The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders

We round up the main Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Wednesday’s two Gameweek 20 fixtures, with the results of both matches further consolidating Manchester City’s position at the top of the Premier League table.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

KEY FPL TALKING POINTS

JAMES INJURY

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 2

Reece James (£6.4m) didn’t even last half an hour of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Brighton, with FPL’s third-most-owned defender barely able to walk off the field when being withdrawn with a muscle problem and later sighted on crutches.

A still-seething Thomas Tuchel was taciturn in his post-match interview and offered very little on his wing-back but the fact that it’s a muscle injury suggests that his involvement against Liverpool is in serious doubt.

“No prognosis. Hamstring injury.” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James

Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) was also withdrawn at the interval with a back injury, while Tuchel revealed in his post-match press conference that Timo Werner (£8.6m) wasn’t even back in training yet after his recent Covid diagnosis.

“It’s too early but it looks not good.” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James and Andreas Christensen

Brighton boss Graham Potter meanwhile offered an update on Leandro Trossard (£6.2m), who missed out on Wednesday night.

“Hopefully he’s back at the weekend. We’ll hopefully get one or two players back.” – Graham Potter on Leandro Trossard

CHELSEA DEFENCE SIGNS OFF WITH A WHIMPER

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 3

For a lot of Fantasy managers, Gameweek 21 will be a jumping-off point for Chelsea defenders – and that’s before we even consider the injury to James.

A late, late Danny Welbeck (£5.9m) header ruined a clean sheet for the Blues but had they held on for a shut-out it would have been wholly undeserved, with Brighton the better team for large periods and registering 18 shots to their hosts’ 11. The fact that Edouard Mendy (£6.2m) was on course for maximum bonus points before Welbeck’s leveller said much about the course of the game and Chelsea’s patchy form at the back.

“Our players are injured. I told you what would happen weeks ago. Same thoughts, I told you. Sure we are tired, if you had been in bed for 10 days and played Premier League matches after that, you would be tired.” – Thomas Tuchel

It’s now just one clean sheet in eight league matches for Tuchel’s weary-looking side and the upcoming fixtures, plus a couple of medium-term blanks, will make the likes of Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) an easy sell in early 2022.

One thing to mention is that the Blues could well end up getting a Double Gameweek 22 but, with one of a potential two fixtures being away at the Etihad, there is limited appeal.

PREMIUM DIFFERENTIALS HIT FORM… BUT AT THE WRONG TIME?

The James injury latest as Chelsea get set for FPL exodus 2

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) have low ownerships among ‘active’ FPL managers: in the top 10,000, for instance, they are selected by 0.5% and 2.2% respectively.

The pair had unremarkable autumns, struggling to recapture former glories, but have caught the eye recently, with Lukaku looking sharp on his return from Covid-19 and De Bruyne now starting to purr.

“Surprised what he’s doing. Actually very surprised, but I don’t know how long he can do it. We will try it and then we will see because nobody knows. I’m surprised because he was six weeks, eight weeks out, then when was trying to come back caught Covid and after that one training and let’s go. This is what we do at the moment.” – Thomas Tuchel on Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku nodded in Chelsea’s only goal of the match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, while De Bruyne – described as “exceptional” by his manager after full-time – produced a superb assist for Phil Foden’s (£8.1m) match-winner across west London and would have had a second attacking return to his name had Aymeric Laporte (£5.6m) not strayed fractionally offside when nodding home the Belgian’s free-kick.

Such a return to form would ordinarily see them re-enter the premium radar but their purple patches perhaps come at an inopportune time, FPL wise.

Chelsea’s aforementioned run of tricky games and blanks count against Lukaku, while City are the only Premier League club who haven’t had a match postponed so far this season and so won’t ‘double’ in Gameweeks 21 or 22. The champions elect play Arsenal and Chelsea in those two Gameweeks.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE XG

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 1

Foden and Jack Grealish (£7.6m) were brought back out of detention for a start at Brentford and had contrasting evenings. Foden excelled out wide and then as a false nine, earning Guardiola’s praise after the match, but Grealish had another poor evening and did little to suggest he’ll keep his place on New Year’s Day.

