What FPL managers can expect from new Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag was named as Manchester United’s new manager in April, with the Dutchman officially taking charge at the end of the season.

The 52-year-old is regarded as one of the most progressive coaches in Europe, after guiding Ajax to five trophies in the past four seasons whilst playing an attractive, attacking brand of football.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, has appointed his own staff with Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren named as his assistants.

United fans will now be hoping ten Hag can bring success to Old Trafford, but what does his appointment mean for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, and can he reinvigorate Bruno Fernandes and co as FPL assets?

In this, our latest Scout Report, we’ll take a closer look.

THE HISTORY

Ten Hag’s decent but modest playing career came to an end in 2002, having spent his whole career in the Netherlands playing as a centre-half for FC Twente, De Graafschap, RKC Waalwijk and FC Utrecht.

After hanging up his boots, he went straight into coaching, working his way through the youth systems before becoming Steve McClaren’s assistant at Twente. The Dutchman only worked with the former England manager for one season, when they finished as runners-up, but clearly left a lasting impression.

“We were starting pre-season training the day after I was appointed. He brought out this folder, and there were six weeks’ worth of pre-season training planned in there. Every minute of every day was laid out, from drinks sessions to warming down, to individual work. It was so detailed. I’d not seen anything like it before, and I’ve not seen anything like it since.

He would prepare meticulous game plans about the opposition. How we were going to press, how we were going to build up. I thought I knew football before, but going there and experiencing that… I knew nothing about football. He could see things in the game that nobody else could see, myself included. I have to sit up in the stands to see the patterns of a game, but he could stand on the touchline (and see them).

He always knew the answer to everything, how to change shape, change positions. His adjustments in the games — obviously I had worked with Sir Alex (Ferguson), and I used to think that some of his subs and changes were strange, but they always worked. Erik is the same in that respect.” – Steve McClaren

His first managerial job followed at Dutch second-tier outfit Go Ahead Eagles in 2012, where he guided the club to its first promotion in 17 years, before taking charge of Bayern Munich II, the German giants’ reserve team. There, he would learn from Pep Guardiola, who had just taken over the first team.

“During my time at Bayern Munich, among other things, I saw how things work (at a big club). Every detail can be picked out for analysis. The media, people in general, always find something if you look for it. A hundred things can go right, if one thing goes wrong, people highlight it. That’s the football world.” – Erik ten Hag

After two years in Bavaria, he returned to the Netherlands in 2015 as Utrecht manager, taking them to fifth spot in his first season and then fourth position in the second, leading to Europa League qualification.

His success at Utrecht saw him become Ajax manager in December 2017 following the dismissal of Marcel Keizer, a decision that was spectacularly validated in the year that followed, as he guided the Dutch giants to the Champions League semi-final in 2018/19. His troops beat defending champions Real Madrid at the last-16 stage and ousted Juventus in the quarter-finals before falling to Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur in the last four. During his time at Ajax, ten Hag also led the Amsterdam club to three Dutch titles and two Dutch cups.

MANAGEMENT STYLE

What FPL managers can expect from new Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag 3

Ten Hag is a perfectionist, who will not be afraid to confront underperforming players if his high standards aren’t met.

“I will not change my view on coaching. The material always determines how you play, but I set the requirements that come with it and the standards. I tell who has what task and those who don’t meet it, will be told that, regardless of who it is. I make no concessions in that regard.” – Erik ten Hag

However, in an attempt to protect his players, such conversations will happen behind closed doors.

“I definitely protect people outwardly. Internally, it can be different if someone has crossed a line. Ultimately, it is top sport. You have to be able to trust each other, otherwise you can’t get results. If my protective attitude comes at the expense of myself, so be it. I am the manager, the leader, I do that in the interest of getting results.” – Erik ten Hag

He also believes he is ready for the intense media scrutiny at Old Trafford.

“You don’t have to read everything. And you know that in my profession you get criticised. You have to deal with that. Sometimes it’s right, sometimes it’s wrong.” – Erik ten Hag

You get the feeling that his handling of the press will be key, too, something Athletic journalist Carl Anka touched on recently.

“Ten Hag has been known to dismiss questions he feels are irrelevant during interviews and press conferences. That has gone down well(ish) in straight-talking Dutch media and football circles, but he may find it odd how often he is asked about United’s glorious past and how quickly he expects to restore the club to their “rightful” place. His answers on questions like these will be important. Especially if he’s asked them just before an international break.” – Carl Anka, The Athletic

PLAYING STYLE

What FPL managers can expect from new Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag 5

“Attack is the best defence and it’s difficult to score against us as, first of all, we attack with 11 and defend with 11. All the players in our way of playing have a job, and have to do that job with 100% discipline. Achieve that, and it’s difficult to score against your team.” – Erik ten Hag

Under ten Hag, Ajax played attacking and aggressive football, dominating possession with lots of pressing.

