FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Tuesday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Norwich City winger Milot Rashica (£5.2m) was absent from tonight’s game, having tweaked his groin in training on the run-up to Gameweek 14.

Todd Cantwell (£5.3m) missed out with a Covid-related issue, with local press reports suggesting that he has come into contact with someone with the virus, rather than actually contracted it himself.

Elsewhere, Pascal Struijk (£4.4m) aggravated the injury which prevented him from playing 90 minutes at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, and was removed at half-time, with Marcelo Bielsa saying after the game:

“Same problem as Saturday’s. All of us value he played with the physical limitations he played with. It’s a knack that’s very generous and shows how good a teammate he is to all of us.”

On the suspension front, Ciaran Clark (£4.4m) will now miss Gameweek 15 as a result of his red card, having denied a clear goalscoring opportunity after hauling down Teemu Pukki (£5.8m) after just nine minutes. In better news, Eddie Howe’s side can at least welcome back Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) and Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) on Saturday, who have now served their respective bans.

Joel Ward’s (£4.5m) yellow card means that he’ll now miss the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, while Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) picked up his fourth booking of the season, and is now just one further caution away from suspension.

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

THREE IN FOUR FOR PUKKI BUT NORWICH LACK FINAL-THIRD IDEAS

Despite playing against 10-men for the majority of tonight’s St James’ Park encounter, Norwich City failed to capitalise and lacked any real creativity in the final-third. That’s been a theme throughout their season as the Canaries have managed just eight goals in 14 matches to date. That total includes two penalties, while even over the last four Gameweeks – a period which has seen them take eight points from a possible 12 – they have managed just five big chances.

However, when his team needed him most, Teemu Pukki stepped up with an excellent finish to earn his side a draw. The Finnish international has now netted three goals in his last four appearances, while his total of five for the season is only bettered by Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) and Michail Antonio (£8.1m) amongst all forwards. Despite that, with a tough schedule for the remainder of 2021, the best time to join the ‘Pukki party’ may have passed.

RAPHINHA ON PENALTIES

With Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) missing and Mateusz Klich (£5.4m) substituted at half-time, both of Leeds’ regular penalty takers were off the pitch when Marcelo Bielsa’s side were awarded a late penalty at Elland Road. That was also the case as recently as Gameweek 9, when Rodrigo (£6.3m) converted from the spot against Wolverhampton Wanderers. As a result, many were expecting the Spanish forward to step up again, but instead, and to the surprise of many – not least his 20.1% ownership – it was Raphinha (£6.7m) who took it on and scored to net his sixth goal of the campaign. Notably, the Brazilian wasn’t on the pitch against Wolves, though it remains to be seen just how far up the pecking order he is when everyone is available.

GALLAGHER DEEPER BUT BACK ON SET-PIECES

Despite tonight’s blank, Conor Gallagher put in another lively shift at Elland Road, though he was positioned a little deeper than usual. As a result, he could only muster two penalty box touches, with his one shot in the box and zero created chances well below his usual standards. However, with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) dropping to the bench as Patrick Vieira opted for Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.4m) alongside Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.5m) in the engine room, he was at least back on set-pieces, which could be key to his FPL prospects moving forward.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 14

Christos Tzolis (£4.8m) ends Tuesday’s action top for shots in the box (3), with a host of players just behind on two.

Notably, that includes Christian Benteke (£6.4m), who appeared off the bench on 68 minutes only to squander a couple of chances, including one at the back post.

In terms of chances created, Newcastle United duo Callum Wilson (£7.4m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.9m), plus Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), recorded three, followed by several Norwich players, as they pushed for an equaliser at St James’ Park.

I picked Dennis after seeing his goal against united in gw12. Read that kings stats was somewhat better but dennis kept the steam up against Leicester in gw13 with a goal and he seems to be the spearhead in the attack. Wonder if his injury affect him though. I'd prefer Dennis if fully fit.

Not the week to do it I'm afraid, long-term sure, but have to look at the week you're doing it in too and you're giving up two players with top fixtures, could be some serious points left on the table. What points are you expecting Jota and the Watford boys / your bench option that will come in to score at the weekend?

one crazy way to bring Jota in:

    Raph + Livra ---> Jota + 3.9 def (2 FTs)

    Rest of team:

    Sanchez Steele

    Cancelo Rudi TAA White

    Son Salah Gallagher Allan

    Toney Hwang Vardy

will do Hwang ---> King after next GW.

Patience is key in this game. Players blanking 1 game or 2 but are proven should always be given time. Vardy is the perfect example in the previous game. Good players will always return eventually.

He had 4 returns before the 4 blanks, many jumped to Kane and so far Vardy still outscores him even in the last 5 gw's.

Yes. If you had him before this gw, then it's an easy keep for a few gw's at least.

        2. Holmes
          • 10 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

Vardy is not the right example for patience thing though. Just because someone has scored in 4 consecutive games doesnt mean we stick with him forever. That would be like sticking with Salah even after he blanks in next 4-5 games just because he had loads of points till date.

What are we Antonio owners getting for patience? 10 returns in first 8 games. 4 blanks in last 4 and no guarantee of him returning in upcoming games.

          1. ZeBestee
            • 9 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Ask his owners who stuck with him for his 2 pointers and last weekend return if they are happy they were patient or not.

Fixture change are important as well but many bought him at the wrong time and some sold him again at the wrong time. He will now go on on a run and everyone will go back to him again only to miss out on the likes of Kane etc

You can keep your team same for the entire season and still probably come out with a better OR than tinkering here and there. Patience and timing is key.

