FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: Thursday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Thursday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.2m) missed tonight’s win over Arsenal with a hand injury after Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) trod on it in Gameweek 13.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick also provided an update on several other first-teamers, including Nemanja Matic (£4.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m), in an interview with MUTV:

“Nemanja (Matic) has picked up a little niggle, he felt his hamstring.

Hudson-Odoi stood on Aaron’s (Wan-Bissaka) hand the other day, so he’s in a fair bit of pain, it was touch and go but he didn’t make it for today.

Harry (Maguire) is back in the team, Eric (Bailly) did ever so well the other day but it’s a decision I had to make.

We’re just being careful with Luke (Shaw) and assessing it day by day, hopefully he won’t be too far away.”

Elsewhere, Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) made the bench after his muscle problem, and replaced Emile Smith Rowe (£6.0m) after 70 minutes, suggesting there are no further issues ahead of this weekend’s clash at Everton.

On the suspension front, it was a quiet night with the only booking arriving at Old Trafford, where Scott McTominay (£5.4m) picked up his third caution of the season.

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

RONALDO ON PENALTIES AHEAD OF FIXTURE SWING

With Ralf Rangnick watching on from the stands, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.3m) produced an impressive display against Arsenal, with his second-half brace taking him up to 12 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions since his Old Trafford return. Notably, it was the Portuguese superstar who stepped up to take United’s 70th minute penalty, which he comfortably converted with Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) watching on, in an excellent audition ahead of the Red Devils’ fixture swing:

Man Utd’s remaining fixtures in 2021

On Ronaldo taking the penalty, Fernandes said:

“We didn’t have a chat. I missed the last one so I trust him in the same way I trust myself. It was time for Cristiano to take the penalty because I took the last one and missed it. It doesn’t matter who gets on the penalty.”

However, the playmaker was able to get in on the act, sweeping home his first goal since Gameweek 4. Without penalties, he is certainly a harder sell given his premium price tag, but it is worth noting that all five of his goals this season have arrived from open-play, while his 2.93 expected assists (xA) figure ranks second amongst all outfield players, only trailing Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.0m).

SON SHINES AS CONTE INFLUENCE STARTING TO SHOW

It is still early in Antonio Conte’s reign, but Tottenham Hotspur are becoming more difficult to play through. As a result, it’s now two clean sheets in three since the Italian tactician’s appointment, with the advanced Sergio Reguilon (£5.1m) – who has now recorded a goal and assist in his last two appearances – averaging over eight points per match during that time.

This wasn’t a complete Spurs performance by any means, but they showed more resilience at the back, while their 2.16 expected goals (xG) total is the most they have achieved in a single Premier League match in 2021/22. Key to that attacking display was Son Heung-min (£10.4m), who netted his fifth league goal of the campaign and was perhaps unfortunate not to return more, having been involved in the opener.

As for Harry Kane (£12.3m), the England captain registered a couple of goal attempts, including one big chance, but it does feel that regardless of what happens against Norwich City on Sunday, most of his owners are probably already eyeing a switch to a certain Portuguese forward.

“I am not worried about Harry Kane. He played a really good game. He had chances to score, but the goalkeeper was very good. He was in every offensive situation and the point of reference. To have a player like this and to play with his commitment, desire and passion makes me very happy with his performance. It doesn’t matter if he scores as long as he plays in this way – I am delighted. Tottenham is the first thing we need to think about.” – Antonio Conte discussing Harry Kane’s performance after the game

MBEUMO BLANKS AGAIN AS BRENTFORD STRUGGLE TO CREATE

After tonight’s blank, Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) has now failed to find the back of the net since his visit to West Ham United in Gameweek 7. Across that run of six starts, the budget midfielder has attempted seven shots in the box, though none have been big chances, while his 0.63 xG total is bettered by five Brentford team-mates, including defenders Pontus Jansson (£4.6m) and Rico Henry (£4.5m).

