The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders

We round up the main Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Wednesday’s two Gameweek 20 fixtures, with the results of both matches further consolidating Manchester City’s position at the top of the Premier League table.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

KEY FPL TALKING POINTS

JAMES INJURY

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 2

Reece James (£6.4m) didn’t even last half an hour of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Brighton, with FPL’s third-most-owned defender barely able to walk off the field when being withdrawn with a muscle problem and later sighted on crutches.

A still-seething Thomas Tuchel was taciturn in his post-match interview and offered very little on his wing-back but the fact that it’s a muscle injury suggests that his involvement against Liverpool is in serious doubt.

“No prognosis. Hamstring injury.” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James

Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) was also withdrawn at the interval with a back injury, while Tuchel revealed in his post-match press conference that Timo Werner (£8.6m) wasn’t even back in training yet after his recent Covid diagnosis.

“It’s too early but it looks not good.” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James and Andreas Christensen

Brighton boss Graham Potter meanwhile offered an update on Leandro Trossard (£6.2m), who missed out on Wednesday night.

“Hopefully he’s back at the weekend. We’ll hopefully get one or two players back.” – Graham Potter on Leandro Trossard

CHELSEA DEFENCE SIGNS OFF WITH A WHIMPER

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 3

For a lot of Fantasy managers, Gameweek 21 will be a jumping-off point for Chelsea defenders – and that’s before we even consider the injury to James.

A late, late Danny Welbeck (£5.9m) header ruined a clean sheet for the Blues but had they held on for a shut-out it would have been wholly undeserved, with Brighton the better team for large periods and registering 18 shots to their hosts’ 11. The fact that Edouard Mendy (£6.2m) was on course for maximum bonus points before Welbeck’s leveller said much about the course of the game and Chelsea’s patchy form at the back.

“Our players are injured. I told you what would happen weeks ago. Same thoughts, I told you. Sure we are tired, if you had been in bed for 10 days and played Premier League matches after that, you would be tired.” – Thomas Tuchel

It’s now just one clean sheet in eight league matches for Tuchel’s weary-looking side and the upcoming fixtures, plus a couple of medium-term blanks, will make the likes of Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) an easy sell in early 2022.

One thing to mention is that the Blues could well end up getting a Double Gameweek 22 but, with one of a potential two fixtures being away at the Etihad, there is limited appeal.

PREMIUM DIFFERENTIALS HIT FORM… BUT AT THE WRONG TIME?

The James injury latest as Chelsea get set for FPL exodus 2

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) have low ownerships among ‘active’ FPL managers: in the top 10,000, for instance, they are selected by 0.5% and 2.2% respectively.

The pair had unremarkable autumns, struggling to recapture former glories, but have caught the eye recently, with Lukaku looking sharp on his return from Covid-19 and De Bruyne now starting to purr.

“Surprised what he’s doing. Actually very surprised, but I don’t know how long he can do it. We will try it and then we will see because nobody knows. I’m surprised because he was six weeks, eight weeks out, then when was trying to come back caught Covid and after that one training and let’s go. This is what we do at the moment.” – Thomas Tuchel on Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku nodded in Chelsea’s only goal of the match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, while De Bruyne – described as “exceptional” by his manager after full-time – produced a superb assist for Phil Foden’s (£8.1m) match-winner across west London and would have had a second attacking return to his name had Aymeric Laporte (£5.6m) not strayed fractionally offside when nodding home the Belgian’s free-kick.

Such a return to form would ordinarily see them re-enter the premium radar but their purple patches perhaps come at an inopportune time, FPL wise.

Chelsea’s aforementioned run of tricky games and blanks count against Lukaku, while City are the only Premier League club who haven’t had a match postponed so far this season and so won’t ‘double’ in Gameweeks 21 or 22. The champions elect play Arsenal and Chelsea in those two Gameweeks.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE XG

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 1

Foden and Jack Grealish (£7.6m) were brought back out of detention for a start at Brentford and had contrasting evenings. Foden excelled out wide and then as a false nine, earning Guardiola’s praise after the match, but Grealish had another poor evening and did little to suggest he’ll keep his place on New Year’s Day.

Bernardo Silva (£7.6m), meanwhile, blanked for the fourth straight Gameweek. His expected goals (xG) ‘overachievement’ in the autumn was well discussed in FPL circles and, unsurprisingly, there has been some regression to the mean in the last fortnight. The Portugal international didn’t have a single shot for the second successive match and has had only two efforts in total during his recent four-game drought.

This midfield trio, and the rest of City’s starting XI, lasted 90 minutes at Brentford, so with little more than 60 hours separating their Gameweek 20 and 21 fixtures, Guardiola may well be calling on the benched and unused Raheem Sterling (£8.7m) and Riyad Mahrez (£10.7m) at the Emirates in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

Wherever the next 2 GW's takes us, I am seriously only considering a -4 to make to transfers anyway. There is so much uncertainty; imagine FH'ing and half of your squad goes down with COVID. Such a waste. Would prefer to FH later on when things have settled and we can plan better

I’m with you on this. I’m going to take a -8 to do CR7 to Kane this week (annoyingly picked Scarlett as my non playing bench fodder at start of season and already have Son and Reg) and that double hit should in theory leave me with 3 players on DGW’s for GW21 and 9 for GW22. Would use my FT then for GW22 to bring another DGW player that I can see using in the medium/long term. If there aren’t too many covid cancellations for GW22 I’d use BB then and save 2 FH’s, WC and TC for when things calm down

Likely a few gw21 and most but not Man City gw22.