The Dutch tactician typically employed a 4-2-3-1 formation, which will obviously be familiar to United’s current squad, given it’s the same system used by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and at times, interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

However, he also used a more possession-orientated 4-3-3, a system more typically associated with Dutch football.

In both set-ups, Ajax would build with a back three, either via two centre-halves and one full-back (the other would push into midfield), or a defensive midfielder dropping in. The two central midfielders were expected to get through an almighty amount of work, with their roles as much about playmaking as it was going box-to-box. The wingers were aggressive and expected to win the ball back immediately after losing it, while centre-forward Sebastien Haller came alive in ten Hag’s system, regularly dropping deep to help build up the play and filling the role of target man when Ajax wanted to go long.

Having keenly watched Guardiola at work in Munich, there are many similarities in the way ten Hag’s sides play.

“I learned a lot from Guardiola. His philosophy is sensational, what he did in Barcelona, Bayern and now with Manchester City, that attacking and attractive style sees him win a lot. I want to have possession and hurt the opponent.

It’s about possession, about movement, about vertical attacking patterns, about pressing, wingers moving into the middle to make room for the full-backs. Everyone is attacking, everyone is defending. It’s this structure that I’ve tried to implement with Ajax.” – Erik ten Hag

THE PROSPECTS

What FPL managers can expect from new Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag

United finished 2021/22 with their worst points tally in Premier League history, ending the campaign in sixth spot.

As a result, expectations should be realistic under ten Hag: remember, even Pep himself finished third in his first season at Manchester City.

“I said this is the project, to bring Man United back on top, but also we have to accept the current situation we are in. First of all, Man United belong in the Champions League, so that will be the first target.” – Erik ten Hag

There will undoubtedly be new arrivals this summer, with United already linked to the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Jurrien Timber and Darwin Nunez.

However, there’s also existing talent at the club that shouldn’t be completely written off by FPL managers. If ten Hag can revive some of their careers, we could perhaps see one or two value options emerge, especially as we’re expecting plenty of price drops.

“That we have to accept the current situation but also that they have a good potential. A year before this team was second in the league, so the potential is there. Learn the lessons from this season, we have to analyse clearly what went wrong. But from then on work hard, get a team and fight the opponents.” – Erik ten Hag when asked what his message to the squad will be after a difficult campaign last year

Ten Hag likes his wingers to stay high and wide, so we could see significant improvement from Jadon Sancho, who was up there with the best players in the Bundesliga in 2020/21. At Ajax, right-winger Antony certainly wasn’t afraid to cut inside and take shots, registering 4.1 goal attempts per 90 minutes, netting 12 and assisting a further 10 in all competitions.

Then there’s Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo. The latter had an impressive individual season in 2021/22, scoring 18 goals in 30 Premier League appearances despite the collective decline of the team. Under ten Hag, he should receive the ball much closer to goal, although United will surely sign another forward, not necessarily to replace Ronaldo, but he is 38 years old in February.

If United can fix their midfield, their defenders stand to benefit and Luke Shaw could perhaps thrive, providing he can rekindle his Euro 2020 form. However, it’s not the worst idea to stay clear of United’s backline for the time being, at least initially, given that it may take months to coach an effective counter-press. For example, Guardiola in his debut season at City managed only 12 clean sheets, and just one in their opening nine Premier League outings.

We can, of course, look to pre-season for clues as to how United will perform, but it won’t be until Gameweek 1 and beyond that we can really assess ten Hag’s impact. Chances are, then, the majority will be comfortable with little investment to begin with, although an appealing opening schedule may change things and boost the appeal of an attacking punt.

A safe draft will include TAA, Cancelo, Salah, Haaland. With careful price predictions, you soon realise this year will be tough.

Interesting to see who goes different in the FPL sphere. Son + Kane are the obvious big hitters, but Fernandes and Ronaldo could be rejuvenated with a new manager bounce. Expect Chelsea to sign big, whilst there are viable alternatives in the City and Liverpool teams such as VVD, Robbo, Nunez (I think 10.0m), and KdB. Equally, you’d expect Arsenal to strengthen too e.g., Jesus 9/10m. Vardy is always a dark horse too.

Yeah will be tough to accommodate big at the back & 2 premiums.