Bernardo Silva (£7.6m), meanwhile, blanked for the fourth straight Gameweek. His expected goals (xG) ‘overachievement’ in the autumn was well discussed in FPL circles and, unsurprisingly, there has been some regression to the mean in the last fortnight. The Portugal international didn’t have a single shot for the second successive match and has had only two efforts in total during his recent four-game drought.

This midfield trio, and the rest of City’s starting XI, lasted 90 minutes at Brentford, so with little more than 60 hours separating their Gameweek 20 and 21 fixtures, Guardiola may well be calling on the benched and unused Raheem Sterling (£8.7m) and Riyad Mahrez (£10.7m) at the Emirates in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

1st time this season I’ve made an early transfer for -4, probably mad to right enough.

If Foden isn’t to play, worth taking another -4 to get Maddison in? Wish I got Maddison for this GW instead of Son tbh.

Careful with Iheanacho; if the Leicester DGW21 goes ahead, you would only have him for the Norwich match, and get 0 for the Everton match because he would have already left by then (3rd Jan is the date they must leave by).

Not sure if this is widely known but,
Apparently and from what I've read the Everton v Newcastle game was postponed due to Manquillo's 95th-minute YC against Man United.
As this took them below the threshold of 13 players (+1 GK).

An absolute farce. Southampton last season had games with 11 'senior players' in the matchday squad due to an injury crisis.
... So this season all you need is the 1 Covid case, on top of an injury & suspension(s) list that falls below '13 +1'?

    1. Ray85
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

Yep, plenty of clubs manipulating the situation. Once Wilson and ASM got injured they were always looking for a way out..
rescheduled games probably when they'll have some new faces too.

        • 6 Years

        Exactly.
I'm sure these clubs too would be in favour of letting Manquillo play and letting him serve his suspension at a later day, not that that is a possibility.

        • 6 Years

        "Don't mind it"?
If a team falls below 13+1 with no Covid cases, you know what follows. That's just not sporting integrity.

The rule should solely be on a covid cases number; injuries/suspensions should have no effect whatsoever, that's the issue.

I hope the league would cancel a teams game before they reach enough cases to decimate a team to that number solely through covid. The rule applies the same to every team. It's not like clubs are going out there fabricating covid tests and telling their players get injured...

Leeds played like 3 games with half their team being from youth squads and didnt complain about it. Then they got covid cases and their games got cancelled.

      2. Ray85
        • 6 Years
        2 years, 3 months ago

But if they had a flu/illness they'd be expected to fulfil the fixtures and bring in youth players? Also, for clubs like Wolves who only registered a 21 man squad they have even more chance of getting games called off. Not a massive deal but will cause fixture congestion late and crap for the fans when the games are called off so late.

a flu isnt a global pandemic.

Im not saying its the best solution, but clearly operating a sports league during covid will be hard and theyre doing this on the fly. Its either setting rules like this and draw a line somewhere or pause the league. Clearly they're too greedy to pause the league so this is the next best thing

"either setting rules like this" or league voided...?
The specifics of the rule they have chosen are so far wide of the mark.
            This is the point.

And many PL clubs are irate.

You are clearly arguing something else here.
I agree. A protocol should be in place to protect teams that have been hit by Covid, yes.

That is not the post of this thread.

And also teams won't want to be giving opportunities to young players who haven't played senior football before because it will add to their 13+1 quota.
Although this is the time, with potentially depleted squads when these academy prospects could be getting their chance.

I believe Norwich did it on the weekend.
It doesn't make any sense why you would especially when you are 3-0 down but not a lot at that club does.

I guess my question is “why does this bother you?”

If it’s FPL then obviously who cares.