            1. Holmes
              • 10 Years
              2 years, 4 months ago

Timing is key, agreed. Patience is good within limits and 3 blanks are more than enough even for the greatest of all players.

I'm not sure if Vardy would have been thrilled to see that haul, more likely to be relieved that he didnt blank again. As a Son and Antonio owner, I would feel same if they get something this week.

You could look at a situation as opportunity or with FOMO, different manager has different approach and I'm not against any of them. In fantasy world, I wouldnt mind going against the odds. Different story when it comes to reality.

Vardy doesnt fall in Salah category though and we are aware that Vardy often goes on a blank run. There is no guarantee of him getting back on scoring streak either, it was just WAT.

Both Antonio and Jesus have had 4 blanks too.

        As had Wilson.

It's frustrating when a whole forward line had been misfiring and relying upon defenders and midfield points.

Was holding Vardy through 1,1,2,2 for a 12 pointer only for him to be benched this gameweek good? I beg to differ. Averages out to 2.25 points a game over 5

He's a striker, but like most players they dip in and out of form during a season.

Truth is that no one knows when he will start scoring again, so you have to either trust in your belief that his blanks are just temporary and stick with him, or trust that you don't think it's going to get any better any time soon and sell him.

No one else can make that decision for you and no one can tell you what he's going to do next in FPL terms either.

My problem with Vardy, is not that he blanks (everybody blanks at some point) it’s that he’s so expensive, and you have to make sacrifices to afford him. So holding Vardy instead of going cheaper may be the reason you can’t afford that Chelsea double up in defense or can’t afford a Jota in midfield, and when the alternatives are firing and Vardy is blanking it hurts more

      1. Cok3y5murf

He's actually not that expensive. Only 2 goals behind Salah. He's about 0.5 overpriced at best and still going strong at his age.

I had Vardy, double Chelsea, and Jota for weeks with a TV of only 103ish and 2m+ left itb. Wasn't hard

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA James Cancelo Livra Duffy
    Salah Jota Raphinha Gallagher ESR
    Toney Kane Antonio

    2FT 0itb

I can’t see anything I would do with my 2FT for this week with no money in the bank. Would you burn a transfer this week assuming no injuries?

    A) Alonso in for Livramento big 5 at back benching Gallagher and alike stronger squad

    B) Mendy for Sanchez

How do you see this? I have 2.6 to burn

Jimenez and Brownhill -> 4.5 fwd and Jota?

Radical approach: Son to Jota, Hwang to Watkins and Gilmour to Bowen (or Cornet?) for a hit. Conservative approach: Just Hwang out, but would have to be for King or Dennis, save one FT. Or shift Foster due to injury.

    Morning all,

Are most going with Salah(C) again at the weekend? Thinking about going for TAA again after last weekend (gone for Salah tonight though). I'm aware it's Liverpool so this could go out the window but Wolves don't tend to concede too many, only conceded more than once in a game 3 times in 13 so far this season, and themselves have blanked 6 times in 13.

Anyone thinking of going with anyone else? Kane v Norwich is tempting too but unless he kicks into gear tomorrow it's unlikely I'll do it. Cancelo v Watford too is a big possibility.

Arsenal and Saints didn't concede too many before Liverpool either

True, although I do think Arsenal's defence is overrated and Ralph said he went with a different system v Liverpool and admitted it was a mistake. https://www.thisisanfield.com/2021/11/ralph-hasenhuttl-admits-his-big-tactical-mistake-vs-on-fire-liverpool/amp/

Wolves are very hard to predict generally but they're pretty well drilled and organised, not saying they definitely won't concede a few but I'm not sure they'll be easy to break down.

I'll be considering it if Jota continues to intercept Salah points today

I'm trying to pick a differential. If Reguilion does well, I may go for him again. Trent is a good shout.

Wouldnt bet on Kane yet, Norwich are not conceding many plus as you said, they themselves are poor. Gap between games is only 2 days as well, Norwich have 2 extra days rest.

Jimi probably needs to go now, but that means some sort of shake-up here. With 2FTs, what do you prefer?

    A) Just Jimi to Watkins or Toney, save 1FT
    B) Jimi and Saka to Watkins and Bowen
    C) Jimi and Saka to Toney and Maddison
    D) Jimi, Saka and Gilmour to Dennis, Gundo and say McGinn for a hit
    E) Jimi, Saka and Gilmour to Dennis, Maddison and Bowen for a hit

Would like to be ready for fixture congestion, but unsure of best approach.

Why needs to go? He is a good and proven fpl asset, wouldn't get rid, especially that there are not many good options. Unless, you need funds, then I would think about downgrading to King maybe.

Other strikers are Vardy and Antonio. Think I might have too much funds tied up up front, and Jimi have the worst fixtures. And would not like to burn FT.

Only issue with getting him in for the good run is the Burnley-Arsenal-Norwich run all takes place within 6 days, and then the Soton-Watford-Palace run takes place within 7 (with exactly 48 hours between the kick-offs of Soton and Watford). Everyone will be prone to rotation but I really wonder if he's worth going for again during this period, could easily see him missing 3 of those 6 matches and can't see him finishing any.

Just based on fpl returns basis? Cause he was the best player on the pitch by a mile- his deliveries wer quality and he was a threat throughout. He even got the official man of the match

Imho: he was getting into good position, but generally he was quite poor on the ball: 60% sucesfull passes, 1 sucesfull cross, 5 out of 15 duels won, 31 lost posessions. For his standards it was pretty bad performance imho.
