Watford v Man City team news: Foden, Gundogan and Grealish return

After some underwhelming Fantasy returns in the first four Gameweek 15 fixtures of the day, there is a real chance for owners of Manchester City players to steal a march on those going without any this evening.

Pep Guardiola’s troops are away at Watford, who are now the only club without a clean sheet in 2021/22.

Kick-off at Vicarage Road is at 17:30 GMT.

There aren’t any real shocks with the two teamsheets, despite Pep Guardiola making five changes from the midweek win over Aston Villa.

Jack Grealish makes his first City start in a month, while Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden are all recalled after missing out through injury or suspension on Wednesday.

Guardiola’s pre-match comments about Foden, released from embargo on Friday evening, did plant a seed of doubt about whether the England international would feature from the off but he’s thrown straight back into the action tonight.

Nathan Ake, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus make way from the starting XI, with the latter’s demotion to the bench perhaps the closest thing to an eyebrow-raising decision from the unpredictable City boss.

Watford’s team news is much more straightforward, with Claudio Ranieri making just the one change from the side that began the 2-1 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday. It’s an expected one, too, as Danny Rose comes in for the injured Adam Masina at left-back.

GAMEWEEK 15 LINE-UPS

Watford XI: Bachmann, Femenia, Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Rose, Louza, Dennis, Cleverley, Sissoko, Pedro, King.

Subs: Elliot, Ngakia, Morris, Gosling, Fletcher, Tufan, Kabasele, Hernandez, Kucka.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Walker, Gundogan, Rodri, Grealish, Silva, Sterling, Foden.

Subs: Steffen, Carson, Stones, Ake, Jesus, Zinchenko, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Mahrez.

I made a post earlier re. 4.0 & under defenders, which is very scarce at the moment.
The only option I personally like currently is Goode from Brentford, however, the unknown return date of Jørgensen has me slightly wary.

Manquillo, Newcastle's fixtures are too difficult.
Similar to B Williams + can't play against United

The other option is Amartey, 3.8. Leicester are still defensively vulnerable, is Rodgers' patience wearing thin with Söyüncü?
Amartey has actually started 7 games this season, which does not quite reflect his season total, 12 points. You'd of thought fewer games.

Is this to save cash? I am staying away from them 4.0 def this season.

Yes. However, depending on the fixtures I could start.
Both Goode/Amartey have a pretty nice matchup next week.

I was looking at this price range last week, and there really aren't many good options so I ended up bringing B Williams into my side. The thinking behind it was I won't be BB'ing anytime soon, and he'll just sit last on the bench but worst case if he does see the field then hopefully he'll be good for 1-2 points. Manquillo alright cause he's a FB but considering he wouldn't see the field, and he hasn't done much, I thought may as well just save the 0.1. It would be nice if we knew how long Goode would keep his spot for though.

If you're going to spend 6m on a defensive asset, why would you want one who doesn't provide reasonable attacking returns?

I just like the look of City’s fixtures tbh. James, TAA & Cancelo are the only attacking defenders who I think are worth investing in.

Didn’t see the City game tonight - did Dennis look much better as a pick than King? FPL site shows Dennis with >100k transfers in already, 8x that of King despite them being a similar price now. Was planning to bring King in later this week so checking I’m not missing anything!

    1. Pep's Money Laundry
      • 8 Years

I wasn't completely focused on the game but Dennis did look really lively, I can't say I noticed King much in the game however he did have a great chance that he put wide

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

He had a couple of shots on target, one which pulled a good save from Ederson, looked lively indeed. That being said King had a very good chance that he should have scored late on (but think that was set up by Dennis too)

No worries, in the same boat as you, been planning on bringing one in and was favouring King but have to say I'm worried it'll be the wrong call, Dennis shouldn't be able to keep up his great form but every time I see him he looks so confident and troublesome for defenders. Think I read a rumour today that he might not want to go to AFCON too so that would be a big plus in his favour.

Salah cap. Wait a week to get Ronaldo?

In that case then yeah, imo there's not even a point in getting CR7 if not gonna captain, but yeah if you're set on it then wait a week i'd say, see if he keeps this up.

Hmmm, was thinking of something like Kane to King and possibly Allan to Sancho (depending on how things look tomorrow) for next week if no pressing issues. Cornet injury a bit of a spanner in the works, but frees up a space to bring in a WH mid (likely Bowen) for their good run but if I do that I'd be pricing myself out of a possible Sancho move. Will be an interesting week

I'm looking at nearly the exact same moves Kane out for King to raise funds for midfielders. Was keen on Sancho but just not sure he justifies his price tag, will have to keep an eye on how he looks this weekend of course though.

