Bowen hauls, Reguilon AWOL again and Blank Gameweek 27 takes shape: FPL notes

We look at the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) takeaways from not just West Ham United’s win over Norwich City but also the EFL Cup semi-final second leg between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in our latest Scout Notes.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

BOWEN HITS A CENTURY AS ANTONIO TOILS

Jarrod Bowen (£6.7m) passed a century of FPL points in spectacular fashion on Wednesday, delivering his biggest-ever FPL haul in a single match and rounding off Double Gameweek 21 with 21 points.

Bowen was widely captained in the Gameweek just gone, with his effective ownership in excess of 100% in each tier in the top 300k, and those handing the armband to Michail Antonio (£7.9m) over the midfielder had a chastening evening as the striker blanked and Bowen scored twice.

The winger also struck the woodwork on two occasions and had a goal chalked off for offside at the London Stadium, bossing the underlying stats yet again:

Bowen has outscored Antonio by 109 points to 54 from Gameweek 4 onwards, and beats him for pretty much every attacking metric when we compare the two over that period:

A BAD DAY FOR B. JOHNSON

Another budget defender bites the dust, for now at least.

Ben Johnson (£4.0m) ended Double Gameweek 21 with zero points and didn’t even get on the field against Norwich, with Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) and Aaron Cresswell (£5.3m) returning from absences of varying lengths to reclaim their full-back spots.

Coufal supplied the assist for Bowen’s first goal but Cresswell really caught the eye in some very advanced positions, registering 47 final-third touches compared to Coufal’s 21, Bowen’s 26 and Antonio’s 18.

MOYES ON SOUCEK’S ABSENCE

The double-digit hero of the first half of West Ham’s Double Gameweek 21, Manuel Lanzini (£5.8m), didn’t get much of an opportunity to add to his brace at Crystal Palace as he was fielded in a deeper role alongside Declan Rice (£5.1m) against Norwich.

That was because Tomas Soucek (£5.7m) was absent, along with Mark Noble (£4.4m), with David Moyes hinting that the Czech Republic international was the latest Hammer to test positive for coronavirus:

“We hope it is quick but there are a lot of different things going around at the moment. So we’re hoping that Tomas is in good health. He’s been a great player for us. We will miss him when we don’t have him. But as I said many times there is COVID at lots of clubs, so everybody has to deal with it.” – David Moyes

OPERATION: TARGET NORWICH

The initial ‘bounce’ that Dean Smith brought to Carrow Road has given way to six straight league defeats by a combined score of 16-0.

Anyone who backed Everton assets ahead of their curtailed Double Gameweek 21 may find some consolation in the fact that it’s the toothless and porous Canaries up next.

It’s worth looking a bit further ahead at Norwich’s fixtures as they’re once again becoming a bit of a whipping boy to target, with Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m) enjoying a home match against Smith’s troops after his ‘double’ and then Manchester City and Liverpool lying in wait a bit further down the line.

BLANK GAMEWEEK 27 TAKES SHAPE

As West Ham’s routine win over Norwich was taking place, Chelsea were booking their place in the EFL Cup final with a 3-0 aggregate semi-final win over Tottenham Hotspur.

That final clashes with Gameweek 27, so Chelsea v Leicester City follows Arsenal v Liverpool in needing to be rescheduled.

Eliminations from the FA Cup by the fifth-round stage would allow for these fixtures (or any other outstanding matches) to be moved to the midweek after Gameweek 27 but, given that Chelsea host Plymouth Argyle in round four of the competition, that looks unlikely for Thomas Tuchel’s troops.

The Blues now look set to blank in Gameweeks 24, 25 and 27 as a consequence.

FPL Blank and Double Gameweeks: What we know so far 3

WHERE’S REGUILON?

Absent from the Spurs line-up for the third cup match in a row was Sergio Reguilon (£5.4m), who now hasn’t featured for the Lilywhites since New Year’s Day and who has been missing from the matchday squad in the last two fixtures.

There was no word from Antonio Conte after full-time on the Spaniard’s whereabouts and the last we heard from the Spurs boss on the wing-back was this update after Sunday’s win over Morecambe:

“About Sergio Reguilon, he was a bit tired, and we preferred to keep him out of the game.” – Antonio Conte

LUCAS ‘OOP’

In Son Heung-min‘s (£10.7m) absence, Conte turned to Double Gameweek 22 differential Lucas Moura (£6.5m) to partner Harry Kane (£12.2m) in a 3-5-2.