How much will the likes of TAA Robbo Cancelo jump by do you think?

Will also be better options on striker front as well so finding the cheap makeweights will be key as always

        I reckon TAA (8.0m), Robbo (7.5m), Cancelo (7.0m)

        TAA, Robbo, Cancelo = 8.0,7.5, 7.5

Why will there be better options? Mitro? Solanke? Bamford and DCL back?

Yes those but more so Nunez Haaland Jesus (hopefully at the Arsenal!) & Wilson.

Definitely good options to switch to at least 2 up top

If you are going to do that then you have to be a good value finder in the other positions. Last season that included players like Bowen, Saka, Mount, Cash and Coady.

Who do you think could be value picks this season?

Yes this is key. To be honest, until price rises it’s harder as value in these areas are increasingly price sensitive.

Not too keen on the promoted teams if I’m honest. I think Newcastle and even United could be good value. Leeds attacking place potentially too.

Agreed. Get those prices on the big 6 clubs high enough so we have to actually research the other 14 teams thoroughly to do well.

Besides Newcastle, Palace and Brentford should also provide good budget assets.

According to Fabrizio, Jesus is still planning to leave but he wants to stay in the PL. If he does then that looks like it means Arsenal or Chelsea and it would be hard to pass him up at either team for me. I've seen a lot of people saying he's never been prolific but easy to forget how good he was when he first joined and that he displaced Aguero from the side for a time. Along with Haaland, it may end up being a challenge to avoid using 1/4 of the budget on the forward line alone this season.

Yeah could be another typical Pep signing, has a quiet 1st season then becomes awesome.
I wonder if he becomes a bit more nailed on, how the line up will start looking...

        KDB, Rodri, Bilva/Foden
        Alvarez Erling Foden/Grealish

Alvarez rotates with Mahrez, Bilva/Foden/Grealish all rotate with each other. Sterling warms the bench if he actuslly stays?

It's a hard one to know just yet, I definitely think there's a chance Sterling goes, he has both Foden and Grealish for competition and there's one less spot that the three of them can end up playing in with 2 strikers joining (although I'm sure Pep will still play with a false 9 on occasion). I just wonder long-term what Pep prefers for Foden, wide left or central midfield but even if Sterling stays he doesn't seem to be getting towards becoming first choice again

Liverpool are set to reach an agreement with Calvin Ramsay on personal terms - they made an official bid to Aberdeen for the Scottish fullback.

Guess this means Neco Williams will be a 4.5m starting defender, should anyone be interested.

  13. What will be the impact of the five subs rule?
    15th Time Lucky

5 subs rule, what impact do we think it will have?

I think it will mostly influence the following:

    1 - wing backs.
This is a high intensity role, I can imagine them being rested once a game is won. Could that mean TAA, Robbo, Chilwell, Cancelo etc all missing out on some clean sheets? Even worse, would managers be more likely to start their back up in easier matches knowing they have enough subs to bring in the first choice at half time if needed?

    2 - high impact players
I'm thinking the likes of Mahrez, Jota, etc. The ones who had great stats per 90 mins, but didn't get a lot of pitch time. Will they get more substantial cameos when they don't start? And will that be a bad thing (more 1-pointers) or a good thing (these guys still look threatening even in short bursts)?

    3 - young forwards
It will be easier for managers to give these guys a few minutes of pitch time. This could make it easier to have one or two 4.5 forwards on your bench as they'll still be picking up odd points when you need the auto-sub.

    4 - captains
Will the big hitters get less minutes? Personally, I think the answer is 'yes, but it might not matter.'
If games are in the balance, then Salah, Son, etc stay in and play the full 90. If the game's won then they might come off early, but they've probably racked up points getting to that winning situation. It might mean fewer big hauls though.
The flip side is that the fewer minutes mean they may well be sharper when they are on, so less minutes, but better performance per 90 to cancel it out.

    What do you all think?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      1 year, 10 months ago

Yeah, all of the above. I posted some thoughts a few days ago - your points, but you've fleshed them out more. I'm particularly concerned about investing in expensive wingbacks. I'm intending to get Haaland, so 2 cheap forwards for the bench - these lads might be quite viable benchies (I'm prepared to fork pout 5-5.5 for them, not 4.5 kids who'll get loaned out down the pyramid). #2 is very dangerous - some expensive assets could get too many 1 or 2 point cameos.

I'm thinking of leaning now towards VVD/Laporte over TAA/Cancelo early on until we see the impact. Definitely a high risk move.

