Scout Picks - Bus Team

FPL Gameweek 37 Scout Picks early selection: Villa triple-up for final ‘double’

We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Double Gameweek 37 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s essentially a rough, first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.5m budget for our starting XI (making it affordable for those whose team values are low), although the bench options aren’t just unplayable fodder as you might have in your own Free Hit squads.

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries, midweek minutes and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys – will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Here it is, then: our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 37, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

THE LIKELY LADS

Salah's brace, Mane's form and United's change of shape: FPL notes 2

For the final time in 2021/22, we have a pool of Double Gameweek players to choose from. These ‘doublers’ will no doubt form the backbone of our Scout Picks this week but, unlike in Gameweek 37, we’re very unlikely to cherry-pick 11 FPL assets with two fixtures.

So, we start with the Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Everton options who are likely to make the cut; more on Leicester City and Burnley in a bit.

With Patrick Vieira pledging to take a look at squad and academy players in the run-in, rotation could be an issue with the Eagles. The in-form Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) looks about the safest bet for a pair of starts, with his benching in Gameweek 35 attributed to knocks picked up from the previous match against Leeds. His only other substitute appearance in 2021/22 also came off the back of an illness. The penalty-taking winger has got eight goals in 13 matches, a period in which no FPL asset under £12.0m has had more shots in the box. Joachim Andersen (£4.6m) is similarly the securest representative from a Palace defence that has kept five clean sheets in eight matches, with Vicente Guaita (£4.6m) and Marc Guehi (£4.5m) possibly injured.

Rotation is also a concern with Villa, with Steven Gerrard saying on Saturday that his line-up is “going to change with five games in a short space of time”. The appeal of Philippe Coutinho (£7.1m) has consequently taken a bit of a blow and it can’t be ruled out that even the most ‘nailed’ of Villa assets gets a late-season breather, with little left to play for. Still, the fixtures aren’t bad and the Villans have been something of a flat-track bully under Gerrard: since he took over, Villa have kept clean sheets in eight of their 15 matches against clubs now ranked ninth or below (and zero versus the top eight). Emi Martinez (£5.5m), Lucas Digne (£5.0m) and Matty Cash (£5.3m) are all tussling for our investment, with the latter two offering a bit of attacking threat: the pair created five chances between them on Saturday alone. Further forward, Danny Ings (£7.7m) has seven attacking returns in as many matches but there’ll be concerns about his ability to get through successive starts in a fortnight, so Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) – third among forwards for goal attempts and shots in the box in the Gerrard era – might be the safer play.

Everton broke their away-day drought on Sunday but it’s been a sunnier picture at home for some time now, with Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs managing only one goal between them in recent trips to Goodison Park. Four clean sheets have been banked in Frank Lampard’s seven home fixtures in charge, so Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) or Vitaliy Mykolenko (£4.9m) – who is now playing a bit more advanced at left wing-back – have good shouts for inclusion this week, as the Toffees play host to Brentford and Palace. At the other end of the pitch, Richarlison (£7.5m) is sitting top of the Premier League table for expected goal involvement (xGI) over the last six matches, albeit with two penalties accounting for some of that total.

Away from the Double Gameweek clubs, there are two stand-out fixtures: Southampton v Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley.

Our selections from Jurgen Klopp’s troops will almost certainly be influenced by the starts, minutes and injuries accrued against Aston Villa on Tuesday night and especially in the FA Cup final on Saturday, which happily we FPL managers will get to see before making our final decisions ahead of the Sunday morning deadline. It’d be a bit of a wasted enterprise making a case for one Red over another without that information, but it’s safe to say that Andrew Robertson (£7.3m), Luis Diaz (£8.0m) and Diogo Jota (£8.3m) could well come into the equation to challenge or supplement Scout Picks staples Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.3m). Opponents Southampton have conceded more goals, expected goals (xGC) and big chances than any other side from Gameweek 28 onwards, scoring on just seven occasions in those 10 fixtures.

The quick turnaround is a bit of a concern for Spurs this weekend, as there’ll be just over 60 hours between full-time in the north London derby on Thursday and kick-off in the Gameweek 37 curtain-raiser. But the Lilywhites’ front three, and Son Heung-min (£11.0m) in particular, are still attractive propositions against a Burnley side potentially missing both of their first-choice centre-halves. It’s a stat we’ve bored you to death with of late but it’s worth reiterating that Harry Kane (£12.4m), Son and Dejan Kulusevski (£6.3m) are first, second and third among FPL assets for attacking returns since the Swede’s full debut.