Lucas managed only one shot to Kane’s five, however, and was part of a Spurs side that were again outclassed when coming up against elite opposition.

Leicester and Arsenal might not be quite at Chelsea’s level but they’ll pose more of a test than the vast majority of the Lilywhites’ Gameweeks 11-21 opponents, so there’s growing trepidation about lumping on Spurs players for the upcoming double.

“I think that in this moment we can’t compare the two situations, the Chelsea situation and the Tottenham situation. I think it’s not fair to compare the two situations, because it’s impossible to compare.” – Antonio Conte

CHELSEA IN A BACK FOUR AGAIN

Slightly concerning for owners of Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) was Thomas Tuchel’s adoption of a back four for the second time in a week and Malang Sarr‘s (£4.9m) deployment at left-back over the benched Spaniard.

Successive breathers in the domestic cups may serve as a boost to Alonso’s game-time prospects in Double Gameweek 22 but it’s worth mentioning that Sarr was excellent at left-back against Spurs and, if Tuchel replicates the tactics in the coming week, he is a more defensive-minded option for the daunting trip to the Etihad especially on Saturday.

“If it makes sense and we think it makes sense we can see it again. We have played it now twice and in both games we were very committed to the structure and very disciplined.” – Thomas Tuchel on the move to a 4-2-2-2

Which 2 defenders would you bench (keeping in mind it has to be unlikely that Dalot or Reguilon will play both games in double)

    A TAA
    B Cancelo
    C Reguilon
    D Dawson
    E Dalot

BD - You can remove TAA (play) and Dawson (bench) out the equation. I think you have to take a chance on the doublers so Cancelo as the 2nd def to bench.

Still got 2FH. Looking back free hit in gw18 would have been the week as I had an awful week and would have doubled my score. However feels not the best week to use this week and may as well hang on to it?

    Salah | Foden | Son | Bowen
    Antonio | Toney

    I am thinking
    Son -> Mount
    Salah -> Maddison (or Tielemans)

I am prepared for another transfer for a -8 hit. But think a -4 is fine for this week?

Am I mad to consider a Cash-Digne double-up? I have Cash currently and would like a Villa attacker for next week onwards but it might be a bit hard to stretch to one if I'm to keep in mind other possibilities (like bringing in KDB while keeping Salah). I'd love Watkins but even with him I'm not so sure if his role will change with Ings fit and Coutinho joining now, Coutinho may be worth a punt as he tends to start well but hard to know how many minutes he'll get early on. I do like the idea of Buendia, hasn't picked up too many points but he's passing the eye-test of late. But Digne would give me another fairly attacking Villain while meaning I don't have to make the above choice, and as I'll need to get rid of Alonso it would be a single move rather than me needing to downgrade Alonso to then afford one of the other options.

Are you sure Digne will oust Targett instantly?

        • 10 Years

no is what I'm thinking, it would be harsh on Targett, and Digne hasn't played much

No, but at the same time it's not like he's not used to the league or is unfit, and Gerrard has said improving the defence is one of his priorities, I'd be surprised if it takes long for him to oust Targett

I wouldn't double up. Just the fact you have Cash is nice enough.

TAA Cancelo Cash Davies Kilman or some variation of that defense is quite good imo.

Not really a fan of it tbh. Those fixtures look better for an attacking double up (Watkins & Buendia/Coutinho) rather than a defensive one

Team looks dicey, this week. But decent for next. Considering using one of my FHs

    Sánchez
    TAA, Cancelo, Reguillon, Dalot
    Jota, Foden, Bowen
    Antonio, Dennis, Watkins
(Ramsdale, Son, ESR, Liv) 4.8 1FT

    Possible FH team:
    DDG
    TAA, Rudi, Cucurella
    Jota, Mount, Moira, Maddison
    Ron, Kane (c), Dennis
    (Sánchez, Jorginho, Sánchez, Tsimi)

    a) FH
    b) Son > Maddison
    c) Son, Antonio > Maddi, Kane/Ron (-4)

I think at the moment people EXPECT Bowen to score or get an assist while they HOPE Antonio can get a return. That says it all. Antonio out to King or Dennis with a tasty double against porous defences plus Norwich in gw23 seems sensible even if it is short term. People will say Antonio has a great fixture against Leeds but he had a great fixture last night, too..
        Thoughts?

Antonio to Watford FWD is an easy move imo.

I think it’s a no brainer unless like me you already have 1 of them

Not sure I want the king Dennis double up although it does look good

If he didnt had Leeds, Watford, Leicester and Newcastle in next 5, I would be tempted to get Watford forwards.

