Premier League 2022/23 fixture release: FPL reaction

The fixtures for the 2022/23 Premier League season have been released this morning.

Manchester City begin their title defence with a tricky-looking trip to West Ham United, while Liverpool are at Fulham on the opening weekend.

The new campaign starts on Friday 5 August with Crystal Palace v Arsenal, a fixture the Eagles won 3-0 in the season just gone.

Tottenham Hotspur’s home game against Southampton is also among the most eye-catching match-ups of Gameweek 1.

Newly promoted Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth face Newcastle United and Aston Villa respectively in their 2022/23 curtain-raisers.

SEASON TICKER OVERVIEW

Our Season Ticker has been updated both on the sidebar and in our Premium Members Area, with all 20 Premier League clubs sorted by fixture difficulty in the first six Gameweeks in the graphic above.

The tickers are customisable, too. You can sort by difficulty, rotation pairings and ‘relative’ difficulty (something that factors in the strength of the team), while you can also remove clubs and Gameweeks from the outlook, add your own difficulty ratings, sort by home/away matches and filter by attack/defence.

BEST AND WORST FIXTURES: FIRST SIX GAMEWEEKS

The Complete Guide to FPL Pre-Season 2022/23

City and Liverpool’s opening six-match runs are arguably the best in the division.

The reigning champions are the only Premier League team who avoid a ‘big six’ side in the first six Gameweeks, with home fixtures against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Forest in Gameweks 2, 4 and 5 standing out especially.

The Reds’ only encounter with one of the half-dozen ‘elite’ teams in the first seven Gameweeks is against far-from-convincing Manchester United in Gameweek 3.

Man CityWest Ham (a)Bournemouth (h)Newcastle (a)Crystal Palace (h)Nottingham Forest (h)Aston Villa (a)
LiverpoolFulham (a)Crystal Palace (h)Man Utd (a)Bournemouth (h)Newcastle (h)Everton (a)

Arsenal avoid any other ‘big six’ club in the first five Gameweeks, with a trip to Old Trafford following.

Spurs have a mixed bag, with away matches at Chelsea and West Ham punctuating easier-on-paper tests against Saints, Forest and Fulham. Manchester City then await in Gameweek 7.

Chelsea similarly meet Spurs and the Hammers but also enjoy clashes with Leeds and Southampton.

United may be ones to avoid at first, with Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal up in the first six weeks.

GW1GW2GW3GW4GW5GW6
ChelseaEverton (a)Spurs (h)Leeds (a)Leicester (h)Southampton (a)West Ham (h)
SpursSouthampton (h)Chelsea (a)Wolves (h)Nottingham Forest (a)West Ham (a)Fulham (h)
ArsenalCrystal Palace (a)Leicester (h)Bournemouth (a)Fulham (h)Aston Villa (h)Man Utd (a)
Man UtdBrighton (h)Brentford (a)Liverpool (h)Southampton (a)Leicester (a)Arsenal (h)

It’s a bit of a baptism of fire for the newly promoted clubs, who are languishing at the wrong end of our newly updated Season Ticker.

Fulham and Bournemouth have it especially tough, each meeting three big-six sides in their opening half-dozen Gameweeks.

FIXTURES: INTERNATIONAL BREAKS, WORLD CUP INTERLUDE AND MORE

Everything you need to know about the FFS World Cup of FPL

Unlike in previous seasons, we’ll get a total of eight Gameweeks before our first international break in September.

That will be our one and only short hiatus before the Premier League pauses for over six weeks to accommodate the World Cup.

Gameweek 16 on the weekend of November 12/13 is the final one to take place before attention switches to Qatar, with FPL resuming on Boxing Day with Gameweek 17.

Back-to-back rounds then follow on December 31 and January 2 before another temporary break for the FA Cup third round.

The season ends on Sunday 28 May, with Brentford v Manchester City, Chelsea v Newcastle, Leeds v Spurs and Southampton v Liverpool among the final fixtures of 2022/23.

We’ll be taking a more in-depth look at the teams with the best and worst fixture runs as the day goes on.

I've wiped my premier league account and starting this season afresh as a new member. my history was awful but for 43k finish a few seasons back.

I'm sure there is some old proverb about ignoring history...

      That’s weird. Own your mistakes.

