FPL top 10k: Chip usage and players owned for Double Gameweek 29

Using LiveFPL’s vast array of tools, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

We will examine the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – but chiefly those in the top 10k in the current overall rankings.

Between the two groups (where there will of course be some overlap), these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the growing number of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

There is heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10k figures on the LiveFPL site, of course, such as ownership stats for different rank tiers.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 28 CAPTAINCY

Captaincy stats among the top 1,000 ‘elite’ managers

The captaincy race was wide open this week, with no player getting more than 22% of the vote in either of the above graphics – hence the contrasting scores that we’re seeing in the FPL community.

The current top 10k, perhaps with a view to rank protection and ‘playing it safe’, favoured Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) as their top captain for Gameweek 28.

The historic greats, however, were more inclined to back teammate Reece James (£6.2m) – and were amply rewarded with an 18-point haul.

All bar Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) of the above players still have a fixture to come in Double Gameweek 28, of course.

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

There were a fair few Bench Boosts deployed in the top 10k this week but the Wildcard was the most popular chip, with usage almost doubling (from 35.27% to 66.56%).

Just over one in three FPL managers in the top 10,000 still have three or more chips to use, whilst one in five of these bosses have either maxed out their allocation or have only one chip remaining.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD FOR GAMEWEEK 29

Entering the template squad were Chelsea’s two aforementioned defenders, while disappearing from view were Jarrod Bowen (£7.0m) and Burnley assets.

Joao Cancelo‘s (£7.0m) ownership plummeted, too, given Manchester City’s lack of a ‘double’ and the league leaders’ blank in Gameweek 30.

OWNERSHIP STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 28

TOP 10K: TEMPLATE WILDCARD SQUAD

The template Wildcard squad for Gameweek 28 had three big success stories aside from widely owned Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m): James, Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) and Philippe Coutinho (£7.4m).

This template squad features seven assets with a ‘double’ in Gameweek 29 and nine players who play in Blank Gameweek 30.

TOP 10K: AVERAGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS OWNED PER TEAM FOR DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 29

Wildcarders are, unsurprisingly, a little ahead of their chip-dodging counterparts in terms of Double Gameweek 29/Blank Gameweek 30 preparation.

Those who didn’t deploy the Wildcard in Gameweek 28 have an average of 6.2 players who ‘double’ in the upcoming round, with Liverpool and Arsenal assets accounting for two-thirds of that figure:

Huge game for both sides. Might be one that Burnley consider must-win & set out in a more attacking fashion than usual... Think I'd be inclined to bench Coady, Digne, Ramsey & play all 3 of your budget forwards

Definitely doing Bowen --> Saka and thinking Digne --> VVD for -4. This would leave me with space for two forwards: I'd play Broja and Toney; bench of Dennis, Coady, & Ramsey. Hopefully this was Sou's annual drubbing and Dennis won't go big. He definitely could have had at least one yesterday.

What's hitting you hard is still having him on your team lol. Every time you view your points page and see a 2 pointer its gonna hit you hard

Haha yer, it was mostly tongue in cheek. I've bored myself and others to death asking the usual questions, so thought I'd branch out to other, different issues.

And, tbf, who else is there in that price bracket? I've had other priority transfers over last couple of months. Was happy to leave him in squad as got him cheap with the intention to play from last GW onwards given his fixtures, but got blinded by DGW potential.

And yet, he's crept right up on Ronaldo & Kane, outscoring the latter (in goals if not quite on pts) despite missing 6 games

Captained Salah and Played Cancelo last minute instead of captaining James and playing Saka. The joys of FPL.

I'm wondering how people are planning to target Leicester's upcoming DGWs. Maddison from 30 (if fit) is pretty much a lock for me, and I could double up with Barnes fairly easily or, more awkwardly, Vardy.

But the congested schedule & Vardy fitness are obvious concerns. In earlier Europa League matches, it seemed like Rodgers' plan was to save Vardy for the league & give Daka his chance in Europe. But now, with not much to play for EPL-wise, I wonder if European ties will be prioritised.

Getting Vardy also compromises my midfield budget to the extent that I wouldnt be able to hop onto, say, Havertz/Mount (or anyone above 6.5m bar Salah) so not sure if its worth it

0 interest in Vardy unless on FH in a DGW.

He's way too expensive for someone who will get rotated.

Barnes could be an option, yeah. But I have Maddison already so I guess I'll just sit on him.

Should be a decent option. The only issue here is that Dewsbury-Hall is playing a more advanced role the last couple games but will hopefully drop deeper again when Maddi returns

Kane, Laca, 4.4 is my preferred front trio. Vardy gets rotated too much for his price tag IMO.

I also looked at Kane/Vardy hokey-cokey options, but now they both play in 30, prob both double in 36, and Kane has BHA (H) in 33 which I could easily regret missing if Vardy only plays one of EVE/NEW. 37 could be viable though if Leicester get NOR & WAT

        1. Karhumies
          • 11 Years
          2 years, 1 month ago

Midprice mids are in form, which does allow upgrades in either defence or forwards. Vardy is a question mark for now, while going somewhat big at the back seems very promising. TAA, Cancelo/Robbo, James seems like a solid core for 31+. Rudiger/Matip/Stones as 4th defender and Dier/Doherty as 5th is definitely on the table.

