Can't see another transfer I can make so I have 2FTs next GW to do it then.

Should I make the straight swap with Son or go the downgrade Jimenez route? If the latter, who should I downgrade for? Would need to be 7.2 max.

                        Sanchez, Steele
                        TAA, Cancelo, Rudiger, Reguilon, Livramento
                        Salah, Son, ESR, Gallagher, Mbuemo
                        Vardy, Jimenez, Geldhardt

                        2FT's. 1.7itb

Think ASM is a decent pick given the next 3 fixtures if you want a short term, otherwise Tekkers is not bad and has been in good form recently.

You already have Jota, Gallagher, ESR. So i don't see any proper Foden replacement. Better stick with Foden until he is out for long term
