Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford

Liverpool cruised to a 3-0 win over Brentford in Double Gameweek 22, thanks to goals from Fabinho (£5.4m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£5.8m) and Takumi Minamino (£5.1m).

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

LIVERPOOL FIND A WAY WITHOUT SALAH AND MANE

At least one of Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) or Sadio Mane (£11.7m) has played in all 172 of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures since the Egyptian joined the club in the summer of 2017.

However, against Brentford on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp had to make-do without both of his star forwards due to their involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and in their absence, turned to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£5.8m), who featured on the right of the Reds’ front three.

Above: Liverpool’s average position map v Brentford in Double Gameweek 22, featuring no. 15 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Despite being without Salah and Mane, Liverpool’s squad stepped up, as six different players scored or assisted, including full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m).

Notably, the latter is averaging over 7.5 points per match over his last seven starts, producing a goal, five assists and 10 bonus points, which suggests he can rival Jota for the third Reds’ spot in our FPL squads even once everyone is back.

However, it was a day to forget for Diojo Jota’s (£8.4m) owners, as the Portuguese was hooked after 82 minutes to avoid injury and produced just three FPL points, despite hitting the post and racking up six shots in the box.

Discussing his missing stars – plus Oxlade-Chamberlain who was taken off injured in the second-half – Jurgen Klopp said:

“It’s completely normal. We knew it would happen when the boys went away. It’s really helpful the result today to calm these discussions down a little bit. You’re right, I understand the thoughts behind it but they are not here so we don’t talk about the boys who are not in. We find ways to break the opponents down. We wish the boys in Africa the best of luck. We were celebrating when Mo (Salah) scored last night and Sadio (Mane) the other day. We wish all of them to win the tournament which unfortunately isn’t impossible.” – Jurgen Klopp on coping without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane

“He was really good, but that’s a shadow on the game (and) we don’t know yet. He rolled his ankle and now we hope it’s nothing serious but we will get the further – or final – information (at the) earliest tomorrow, that’s how it is (with) these situations. It’s absolutely too early (to say), I have no idea. I don’t know.” – Jurgen Klopp on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

MORE AWAY DAY WOES FOR BRENTFORD

Following today’s 3-0 defeat at Anfield, Brentford have now conceded 19 goals in their last seven away matches, whilst across the season, only Norwich City, Southampton and Leeds United have allowed more than their 21.

BRENTFORD’S AWAY FORM:
OpponentScorexGC
Liverpool0-33.19
Southampton1-41.43
Brighton and Hove Albion0-21.01
Leeds United2-21.19
Tottenham Hotspur2-22.24
Newcastle United3-31.76
Burnley1-32.51

That could be good news for Manchester City, who host Brentford in Gameweek 24, with Pep Guardiola’s attacking assets attractive captaincy options that week.

Even more so if Egypt reach the latter stages of AFCON, with the final and third-place play-off taking place on February 6th, just four days before Liverpool are due to entertain Leicester City, which would surely cast Salah’s involvement into doubt.

“We were unbelievable in the first half against one of the best teams in the world. We kept them quiet. If we had gone to half time 0-0 it would have been a different story, but if we want to get points here we can’t concede from set pieces.

We had the chance with Bryan Mbuemo and then they came down the other end – fantastic cross, fantastic finish – and that killed the game.

Until the second goal, it showed if we keep our discipline, keep pressing, defend well in the low block, we can match some of the best.

This is a big occasion, playing in one of the most iconic places in the world, but you have to enjoy it for 30 seconds before the game is on and then you only really enjoy it if you win.” – Thomas Frank

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Jones, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Minamino 74), Jota (Gordon 82), Firmino (Milner 78)

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock, Roerslev, Baptiste (Wissa 68), Norgaard, Janelt, Henry (Canos 49), Mbeumo (Jensen 75), Toney

Fernandes gets 2 goals from 2 shots and 0.35 xG and Ronaldo not even in the squad. You just gotta laugh.

I’m pleased for his owners but some of the talk of self congratulatory genius is a bit laughable. They took a punt and got very lucky. The end.

Those who took Bruno, knew Ronaldo would either be on bench or out first game

Congrats to Bruno owners and captainers, but I am sorry there is know way they "knew" Ronaldo was going to be out. Ralf said probably fine.

They rolled the dice and got lucky he was lying/new injury. Bad interpretation and/or taking a chance led to a fortunate result.

"knew" is impossible, but guessed right from the info available? Yes. Even if he was totally fit we'd all wonder whether he would start 2 in a row, with the injury and then the report about another injury I was happy to lump on Bruno thinking Ronaldo won't start both even if he has recovered

Ralf's comments didn't sway me because it's been missed by FFS community but he has previous for straight up lying and making things up, not sure if it's his English or what but yeah don't trust him

Didn’t know he’d miss first game, thought he’d play tbh but there was a good chance he wouldn’t play both or minutes would be managed. Thought Bruno more likely to play the two.