I get the logic, but you're getting rid of a premium asset who could have a double double for another who is likely to double in GW24, but has two tough games against Chelsea in the EFL Cup to navigate first. If United, and Ronaldo, are still crap after GW21 I might make that move, but not before.

The problem with the United double DGW is that it's still only 40-60% likely to happen per Ben Crellin, so feels a bit risky imo. I'd also worry about Ronaldo starting the second potential GW21 game should United put in another anonymous performance like they did vs Newcastle. That said the EFL double vs Chelsea is food for thought and the decision may not be as clear cut as it was earlier on this morning. Cheers Lord!

FH22 looking better and two weeks to plan (whether that’s good is a different discussion)

Wildcard right now is very risky

I am so twixed and between. We all have the issue of Pool Chelsea Citeh Arsenal players against each other so Free Hitters can steal a march on us. The cancelations and injuries I must deal with are small with RJames and Livra and Broja expected cancelation. If I use the FH I will probably be forced to use the WC chip the week after.

I think FH is the perfect chip for the uncertainty.

Obviously it takes the fun away from those players who want to plan meticulously for the perfect 15 dgw. Which rarely pays off totally.

I think the pragmatic players and FH into dgw22 fits well, any strategy is dependent on players performance in that game week anyhow and often the rub of the green or VAR decides.

Very true. I have only fully benefitted from a DGW a few years ago; I think I pulled a 140 out of the bag or something similar. One things for sure, whichever way we turn there will be tears!!!!

          That's half the fun.

Someone said recently that FPL makes for a lot of disappointment. Its built in.

That's true if you obsess about each decision and every single outcome. Got to step back sometimes and ride the waves and persevere too.

      Ramsgate (Sanchez)
      TAA, James, Reg, Cancelo (Liv)
      Bowen, Salah, Sterling, Gallagher (ESR)
      Watkins, Broja (King)

      2FT and 2.9 ITB

Couple of questions with this lineup

      A. 1FT this week of either James > Cash/Targett or Gallagher > Maddison saving an extra FT for a potential DGW in GW22

      B. 2 FTs this week of James > Cash/Targett or Gallagher > Maddison

Also welcome your thoughts for a reliable inroad into City's midfield - Sterling, De Bruyne or Foden?

FH22 and make a couple of transfers for players you want in both 21 and 23 (after FH reverts back to previous team)

-4 or -8 for players not playing could work out
      Laca to Watkins
      Salah to Son
      James to anyone-Reg Cash Coady
      Mbuemo to Maddison (if fit)
Tsimikas will need to be moved on from 23 as well

The reason I’m selling Salah is I expect Son to double/triple rise in price between 21/22 whilst Salah drops once or twice. And if FH22 (like me) you don’t get that value in your team

        Plus Spurs face porous Watford

Our beautiful friend, hindsight says the right time to sell was gw19 to maximize the replacement points.

Are you considering benching him to avoid having to buy him back?

I was going to do that but with potential double and if fixtures land favorable the upside is there to sell and bring back later. Egypt could get to final and it’s an extra week carrying him

I just went through gameweeks history and list of captains. December was insanely good to me.

    15 - Salah
    6 - Salah
    9 - Ronaldo
    8 - Salah
    18 - Cancelo
    8 - Son
    6 - Kane

Going a whole month without a captain blank is astonishing, especially when you have 7 opportunities to screw it up.

Not a brag, but my captain hasn't blanked since GW9. I went Havertz over Salah that gameweek when Salah got 24 points & Havertz got 3 Still bites me!

Well hello there, I've done it as well. I'm blank-less only since GW13 so fair play to you!
Havertz 3 and Aubameyang -1 were the dark days.

Can't wait for the game tonight.

Ronaldo (c) kind of determines my GW as I'm sitting right on the Top 10k average.

A brace or better and I will fly up the rankings!

Been in this situation a few times though this season and my late captain has always disappointed

I’m a Salah owner, I haven’t slept for two nights, so unfair, it was written he would trash Leicester defence, those non-owners are soo lucky.

I think Salah owners should get an extra FH to make it even!!

If Villa and Burnley are the only ones to get a DGW next week would you captain one of their players or just stick with someone like Son?

    1. Bucket Man
      • 5 Years

Son as I'd only have a defender from one of those. Watkins could be tempting if you have him though.

Who's more of a priority to get in for the next GW? (Providing Maddy is fit) going to be part of a -4 with shifting James out, and Bilva/ESR out for one of the below.

    1. Bowen
    2. Maddison

I'd go Bowen with better fixtures. Even if Maddison doubles I will get him but i'm worried he will get a rest in potentially the Norwich game. Bowen just plays and plays.

If you take Ben's probability analysis, the main outcome for dgw21 is that Burnley double up against Leeds and Villa, both away.

Who's stocking up on the Burnley squad this week?

Most will sort James out and whatever happens tonight to consider too.

Or Leeds v Villa could be a double.

The integrity of the league suggests its Burnley as playing less games is detrimental to a league campaign and the psychology of survival in the Premier League.

Anyone doubling or tripling up on Burnley players?

those getting rid of Chelsea defenders is no one else looking at lamptey? looks great and the fixtures are strong, they have a good defence and should have a double in 22 as well, he looks just as good of an option as bavies or cash or is there something I'm missing there?