There is no doubt Mbeumo has been a tad unfortunate this season, hitting the woodwork on six separate occasions, though his goal threat has notably dried up. However, there is an argument – mainly due to his budget price tag – to persist a little while longer, with Brentford set to take on Leeds United and Watford next.

Bryan Mbeumo’s xG shot map since his last goal in Gameweek 7

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 14

A couple of big names end the Gameweek at the top of the expected goal involvement (xGI) table, with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Cristiano Ronaldo registering a whopping four and three big chances respectively.

Sergio Reguilon also features, with his cross for Son’s goal key to him being so high, just ahead of Raphinha (£6.7m) and Callum Wilson (£7.4m), both of whom benefitted from penalties.

Elsewhere, Raheem Sterling (£10.6m) and budget midfielder Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) both created five chances, with Bruno Fernandes just behind on four, taking his tally to 42 for the season, more than any other player.

Not seen much written about Anthony Gordon, but at 4.5 playing on the wing for Everton, with great fixtures from GW19, he’s definitely one to watch.
Has taken a couple of corners too.

The problem is the inconsistency in selection.
And when Rafa really needs to pull out some results is he going to have the faith of a young player?

We're already seeing it in Rondon and I think they are also getting some bodies back.
But of course, if he was to become nailed every week then he's instantly at the top of the 4.5s.

Morning all, team looking like this. 2 FT's, 0.5 itb

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA James* Alonso Cancelo Livra
    Salah Jota Gallagher ESR Brownhill
    Vardy Jesus Antonio

If James is fine, how does this look for a move?

Livra + Antonio -> Reguilon + Dennis. Leaves enough itb to move Vardy -> Ronaldo in the future.

I prefer King as he plays central striker, and will take penalties when Sarr is out or misses a few. I owned Dennis earlier in the year and he was great for his value, although played quite wide. Not sure if he’s still so wide but that would be the disadvantage with him

Kane owners, are you keeping? I feel it may be the right time to jump ship to CR7. Spurs played ok but they defended more than attacking yesterday night, their quality made the difference but playing against decent teams, if they don't improve, they will be getting little out of those games.

Why give him the Norwich game? Watching him is painful. They lack real quality in that midfield. Kane has to come back to make those dashing passes and then the likes of Son/Reg/Moura are the ones who will benefit.

Because it's Norwich at home and probably the best fixture for any team.

Do agree it's painful watching him this season (for Spurs) and the plan was always to move him on for CR7/Lukaku after gw15 anyway

He would have been a different beast at City, shame he was not given green light to move on.

I wanted to keep for Norwich but honestly not sure anymore. The next question is whether to sell to Ronaldo or downgrade out of the price range all together and if you really want a United asset go for a cheaper midfield option

I've created plans with Ronaldo and with Sancho...

        And I prefer Sancho

Penalties haven't been frequent this season, even for Man U, so I'm trying not to let that influence my decision

Whoever I buy in GW16 will be here for a while. A long while, most likely, because it's going to be hard to justify switching... So it's kinda "make or break"

        1. Lord of Ings
          • 8 Years

If Ronaldo was a guaranteed starter During this Christmas period He probably would’ve been my first choice but asking him to play every game during Christmas period is being unreasonable.
The thing with ronaldo fpl wise is he’s hella selfish and will get a ton of opportunities to score and likely to haul vs weaker opposition whenever he plays
The only one who you could actually captain against the likes of Salah.(since Kane has gone off the boil and lukaku doesn’t look ready yet)

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 5 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Thing is, I'd probably cap Cancelo, TAA/Jota (AFCON), James/Alonso... Before Foden and whoever I get from Man U

I'm not looking for an alternative captain to Salah. Only when Salah starts looking horrible

So it's not influenced my decision

What I keep wondering is... That didn't look like a Rangnick team last night. No press, sitting behind the ball and waiting for it, etc... I'm still waiting for Rangnick's first game to see how he uses 'em