IN CONTENTION

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Gameweek 34 Wildcard

We’ve not touched on Leicester yet, partly because their second Double Gameweek 37 fixture is away at Chelsea but also because rotation might be a concern, with the Foxes now deep into a period where they are playing six times in cup and league over the space of 17 days. The fitness of James Maddison (£6.9m), absent in Leicester’s last two league matches thanks to ongoing niggles, is the main drawback to the Foxes midfielder, who has 15 attacking returns in his last 19 outings. The rotation-proof Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) is certainly in contention, with Watford scoring just nine goals in Roy Hodgson’s 15 matches in charge, while Timothy Castagne (£5.3m) is also a leftfield possibility as the threat to his starts has diminished thanks to injury elsewhere.

Manchester City are usually regular fixtures in the Scout Picks but representation might be low this week, with the premiums of Spurs and Liverpool having more favourable-on-paper fixtures and Double Gameweek assets abounding elsewhere.

City, of course, are capable of racking up the goals against pretty much anyone but it is noteworthy that they’ve not scored more than two goals against Gameweek 37 opponents West Ham since David Moyes took charge and the matches are often tight affairs:

Nevertheless, season-ending injuries to three key defenders make the backline a bit easier to predict, with Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.3m) offering us a cut-price route into the division’s statistically best defence. Again, midweek minutes will be key in cementing those City attacking selections if we make any, but given the potentially tricky nature of the match, we can expect regulars like Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) and Phil Foden (£7.9m) to make the cut in east London.

THE LONG SHOTS

Five goals in six starts for Cornet as set-piece problems continue at Palace 2

Away at free-scoring Spurs and flat-track bullies Villa, there is little incentive to select Burnley assets despite their double-header. Potentially injury-hit at the back (we await further news on Tarkowski), they were also down a couple of forwards on Saturday and Wout Weghorst (£6.3m) continues to struggle up top. Maxwel Cornet (£5.8m) is at least among the top five FPL midfielders for xGI over the last six matches, even discounting his missed penalty in Gameweek 33, so is a maverick punt for those managers intent on going double-heavy.

Of the rest of the single Gameweekers, Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) is a real differential shout. Ridiculously in form, with four goals and three assists in his last five run-outs, he is the leading FPL midfielder for non-penalty xGI over the last six matches. He’ll also be up against a leaky Leeds side who will be without a right-back following Luke Ayling‘s (£4.3m) dismissal on Sunday.

Wolves defenders are also an outside possibility against a relegated Norwich side who are the division’s lowest scorers, although Bruno Lage’s troops aren’t in particularly good form themselves at the back.

Mid-price Arsenal assets Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) and Eddie Nketiah (£5.6m) may be the ones making way to accommodate the one-week gambles, meanwhile, particularly as opponents Newcastle have conceded just six goals in their last nine home fixtures.

I assume we won't have definite news about Alonso until we'll see the next Chelsea lineup?

  3. Will Haaland be an immediate must-have if he joins City?

A lot of talk about Haaland with a deal looking close, but what's the general thinking in FPL terms of Haaland joining City? This is a long off-the-cuff post with my thoughts that I just wanted to post at a quieter time so just skip past if it's too long (which it definitely is).

It seems like a lot are convinced he'll be the go-to option for City and one of the first names on the teamsheet every week (thus an easy pick), but I'm thinking it may take some time for him to adjust to City and the way they play. The Atheltic, in their article a few weeks ago about him agreeing personal terms, noted how Aguero even after a few years at City was often on the bench in big games in favour of others like Jesus that would press more, and how for a period, Pep seemed to lose faith in Aguero being able to adapt to his system and what he wanted out of him so he was playing very little.

They're in different teams of course, but we've seen how long it has taken the likes of Sancho, Werner and Havertz to adapt to the PL from the Bundesliga. The latter last season both remarked how they weren't expecting the league to be as intense, fast and physical as it is despite the reputation that it holds, with Havertz at one point saying that PL games were "exhausting". Haaland has missed a fair bit of time predominantly due to muscular injuries as well, missing nearly a third of the season (coinciding with Dortmund's exit in the CL) so it's something I'm sure City will need to keep an eye on especially with him still being only 22 when next season begins.