Seen way more salty posts crying about luck than any self proclamations of genius

I repeat, Bruno when he's the main man consistently delivered fpl points, there was strong reason to believe that Ronaldo picked up an injury, and even without the injury at his age would he start both games in quick succession? Probably not

On top of that there was evidence Ralf was changing back to a normal formation from his bonkers 4222222222

It all adds up, were the goals "lucky"? You could say so, but I say an elite player delivered when the circumstances went back to the last time he was delivering points in a similar manner

Was it a bad decision? No. Was very close to doing it myself. Did Fernandes cappers got lucky? Yes. The outcome was disproportionate to the decision of going Fernandes over Ronaldo imho, but that's how this game is really.

See I don't think it is that disproportionate, under Ole man utd regularly got dominated, didn't play well, and Bruno would haul. This was a return to a style, formation, and making Bruno the main man that suits him to the ground. Luck is involved in everything of course but it's not as lucky as some are making out

And again, there's way more people crying about the luck than there is people claiming to be geniuses for getting him

Of course Fernandes getting 2 goals was lucky unless you expect him to do it every game he plays. Even under Ole he didn't do that very often. As I say, the decision itself was good imho, but 15 pointer is a very rare occurance, even for players like Salah.

Ah you mean like the total of 15 points, yeah nobody can expect two goals but I was fairly confident that Ronaldo wouldn't be in 1 of the games and Bruno has fpl pedigree to get big returns away from home, granted usually relying on penalties

Ok, already said that the decision was fine, almost did the same. But I wonder what would your opinion be if he blanked yesterday.

I know, my response originally wasn't even to you it was the guy claiming there's lots of Bruno cappers claiming to be geniuses

                                My opinion on what exactly?

On how good the decision to get Fernandes was. The narration here/on Twitter would probably be that people got a player who hasn't scored in 20 games and how terrible the decision was. The evaluation of a decision will always be skewed by the outcome in one way or another imho.

                        Very sensible post, hats off.

Disproportionate is the word. People who picked Bruno on the info available made a smart and correct decision, irrespective of the outcome. However, the outcome was disproportionate to that decision

                  I bought Bruno because:

                  1. I had DCL, Antonio and King up front and didn't want to take a hit for Ronaldo
                  2. Son got injured.
                  3. Maddison became a non option due to the Burnley cancellation.

Was forced into it because there was little other option. I didn't do it because I thought Ronaldo might be out.

It was a punt and I got lucky. I also took a punt on Havertz captain and got very unlucky.

For those with Son (and Salah) then by deadline there were no other midfield options left. Moura (game likely off), Mount (city and lots of blanks incoming), Maddison (game off)).

So it became a case that Fernandes was the ‘only’ option even worth going for even though based on his form weren’t expecting much (I had Son & Salah and went for Trossard and Bruno).

Then those who had good strikers didn’t want to sell ended up captaining Bruno by default. Just really a perfect storm.

What I don’t understand is how people with both Fernandes & Ronaldo captained Fernandes (especially after the press conference where Ralf implied he was okay)

The Statsbomb xG model (which I think is meant to be the best) has him at 0.2 xG. 2 goals from 2 shots. Fair play to owners though, even if a big luck element!

Australian snooker player, one of the best, not O'Sullivan level though. Left handed, which is rare, and he was out for a Long time and now he is back.

I’m think of doing my WC. Team needs a shake up and I can’t get ahead of my problems with transfers. Thinking something like this

                Sa (Foster)
                TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, Laporte (Davies)
                Salah, KDB, Coutinho, Raphinha, Bowen
                Dennis, (ASM, Broja)

Pick the forward with the best fixture each week.
Triple City and Liverpool just seems like the best strategy even with covid stuff.

                Thoughts?

I just dont like one forward, you have 2 decent back ups but 2 is maybe too many. You are probably spending money for the sake of it having asm and broja, even 0.1 comes in handy at times let alone 0.5 or a mil.

True. I can get up to 7.5-8.0 by making Broja a 4.5 and/or making the fifth defender a 4.0.

2 moves takes money out of somewhere else to up front. It’s not too hard to do.

This season with ilnesses and postponements having two triple ups without full bench is quite risky also. Just something to think about. BB is another issue for those who have it.

What's the ideal strike force though at this point? I keep some tables of expected attacking points (basically xG + xA adjusted for FPL scoring) and 11 of the top 12 over the last 6 matches are midfielders and 1 is a forward (CR7).

For the last whole I’ve felt behind just slightly - or just have been missing on making the right choices when they present themselves.

Almost good will get me nowhere right now - hence trying to attack with a WC. I could meander to a decent OR as it is but that doesn’t seem fun.

I think it's more about replacement value. There are couple of good options in the midfield to replace Jota while suddenly not so many in the defence, so I think there could be a reason in going Robertson.

Small point. Jota received 3 points.
The article states "as the Portuguese was hooked after 82 minutes to avoid injury and produced just two FPL points". They forgot the CS.

Think I'll keep Jota so can't fit Robbo once Salah returns.

He will be game time risk, and he has to share minutes with Firmino, I believe. It may be difficult / unaffordable to have him, Son, Salah and KdB.

Basically considering something similar, but I fear Laporte to be rested this week. Would be logical after Dias.

