FPL Rate My Team surgery with five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman

There is yet another deadline for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) upon us and the questions are, as ever, coming thick and fast in our comments section.

Most of these are requests for advice on transfer dilemmas or team advice and it’s with that in mind that we’ve asked five-time top 1k finisher and Scout’s Deputy Editor, Tom Freeman, to answer some of them over the next 90 minutes.

He’ll be on hand to reply to comments below the line of this piece and will get through as many as he can until the next article goes up at 11am GMT, with priority given to questions from Premium Members if there is a deluge.

As ever, you can chip in with your own opinions on the raft of RMT requests filtering through – and naturally, feel free to ignore the article subject matter and talk about any other wider FPL topics that you’d normally be musing on.

Don’t forget that, if it’s an algorithmic answer you’re after rather than an opinion-based one, we also have a ‘Rate My Team’ tool available in the Premium Members Area (where there is currently a Black Friday/Cyber Monday discount on annual subscriptions), which gives points projections for this weekend and beyond – an example of which is below:

I still haven't pulled the trigger.

Anyone got strong opinions either way on Raphinha > Gundogan?

    Team is:

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo James Alonso Livra
    Salah Jota Gallagher XX Brownhill
    Kane Antonio Toney

I'm very much leaning towards doing it. But let's see what Pep says.

In the same boat, have 1 FT and could do Raph > Gundo.

I’ve had Raph for ages so I don’t want to transfer him out before two good GWs. Happened to me with so many players before then they haul

I'd go for it but I'd be a little wary of Gundogan playing deeper once KDB, Foden and Grealish are back. But it should be a good move, the fixtures are excellent

Hmm, I do like Gundogan, put him in last week's Scout Picks, I'm just a bit wary about his longer-term prospects with De Bruyne coming back.

Palace have really struggled defending set-pieces this season, too, so could easily see a Raphinha assist tonight.

Yeah I'm wary of the Raphinha haul from set pieces. But the way I see it, Raph is leaving my team in 2 weeks max anyway. I'm gonna make this move next week if I don't do it this week.

Thoughts on Villa's defensive chances vs City?

We do look much more organised, better shape etc under Gerrard, but this is City, I'd be surprised if they don't put a couple past us.

I'm not really worried though about anything. My team is ahead of the curve.

It's purely whether or not Raph with CRY outscore Gundo with avl.

    7. Dr. Rog
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

      I've already done it.

I think that he is a great option, and if it doesnt work out the 7-8m slot is important to have as so many high pp90 players live there - all the city mids worth buying + jota + mount. Its an easy sideways move later on.

Who do you think is a bigger priority for the next few gameweeks?

    A) Alonso
    B) Gundo

    1. The Mastermind

Neither a priority, Alonso will get more points I think

      1. Karan14

I think they are a priority right now tbh. Best options in the game after TAA, Cancelo, James, Jota & Salah IMO.

          I agree.

I'm getting Gundo this week. But I think Alonso if you don't have him could be more important.

        2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

Gundo is only a "priority" because he hauled 2 days ago (with the assist being extremely lucky). Most barely thought of him before that. Not saying he's not a good option but it's much like the fervour for Jota after it turned out Foden was injured and moreso after his haul. A couple of blanks in these next few days and people will be thinking of shipping them

To be fair to FFS Gundo was in the GW13 team, that wasn't a reaction to the haul that followed...

              • 3 Years

I know, but the clamour to get him from so many as if it is a necessity is all I mean, that has only come from the haul

Yeah you're right, he's still a City mid so comes with baggage!

          2. Karan14
            • 8 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Yeah I would probably put Alonso ahead of him. But Gundo's numbers have not been bad at all. 0.66 npxg + xa with a chance of being on pens when Mahrez not on the pitch is pretty decent. Although there is always that rotation risk with City players and team dynamics keep changing (eg Foden playing too wide last few games but we jumped on him because he was playing striker).