Yeah, I suppose the thing with Sancho is he's dropped a lot from his initial price point so it doesn't feel as bad as it could be but it is a punt for sure with him not really having a chance to get going until now (and punting on Kane with no real form and just for fixtures hasn't worked so doing it again could be disastrous). Guess it's best just to see how the week goes, more games for a lot of teams yet

Adam Armstrong is done at Soton right? Can’t see him start the next one with Broja so clinical. Maybe in for Adams but doubt it.

Adams had scored 6 goals in his last 8 all comps + country and with a week's break, I'd say highly unlikely.

Hassenhutl said they didn’t know he was hurt until after the game (like he didn’t tell anyone)
And that played a roll in conceding.

      Don’t think he was happy.

The staff knew that he was hurt but were told it only impacted his long kicking.

With this information, it is the correct decision to keep him on the pitch as he is still a better option than Southampton's 3rd keeper, Lewis.
However, not being able to move or jump Hasenhuttl said a change would've been made instantly with this information, Southampton did not use their 3rd sub either so it was available.

So, McCarthy reportedly tore his hamstring during the game yet didn't notify the coaching staff re. the severity of it.

The coaching staff were led to believe that it only prevented his long kicking and thus kept him on the pitch with Lyanco (the CB) sometimes taking the kick-out.

When in actual fact he couldn't jump and thus he called for JWP to run back when the freekick was taken to protect the side of the goal and in doing so completely plays Maupay onside after it rebounds into the wall.

A scathing response from Hasenhuttl post-game, two weeks ago at Norwich he was also cited by the manager for losing the game.

Ridiculous situation. Thrown under the bus by Hassenhutl who apparently didn’t know he was injured despite having to have other players take his goal kicks. Murphy (for once) nailed his analysis of the situation on MOTD

No, it is not at all.

As I mentioned above and stated by Hasenhuttl in his press conference they knew he was injured.

A McCarthy not being able to kick the ball long, however, was still the best option. The substitute goalkeeper was the 3rd keeper (Forster injured) who has only ever played for Southampton once in the cup in 2017.

Is this serious? You’re saying yourself Hassenhuttl knew he was injured - why’s he blaming him?! What is this?! Take him off for someone who isn’t injured. You don’t get to be Southampton’s third choice keeper without being pretty good. I really like him as a manager but please don’t defend this.

Okay, please read this comment and then you will hopefully be more informed.

All the coaching staff knew he was injured, correct.
McCarthy reported that the injury was causing him pain to kick the ball long. And thus an easy decision was made for the CB to take some kick-ins, a solution was found, or so it was thought.

When Brighton had their free-kick in the 98th minute he instructs JWP, only just prior to sprint backwards + cover the other side of the goal because he can't jump or move powerfully. The ball then hits the wall and Maupay is alone in the box, onside, the Southampton players confused as to who is playing him on.
Different messaging to his captain to that of what he had told the medical staff.

For Hasenhuttl to have known this information post-game so quickly JWP, the captain has spoken out.

                He has no choice.
How else does he explain JWP sprinting back to protect his line, which directly plays Maupay onside?

I think the mistake was his in not substituting him prior to this.

No, because McCarthy makes a good save against Maupay when he on has to move minimally.

McCarthy experiencing pain to kick the ball long as it was thought, (a club's first-choice keeper) is still a better scenario than the 3rd choice keeper.

That would be the same for all clubs.

If Hasenhuttl doesn't say what he does post-game then he is not protecting his captain.

Protecting his captain are the facts and 100% honesty.

Completely agree but if he substitutes his injured keeper before then he’s not in a position where he’s having to defend his captain

Hasenhuttl stated that if he knew the severity of the injury then the substitute would have been made.

As I said, the first-choice keeper experiencing some pain to kick the ball long is still a better scenario than the club's third-choice keeper.

Yep, you’ve definitely said it and I don’t think it’s ever as simple as that. If an injury has gone as far as that of course it is not limited to kicking. Appreciate the responses mate but I don’t think we’re going to agree.

Well, I can't think of a team in the PL that subs their 1st keeper off for the 3rd keeper if the issue that has been sustained is that kicking the ball long hurts.
Southampton don't typically play the ball out very long so we are mainly talking goal kicks, which a CB can take.

If you think a Klopp would sub Allison off for Adrian or a Tuchel would sub a Mendy off for Bettinelli because he is experiencing pain to take the goal kick, then that's fine. That's your opinion.

I know I should roll but I’m willing to take a hit for Bernardo I think.

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, James
    Salah, Rashford, Jota, Gallagher
    Vardy, Antonio, Dennis

    Foster, Alonso, Livramento, Brownhill

    1ft 0.0itb

    a/ Alonso + Gallagher > Bernardo + 4.0 (-4)
    b/ Alonso > Reguillon
    c/ Vardy + Brownhill > Broja + Bernardo (-4, 2.5itb)