Ronaldo's fatigue when subbed off wasn't the best sign either

But GW15 is everything for me now. From formation to starters to eye test 🙂

        2. Thomas Magnum
          • 8 Years

I think with Ronaldo you have to take the approach where you expect goals from open play and if he somehow scores a free kick or a penalty then it’s a bonus, but not to expect them too frequently. And also remember Ronaldo is a guy that can score at any moment so not be put off my him only playing 30 mins cause that may be all he needs. The problem I have with Ronaldo, much the same with say Kane is that they cost lots for a player you’d rarely captain and over time, they should in theory score well but when you consider the alternative options plus the money you save then they lose a bit of appeal to me

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 5 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Yeah... For me, it's Sancho + DCL (Gray on the bench, DDG from GW16) vs Ronaldo + Gray (Gilmour on the bench, McCarthy until GW18)

I really, really prefer my team with Sancho for multiple reasons. But if Ronaldo proves to be a must-have, I must have him and accept any sacrifice needed

      2. ZeBestee
        • 9 Years

Do you reckon Watkins will be a decent option? They played Brighton, Palace and City in the last 3 and he came out with 2 returns, Villa also now playing much better under Stevie G.

        1. Thomas Magnum
          • 8 Years

I think he is a good option, probably the best in that price range. If I was to bring in a forward other than Ronaldo he would be it, especially as Ings is out. If he does flop then at least DCL (hopefully) shouldn’t be too far away and could be an easy switch over

I've often wondered whether this 3 player max should be increased.
For instance, with Salah, TAA & Jota there's absolutely no way of owning Mane, yet he is equal 2nd for total points out of mids/fwds behind only Salah.

        1. Thomas Magnum

I wouldn’t totally be against the idea. If you can afford to fit them all in then why not. Or maybe even set the cap at say 5 per club but you can’t have a triple up in one position you’d have to choose up to 2 mids/forwards/defenders and a keeper or something like that

    Guaita (£4m)
    TAA, James, Cancelo, Livra, (Rudiger)
    Salah, Son, Foden, Jota, Raphinha
    Jimi (Dennis, £4.5m)

It’s really tough, would be Antonio with those fixtures but he’s been blaming a lot.

Jesus obviously attractive but worry about starts.

Not too excited by the other two but could be talked into Watkins. Wilson would be for two games only so kicking the can down the road a bit.

I think you've missed Reguilón's only good games, especially after Norwich

Spurs have neither defended well nor attacked well. They've been facing teams in an even worse condition, especially injury crises

      It depends on Foden's position

Since Grealish is back, the regular front 3 could easily return to Jesus Foden Grealish. If that's the case, with Bilva back to AM, I'd say Foden

If Pep has changed things again, and Grealish is somehow now out of favour (I've seen no proof of this, but it's Pep), then Foden out wide might be equal or get fewer points than Bilva

Apart from the 2 goals, and trying very hard to impress, has CR7 done well as a whole yesterday? Do we expect him to go on a run now?

Fixtures are excellent so we have no issue on that front.

He’ll go missing for 75 mins but deliver the sucker punch when it most matters
If Ronaldo can start even 4/5 during this period he’s gonna be an absolutely insane option.
Sancho is also a good option but he won’t get half the volume of chances Ronaldo will

I watched the first half, he was trying really hard, all were trying to be fair. They also moved the ball much faster than I have seen them this season. They are improving as a whole and there is that heart and determination to win games, which is another positive. I just feel he will start banging those 2/3 goals a game and all of a sudden he becomes a must have. Next few fixtures will tell us a lot but I have a feeling not owning him may be an issue soon. Confidence is huge in football.

Honestly if there’s any player you can even consider captaining against salah some point in the season it’s gotta be ronaldo(even though it might turn out to be a mistake but have to move out of perma cap salah sometime soon!)
Ronaldo could be decisive in shifting templates.

If he starts against Palace and looks half decent again im getting him in for GW16. He's known to demolish weaker teams anyways.

I also expect him to start but it would be nice to see United play PL & CL this week to have a better idea about Ralf's style of play.

    Sanchez
    TAA - Cancelo - Rudiger - Alonso
    Salah - Bilva - Son - Jota
