Pro Pundits

The Aston Villa and Man City players on my FPL wishlist ahead of Gameweek 23

Thankfully, it looks like the Premier League is considering revising its rules on postponements during the winter break which should hopefully lead to a lot fewer Premier League matches being called off.

The signs are also good when it comes to weekly testing for coronavirus, with positive results at their lowest since early December.

“Premier League says of 13,625 Covid tests last week there were 33 positive cases. Third week in a row the number of positive results has decreased and the lowest number of positives since December 5. Makes a mockery of attempted postponements by clubs loaning/selling players.” – Samuel Luckhurst

Keeping this in mind, I think as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, we can start looking ahead and get back into a little bit of planning. I did a long-form article last week scanning the potential chip opportunities which I highly recommend you to read here.

Now that you’re up to speed with the article, there are two teams that I mainly want to discuss and target with my FPL transfers: Aston Villa and Manchester City.

All stats and graphics from this piece are taken from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

ASTON VILLA

pro-pundit-aston-villa-and-manchester-city

Villa’s fixtures right until Gameweek 29 are very favourable and their two unscheduled games are against Burnley at home and Leeds United away. These are excellent match-ups for a team that has really impressed me every single time I watch them and who have an array of attractive FPL options.

A lot of us are sitting on Chelsea defenders at the moment, including myself, which is why Lucas Digne (£5.0m) is in my thoughts as a prime candidate to come in. In his time in Scotland, Steven Gerrard progressively transformed Rangers from a team that shipped 50 goals a season to a side that conceded on just 13 occasions in 2020/21. We’ve already seen some good defensive progress from Aston Villa under Gerrard, as they are the sixth-best team for minutes per expected goals conceded (xGC) since his appointment. This is even more impressive when you consider that Villa have faced the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Leicester City in that period. It should, ideally, only get better from here onwards.

Gerrard likes his full-backs to offer width in attack as he plays with inside forwards, which means that for a quality player like Digne, who has averaged nine returns a season at Everton, the points potential on both sides of the pitch is very high. We already saw signs of that against Manchester United, where Digne was very advanced on that left-hand side, and he slotted in seamlessly, creating two chances and clocking up two shots in the box. At a price of just £5.0m, I think Digne offers a lot of value and is someone I’m considering very, very strongly.

Digne’s FPL potential evident in Aston Villa debut 3

Above: Digne’s touch heatmap in Gameweek 22 (from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area)

Further up the field, there are three main options that I am looking at. Philippe Coutinho (£7.0m) is someone we know all about and you could see the instant lift he gave Aston Villa once he came one. Tom did an excellent article on him here if you want to read about the sheer pedigree of the player but my primary concern is that I expect him to take a couple of weeks to get up to full speed with his fitness. I am really excited to get him in my FPL team because I have fond memories of him being a trigger-happy player that creates a ton of chances and I expect him to quickly settle into this Aston Villa team in a role almost tailor-made for him as an inside forward.

The other two attackers I am looking at are Jacob Ramsey (£4.6m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.7m) who, in my opinion, are first choices in that Aston Villa team. Ramsey has a real eye for goal and has missed only one game under Gerrard, which was due to a knock. The player and manager have a real blossoming relationship at the moment and when I watch Aston Villa play, Ramsey has a knack for making the right runs towards goal and is very creative as well. He’s behind only John McGinn (£5.8m) for expected goal involvement (xGI) among Aston Villa midfielders under Gerrard and is getting better with every passing game.

In the same mold, Watkins is very important to Gerrard’s pressing system, but I do believe that the hard work he does will open up more spaces for Coutinho and Ramsey. Emiliano Buendia (£6.2m) is a decent alternative FPL option who has really caught my eye in the last four weeks but as things stand, I prefer the other two midfielders from Aston Villa. We need to be careful with price bias when it comes to Ramsey because he’s very much a playable midfielder in my eyes, especially in this kind upcoming run of matches for the Villans. He’s potentially one of the best enablers in the game and he might come in particularly handy if we want to pair Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) with a couple of other premium attackers in the future.

It's a wait and see with possible DGW announcements. Antonio is fine to play this GW imo. Mount will eventually have to go with blanks but he gets returns when you least expect it. If Digne has a DGW he's a solid pick, obviously.

Toying with a WC as I don't like all the one-week DGW punts in my team:

    Thoughts?

    Sa/Pope
    Digne, Cancelo, Robbo, TAA, Laporte
    Bowen, Raphina, KDB, Gallagher, Coutinho
    Watkins, Dennis, DCL

Future GW's: Dennis to Broja, KDB to Salah (one premium only), Robbo to Chelsea defender

-Pope benched for his string of DGW's, players with future GW's in hand (Villa, Everton)
    - I don't love playing it before an IB/Winter Break but it's tempting

Isn't that most of our teams right now with the possibility of postponements?