I’ve no trust in anyone I see with a “I’ve been 40k and 28k in my two seasons of FPL”. “I’ve only just started taking it seriously”

I don’t care if they’ve had four three million+ ranks and only hit the top 10k once in 2008.

I played alternate years for a huge chunk recently, so have four top 10k finishes but also three 2m+ finishes too. It obviously looks a bit ugly but it's all part of the ride. No shame in having all your original ranks associated with your better ones.

That's my normal strategy, but this year I hope to hold off using my WC until after the WC, so I need a longer-term starting squad.

I wonder if they do give unlimited transfers for it (hope not). But even after focusing on the first 8 where i aim to have players from good teams, i think id be able to pull out another 8 fixtures from them before WC during world cup

I'm curious to see what the chip rules will be. We may need to save the WC until after the World Cup. We'd then need to plan for a little longer.

Yeh. If nothing changes (1st WC to be played by GW19), we'll have all of 2 GWs to use it, with all the uncertainty of exhausted and injured players not restarting PL yet).

    Golden Boot odds:
    Erling Haaland: 4/1
    Mohamed Salah: 9/2
    Harry Kane: 6/1
    Heung-min Son: 9/1
    Cristiano Ronaldo: 10/1
    Darwin Nunez: 14/1

CR7 will probably get 50% more minutes than Nunez, plus Liverpool will share the goals around.

I don't think cr7 will get more minutes. He will be rested just as much as Nunez, who is definitely going to be our no.1 for the number 9 role. Jota and Diaz will rotate LW

Ronaldo has become United's only reliable goalscorer. Nunez has to compete for minutes and goals with Salah, Diaz, Jota and Firmino.

I expect Diaz to play more minutes than Nunez. He's already PL adapted, Klopp has suggested Nunez might need time to get the best out of him, and Jota is probably better suited to playing centrally than wide in Liverpool's system

Based on opening fixtures I think you gotta load up City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Leeds and Villa players.

    Meslier, 4.0
    TAA, Cancelo, Robertson, Tierney/Digne, Kristensen
    KdB, Diaz, Bailey, Martinelli, Ramsey
    Haaland, Nketiah, Gelhardt

I'll be looking at something like this depending on player prices and positions.

Spurs also have great fixtures: Soton, Wolves, Fulham at home, and Forest away, all in the first six - but they're getting overlooked a bit because of the Chelsea game

Excl: Manchester City are now set to submit opening proposal to Brighton for Marc Cucurella. First bid ready to proceed in advanced talks in the next days.

Cucurella is still Man City top target as left back, Pep Guardiola really wants him. Work in progress.

Don't think he'll be benched, Pep likes having left-footers on the left and vice-versa, he just didn't seem to want to play Zinchenko too often there despite him also not fancying him as a midfielder either. I think if Cucurella joins the first choice will be him at LB and Cancelo RB with Walker dropping out

If Cucurella comes to Man City how will that affect Cancelo's game time? Will Cancelo switch to the right and oust Walker, or will it be musical wing backs all round with Zinchenko still lurking in the mire?

Yeah will definitely keep an eye on him, 43 goals in 46 games is insane (compare 31 for Toney in the previous year). I think players do improve and it's important to adapt your preconceptions in FPL. I missed out on Bamford (previously rubbish) and Ings (previously made of glass) in the past because I was too stubborn to change an opinion so I'm gonna try to keep an open mind on Mitro. He has scored ten goals in a PL season before, just last time up he was rubbish (even then I think he hit the woodwork a crazy amount of times). The good thing is I won't want him for the first 6 anyway so gives time to scout.

Things are definitely set up better for Fulham this time around. Their game is suited to Mitrovic more, secured promotion early so planning began early, less instability (spending 100m+ in that last summer on additions that didn't improve the side much). But it's a different league, they won't have as much of the ball and will face better defences. I've seen a lot of Fulham fans saying despite their great season, they play (and progressed up the pitch) far too slowly and that will be a problem for them. They also lost Carvalho so they will need more additions

There are some nice players NOT going to the World Cup that will be nice and rested post tournament. If their fixtures fall nicely they will be very much coming into any teams who don’t own already.

    Salah
    Zaha
    Robertson
    Haaland
    Odegaard
    Diaz

      1. would make it too easy for everyone to jump on the form players each week.

