The world’s greatest Fantasy manager? An FPL Q&A with Fábio Borges

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead is the author of ‘The Great and The Good’ series, which takes a look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted managers.

One of those Fantasy bosses is arguably the best on the planet: Fábio Borges.

Fábio is top of our Career Hall of Fame and is on course for a sixth successive top 2k finish, currently sitting at 865th in the world and with a Free Hit still left to burn.

Greyhead caught up with the elusive Fábio in the last few days for a special Q&A on his FPL strategy.

“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The hands can’t hit what the eyes can’t see.”

The Greatest? I’ll let others argue over that one, but there is no doubt that Fábio Borges is quite good at this FPL lark.

He is no.1 in the Fantasy Football Scout Career Hall of Fame, has finished in the top 2,000 for the last five consecutive years, has never ended a season outside of the top 20,000, came 95th in 2018/19 and currently has another triple-digit rank this campaign.

All this and he is a member, in fact, the reigning champion, of The Great and The Good, my made-up mini-league of some of the more prominent FPL managers.

You can probably tell I’m a fan, and so having gazed admiringly from afar penning my FPL love letters through my weekly articles I was delighted when, through a mutual acquaintance, I was able to get in touch and he agreed to answer some of my burning questions (Pras and SonaldoTM)

So, let’s get to it…

Has your management style changed over the last few seasons?

Laporte injury latest as De Bruyne hauls: FPL notes

Fábio: To be honest, I don’t think it has changed much over the years. I don’t consider myself either a conservative or an aggressive manager since I think it is very important to adapt to the circumstances.

Of course, this season was a bit different than any other given the number of cancellations and Double Gameweeks, which forced me to take more hits and play a bit more aggressively than in previous seasons.

Again, I think being able to adapt to the circumstances is one of the most important skills in FPL.

Comments: Fábio has taken nine hits this season, compared to four in 2019/20, but the point about adaptability being the key skill rings true and rather than considering ourselves maverick or conservative, perhaps we should all strive to be better situational managers.

You had a slow start this season, up to about Gameweek 11/12. How do you manage such a situation, did you ever have doubts about your approach?

Fábio: Yes, of course, I am not immune to bad runs, and I probably complain a bit too much about it with some of my friends and it is something I am trying to improve on.

It is hard not to be upset when your goalkeeper loses a clean sheet at the last minute but, nowadays, whenever things don’t go my way, I just log out for a couple of days and try to forget about FPL.

Then, when I feel motivated again, I start preparing for the next Gameweek and try to make the best decisions I can possibly make with the information I have available at the time.

Comments: It’s refreshing to see that even one of the best managers gets frustrated over a captaincy blank or clean sheet wipe-out. A lesson to us all that taking time away can be the best approach.

    Sorry for the repost guys:

Currently leading ML with 11pts. Trying to balance the FH for 37:

    Pickford*
    Cancelo TAA Cash*
    Son Salah Zaha* Gordon* KDB
    Richarlison* Watkins*

Bench: Dead - Amartey first. 0.3 ITB.

Would you do Cancelo -> Digne?

    Any other suggestions? Cheers!

    What do I do here?
Looking at Son in 38, Zaha this GW but I’m unsure what to do.

    1 FT 0.5 ITB

    Foster Ramsdale
    Cancelo Dias Robbo TAA Alonso
    Mount Salah Kulu Martinelli Gordon
    Watkins Richarlison Dennis

Was gutted when Maddison, Mount and Matip were all no shows in the first games. Then they all went and scored in the second game. Now I’m sitting on 123 with Saka, Nketiah and Son to go.

Just remember, if you’re having a shite gameweek it can always turn around.

Thanks, I need a pick me up.
Wild carded gw35 with the plan to swap Son to KDB on BB. Got nervous about losing Son & thought KDB wasn’t 100% so went Mount to Mahrez (also banking on Mount getting plenty of pre-final rest). 🙁

    Pickford/ Foster
    TAA / Cancelo/ Laporte/ Clyne / Cash
    KDB/ Luis Diaz/ Zaha/ Son/ Gordon
    Ings/ Watkins/ Nketiah

Potential benching headache but with rotation rife I want good options on bench in case

Maybe some doublers only start once but I doubt 3 of those miss out entirely. Although Laporte could give you a headstart on that.... I don't think its a great week for double City defence anyway

    A good article.

