Southampton v Newcastle postponed as second Gameweek 21 fixture falls

Southampton v Newcastle United has become the second Gameweek 21 fixture to be postponed.

The game has been called off due to a lack of numbers in the Magpies’ squad and follows the earlier announcement that Leicester City v Norwich City wouldn’t go ahead on New Year’s Day.

A Premier League statement said:

 “Southampton FC’s match against Newcastle United at St Mary’s Stadium, due to be played at 2pm on Sunday 2 January, has regrettably been postponed.

“Newcastle United continue to have ongoing COVID-19 cases and injuries that led to their match against Everton FC being called off earlier this week. The Board accepted the postponement application as the club does not have the required number of players available for the match (13 outfield players and one goalkeeper).

“The Board was able to make its decision in advance of the fixture to give clarity to the affected clubs and their fans. We apologise for the inconvenience and disruption caused to supporters’ festive plans.”

        Was thinking if fixtures announced after GW21 deadline and then the Gameweek 22 deadline brought forward it could happen but highly unlikely they rearrange fixtures with only a few days notice now.

    This may have already been discussed/argued on here but the PL realy need to look at the rules for postponments & exclude non-covid absentees. Teams with just 2/3 player covid cases shouldn't be getting there matches postponed!

    Not picking on Newcastle before toon fans have a go at me!!
    but if those 3 with covid were either suspended/injured Newcastle would have to select under 23s or academy players & give them a debut, so why can't teams do that now?

    It's benefiting teams getting matches called off & played when injured players have recovered

      I agree with your point but equally as a neutral I would want the strongest 11 vs the strongest 11.

      The advantage is only there because of circumstance anyway.

      I wouldn't want to see teams playing youth sides that get battered by mid table Premier league teams. That for me harms the integrity of the Premier League. I do see both sides of the coin though

        Fair point but fixtures are golden, Rafa will look for defensive reinforcement in January and with many DGWd to come, Keane may nick a cheeky goal like he always do.

        I think Gray and Townsend (if fit) will benefit from DCL return massively