The Athletic also noted that an issue for City in bringing in Haaland could be that they may lose some control in their play and how they approach games. This side has been built over the last couple of seasons on not having an out-and-out striker, so they're used to playing with midfielders at the top of the pitch that can drop deep and create overloads in midfield, while defenders and their wide forwards can attack the space that's then left in behind. That being said, under Rose Dortmund have become more possession-focused this season, coming second only to Bayern Munich for average possession, while Haaland has begun to start to come a little deeper to collect and lay-off the ball (although nowhere near as much as someone like Kane) so it shouldn't be as difficult a job for him to adapt to City's methods as it would have been a couple of seasons ago.

So what's the thinking? Is going with Haaland the best option with him being at the end of City's attacks? KDB and Foden should be more potent with a recognised 9 leading the attack, but will they be less influential in FPL terms as their goalscoring importance is reduced and with one less spot on the pitch available between them and other attackers? Will City lose some of that defensive control while they adapt to playing with a more-traditional CF and be more at risk of conceding more possession and attacks?

Presume Haaland will take pens too, so that'll be hogging some points that are normally shared between Mahrez, Sterling, and KdB too.

I'm not so sure he will. Pep allows the players to select the pen taker. Assuming this, is a little naïve.

Enjoyed the write-up. I won't be buying him gw1. We obviously need to judge the fpl asset he'll be in an epl format.

My thinking is simply wait and see. KdB is an assisting (and baps) machine and if Haaland can convert like Aguero, then in form KdB should benefit. They have also time train. And when some players have had trouble to come to PL, let us not forget likes of Salah and Bruno, who simply came and was more than ready immediately, even without training time with the team. Haaland can convert, KdB can assist and Cancelo also is attacking and good fpl asset if affordable. So from the fpl point of view, Pep can always not start Haaland or sub him off and revert to current system.

True, if this deal is completed early it should certainly benefit both parties. The Grealish deal was completed late enough in the window, the Kane saga dragged on until the end and Havertz was signed quite late for Chelsea too which didn't help him. As you say that would be my worry with Haaland, if he's struggling to get into games or to be involved then Pep may feel like reverting to the system he's used this season while he adapts, which could mean him being benched every now and again or subbed early

Haven't seen enough of Håland yet to contribute much, but I appreciate your thoughts here & also suspect that there will likely be a period of adaptation between his physicality & City's style, so I may hold off buying him initially if I can withstand the FOMO (I'm usually pretty stubborn but maybe as susceptible to shiny new toy syndrome as most are). Or just do some research before I decide

Perhaps he might not find the PL's physicality as hard to adjust to as those others though? Isn't he a bit stronger than Werner & co? Certainly bigger

I think more than anything they were talking about the intensity of games as well as the actual physical nature. He's definitely built more sturdily than those two are but I still think it's possible that he takes a bit of time to get used to it

As you point out I’ve yet to see someone coming in from the bundesliga and kicking off so I wouldn’t be so sure he will be any different. Secondly it’s taken grealish the guts of a year to find his feet at city and to be gently eased into it. Can’t see Haaland just coming in taking a position as regularly as we might guess he might. Off topic and a totally different set up I know but lucaku came in an his ownership was up around 20% witching a week. Look at how that turned out. Premier league I think is a different animal completely. Yes there are always a couple of players who come in and start off well(Diaz, kulu and Bruno G) this year but it’s kind of an exception to the rule. Watch this space I guess but I think it will take a lot of time to acclimatise. I would t be jumping on him from game week 1 anyways

Very good point you make that I forgot to mention about someone like Grealish. We've seen it most recently with Mahrez, Rodri and now Grealish (and you could throw in the likes of Ake, Laporte and Cancelo too). Sometimes even when City have only bought a single player for a high price, they've taken time to adjust and often we only see them flourish in their second season / first full season. Mahrez had very limited gametime in his first season as did Grealish. Rodri had a decent bit of time but looked a bit uneasy in his first season but this season has been one of City's best players. City do seem to lack a killer instinct at times so maybe this will be different but precedent tells us that it may be 23/24 before we see Haaland as a guaranteed starter.

He's already quality, Guardiola will make him better. City are doing well but lack a number 9 with killer instinct. Would have been out the gap in the first leg v Real if they had a clinical finisher with big game temperament. On a tangent now but I think some clubs will benefit from signing a Lewandowski/Benzema-type striker in his 30s who's S&C means he's good for another few years. City won't do that but some club might take that chance.

He does seem like a weird fit for a Pep team, a bit like Grealish was. I wonder if the board are getting involved more in transfer decisions now Pep's contract is winding down.