I've been wondering what the optimum interval is for player returns and looking at the pattern, even in most premium players hauls are spaced out at say 5 or 6 weeks across the season.

Of course players hit a purple patch or are consistent like Salah or Son, i think i need to be more patient rather than chopping between premiums in midfield and missing the haul.

KDB to Son to Sterling to a combo of Mahrez and Jesus being a case in point.

    Have fun.

Tbh pretty lost on FH, so many options to choose from Salah, Mane, other Pool mids, KDB and City mids, Son, Kane, TAA, Robo, with our without Cancelo, Vardy also in the mix...

This GW is precisely why I want @OfficialFPL to get rid of the Kevin de Bruyne.

Imagine you (c) Salah to your rival's KDB and lost a 80+ pts lead in your mini league!

Months of doing nothing except scrolling on twitter down the drain! It’s not fair.

The lesson here is don’t spend hours and hours watching videos and reading stats for a game that is so largely dependent on luck

When you don’t spend so much time on it you won’t be bothered when it goes wrong

This guy who said Villareal were a "disgrace" to the UCL after the first leg of the semifinal now says KDB's form has dipped in the last few months and that he isn't in the running for player of the season. How do people listen to these muppets

Barring the number of adverts I think talkSPORT is pretty good. Of course some of them come across as muppets but I think they actually do it on purpose to wind people up.

I enjoy listening to Alan Brazil and in particular Simon Jordan.

Having played BB chip in GW26 rather than TC'ing Salah (like the logical move would have been that GW) I honestly thought "season over" for me. That TC chip was just staring at me these past few GWs and I had no idea when to play it, thinking there wouldn't be a haul like Salahs again this season.

KdB you absolute beauty! 150k rise in OR,157 pts and moved into 2nd place with 1st within touching distance all in the space of 1 match really.

    This game is crazy

'Set and forget' Salah (C)'ers benefitting from this approach for about 20 gameweeks now complaining when '3 goals in 10 PL games' Salah doesn't perform like they expect. Honestly, this community is a madness sometimes. Also see people who didn't have the metal to go KDB (if they had the opportunity) now advocating for an overhaul of TC as a result.

Good article, to think someone saying taking 9 hits over a whole season is their highest ever is eye-opening. I've had a lot of weeks where if I decided to just hold firm and not make a move that I had doubts about, I would have done better. I've been far more patient this season than before and in those weeks where I leave things if there's a bit too much up in the air, I tend to do OK (heck this week I'm sitting on 126 with 4 to play tonight and all I did was BrunoG to Gordon). "I could be spending eight points instead of four (one hit to buy and one hit to sell)" is a very smart way of looking at moves you're thinking of making especially if you think they're going to be short-term.

I do think you needed a certain amount of luck this season to have medium to long-term planning to go your way and avoid being forced into hits (looking at Burnley v Spurs snow postponements and then doubling or tripling up on teams that end up having 1-2 games postponed, as well as players missing through covid/injury), and not everyone had that by any means. I remember enviously looking at those with the likes of Vardy on that day raking up the points in a game where you couldn't even see the ball on TV, while I had 3 players miss out from Burnley v Spurs and then Foden missing out due to injury all in the space of about an hour or so derailing my week. This second half of the season has been a lot easier to plan in (although the vast number of doubles muddied the waters a bit) so the fact I'm doing better in that period and generally making less moves certainly makes me feel better going into next season.