He seems to have played a lot of games but feel Stones is the one to make way for Dias?

Why? Last season it was Dias and Stones who played a lot togerher. Stones hasn't been playing much, so he doesn't need a rest now. Yes, Laporte is higher on the pecking order than Stones, but the odd rest for Laporte could be now after Dias got his first.

Thoughts on what to do here?

                DDG - 4.0
                TAA - Cancelo - Coufal - Williams - Goode*
                KDB - Son* - Jota - Bowen - Gray
                CR7 - Dennis - King

Ronaldo is in Madrid, his partner has posted a picture of some food that confirms their location.

It looks like he travelled using a private plane. Hopefully its just a weekend break.

Quite a bit of salt doing the rounds. I bought and captained Ronaldo when the easier move would have been straight Salah to Bruno. I have licked my wounds and concede I made a bad managerial decision. Yes I am a little grieved by how well Bruno did (esp the first goal) but them the breaks. Got to buy a raffle ticket and I missed the chance so only got myself to blame

In fairness the reverse happened in the home fixture vs Villa, he was immense that day and missed a last gasp penalty.

I was Bruno (C) that day

                  I said this earlier:

Digne seemed to be a different player yesterday, but I just can’t get the bad taste of GWS with negative points and bonehead decisions out of my mouth. As a Villa supporter I really hope he delivers but as fantasy manager nowhere near willing to take risk he presents. Will take way more than one meltdown-free game for me to consider him

                  A. But no need to use WC to get Salah. A few hits will do it. WC better later to plan longer term and for DGWs

Top tip when displaying WC teams (makes for an easier read) post the 15 players with blank spaces or XXX for the players that change. Then just do A/B with the players listen faterwards because my eyes are all over the place trying to compare the two teams.

                  EG:

                  XXX Gunnerson
                  TAA, Cancelo, Sanchez, White, Marcal
                  Salah, Jota, Coutinho, Bowen, XXX
                  Dennis

                  A) Fernandez, Bissouma, Kane, Antonio
                  B) Sanchez, KDB, DCL, Rich

I like the look of B better but not sure my thoughts on double EVE forwards

This is just what you prefer, though, Zenith, isn't it, or what works for you? People process things in different ways

Nobody on this site would prefer reading the same 11 players twice whilst trying to fish out the four differentials. Also worth noting it wouldn't have been as bad had say the midfielders and strikers been typed in the same order. My eyes were constantly flicking back between the two midfields before realising the only difference was KDB & Bissouma because Coutinho is 2nd in the first team and 5th in the second team with Bowen 3rd & 4th and Jota 4th & 3rd.

Furthermore if you're reaching out to the community for help/assistance/feedback/input then making their lives as easy as possible is more likely to generate you responses.

I get all that, I'm just suggesting that there are different ways to format information, and whether or not the way this was originally presented is great, one person can't really be speaking for everyone else

OK sorry, the "general consensus" or my preferred way of viewing is display team then list A/B/C options (like 90% of this site do)

Nice, maybe say it that way to the person you're originally saying it too, then. Much more polite and reasonable.

Easier for me to just compare A to B without filling in the X gaps.

You're telling me, comparing those two teams was easier than just comparing A v B? No shot.

I look at two teams. Not look at one team with missing players, look below to the missing players, add them to team , work out that team. Then repeat for second team. As Bennerman saus, different people process data in different ways.

Exactly, many different ways to process things.

Think the guy who originally posted saw it clearly the way he saw it, and therefore spelled it out that way.

*caveat, unless the teams are completely different (like 50% or more different) then personally I'd display the players that are the same first in the team builds

Decided not to go -8 and take out Rudiger for Robertson which means I'd have started Robertson instead of Keane. So that's a, what, 10 point swing. Gutted.

Also yes hindsight is a beautiful thing, should've started Rudiger over Keane but I thought City were going to spank Chelsea and I expected Brighton to score midweek whereas Keane was playing a team with 8 goals in 20 games prior to the weekend.

                Any other Salah holders?
Thinking I definitely should've traded to Bruno, in hindsight. Son's injury caused a bit of indecision, initially, I was FH'ing.

noone on here advised to trade to Bruno. I did it, but was told on here not to do it by literally every reply i had. I just fancied the punt though. So i wouldn't kick yourself.

Yeh. I hadn't given it much thought until Son's injury was announced.
As you say. Just one of them.

No. Can get him back if needed. Don't have Bruno either. No point in having that much money on the bench when there's points to be won. Saying there's points to be won isn't tge same as me winnjng many points though!

Yeh, as I mentioned, the initial plan before Son's injury was to use the FH, i.e. would've eased the burden of holding Salah slightly.

                  Yeah still have him.
When many sold Salah to Son in BGW19, I sold Jota as I thought Salah would be by far the best captain option in the game GW20 vs. LEI and wrongly thought FPL towers might protect his price more.
Then of course Salah (c) got 0 points in GW20 in like the only GW he didn't have 200% EO. Big swing moment in the season.
Since then I've had other priorities e.g. Son injury. Losing a load of TV in the process!