Saying that, although Pep has a history of preferring a false 9 to control games; even selling Zlatan, and moving the likes of Eto'o and Henry out wide to do this; Lewandowski scored about a goal-a-game for him and was given a central role. If Haaland can replicate what Lewa did under Pep we'll have a top asset.

For me it depends on prices and fixtures. Without them, it's impossible to properly weigh up the opportunity cost of going with or without him.

City have been needing a striker since Aguero left.

All these pundits on tv would make you believe city are doing great without a striker. It's true in some cases but when it matters, in the elite games when you need that person who can make space, who can finish you need an elite striker to gobble up that once chance you may get. If Kane was up top v Madrid city would have come away winners in my opinion.

Haaland may take a season to settle in just like Cancelo did or he could just hit the ground running. City may have to adjust tactically but in a good way.

Also, I do not think we can compare Grealish to Haaland. Sorry Grealish fans but he was never the fit for city in the first place. He is a big fish in a small pond player, he does not have the quality to make it at the top level with City under the style of play they do. He may have patches where he does well but he's not top quality.

If we are comparing players who need time to settle in then as I said Cancelo is a good example. Very poor first season and many people wrote him off but if you watched him at Juve you would know what a quality player he was

This season he has, although I can't really say how similarly teams in the Bundesliga do that compared to PL teams. Dortmund are a team that tend to boss possession now and do face a lot of low blocks, but that being said they do still have a few games where it's to-and-fro

Not immediate for me, no. Presumably he'll be the highest priced player in the game, or the same as Salah. I'm just mindful of Grealish's non-impact this season and wonder if it will take a little time for Haaland to gel with the squad. I do expect him to be unlike Grealish in having a major impact, but maybe not from the off.

Another point not yet made is that City is s great fit for Haaland. A long-term danger with such a top young player is that he'll get over-played and succumb to injuries, particularly muscle injuries due to fatigue which Haaland is already susceptible to. At a club like United he would be over-played and broken but not with Pep at City. He'll get short minutes, he'll get Peptated in games against lesser opposition. Good for the player, good for the club but not good for an FPL prime asset!

It'll be far easier to start with him and end up being wrong than go without him and end up being wrong. If he doesn't start well, Kane should be a similar price for a sideways move. It'll also be easy to bring in someone like Mitrovic or DCL and spend the cash elsewhere. Getting rid of him won't be hard.

It's one of those decisions where an attempt to out-think the crowd would be disproportionately risky, so thinking like a casual is the best bet.

Hopefully they'll price him high enough to stop people from having most of the other good premiums - that's where the complicated dilemmas will be IMO. Going Salahless or sticking with five at the back may finally be viable in the long run.

First swipe at a FH - feedback appreciated.

    Pickford
    Cancelo, James, Digne
    KDB, Son, Salah, Zaha
    Watkins, Weghorst, Nketiah

    Bench is mostly foder.

Not settled on Weghorst but not inspired by any other options up front.

i'm likely going to sell him this week for a -8, thinking Salah, Nketiah, Gelhardt, Foster, ---> Zaha, Watkins, Richarlison, Pickford, basically its 8 players for the price of 2, but no Salah against the Saints, what can go wrong 😆

Are we pronouncing his name as Hah-land or Haw-land? I know the latter is correct but feel really pretentious when I pronounce it like that. Akin to people referring to the other team in Madrid as Atleti and scorning anyone that says Athletico.

Mane is for sure in the red zone and so is Robbo, Jota and Tsimikas to come in tomorrow.

maybe but doubt it as trent had his rest vs Newcastle. Maybe Gomez comes in for southampton.

Klopp will not start Gomez ahead of Trent because Trent had a rest recently & he won’t want to rest both Trent & Robbo at the same time

Doesn't sound like Ramsey is a useful doubler anymore, annoying for those of us who have been holding on to him!

Or buy Kulusevski for free (have Kane)

Depends on how much chasing or if protecting. With -4 Son has lower floor and higher ceiling compared to Kulusevski. So I'd say that Son (-4) has higher risk and higher reward. I am actually considering having them all and perhaps C Kane or C Son.

Difficult - the doubles mean their schedule hasn't actually improved despite being out of Europe so would still expect a bit of rotation. Sounds like Castagen and Justin both injured so might reduce their options.

I don't think i'd ever recommend a hit to lose Cancelo, but gotta worry that City's CS prospects have dwindled with this injury list.

Dennis and Laporte -> Richarlison and Sessnegon -4 sound good? Only two doublers would be Gordon and Rich though. Don’t necessarily mind too much though as feel my team is good
