Ronaldo’s goals, Chelsea’s wing-backs, wasteful Havertz: FPL notes

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Manchester United v Chelsea in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website (which now has a new look!), and our own Premium Members Area.

RONALDO’S HOME COMFORTS

Cristiano Ronaldo’s (£12.2m) goal cancelled out Marcos Alonso’s (£5.6m) opener in the final match of Double Gameweek 34.

The Portuguese had scored two hat-tricks in his past two appearances at Old Trafford, doing so in 3-2 victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City, and continued that rich vein of form with an emphatic second-half strike.

Ronaldo has now remarkably scored eight of United’s last nine Premier League goals, including each of the last five.

He is also the leading Premier League home goalscorer, with his tally of 13 at least two more than any other player:

“Not only the goal Cristiano (Ronaldo) scored but his whole performance, his attitude at age of 37, this is not normal to do that. If he plays like he did today he can still be a big help to this team. It is Erik’s (ten Hag) and Cristiano’s decision for what he can do next but today his performance was really great.” – Ralf Rangnick on Cristiano Ronaldo

“We showed a good reaction in the second half, and it was a great finish from Cristiano Ronaldo. In the first half we had our problems and we needed a few great saves from David de Gea. Second half we did better and we got more control. You could see they are a top team, it’s no coincidence they won the Champions League and we don’t have much confidence and had eight players missing. Although it was still a lucky draw, we earned it. At times we saw the gap, but they played with their best XI and we had players missing. We have problems with defending, not compact enough and not physical enough.” – Ralf Rangnick

CHELSEA’S WING-BACKS

Marcos Alonso scored his second goal in four matches for Chelsea on Thursday, a lovely angled volley that flew past David de Gea (£5.1m).

As a result, the Spaniard ends Double Gameweek 34 as the Blues’ highest-scoring player, with an impressive 19 points across his two outings.

However, Reece James (£6.4m) – who recovered from injury and was back on the right-flank – was incredibly unfortunate not to return, too.

The England international added another dimension to Chelsea’s attacking play, hitting the outside of the post from a Mason Mount (£7.7m) pass and producing a David Beckham-esque cross that Kai Havertz (£7.9m) really should have done better with.

“Reece James played a very good match and Mason Mount unlucky with his decisions.” – Thomas Tuchel

WASTEFUL HAVERTZ

Chelsea carved open United’s defence a number of times, particularly in the first-half, and they will kick themselves that they didn’t take maximum points from Old Trafford.

That it was goalless at half-time was largely due to Kai Havertz, who missed three major openings for the Blues in the opening 45 minutes.

In fact, the German racked up 0.96 expected goals (xG) against United from five shots, more than any other player on the pitch.

However, he did at least provide an assist for his owners, with his flick-on finding Alonso at the far post.

“He needs to fight back into his shape. The guys are still young upfront and we will not start pointing fingers. At Southampton and at the Bernabeu, we took our chances. So, when we look at the data, there is a huge amount of intensity from Kai (Havertz) and Timo (Werner), so they don’t arrive fully fresh in these moments.” – Thomas Tuchel on Kai Havertz

Chelsea’s remaining games after this are as follows, with the second part of their Gameweek 36 double-header against Leeds United looking particularly troublesome for rotation, given that it arrives just three days before the FA Cup final.

  • Sunday 1 May: Gameweek 35 – Everton (a)
  • Saturday 7 May: Gameweek 36 – Wolverhampton Wanderers (h)
  • Wednesday 11 May: Gameweek 36 – Leeds United (a)
  • Saturday 14 May: FA Cup final – Liverpool (n)
  • Thursday 19 May: Gameweek 37 – Leicester City (h)
  • Sunday 22 May: Gameweek 38 – Watford (h)

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Dalot, Lindelof, Varane, Telles, McTominay, Matic (Jones 79), Elanga (Garnacho 90+1), Fernandes, Rashford (Mata 79), Ronaldo

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, James, Jorginho, Kante (Loftus-Cheek 82), Alonso, Mount, Werner (Pulisic 71), Havertz (Lukaku 70)

Mount to Havertz crazy? Mount looked no where near the action and Havertz like he could have scored some.

I disagree. Think Mount was as involved as Havertz - though Alsono/Havertz combo seemed a little smoother than Mount/James.

I wouldn’t make that move at all.

Also Mount gets the 90 more it seems.

Which of the following moves would you do over the next 2 GWs?

    A) GW35: James + Kulu --> Mings + Foden (Sterling C) - 4
    GW36: Sterling + Broja --> KDB(c) + 4.5

    B) GW35: James --> Laporte (Sterling C)

James to Laporte or Dias more reliable
a little hamstrung with funds given such a strong backline and Salah Kane
Is Kane your captain this week? if not I would probably go without to strengthen elsewhere and bring back spurs in 37

Kane's my captain yeah. I would do James to one of those, but it doesnt actually give me enough cash to upgrade Gelhardt anyway. I'm at 0.0ITB with the team above.

probably comes down to your Kane preference. If you want to keep him for non 37 games then not a lot of options outside of Mateta if you go James to Alonso.
Otherwise as is and move Kane in 36 for other doublers

definitely not the worst option! Cash can go big and is every chance of outscoring James the rest of the way given xMins so getting an extra striker who plays is handy

          Nketiah work?
Gelhardt just doesn’t play more than 10 mins if that. Makes no sense for a BB.