Son to Kulusevski is how everything gets funded IMO. 5th mid Ramsey/Allan is what makes a route to Vardy plausible.

    3. Holmes

no interest in Leicester players even if they had 38 games left. Would have considered Daka/Iheanacho if Vardy was still injured.

I'd looked at getting Vardy in around 30 but would require too much reconfiguration - especially with a FH32 and WC33/4 on the horizon. As we've chatted about, I'm looking at bringing in Maddison in 30 - Barnes is also in the mix; I like having a differential 5th mid in a 4-51.

I'm looking at bringing in a defender in WC33/4 - hopefully we'll know more about the many flagged players as I'd only consider Amartey at this point.

Imagine I’ll end up with one of the mids but rotation seems inevitable with them having little to play for in the league.

Leicester getting knocked out of Europe would probably stabilise the team a bit - I got Schmeichel on my WC this week as he's nailed regardless, will wait and see regarding any others.

I'm playing my Wildcard in GW31 and I've put a lot of Leicester players on my watchlist. You already mentioned Maddison and Barnes, but I'm also looking at Amartey (cheap), Schmeichel (potential clean sheets) and Tielemans (lots of bonus points). I really like their strikers, but the rotation risk and their price tags put me off.

    9. Arteta
      • 8 Years

I'm gonna go for at least one of Barnes and Maddison. It really depends on if strikers keep blanking and I switch system to 451 or 352.

I'm looking at three from these four: Amartey, Lookman, Maddison, Daka...

Not sure Amartey is safe for GW30 with others coming back from injury so keeping an eye out.

Lookman and Daka are favourites ahead of Maddison due to budget and wanting to field 11 for GW30...

Amartey is very safe for GW30 imo.

It's less than 2 weeks away. Evans won't be back until April most likely and Fofana isn't going to walk straight back in either. If you want a defender to cover that week specifically, he's a pretty good pick.

Helps that Leicester have kept two back to back clean sheets as well and he's in good form.

Leicester fan. Fofana will play a part vs Rennes on Thursday, reliably reported. I’d look at Ricardo if fit, Schmeichel and Maddison/Barnes only tbh. I a months time, Fofana could be a really nice option for his price, he is our best CB aside from Evans by some distance. He will play every game once his fitness is secured.

Think Robertson is a good shout. I’d try to get Ings or Watkins for the other

Any transfers worth doing for GW29? Plan is to save and have 2FT for 30.
30 currently 8SGW and no idea who I’d want to buy with 2FT tbh.

    TAA* VVD* Saiss Rudiger
    Salah* Son* Saka* Raphina
    St Max* Jiminez

A but -4 fine if you are bench boosting or don’t have a better playing option and also need to load up for week 30.

I haven’t used triple captain yet: do you think Salah in week 29 is as good as it will get for rest of season?

KDB v NEW and whu in 36 might be decent.

Reece James home to WOL and LEI in 36 potentially.

      I'd go with Salah though.

Just keep in mind that there will be competing priorities for City, and other premium assets, in GW36. I wouldn’t rely on any of them playing twice.

Crellin put out a list of potential options last night, speculating on later doubles:

Looking at this, Havertz/James v WOL and potentially Leeds could be great.

that Chelsea double is at high risk of rotation if it happens. They might be playing 4 fixtures every 2 days

My work ML rival has completely run away with it this year:
    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/122675/history

    105 OR.

His journey to the top seemed to come from nowhere. Was ranked 800K in GW8. Wildcarded and by GW11 was in the top 50K. Been a pretty smooth ride since then all the way up.

Helps that he's gotten absolutely all the huge captain hauls. Salah in 9, Bowen in 21, Bruno in 22, Salah TC in 26, James in 28.

He still has 2FHs and a BB too. I reckon he has a shot at winning the whole thing.

    Pope Weghorst Broja Ramsey

Might transfer Ramsey to Kulu or Gordon

Tempting but if I still had mine I'd hold it for gw36, seems it wont be hard to navigate towards 15 dgw players there

Interested in seeing an analysis of West Ham's form. They look like they are playing poorly (see also how they scraped through in the 4th Round of the FA Cup and then lost in the 5th Round).

Wonder if West Ham are a team to target now, especially with Newcastle (who were previously on the teams to target list) on the rise.

I think he is slowly working his way in as first choice. Not the most reliable defender but he is very well aqquainted with that system. And Emerson is just awful. Also, i think Conte likes that Sessegnon, who is a good dribbler and passer plays left while the more rugged and physical Doherty on the right gives a certain attacking balance. Far from ideal, but Conte got what he got, better than those freakin hens, Reguilion and Emerson.

Ta. He's a good wing-back. Crosses well, arrives in the box late and finishes well with great composure. If he plays ok tonight I'll probably bring him in for the double week... and beyond.