            1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
              • 3 Years
              2 years, 4 months ago

That's true his numbers have been good for pretty much all season. He's also a pretty settled member of the squad. I don't dislike him at all as an option for the record, fixture run coming up is great and we know he kicked into a great run of form around this time last year (I was lucky with him myself as I hopped on a few weeks before most), I just think another game or so (particularly if a few of the players that have been out are back) could be vital for information and seeing if he looks like he might do it again. I was planning on bringing in Bernardo but had an eye on Gundogan too but I think I'll be waiting a little longer myself now to see if anything sways me one way or another in the next week

              1. Karan14
                • 8 Years
                2 years, 4 months ago

Yeah thats where im leaning towards also specially as I have Alonso to prioritize too. Expect KDB, Foden & Grealish to be back by GW16 at the latest so team dynamics will change again for City. From what ive been reading Gundo does best when Bilva is playing No 8 which coincides with KDB's injuries of course so waiting another game or two seems sensible.

Tempted to bring in Alonso for the cheapies, or use the cash to upgrade Vardy to Kaku/Kane/Roanldo at some in the future:

    Sanchez
    Cancelo - James - TAA
    Salah - Jota - ESR - Raphinha
    Toney - Antonio - Vardy

    Steele - Livramento - White - Allan

Current plan is to set up the team as follows:
    Ramsdale,

    Salah(C), Mbeumo, Cornet, Son,
    Toney, Kane.

    (Foster) (Guehi) (Brownhill) (Davis).

    Hiya Tom,

I think that not owning the likes of Ramsdale, Jota and Toney are hurting me at the moment but I'm looking to the future points scorers to hopefully make themselves known!

    Any issues here?

    Guaita
    TAA, James, Cancelo, Reguilon
    Salah (C), Gundogan, Hudson-Odoi
    Kane (vc), Wilson, Pukki

    Gunnarsson, Gallagher, Smith-Rowe, Livramento

I have brought in Hudson-Odoi in and still have 1FT and 1.5ITB, but looking to roll it if possible.

Not sure I agree with this. Despite rotation I think City are going to bang in 4 or 5 on a few occasions with these upcoming fixtures & I'd recommend at least one of Bernardo, Gundogan, Foden or Jesus. I currently have Bernardo (& Cancelo) & may bring in Jesus

I have the two most-nailed in the front 3: Foden and Jesus

Been unlucky with points, international break rests and this annoying but clearly temporary Foden knock

I see myself holding the triple-up until GW18 or 19, when Antonio might come in for Jesus

That's if the Foden knock doesn't extend much further in Pep's presser today

Pep is waiting for managers to jump on board then he will smash their balls

They'll all be rested in the fixture congestion, if that's what you mean

A high percentage of template picks in FPL will get at least one rest between now and GW19

Best to bring in for Raphinha?

    1) Mount. I feel like Chelsea are going to beat Watford like 3/4 goals and Mount starting could be huge. Or he is a risk?
    2) Gundo
    3) Bilva
    4) Foden (if fit)
    5) Maddison

Hi Tom - have had a decent start to the season and have been bouncing around within the top 20k for the past few weeks, until this past GW, when the lack of Jota and not having any performing FWDs punished me (dropped to 41k). Have been holding onto my WC to play from GW16, but wondering if I should do anything with this lot right now:
    Sanchez, Guaita
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Coufal, Livra
    Mbeuma, ESR, Salah, Gallagher, Brownhill
    Jimenez, Antonio, Ronaldo
    1 FT + 0.1 ITB
(I strangely feel like this team could actually perform this week, and trying to get to Jota means sacrificing Antonio (for King) and Mbuemo for a -4)

It feels demoralising starting Vardy even though it looks like he will be benched.

Any reason why you think he would be benched?

Rodgers said this after the Watford game:

"That’s the juggling act with him at the age that he’s at: if he plays in midweek, it’s tough for him because then he’s maybe not quite got the energy.”

So he's going to inevitably be rested either this week or at the weekend, maybe the tiniest possibility of him playing both if Leicester are out of sight around 50 mins against Soton and then comes off early at the weekend but I doubt that'll happen. The worry I'd have if I owned him is what games he'll play in the next batch. Likely won't play in Europa next week but after that Leicester have 4 games in 14 days.