      1. It would make the game more enjoyable. You could wait until the deadline to see if anyone has Covid or got injured in that midweek match in some other competition without having to concern yourself with idiots doing early transfers to catch price changes.

I work it out as 35M for 5 Mids/Fwds if you go Salah, Haaland, TAA, Cancelo, 2x4.5 Def, 1 4.0 Def a 4.5 mid/fwd (bench) and a 4.5/4.0 keeper pair. So 7M each on average for the remaining 5 - in that range I like Saka, Toney, Raph, Bamford, Watkins, Cout, Kulu, Martinelli, maybe Trossard, maybe an Everton or Wolves player too. Looking in the 5-9 range basically from Villa, Wolves, Arsenal, Brentford, Spurs, Pool, Chelsea, Brighton, City, Leeds

So you'd be playing the same two 4.5m defenders every week?

no one 4.5 would be first bench so e.g

          4.5 (4.0)
          TAA Cancelo 4.5 (4.5, 4.0)
          Salah - - - -
          Haaland - -

one of those mid/fwd slots is a 4.5 depending on the formation I go with then fill the other 5 slots with 5 starters

early days of course, one of those 4.5 defenders (or even the 4.0) could be James or Robbo and I'd then add another 4.5 Mid or Attacker

Our pricing of the big guns must be far apart then. I thought you meant something like this:

            4.5
            8.5 - 7.5 - 4.5 - 4.5
            13.0 - 7.0 - 7.0 - 7.0
            12.0 - 7.0

            4.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5

            1. zes
              • 8 Years

I think we're on the same page

              GK : 4.5 +4 = 9.5
              Def : 8.0 + 7.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 +4 = 29
              Mid : 13
              FWD: 12

so that's 63.5 leaving 36.5 for 6. One 4.5 bench player leaves 32 for 5. So my maths was off haha, but that leaves 6.5/player on average which seems doable.

I thought your maths was a bit sus 😆 Five 6.5m attacking players stretches you a bit too thin imo. It's inflexible, and difficult to find consistent points down there.

Tricky fitting those big 4 in... as it should be 🙂

I said in the 5-9 range, so I'll be looking at some 5.5s, some 8s etc and I disagree that Raph, Bamford, Toney, Martinelli or Trossard will be above 7. Also can do 4 ATB and add James in who I'd assume will be under 7

Not saying they won't, but not an assumption I'd make before the season starts. One 4.5 defender, easily benched, and Gelhardt (also for the bench) is as much as I'd consider for now.

Maybe but their form at the end of the season was worrying. They also kept most of their clean sheets in a period where their xGc was far higher than their goals conceded, it was bound to hit them eventually but not sure I fancy depending on them until I see a few games

yes...Haaland is essential I think, Salah less so due to his (likely) higher pricing.

I'm hoping for Trent Diaz / Cancelo Haaland

With either Robertson/Laporte as well potentially.

While it isn't crazy I wouldn't say it's logical haaland is unknown in the premier league whereas Salah always delivers and is nailed on captain most weeks, son is great but with his coming higher price tag he might not be as great and worth it as he has been in the past

It's not crazy but it's a risk to not have Salah imo. History tells us he scores big, and I think Mane leaving may actually benefit him. Haaland will be extremely close in price to Salah with zero PL experience and is less nailed. Diaz isn't a Salah substitute, jurys out on whether he is a big points scorer.

I'll almost certainly go Salah for GW1, has a great GW1 record (from what I can remember) and Fulham is a peach of a fixture. Happy to swap him out after a few weeks, his price means you leave all other options open. Trying to get him in can be more difficult.

nailed is very rarely a real thing. to me, "nailed" will start most matches. Salah is nailed, but will occasionally be benched. I'd expect that Haaland plays 3 in 4 when fit. They won't flog him (like spurs do with kane) because:
        A) he has a history of injuries
        B) they simply don't need to

I don't think you sign someone like Haaland without an intention to play him most of the time.

But ultimately, Haaland is there to see them through those clutch moments in the league but more importantly in the champions league. Keeping him fit for those big moments is surely going to be a factor (so odd rests, frequent early subs which will be much easier with 5 subs).

Son as it stands. With captaincy shared between Salah and Haaland, I can't justify a 3rd premium. It also allows me 4 at the back from Liverpool and City.