Yeah I don't like Gelhardt but him and Greenwood were the only ones I could afford for a last forward. James > Laporte still only leaves me 5.0 for a forward, so still stuck, cant quite get to Nketiah or Dennis

Can I get some opinions please

    I will be BB'ing in 36 so after the doubles + FH37

    - right to bench Maddison given likely chance of rotation. is there an obvious move to sell him this week or just hold for 36
    - hold chelsea players this week for Everton and look to swap out for 36 potentially or just make the moves now
    - i'm not sure if I can roll transfer based on above but i'll need at least one transfer to move Cucho on for a player with good 36/38 fixtures, thinking Toney
    - any other moves to make based on chip strategy?
    - chasing rank, 40 pts from 100k - captain Sterling or Saka?

    Schmeichel
    Robbo Laporte Matip Dias
    Salah Saka Havertz Sterling
    Pukki Werner
    Foster Maddison White Cucho

      I’d Captain Saka over Sterling.

I really like Zaha myself. Not sure how he works with your plans.

Sterling can be involved a whole bunch and blank. Seems weird but it happens so much.
Saka on pens, WH will rotate/rest a whole lot of their team.

Just my opinion. Think they’re both good options.

Would you then suggest to roll transfer and tackle 36 separately?
debating whether to remove chelsea now and just ditch all together or hope they play WOL game in 36 + WAT in 38 which might be enough to keep.
Zaha def on the radar, WAT MUN 36/38 even though no double. Otherwise would be on my FH team

BB36 planned. All play twice except Bowen & Broja.

    Someone talk me out of rage transferring James out. 1FT w/ 0.2 ITB;

    Schmeichel | Foster
Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Emerson Royal
Salah, Maddi, Saka, Bowen | Ramsey
    Kane | Broja, Gelhardt

    A) James > Alonso (free) gives 0.9 ITB for a GW36 transfer
    B) James > Zinchenko (free) gives 1.2 ITB for Gelhardt > Nketiah for GW36
    C) Do nothing roll the FT

Also GTG or Ramsey (v NOR) start instead of Maddi (v tot) and Foster (v BUR) start instead of Schmeichel (v tot)?

    1. Zenith UK

It is quite a big punt. I'm currently 28K and WAS hoping for top 10K but looking slim now.

        ML Leader has 2303, I have 2275. So he has a 28 point advantage and differences are;

        Schmeichel & Foster v Sa & Ramsdale
        Emerson Royal v Livramento
        Bowen & Ramsey v Son & Kulu
        Kane & Gelhardt v Weghorst & Dennis
        BB36 v no more chips.

        Which would you rather?

        1. RogDog_jimmy
          • 3 Years
          1 year, 12 months ago

Probably B for players but A for chips. Which makes sense.

Think the captain could be where to make the moves.

      Option E)

Kane, Gelhardt & Ramsey > Jesus, Nketiah & Havertz (-8) this week or -4 next week (currently have exact funds, any price changes and I can't do it).

don't think bringing in Zinchenko with a transfer is wise. don't forget you'll still own him the following week or needing to use another transfer to take him out. He's the type of player to punt on FH only
James to Alonso can be seen as recency bias but if it free up funds then I can see the logic. personally don't want any chelsea defenders.
With BB36 in mind and chelsea to rotate for fa cup, the smart move is to roll imo

I always have a look at premiums in last home games of the season but this is an early one for sure - made my captain mind up in a tight captain call

well at least he's in good form, he was a hero of my FH this week, if i had him this week i'd probably cap him too, as it is i'm capping Coutinho lol

    Just did havertz+kane > KDB+Jesus.
I may live to regret that decision but hey its the end of the season, pep roulette here we go.

Havertz and Jesus will probably play similar minutes to the end and KDB is a better premium pick than Kane, so I think personally they are good moves.

No for me. Wouldn't lose Son and Bruno G in good form (albeit not great fixtures and no DGW).
Young and Mahrez/foden not nailed, Countinho not in form

    G2G?

The only move I'm contemplating is Sterling to Son,
but rolling can get me up to KDB next GW instead

    Foster
    TAA | Matip | Cancelo | James
    Salah | Sterling (C) | Mount | Saka
    Werner | Nketiah

    Kasper | B.Davies | Pukki | KDH

    Best option for GW35:

    Doherty >>

    1. Laporte (-4) [currently have no Man City]
    2. Matip
    3. Save FT [play Schar]

    Thanks

Probably 1, presuming he keeps a CS you'll make a gain on the 0 Doherty would've scored or the 1 Schar will get (if he's lucky)

Hey all, half cut on dry martinis at a weekday wedding but as fun and exuberant as the day has been, my selfish thoughts move swiftly to the weekend. Shocker of a season but got the best chance all season of winning a fair few monthly prizes of decent cash prizes and the obligatory boasting rights. But more than anything to take something from this season....
My lead in the various leagues is between 20-30 points, I have no chips left and the maximum moves I’m even debating or calculating are as follows:
Fernandes, Telles, Schar and Wood out for Coutinho, Cancelo, TAA and Mateta. Obviously a big hit with the exact money and sorrry for the long message but are these legit moves or too much and scale back for the end of the month. To note this is heavily influenced by 6 dry gin martinis on top of.....

Normally I wouldn't go for such a big hit when leading, but looking at the proposed moves I think they'll be worth it, especially seeing United blank anyways soon.
Do any of the people behind you have the players you're looking to bring in, would be nice to block them? And is Mateta the best option at the price range?
      Also enjoy the wedding!

Thanks very much but the wedding is now dust, hence why FPL chat ihe serious chat now ha. Cancelo and TTA is heavily owned by many below me. I have the exact funds for Mateta but more than open for suggestions/advice.....

    Good to go for GW35

    Sa
    Cancelo TAA James White
    Salah Kulusevski Maddison Saka
    Kane Weghorst

    Dubravka; Maddison; Fofana; Raphinha

I’m thinking of either rolling the transfer and hoping that Saka will play and planning to use my BB in GW36 OR transferring either James to Laporte or Raphinha to Gordon