I think point 2 could be high risk high reward. I don't know how many times Jota scored from off the bench, but it feels like a lot. High quality players getting 20mins against a tired backline could be a good source of points. That said, it's not a risk I think I'll be taking to start with.

That seems a little over-cautious to me. I don't think we'll see a massive influx of pre-60min subsitutions, especially in the early stages. I'm sticking with my WBs for now

That is true for the early stages when there's only one match a week. This might be one I sway a lot over once prices are released. Can imagine I'll have a lot of wildly different drafts!

Thinking about Mentaculus' point above, will the very early season with no Europe or Cup games (at least for the European teams) mean that none of these possible impacts will take effect for a few weeks?

Agree. I'd expect the best players to play a lot early doors to get up match fitness. The rotation will kick in when CL starts. Might be a good time to wildcard.

Pep didn't use all his subs when he had three. Many teams don't have the squad depth and are rarely comfortably ahead in games to be able to make luxury subs. So I'm not predicting a drastic change. Where defenders are withdrawn, it could lock in some clean sheets, as I'd expect most of those changes to come after 60.

I'm also worried of situations the other direction though. In the past, Liverpool against Norwich, Klopp might want to rest some of his key players but knows that he needs to win - it's difficult to find the balance when he knows that if it's going wrong he can only bring a max of three big names off the bench to turn it around, and that's assuming that no subs are needed for injuries.

Now, when they play whoever the whipping boss are this year, he can happily start with Tsimikas, Neco Williams and Minamino (or whoever is at the club) and know that if it's going badly then TAA, Robbo and Salah can come on at half time, and he'll still have two subs left for injuries. If they're on top, then he can leave them off for their well earned rest.

I do agree with you about many clubs not having the depth though. I think outside of the European clubs that there won't be much impact.

Even when we get to the more congested part of the schedule, I think 5 subs is going to help to avoid the kind of mass rotation you're talking about here. Its very risky & disruptive to make these wholesale changes tp your lineup. Klopp knows this and will only resort to playing the kind of 2nd 11 used v Southampton away (post FA Cup final) in the most extreme circumstances. Things got a little dicey in that match - and similarly in Norwich (H) without Trent, Robbo, Fabinho, Thiago, etc & they were 1-0 down at half time. Generally I think he tried to avoid resting more than 3-4 players at once (and not Trent/Robbo at the same time). Being able to manage the mins of an extra 2 players per game should allow him to start the first 11 more often this year, maybe just giving 1-2 rests at a time & managing the mins of 5 players (most are capable of 60mins either side of a UCL game without much of a detrimental effect on their fitness levels I imagine)

Good points. I'd sort of add another one- the players we know are 'rotation risks' will have more opportunities now too.

      Someone like Mahrez for example.

Definitely need to watch the high intensity positions like wingbacks - and the Tsimikas' will be about more often you'd think.

      Good ideas.

99.0m, left 1.0m in case of price problems with my predictions. Until I see the 5.0-6.0m midfielders I’ll go with this, and even then I think the defenders are better value at such price anyway. 4.5m mids also better fodder I reckon.

    Raya (4.5)

    TAA (8.0) Cancelo (7.5) Doherty (5.5) Digne (5.0) Mykolenko (5.0)

    Salah (13.0) Kulu (8.0) Bruno G (6.0)

    Haaland (12.0) Watkins (7.0)

    4.0 Bissouma L.Cook FWD(4.5)

I think this structure could get you into trouble because of the lack of flexibility in your midfield. This is typically the position where new good value picks around 6.5m tend to emerge, and also where its beneficial to have around 14m in liquid funds to hop on/off nice fixture runs for mid-pricers. Assuming Salah & Kulu are pretty fixed for you, that gives only the 6m Bruno G spot to play around with, and its difficult to redistrubute funds for this from your other spots that (to me) seem more fixture-dependent - Digne & Mykolenko.

But maybe some of this is personal preference. You couldn't pay me to play less than 4 mids

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
          1 year, 10 months ago

Surely a Liverpool main striker cannot be 9.0m, it would break the game. He's young, there's still firmino and Jota, he isn't guaranteed to be a success BUT if he was to start on fire 9.0 would be game breakingly cheap, 10-10.5 I reckon

          1. Andy_Social
            • 11 Years

We don't know he will be a main striker to start with. He may take half a season to bed in, sharing, as you say, minutes with Jota and Firmino. I'm inclined to go with Diaz as a safer bet.