For just next 2 weeks, Watford forwards can outscore him.

Yes, it wouldn't necessarily be any kind of long term move - just trying to play the next few fixtures as best I can with a free transfer.

Yes Bowen was the man last might, but Leeds could be another story. Eye test says Bowen, stats says Bowen but from what i have seen Antonio will get points Vs Leeds and up coming fixtures which btw is against 2, 3, 4 and fifth bad defence atm. Antonio created a very good chance from nothing, i noticed he was often in very good positions but bad decisions from team mates let him down and a couple of situations where he was in good positions but ball were not coming. Keep for me, Watford strikers with those injuries and absentees elsewhere is the double and Norwich but then you will want to get rid. And King is not a good Long term fantasy pick. He got a lot of quality and difficult to defend against but beside a freak season he never gets much goals and assists. Pens but they will need to get to the pen area for that and not likely to visit that very often with the current Watford team.

I would agree if it weren't for the fact the fixtures are so damn nice for Watford. They literally play the 3 worst teams back to back to back.

I'm talking about next 3 fixtures for Watford versus next 2 for Hammers. Antonio 2 goals and 2 assists last 12 matches. Doing nothing to make me think moving him out is going to backfire horrendously.

Watford are aning the third worst teams so that is my rationale, West ham are fourth to six best and plays 2, 3, 4 and fifth worst defence Watford are them selves among those bad teams, and away games in two, which they will be dominated by Newcastle and Burnley. But for the record, i plan to have both Antonio and Dennis, so not a big issue but my reply was in rrgard to having two watford strikers over Antonio and for mr that is stupid as you must reckon also for how bad Watford are, not just the opposition, and it turns ugly after Norwich.

Son to Maddison or Foden with FT

Is Antonio to Dennis worth a hit? I'm not keen on premium FWDs.

Sort of depends on other transfer plans. Much prefer Maddison for 22 if you can still get Foden for 23-5

            GW 22 final decisions:

Who for third defender? Have Rudiger & TAA
            A Lamptey
            B Emerson
            C Tarkow or Lowton

            + mids:

            D Bowen
            or
            E Moura

Some real headaches again this week for most players it seems - i'm leaning towards playing FH but that then leaves me with questions on who to play and who to bench!

Current team is struggling and i can't see a way to avoid losing more ground this weekend by just using my 1FT or even taking a -8...

            Ederson
            TAA James Cash White Johnson
            Foden Mount Bowen Son ESR
            Firmino Antonio Toney

            Sufferered from some dubious puts in recent weeks on Toney & Firmino which haven't worked, so there's work to be done to sort that long term, this weekend though i'm looking at going;

            DDG Gunnarson
            Lowton Cucarella Thomas //Sessegnon Tsimikas
            Maddison Fernandes Lookman Jota Bowen
            Ronaldo Kane King

Still with 0.4m to switch something around and undecided on how to line up, with the exception being defence which i think is just a case of going for the 3DG

For me it's Lookman on a DG or Jota/Bowen - i fancy Lookman as a differential with Vardy & Ieanacho missing but know i'll get burnt leaving out Jota or Bowen.

Head is being well and truly scratched, the only certain (i think) is FH is the only option this weekend.

The problem with FH is that your team is gonna still look bad next week.

              Have you thought about WC?

oh yeah definitely, a WC isn't out of the question.

The thought this week is if i can get enough points from a decent FH, i can start to afford to take small hits on my transfers and right some of the wrongs in my team.

I've avoided using any chips throughout the covid issues to hopefully take advantage on the other side but it's not working out too well now.

There are still some players in my current team that i'm reasonably happy with

This will be a long 36 hours figuring out what to do

I think that team has a lot of problems tbh.

Ederson, James, Johnson, Son, Mount, ESR, Firmino, Toney are all players I'd want rid of.

Of those players, only Son might be able to come back and be a decent pick .The value of the FH is buying you time for your players to come back next week. I'd just WC now, fix all the problems, have a plan for Salah and try to forge ahead.

my only worry with a wildcard is that there's still the potential for postponements and not all DGWs are known at this point and it feels like i'm setting up a team with the chances of it needing another rebuild in the not too distant future.

Although (touch wood) the postponements look to be slowing down now and hopefully we're through the worst of it all.

              Ramsdale, ESR, Livra, Son

Only two DGWs (Sanchez and Reg) - should I use Free Hit or take a hit or two?