Yeah I've taken way more than 9! Maybe even more than double that....
But I think going overboard on hits & seeing what works (& doesn't) is not a bad way of learning the dynamics of the game in my 1st season. Will definitely try to rein it in next year though now that I'm starting to get a bit more competitive about rank

      1. SteJ
        • 4 Years
        1 year, 11 months ago

I've taken 144 points in transfer hits this season (that is not a typo). I'm currently at 58k overall rank.
A more conservative start would have probably saved me 30 of those points and netted me about 90points more for my team.
You can't win this game in week one, but you sure as hell can make it hard to do well

          • 3 Years

That's still an amazing rank. I've seen some saying they've taken hits like you and are sitting so high and I've also seen some saying they've taken next to no hits and are just as high. There certainly isn't just one way to play the game, luck is naturally a big part of it but it's about finding which avenues work for you. Clearly a hit-heavy approach isn't one that works too well for me but I do still like to upside chase where I can if I feel I can make something out of it.

Indeed. Many ways to play the game. One of my best seasons for a long time

You've done exceptionally well for your first season, I've been on and off playing for a lot of years casually since the naughties but properly decided to have a good go at things last year. Did better than I had done before but still did fairly poor and kept falling into casual holes like taking crazy numbers of hits nearly every week once I was behind those in MLs (which was early on) and just not paying enough attention. Patience has really made a big difference this year as well as simply watching football, or at least MOTD or extended highlights. Much like in real life, sometimes you simply have to just try things and make mistakes and learn from it and how to do things better / correctly.

I think a good start normally gives you more breathing space and is likely to reduce the number of hits you take whereas a bad start is probably going to result in some panic moves (or even early WC).

It also gives you the TV boost that helps later in the season. If you land the early form players from GW1, you get a big advantage while everyone plays catch-up. Like DCL going bonkers or Tammy banging them in for fun a season or so ago.
Form didn't last, but a huge early boost

Usually I take about 10-12 hits per season, COVID19 did make me play more aggressive. 23 hits for the season; the last 3 months all of them were related to captaincy. Double Suffering vs. Double Joy.

I've taken my highest even number of hits this season with a total of 11.
To show for that I have my highest ever points total and ranking,
      18,865 and 2439 respectively.
I'm not adverse to the odd hit when it works out - I took a hit for TC Salah in *that* week, and for Son's 19 pointer last week but 11 hits over the season is quite aggressive for an admittedly very conservative player but this season I decided to go all out. I encourage calculated hits, but not hits for the sake of it.

The biggest thing, which I've realized this season, is that worrying about price rises is a weakness.

Of course I understand being priced out of a move, but that seems to always happen down the line! It's amazing how so many FPL managers, including myself, are so consumed with price rises. It's a weakness, honestly, and I've been able to get past that this season in order to wait for pressers each Thurs/Fri.

But Fabio doesn't give to much away. Honestly, I don't blame him! He has own his data models and they clearly work for him.

It's interesting because many (myself included) are really intrigued to read his thoughts, but he doesn't give much away. Every season is obviously different but I would like to read his decision making process behind certain decisions he made each GW.

It seems like he only owned Kane once, on FH. He brought in CR7 early on (after Newcastle haul) and went for Lukaku GW 8 (immediately injured afterwards) but he pretty much avoided premium forwards all year. Many are in this camp, but Kane was very popular midway through the season. He owned Son and captained him a few times.

As far as his hit-taking strategy (wanting the player long-term), I'm sure most would agree. There have been so many DGW's where short-term transfers actually worked brilliantly (Bruno's DGW's, CR7 more recently, KDB) that it was hard to know when to pounce and when to not.

Every week mate, almost every week I say damn should have just done nothing or definitely not taken the hit

Wow, what a move Kane, Maddison, Coady > Dobbin, KDB (C), Cancelo was!
My best move of the season defenitely.

Everton hasnt scored or created much in recent games but their defensive record is now much better. In that mind which of these combos would you go for @ FH?

      A) Pickford+Mykolenko+Richarlison
      B) Pickford+Gordon+Richarlison

Not sure who to start from this lot for next GW, currently on....

      Schmeichel*
      Robertson, Matip, Cstagne*, Cash*
      Zaha*(c), Coutinho*, KDB, Son, Mount
      Richarlison*

      Ramsdale, Jesus, Laporte, Geldhart

Laporte 50%, but seems criminal putting Jesus on bench - swap out for who though? TIA

Higher ceiling with Jesus than Matip.