I look at it now as DGW coverage for the future

Digne, Gallagher, and Dennis are the prime candidates to bench if single gameweeks each week. Just not Dennis this week.

yeah i think this is too spread out - covid in the prem has peaked, and they're about to change the rules (most likely) over the IB. don't think you need to be so careful.

i like most of the players - but i'd start again.

my WC is below for reference - different attitude all together.

        Thanks for the input.

Instead of having a bench for covid, I look at it now as DGW coverage. I won't need to consider a hit to say, bring in the likes of Pope, Villa players, or DCL

Is Kdb to Salah possible in one move? Salah plays Vs Leicester in gw24. You will need him then.
Going triple Villa, and Coutinho not really fit looks risky. Cash over Digne if you must have a defender from Birmingham. Not sure i would go double City when you have that midfield and they dont have doubles, a cheap Lowton and you get some money, in case you need to upgrade some where. I think its a Great team and good picks but maybe too good?

      Solid team.

KDB + Salah will obviously give you great captaincy options.

Seems like a clear bench, with Idah, Lowton and Ait-Nouri (who I really like but not sure if he's nailed). I'd like to have another option for when Tierney blanks

To be honest I see myself starting Ait-Nouri over Dennis quite a lot.
He's starting 9 of the last 12 (missing 3 to injury).
90 mins for all of them. 51 points - 5.6 per game.

Southampton got some games to rearrange and generally a better offensive team and Broja is just so much better. Idah could potentially get more minutes but im not sold on that, Smith changed tactics and he is in, but if he decidr to go back, Idah prob is out. Og Ralph want to keep his job til next season he plays Broja as much as he can. Miles ahead in quality over adam(s)es.

With your team, i would just go Lowton and if you really want a Digne (not sure why though) he could slot in at tierney's bar for a drink or two, so you kind of keep your price spots as it is.

yeah i like keeping 2 cheap defenders in the squad.
i think the Digne thing is dependent on the double - though i would probably prefer Cash.

          • 7 Years

If villa double is burnley then my plan is Watkins and Cash, even thinking Mings, and often when i do that i tend to think, hm, Cash, Digne and Mings, thats an awful lot of potential mistakes combined in that defense. Just look at that second United goal, Digne trying to do a "clever" pass to Luiz, who in order to prevent Dalot to just put the ball forward to Fernandes had to take a uncontrolled jump to try to pass it away, and it ultinately ends up in a goal for United. Mings is a minefield, Cash makes stupid mistakes, and Martinez is not where he used to be.
On the other hand, all 3 are decent offensive threaths, and 5 million ish. If they get Leeds im all over Raph CAP this week.

for sure I wouldn't do 2. Coutinho is new - I could easily see him playing 60 mins max, or starting one/resting one of a double.

also Livra > Digne for me. I'm worried Livra's injury is long term - so he might cause problems later when you don't have the money to upgrade him.

I love Saka but Arsenal's blanks coming up mean it's too valuable a spot in the midfield to waste for me.
Cresswell I think is silly (I'm a WH fan). Our defense is garbage - so even if he gets an odd assist he's maxed out at around 6 points. Do Digne for higher upside.

Otherwise I like it in general. Robbo is a lot of money, and Coutinho is still a gamble - but both could well be worth it.

How do you get to Salah? If it's KDB then use that spare money - if it's one of your other mids I don't think you have enough.

Fair point about Saka. He was just in electric form so I can bench him during the blanks and he can get massive hauls when he plays.

Cresswell was more because of his ridiculous chance creation figures. I've been burnt by Digne a lot in the past and Villa aren't amazing for cleans.

Salah I'm not sure about and I think I'll need to adjust my team to allow for him. Would rather keep KDB moving forward..

        Thank you

I'd start Antonio before I started Ben Davies.

Bring in KDB or Coutinho for Mount? And do Dalot > Digne for -4 if Villa get a DGW? Would be playing Lucas otherwise.

    1FT

    A) B Johnson -> Digne (4-4-2 and bench Gray)

    B) Gray -> Jota (3-4-3 - but 3 Liverpool with blank GW27 coming up)

    C) Gray -> Coutinho (AVL dbl up with Watkins...)

Algeria out so Mahrez back to city. I’d like to get Foden but very concerned over his minutes

This is true but he can play anywhere across the front 3 really so generally speaking, the more attackers they have at their disposal the more risk.

True but he's only really missed out when injured or had covid this season (ignoring his punishment with Grealish), when he's been fit I think he's pretty much always played.

Gray owners what are we doing now?

Praying for an upturn in form with new manager or just sell to Raph?

      I’m considering:

      1) Kane, Son, Reguillon and Dawson to Dennis, Kdb, Laporte and Robertson -8
      Or
      2) Kane, Son, Gray and Dawson to Dennis, Kdb, Raphina and Robertson/Laporte -8