I just don't see fpl taking that risk is all, it's a big if on whether he will consistently play and be on fire too for the reasons we both agree on but if I was fpl on no planet would I consider making someone that could potentially play the majority of games for Liverpool as main striker as 9.0m. It's just way too risky, they'll err on the side of caution I reckon

Bruno Fernandes was 8.0 when he first move to Man Utd. Salah was 9.0. Werner 9.0, Harvertz 8.5, Sancho 9.5.

                  I reckon Nunez will be under 10. I'd say 8.5 or 9.0

                  1. @persecuted_by_mods

4/5 of those are mids and the other went to Chelsea who aren't Liverpool

I just can't see below 10m because IF he starts firing from the start then he breaks the game everyone has him and has cash to spare

Yes of course overpricing could make him a non option but if you're fpl would you rather make a mistake in pricing that means people don't pick a player or make a mistake in pricing that means everyone picks him and has lots of money still to spend

It's a bigger risk to completely ruin someone as an option from their first season. Remember we've all been saying strikers need lower prices.

9.5 absolute max. 9.0 and suddenly strikers are interesting again.

How is it a bigger risk to ruin 1 player Vs potentially ruining the whole game*?

*Hyperbole of course but if he is on fire 9m is a snip and leaves plenty of money still in our team

I'm thinking 9.5 / 10. Even at that level he could become quite the bandwagon if he scores in the first few weeks. I've had a little tinker & if he comes in at 9.5 or less its definitely viable to triple up on Darwin, Diaz, and Robbo alongside Son, Håland, Cancelo & Doherty. I'm quite tempted to go with something like that

I think 9.5/10 too. If it was for anyone that wasn't Liverpool or City I'd say 9 but given the players around him I'd expect a bit more. The question now really is whether he's going to go straight into the team or whether Jota will start the season as the CF while Nunez gets acclimatised. Having a full preseason should be a huge help if Klopp wants the former.

I think they will bottle making any changes because they are corporates; feet under the table merchants. They don't want personal blame.

Agree. It’ll be lazy pricing again. Scored over X last season add 0.5. Launch game

Funny one 😉 I don't think there will be any rule changes, extra WC because of WC is a possibility though.

Having all chips like WC twice is one possibility, however.

Maybe an extra WC after World Cup, but they could just bring the second forward.

I hope they don't increase the number of chips - we have quite enough already.
There should be only one Free Hit - I hope that last season's second Free Hit introduced in mid-season was a one-off that won't be repeated.
The second Wildcard should be available from the end of the World Cup till the end of the season.
And they might replace the Bench Boost with something else.

It could be interesting if they promoted most front three players (especially wingers) from midfielders to forwards,
changed the composition of FPL squads from 2-5-5-3 to 2-5-4-4,
and made 4-2-4 (a valid formation (replacing 3-5-2 and 4-5-1),
as suggested by Giggs Boson in a recent hot topic.

I don't see any point in changing the budget - 100m is a nice round figure, and they can always adjust players' prices to suit it instead. The game would be far less interesting if we could afford all the top players and didn't have to make any compromises to get as many as we think we need.

Another WC for the World Cup is surely on the cards seeing as they only care about more people playing, keeping people interested.

I’d be surprised as according to piece in the Athletic the FA has asked the PL to avoid any of the top 6 playing each other in early November pre WC and it is expected this will be granted - these fixtures have some top 6 clashes

True but could there have been any backlash to that idea from other clubs?

Here's an interesting tactic that I might use at the start of the season
Select the top priced player in each position
Along with the lowest priced in each position
Allowing me to transfer in any performing player in any position without taking hits after one game week
Using excess funds to upgrade lowest prices where needed the following week

Not far off what the masses will be doing then. TAA, Salah, Haaland, with 4.0m keeper, 4.0m defender, and 4.5m mid/forward on bench.

Will be along the lines of the GW1 template
              e.g.
              TAA 4.0
              Salah Son 4.5
              Haaland 4.5

That would probably force you to start with a 4-4-2 formation, a premium goalkeeper, only one premium midfielder and a non-playing bench, which may or may not be a good idea.
And including the top-priced player in every position may prevent you from upgrading one or more good mid-priced players elsewhere.

As with any rigid price point strategy, the price point disappears as soon as you replace a player at a price point with another at a different price, and you may not be able to get the original player back with a single transfer.
And what if you want to bring in a new performing player, but not for the top-price player in that position?

            GW 1 team - 😀

            Raya
            Doherty - Mitchell - Fofana
            Salah - Son - Bowen - Zaha
            EBH - Bamford - Mitrovic

            4m - Romeu - 4m - 4m

Probably a million or 2 over budget but we need to wait and see.