If it’s a competitive balance issue - how is it better forcing teams to play with depleted squads? Whatever the cause of those absences?

agree with this. The rule applies to everyone. Doubt newcastle told Callum Wilson to go out there and go get injured with an injury that will take months to recover from

Fair enough. I guess for fans the late cancellations are difficult to take especially when some clubs are taking the mick. It's a difficult situation for everyone involved so hopefully we'll be out of it soon.

PL clearly dont care about the fans. All they care about is tv money and making sure the games goes on. The fact they cancelled Villa game like 2 hours before was crazy

No, this is not FPL related question.

The problem I have, put concisely, is that all it takes to get a game postponed is one covid case.

Teams every other year have had to play with depleted squads should they have an injury crisis + any suspensions. There was zero advantage to this. However, now and particularly in Newcastle's case who are going to spend big in January having 'x' amount of injuries/suspensions is now all of a sudden somewhat advantageous.

Yeah make sense to avoid benching headache, especially if you want to spend more in midfield or forward. However in COVID times I think we need very strong backup instead of fodder or fillers, hence I wouldn't mind benching my Tierney, or Regs if I get him. But yeah bavies is good call and Wolves defence like Coady saiss and RAN are great pick ups too

Most likely a coding issue was what I heard.
The game isn’t designed/coded to reset teams 3 weeks (which you’d have to for consecutive FHs)

      eg - FH 35 & 36 in 37 you’d get your team from 34.

Easier to just not let people do it than rewrite the program.

A FH chip will not be a FH by definition if it doesn't revert back to the previous GW players.

    5. Ragabolly
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

I honestly believe the reason is purely technical, as it can cause a bit of programming hassle keeping track of when to restore your team back to its original form if you use FHs back to back. Keeping at least one GW between FHs ensures that their code of automatically reverting your squad back the GW after FH doesn't cause any glitches and doesn't require much change in their codebase at all. That's the only reason I can see for the rule.

I like the fact it reverts as it makes the game harder and should reward good planners.

Yes, but it's not even needed

Fans don't matter to EPL this season. TV money is unreal since the Before Times ended

I'm quite convinced some fixtures will be announced 10 (or fewer) days before, rather than the usual threshold of 15, and they'll claim "unprecedented times" with a recycled apology quote, like the postponement announcements

I do have a BeNcHiNg HeAdAcHe - with likely 8 doublers if Crellin is correct - and some good single week options. Could look silly if the doubles don’t eventuate and I’m benching Jota, Bowen etc

I was before, but it doesn't look ideal with double City and Watkins... And then there's the chance of one or more players missing both games with Covid (personal or entire team), so I'm on this instead:

        Dalot Targett Cancelo
        Son Maddison/Raphinha Bowen Foden
        Watkins DCL Antonio

        Bachmann TAA Coufal Jota

Madders or Watkins (C) for GW21, depending on Maddison's fitness (hence Raphinha backup). Targett to Robbo in DGW22, with TC TAA, Watkins and double City on the bench

Son to Saka/Raphinha in GW23 (depending on if I have Madders or Raph already), Jota to Salah for GW24

Not over those three guys, no

And I'm very wary of getting an unimpressive asset just because of DGWs. I won't do it this season or in future. Stung too many times in the past

If he's not the kind of player I'd trust long-term, I wouldn't get him for the doubles on a WC. This is why I'm not considering Burnley... And I've drifted away from Ronaldo, even though I can afford him

Also, Watford without Dennis (AFCON after Spurs game) is a very, very different attack. King is atrocious at finishing this season, or at least recently

Everton simply can't afford to, and he's a long-term pick: losing him by GW27

Not expecting much for GW21 from him, but I don't want to spend a hit on him by GW22, where I expect him to start at least the Norwich game

I can get to something pretty close to this team with 2 -8s over the next 2 weeks. I think that is what I'll do rather than blow my WC as should be worth more than 16pts
